0:09 more so is just an excuse to go back and
0:11 watch them cuz when I was a kid I really
0:13 like these movies and if you're a
0:14 millennial chances are you did too and
0:17 you were also too scared to admit that
0:19 to any of your friends I don't know why
0:21 as an 11-year-old I felt the need to
0:23 pretend that I didn't like a movie that
0:25 was you know made for 11-year-old as if
0:27 all my friends were going to be like
0:28 High School Musical I don't know man
0:30 sounds a little immature to me I only
0:32 watch war footage I'm a very violent
0:34 young man either way something I did not
0:36 realize as a kid is how low budget these
0:38 movies were the first movie was made on
0:40 a budget of $4.2 million which might
0:42 sound like a lot but Zombies 3 which is
0:44 a newer decom cost $40 million to make
0:48 in Zombies defense though they needed
0:49 the money those werewolf costumes looked
0:51 pretty expensive High School Musical was
0:53 shot in just a couple of weeks at a real
0:55 high school using real students as
0:57 extras in fact they were so strapped for
0:59 cash they couldn't even afford a real
1:01 title apparently High School Musical was
1:03 just the working title for the script
1:05 and they were like we'll come up with a
1:06 better one eventually and then they
1:07 didn't I'm very excited to see if these
1:08 movies hold up to my jaded adult eyes so
1:11 let's start with the first one let me
1:12 introduce you to the two main characters
1:14 of this movie Troy and Gabriella they
1:17 don't know each other yet but they're
1:18 both on vacation with their respective
1:20 families at a ski resort on New Year's
1:22 Eve and right away this movie shows you
1:24 everything you need to know about these
1:25 characters in like 2 minutes Gabriella
1:27 is nerd girl she doesn't want to go to
1:29 the teen party because she's busy
1:31 reading a book meanwhile Troy's dad is
1:33 the most stereotypical Disney dad to
1:35 ever grace the screen not only is Mr
1:37 Bolton Troy's dad he's also the coach of
1:39 Troy's high school basketball team so
1:41 instead of getting ready for the parties
1:43 he's making Troy run drills in the hotel
1:46 JY am I going left yeah he looks middle
1:48 you take it downtown well Troy it's New
1:50 Year's Eve you know what that means
1:52 that's right Dad I I might finally get
1:54 my first kid fake right take the ball
1:57 downtown Troy's mom comes to get them
1:58 for the party and Troy asks if he can
2:00 have one more basket with all of the
2:02 confidence and Swagger of a real high
2:05 school jock come on one more one more
2:09 just one more basket please Troy shows
2:10 up to the teen party and is immediately
2:12 yawning his face off all right hell yeah
2:15 this is clearly a popular jock who knows
2:17 how to party somehow despite being the
2:19 two most bored people at the party the
2:21 spotlight chooses Troy and Gabriella to
2:23 sing karaoke but to the spotlight
2:25 operator's credit they actually do crush
2:27 it they both get up there and they're
2:29 nervous at first but then all of a
2:30 sudden Troy's voice it's like it changes
2:33 almost actually it's like his voice
2:35 changes from his voice to like a
2:37 professional singer's
2:39 voice cuz that is what happens
2:43 actually in my own
2:48 world I think this might be like the
2:49 most well-known High School Musical
2:51 trivia but for the vast majority of the
2:53 first High School Musical movie it's not
2:55 Zack Efron's Voice singing he had a
2:57 voice double his name is Drew cely and
3:00 he never appears on screen in the movies
3:02 he also apparently didn't even realize
3:04 how big of a movie High School Musical
3:06 was and forgot that he had done the
3:07 vocals for the movie until it came on
3:09 the TV while he was working a shift at
3:12 PF Changs apparently he tried to
3:14 convince his co-workers that it was
3:15 really him singing in the movie and no
3:18 one believed him it's kind of funny cuz
3:19 the whole point of the movie is kind of
3:21 like hey basketball guys can sing too if
3:23 they
3:24 Wana uh but not this basketball guy
3:28 actually you don't want to hear this
3:29 basketball voice so they crush the song
3:31 They're dancing around on stage together
3:33 it's like they were born to perform but
3:35 for me personally little Viking boy
3:37 really steals the
3:39 show you guys know little Viking boy
3:44 right he's basically the star of the
3:46 movie look at him back there he's
3:47 leaving it all on the Dance Floor man wa
3:49 sorry I almost fell backwards it's just
3:53 he actually is getting a little bit too
3:55 into this this guy's locking eyes with
3:57 me like we've been madly in love for
3:59 years and why his voice suddenly gets so
4:01 much more

4:07 theatrical I guess I better go find my
4:10 mom and wish her a happy New Year this
4:11 is so romantic I should say something
4:14 romantic I got to go find my mom and
4:16 then she vanishes and he never sees her
4:19 again that's right you thought the movie
4:20 was going to be about Troy and Gabriella
4:22 n now the rest of this movie is about
4:23 Troy and Viking boy Flash Forward Troy
4:25 returns to his High School East High
4:27 where he is seemingly a god amongst men
4:30 and then um actually I don't uh I don't
4:33 remember this scene yeah I don't know
4:35 what happens here at all looks like the
4:36 teacher is about to maybe give some kind
4:39 of speech about today's sponsor this

5:48 what did you do at your last School Troy
5:50 notices that Gabriella is sitting in the
5:52 back of their drama class and not to be
5:53 nitpicky but this drama class scene
5:55 lasts for 2 minutes but the class
5:58 happens in real time from start to
6:00 finish in that 2 minutes the Bell
6:03 Rings they sit down the whole class gets
6:06 detention and then the Bell Rings again
6:08 and they leave how long is a school day
6:11 at East Tha is it like 15 minutes Troy
6:14 shows Gabriella around they catch up a
6:16 little bit and it is revealed that East
6:18 High is having auditions for their
6:20 winter musical pretty soon Troy jokes
6:22 that Gabriella should sign up because
6:24 you know they sang together and
6:25 Gabriella's response is basically [ __ ]
6:27 no I won't be signing up for anything
6:29 for a while yeah I don't know why I
6:30 remembered this movie differently I
6:32 thought they both wanted to do the
6:33 Musical Troy seems to maybe want to do
6:36 it and Gabrielle is like no I'm not
6:37 doing that no I don't sing I'm not a
6:40 freaky genius girl and I'm definitely
6:41 not a freaky singer girl so dude you
6:43 know that uh School Musical thing um
6:46 Troy the music in those shows isn't
6:47 hip-hop okay or Rock it's like show
6:50 music yeah and you guys would never do
6:52 anything like sing show music
6:55 right and then cut to them singing the
6:57 hardest show music in this entire movie
6:59 that's the funny thing about this movie
7:01 since it's a movie about a musical there
7:03 are several characters in this movie
7:04 that are opposed to musicals so it is a
7:07 little jarring to see those characters
7:08 seemingly completely unaware that they
7:10 are literally singing and dancing right
7:12 now but on the other hand I guess it
7:13 would also be weird if they didn't sing
7:16 when everyone else was at the end when
7:18 they're all singing We're All in This
7:19 Together Corbin Blue's just standing
7:21 around
7:23 like this is lame there's two parts in
7:26 the song though where Troy like stops
7:28 rapping to s sing from the heart about
7:30 how he wants to do the musical she makes
7:33 this Feel So Right should I go for it
7:35 what do you mean she makes this Feel So
7:38 Right and should I go for it Gabriella
7:40 doesn't want to do the musical it was
7:42 your idea and she said no don't drag her
7:45 into this this girl's making me crazy no
7:48 you're crazy you already were and then
7:50 you met a girl that's what happened also
7:52 Zack Efron is 58 and presumably so is
7:55 everybody else on this basketball team
7:56 cuz they're all like the same height so
7:58 how good exactly are they at basketball
8:00 okay now you got Sharpe who's played by
8:02 Ashley Tisdale she's like the head of
8:04 the theater department at school she's
8:05 the theater kid and her brother Ryan is
8:08 the theater kid in boy form they are
8:10 getting a little bit worried that Troy
8:11 and Gabriella might audition for the
8:13 musical again Gabriella has showed zero
8:15 interest in doing the musical so they
8:17 decide to do a little bit of research on
8:19 Gabriella so they search her name on the
8:20 Internet and they find out she's this
8:22 freaky genius girl that she said she was
8:24 she's won all of these Awards She's won
8:26 Scholastic competitions and the like but
8:28 also uh what is the third result there
8:30 Gabriella San Diego Zoo's
8:34 newest what what is Gabriella at the San
8:38 Diego Zoo Ryan's like oh that's
8:40 interesting look it says here she's a
8:41 dolphin that's funny now that I think
8:43 about it I can't believe I never noticed
8:45 after basketball practice it's time for
8:46 Troy to go home and relax just kidding
8:48 it's time for more basketball come on
8:51 Troy bake CL take the ball down to did
8:53 you ever think about trying something
8:54 new but we're afraid of what your
8:56 friends might think you mean like going
8:57 left you're doing fine come on Troy's
8:59 dead D has one thing in his mind and it
9:01 is one basketball just bouncing around
9:04 like the DVD logo I want to see a movie
9:06 about him and how hard his life must be
9:09 I do like that this movie keeps the
9:10 tradition alive of Disney Channel movie
9:12 characters being inexplicably rich his
9:14 dad is a high school basketball coach
9:16 and they live in a mansion what does the
9:18 mom do she an arms dealer also he says
9:21 something new like going left me like
9:23 going left when in get ahead in the game
9:25 Troy clearly says coach said to fake
9:27 right and break left he already said to
9:29 do that that's not new that's what he
9:30 already does
9:32 so found a plot hole next Troy sneaks
9:35 away from his friends to go audition for
9:37 the musical I guess the voices in his
9:39 head that he thinks are Gabriella got
9:40 too strong and he now has to act on
9:48 [Music]
9:51 them he's
9:53 gone wow where didd he go pay no
9:56 attention to the fact that as he turns
9:58 the corner he probably fully saw Troy
10:00 like meanwhile Troy's dad is just
10:03 standing there like huh that's weird
10:05 could have sworn I saw basketball now
10:08 when we see the auditions it becomes
10:10 immediately clear that while Ryan and
10:11 Sharpe are basically made out to be the
10:13 villains of this movie cuz they're so
10:15 overprotective of their theater
10:16 department they are completely in the
10:18 right to do so not because their
10:20 audition is really good which it
10:22 actually is but because everyone else's
10:24 is so bad it's hard to believe that I
10:28 couldn't sne me it seems that no one
10:31 else in this entire school can even sing
10:34 it seems like they actually don't even
10:35 have a concept of what music is so like
10:39 yeah I would actually be hoping I got
10:40 the lead too it is funny how they all
10:42 act like they can't sing and then
10:44 anytime there's like an actual musical
10:45 number as part of the movie every member
10:47 of the student body sings their heart
10:49 out like the rent is do what's going on
10:50 there so Troy shows up to audition and
10:52 then Gabriella shows up too I guess
10:55 turns out she actually did want to
10:57 audition I don't know I don't know if
10:58 Troy threaten her or what but she shows
11:00 up but they are too late to the actual
11:03 audition so they don't get to audition
11:04 in time but they stick around afterwards
11:06 and just sing an audition anyway and
11:07 Miss Daris the director hears them and
11:09 decides you know what you guys get a
11:11 call back understandably so she's
11:12 working with a very small talent pool
11:14 Here Comes two people who know what a
11:16 song is she's got to hold on to that
11:18 after school before school whatever
11:19 works after basketball class we can get
11:22 this ring so now this is interesting
11:24 Troy is looking at his sheet music like
11:26 he's never seen it before in his life
11:28 despite having just sung the song
11:30 Perfectly after only glancing at the
11:32 sheet music briefly he also says what
11:35 what to almost imply he has no clue how
11:37 the sheet music got into his hands or
11:39 how he got a call back does he not know
11:41 that he just sang anytime there's a
11:43 musical number in this movie do they
11:44 just black out and come to like I don't
11:46 know what
11:48 happened we definitely didn't sing
11:50 though I don't know
11:51 how if you're my age it might have felt
11:54 like this movie was written just for you
11:56 and it came out and in a sense it kind
11:58 of was the writer Peter barini who was
12:00 mostly known for writing rated our
12:02 action movies at the time started
12:03 writing the script because he wanted to
12:05 make a movie he could watch with his
12:06 daughter Gabriella I thought it would be
12:08 really fun to write a Disney Channel
12:10 movie that my daughter could watch yes
12:13 he did name the main character after her
12:14 and that kind of melts my heart she was
12:16 10 in 2004 when he started writing it
12:19 and so was I the story was actually
12:20 inspired by his own high school
12:22 experience when one of his basketball
12:24 teammates confided in him about his love
12:26 for ballet decades later Peter thought
12:28 wow that's actually a perfect plot for a
12:30 kids movie boys are more than just jocks
12:33 they can do other stuff they can do
12:35 ballet
12:36 or No actually that's that's too far
12:40 they could do the musical but only if
12:41 it's cuz they want to sing with a girl
12:43 anyway it's time for another song about
12:44 how basketball players shouldn't sing
12:45 sung by you guessed it the basketball

12:51 players status quo is actually such a
12:54 fantastic song it features several
12:56 students who decide that hey since Troy
12:58 and Gabrielle are breaking out of their
13:00 stereotypical roles in this school so
13:02 can I Zeke the basketball player decides
13:05 to let everyone know hey not only do I
13:06 play basketball I also bake I bake this
13:10 nerdy girl loves hip-hop this Stoner
13:12 skater guy likes to play the cello and
13:15 everyone in the school [ __ ] hates
13:19 it we're skaters bro we don't play the
13:22 cello we only skate and smoke weed and
13:25 of course we
13:27 sing now of course this movie is very
13:29 self-aware about this contradiction and
13:31 I love it for that but it does not make
13:33 sense at the beginning of this song Zeke
13:35 says I want to make a creme brulee some
13:37 day and then at the end of the song he
13:38 actually has a creme brulee so he
13:40 presumably baked this creme brulee at
13:42 some point during the song it cuts to
13:45 him sprinting down the hallway to the
13:46 kitchen you can hear Everyone Else
13:47 singing echoing in the background he's
13:49 like they don't believe me they don't
13:50 believe I can bake I got to show them so
13:52 Gabriella shows up and everyone is of
13:54 course staring at her cuz they were all
13:55 just singing about her they're staring
13:57 at her they're pissed and they kill
14:00 her they kill Gabriella at my other
14:03 schools I was the freaking math well I
14:06 hate to break it to you Gabriela but you
14:07 are a freak here too everyone at this
14:09 school thinks you're a freak now also
14:10 the entire student body I don't know if
14:11 you heard they actually just sang an
14:13 entire song about it now you're the
14:14 freaky singing girl so you really want

15:50 girlfriend they might as well be filming
15:52 on like a giant hand crank film camera
15:55 the kind where you got to put a blanket
15:56 over your head to even see the image try
15:58 100 % sees the camera and does not care
16:01 who sees what he's saying the thunder
16:03 clap Gabriella is not important after
16:05 this happens Gabriella doesn't want to
16:06 talk to Troy anymore and this really
16:08 hits Troy hard as you can see
16:12 here the pain is manifesting itself in
16:15 Troy physically here as he can't even
16:17 shoot a basket without experiencing
16:19 immense physical trauma aren't
16:20 basketball players supposed to be good
16:22 Under Pressure especially the captain of
16:24 the team seems like this whole movie
16:26 we've seen nothing short of the
16:27 psychological unravel in of Troy because
16:30 he's sang with a girl one time hey we
16:33 just had another team meeting we just
16:34 had another team meeting man and we just
16:36 wanted to say we forgot about JJ buckets
16:39 Jenkins class of 1984 does that change
16:42 your mind so later Troy sneaks up onto
16:43 Gabriella's balcony again huge house no
16:46 explanation to try to win her
16:48 back this could be the start of
16:53 something new it feels so right to be
16:58 here
16:59 with you okay yeah I don't remember this
17:03 part being so pitchy but this actually
17:05 is Zack Efron's voice here yeah this is
17:08 very uncomfortable can we can we get

17:16 something it's a peirs audition saying
17:18 it's a paars audition kind of implies
17:20 like I would audition without you if I
17:22 could I guess Troy meant what he said
17:24 earlier to the webcam he really does not
17:26 care about Gabriella he just wants to be
17:28 in the musical Gabriella is not
17:29 important you might make the mistake
17:31 like I did when I watched this as a kid
17:33 of thinking this is kind of like a Romeo
17:34 and Juliet story about Troy and Gabriela
17:37 uh and it is a Romeo and Juliet story
17:39 but Gabriella is not Juliet Juliet is
17:41 just the musical how you
17:44 feeling nervous yeah me too wish I could
17:49 suit up and play alongside you yeah no
17:50 [ __ ] what I want is for you to have fun
17:53 I know all about the pressure and
17:55 probably too much of it has come from me
17:57 I can't help but feel like all that
17:59 screaming at you and making you play
18:01 basketball until your hands bleed has
18:03 had some kind of negative effect on you
18:05 but all I want in life is for you to be
18:07 happy while playing basketball I am
18:09 still demanding that thanks coach
18:12 ah
18:14 Dad let's stick with Coach unless you
18:16 win all right sharp and Ryan try to
18:18 throw another wrench into Troy and
18:19 Gabriella's plans of attending the
18:21 callbacks for the musical by getting the
18:23 call backs changed to the exact same
18:25 time as not only Troy's championship
18:27 basketball game also Gabriella's to
18:29 cathlon tournament so the Gang has to
18:31 create a diversion that way they can
18:32 make all three events so Gabriella and
18:35 her genius friends first hack the
18:37 school's power grid to turn off the
18:39 lights at the basketball game then they
18:41 create a chemical reaction at the
18:43 decathlon so everyone has to evacuate
18:45 and you know
18:46 what I get why everyone called her a
18:48 freaky genius girl at her last school I
18:50 think she deserved it she's like oh we
18:52 can use a chemical reaction I did this
18:54 at my last school we just have to make
18:56 sure we don't make it as strong this
18:57 time that way not as many people will
18:59 die not as many so Troy and Gabriella
19:01 get to do their call back breaking free
19:02 classic song and look the whole school
19:04 shows up even the opposing basketball
19:07 team is there they crush the audition
19:08 Troy heads back to the basketball game
19:10 and they win that too and then they all
19:12 sing the big closing number of the movie
19:15 We're All in This Together We're All in
19:18 This Together wow I guess they all
19:20 learned a valuable lesson except hang on
19:22 Sharpe you did not learn a lesson get
19:25 out of this song don't sing and dance
19:27 with them like you learned a valuable
19:28 lesson get get out if Gabriella dropped
19:30 dead right now you would dance on her
19:33 grave and that's High School Musical one
19:36 many people lovingly remember little
19:38 Viking boy from the first High School
19:39 Musical movie and while he rocketed to
19:41 stardom in the wake of the first movie
19:44 his troubled life and full from Grace
19:46 has been the subject of many concerned
19:48 Twitter threads in the 19 years since do

20:38 handful of times in the nearly 20 years
20:41 since but one of my favorite things to
20:42 come out of the success of this movie
20:44 which I totally forgot about until I was
20:46 making this video was the live concert I
20:49 forgot about this until I went to the
20:50 library to check out the DVDs for the
20:53 three movies and they happen to have a
20:55 DVD of the recording of High School
20:57 Musical in concert this feels pretty
21:00 unusual even to this day for a Disney
21:02 Channel movie to put together a live
21:04 touring concert featuring the actual
21:07 cast of the movie selling out Arenas
21:09 with audiences in the tens of thousands
21:12 around the world but it wasn't the whole
21:14 cast actually Zach Efron couldn't be
21:16 there because he had a commitment he was
21:18 filming hairspray at the time so who did
21:19 they get to fill in for him in my own
21:26 world understand it's Drew

21:36 fact that Zach wasn't going to be there
21:37 and Drew would be in his place but I
21:40 have to imagine every concert there were
21:42 like one or two kids that were

21:49 all the success of the first movie they
21:51 had to crank out a sequel fast which
21:53 they did releasing High School Musical 2
21:55 in August of 2007 and you might think it
21:58 would be in possible for them to catch
21:59 lightning in a bottle twice but oh baby
22:02 did they what time is it sequel time
22:05 High School Musical 2 is often regarded
22:07 as the best High School Musical movie
22:09 out of any High School Musical movie
22:11 this one has the most moments that have
22:13 lived on in the cultural Zeitgeist even
22:15 today the movie starts just as the
22:17 school year is ending the musical is
22:19 long over so if you are expecting to see

22:35 noticed is that despite only a few
22:36 months having passed from the events of
22:38 the first movie Troy looks drastically
22:40 different his hair is much darker he has
22:42 a different haircut so you can see his
22:44 ears now but most strikingly of all his
22:47 eyes have somehow become more blue
22:49 you're actually listening his eyes were
22:51 already pretty blue in the first movie
22:53 but they're piercing in this film it is
22:55 scary get some contacts you free the
22:58 clock 215 and the first Banger of this
23:00 movie commences the class immediately
23:02 erupts in celebration they throw their
23:04 papers in the air start dancing around
23:06 and did Chad just kiss his teacher on
23:08 the
23:09 neck yeah he okay he just kissed Miss
23:11 darbus on the neck that's too far
23:14 luckily it doesn't look like she cared
23:15 she's just
23:17 violent we finally get to hear Zach
23:19 Efron actually sing in this song and I
23:21 hate to admit it but he sounds pretty
23:23 good I'm sorry Drew your services are no
23:25 longer needed he does end the song in a
23:28 very strange manner
23:31 though yeah the song ends there's
23:35 silence and then Troy breaks away from
23:38 the group to slide on the floor and say
23:43 yeah why does he do that now the trouble
23:46 in this movie begins because Troy wants
23:47 to make some extra cash this summer his
23:49 parents are making him pay for college
23:51 despite them clearly being very wealthy
23:54 taking vacations at ski resorts and
23:56 living in a literal Mansion but I got to
23:58 get hired first me too I'm saving up for
24:00 a car so I can take that little HTI on a
24:02 proper date you can't see it but he's
24:03 actually not talking about that girl in
24:05 his grade Miss darbus is just standing
24:07 right outside of
24:09 Fran he in Troy
24:12 what yeah why does he looks so confused
24:15 there it's like it never occurred to him
24:17 that t could be for Troy he's like oh I
24:19 actually thought it was a cross but yeah
24:22 no yeah t for Troy that's my name now
24:24 that the school year's over and
24:25 basketball season isn't starting back up
24:27 again for months it's time for you
24:29 guessed it basketball practice fake
24:32 right Troy fake left take the ball
24:34 Uptown for a fancy dinner tell you what
24:37 seeing moves I didn't see last season
24:38 Keep It Coming guys this post-workout
24:40 scene has a lot of gems like Mr Bolton's
24:43 insanely long shorts dude is criminally
24:45 insecure about his knees also Troy about
24:48 to drink from an entire gallon of milk
24:50 from the fridge and then he gets a phone
24:52 call revealing that his ringtone is get
24:54 you head in the
24:56 game uh-oh is that had a real song in
24:59 this universe so in the first movie it
25:01 seemed like Sharpe might have had a
25:02 little crush on Troy but in this movie
25:04 she's got a big crush on Troy she's like
25:06 he's the most popular guy in school and
25:09 I think I'm the most popular girl in
25:11 school it's a match made in heaven so
25:13 she pulls some strings at her family's
25:15 Country Club to get Troy a summer job
25:17 there the only catch is Troy requests to
25:19 get like the entire School hired and
25:21 somehow that works so Troy shows up with
25:24 his entire basketball team you got Chad
25:27 there also the nerdy girl who loves to
25:28 hip-hop dance got a job there you got
25:30 Vanessa hudgin stunt double working
25:32 there Montes it would seem your lunch
25:35 break does not start for 3.5 minutes in
25:37 order to keep the conflict of this movie
25:39 moving along they have to make it seem
25:41 like their job is really demanding but
25:44 they also have to tow the line of not
25:46 making it seem like these kids are being
25:48 abused in some way because they are just
25:50 kids so some of the insane demands that
25:54 their job is asking of them is just like
25:56 hey can you show up to work on time and
25:58 make sure you clock out at the end of
25:59 your ship and the entire student body of
26:01 East High is like we're in prison
26:04 they're not going to pay us until we
26:06 provide a service what kind of dystopian
26:09 universe is this Mr fton is 100% correct
26:12 to be strict by the way several times
26:13 throughout this movie he catches them
26:15 doing things they're very clearly not
26:17 supposed to be doing like having a
26:18 picnic on the golf course during the day
26:21 while people are playing golf or
26:23 swimming in the pool after hours when
26:24 there's no lifeguard present and every
26:26 time he's like um hey guys could you
26:29 could you not do this anymore and Troy's
26:30 just like man what the [ __ ] is this
26:32 guy's problem suddenly I'm beginning to
26:34 miss detention with M darbus yeah I bet
26:36 you are you
26:37 freak
26:39 Toom you guys you've been working for 30
26:44 minutes this is a job this is just what
26:46 jobs are I don't mention the is such a
26:50 creep okay wait hold on what did he what
26:53 did he do to you maybe I spoke too soon
26:54 if he's actually a creep I take back
26:56 everything I said so Sharpe didn't just
26:57 have Troy hired she actually has a whole
26:59 plan to lure Troy in starting with
27:02 getting her dad to pull some strings at
27:04 the University of Albuquerque's
27:05 basketball team to give Troy a chance at
27:07 a scholarship so Troy I saw your
27:10 championship game I mean wow that last
27:13 second shot at the buzzer outstanding if
27:15 I was a basketball recruiter and I saw
27:17 that championship game I would be more
27:19 concerned about the lights going out and
27:21 then everybody leaving at the same time
27:24 to watch the star basketball player
27:26 audition for a musical and then come
27:28 back and win the game like nothing
27:29 happened and then also how they all sang
27:31 a song after that that's what I would be
27:32 concerned about but yeah I'm sure he
27:34 played well too you know between the two
27:36 of us here we uh we pull a little weight
27:38 over at the school ah well um time flies
27:42 when you're having fun I'm not really
27:43 sure what prompts that reaction they're
27:45 like you know we could do a lot of great
27:46 things for your future we really want to
27:49 help you Troy and he's like I don't know
27:51 I'm getting the [ __ ] out of here guys
27:52 see you if that were Mr Bolton there
27:54 instead of Troy right now he would be
27:56 he'd be barking like a dog he dad let me
27:58 play a few holes and then invited me to
27:59 dinner with some U OFA alumni really oh
28:02 wait Troy's dad is fixing up a car look
28:04 he has other Hobbies good for him
28:06 granted he is propping up the hood of
28:08 the car with a basketball and there's
28:10 more basketball and Hoops in the
28:12 background and I do kind of feel like if
28:13 we could see what he's working on there
28:15 would just be five basketballs where the
28:17 engine is supposed to be but it's a step
28:18 in the right direction Troy's dad
28:20 surprisingly is all for Troy going for
28:22 the basketball scholarship nothing wrong
28:24 with keeping your eye on the prize and
28:25 that's great I totally agree with that
28:27 Troy should cap capitalize on these
28:29 opportunities he's been given but he
28:30 should try to make his girlfriend and
28:32 his friends a priority too however that
28:34 is not what Troy does so it's all in the
28:36 grip you got to hold it just right ooh
28:39 that looks great hey I almost
28:41 forgot I heard a Swiss on my Burg so go
28:44 ahead and check it out man hey I almost
28:45 forgot get back in the kitchen you broke
28:48 [ __ ] and get your money on look
28:50 at
28:51 you go te yeah it's a gift from the guys
28:56 typical high school jock always doing
28:58 cool spin dance moves to get from the
29:03 guy I love sports to get from the
29:08 guy look how much taller the actual
29:11 basketball players are than Troy I hate
29:13 to say it man he's going to get crushed
29:14 in college he doesn't stand a chance and
29:16 not to mention they definitely don't
29:17 take singing breaks in the middle of
29:19 practice next we get the absolute
29:20 classic I Don't Dance featuring you
29:22 guessed it a lot of dancing I Don't
29:25 Dance this song is great but tell me why
29:27 at the end of the song Ryan and Chad are
29:30 wearing each other's clothes cuz they
29:32 don't ever address that it's such a
29:34 confusing part of the movie why did they
29:36 change clothes when when did they get
29:38 naked so I was confused about this so I
29:40 actually went looking and I found an
29:41 article where the two actors explained
29:43 what happened the outfit swap was
29:45 actually suggested by director Kenny
29:48 Ortega quote he had the on the-fly idea
29:50 at the last minute blue said we had
29:52 already done one take of that scene and
29:54 he did the usual thinking gesture and
29:57 said switch outfits bro was cooking bro
30:01 was you I don't know what he was cooking
30:03 but bro was cooking something hey we
30:06 missed out on a fun night but the
30:08 dessert afterwards had to be the best
30:10 part her mom makes the best brownies in
30:12 the entire world I've had them I've had
30:15 them I've had her [ __ ] brownies I
30:17 like that that was the thing that pissed
30:19 him off he was like look I can catch you
30:21 romantically dancing with my girlfriend
30:23 at Sunset until the cows come home but
30:25 you touch her mom's [ __ ] brownies
30:28 you're dead we're fighting and let's
30:30 just say by the end of the
30:32 fight I'm going to be wearing your
30:34 clothes blowing off your friends missing
30:36 dates if that's you it's good to know no

30:40 friends this is nothing like the Troy I
30:42 met last year who blew off his friends
30:44 and missed basketball to audition for
30:46 the musical with me I
30:48 got then Gabriella sings a song breaking
30:51 up with Troy called I got to go my own
30:53 way I got to go my own way I like that
30:57 she finishes the last line of the song
30:59 after she's gotten in the car so like
31:01 Troy can't hear her anymore Gabriella
31:03 just gets in the car and her mom's like
31:05 how is work and she's like I got to go
31:07 my own way all right hell yeah we are
31:10 going our own way we're going home I
31:12 like this song all right the pressure
31:13 has mounted Troy's about ready to crack
31:16 which means it's time for the most
31:17 iconic song of all bet on it I love this
31:20 song so much great choreography the fact
31:22 that he's dancing across an Open golf
31:24 course that is currently in use I don't
31:26 know if his promotions that he got got
31:28 entitled him to have a dancing crisis on
31:30 the golf course but he's really going
31:32 for it he's going Allin risking getting
31:34 absolutely beamed by a golf ball oh and
31:36 now he's in the
31:37 [Music]
31:43 wilderness what Troy respectfully I
31:46 think you have a lot more to worry about
31:48 than your golf
31:50 swing that's not what this song is about
31:52 is it I guess it's kind of vague

32:00 aside I actually have no clue what he's
32:03 decided on at the end of this song he's
32:05 kind of just like you can bet on me I'm

32:13 back are you going to do the talent show

32:16 like no I was just going to stand on top
32:19 of this mountain for the rest of the

32:24 the end of this movie is messed up
32:26 Sharpe actually turns her actor around
32:28 she previously got the wild cats banned
32:30 from the Country Club talent show but
32:32 she decides you know what they can do
32:33 their act as long as Troy still does his
32:36 song with me she agrees to this and then
32:38 the wild cats turn around secretly
32:40 remove sharpi from the talent show and
32:43 stick Troy back in their musical number
32:45 it's like dude why did you even make her
32:47 agree to it if you were just going to go
32:48 behind her back and do it on your own
32:50 anyway shpe I'm sorry man you got played
32:54 really
32:56 we and Gabrielle is
33:01 here why she forgives him now it's
33:03 actually not clear at all what Troy did
33:05 to win Gabriella back they haven't seen
33:08 each other since she drove away singing
33:10 Maybe word got to her that Troy was
33:12 angrily prancing around the golf course
33:14 and she was like oh God it's gotten too
33:16 bad I got to step
33:18 [Music]
33:20 in the last song of this movie is called
33:23 All For One
33:25 um I don't know I kind of feel like they
33:27 lost a little bit of inspiration at the
33:29 end here kind of feels like they forgot
33:31 what moral they were working towards for
33:33 the end of this one and they were like
33:35 and we're all together in this one also
33:38 and the movie ends with Gabriela wooing
33:40 several times while looking over at Troy
33:42 for
33:49 approval and that's the end of the movie
33:51 and now I'm very excited to watch the
33:52 third movie but before I do there's
33:54 something I need to address I feel like
33:56 there's something deeply wrong in these
33:58 movies and I'm I feel like I'm finally
34:01 starting to get a handle on it these
34:02 movies like they don't really feel like
34:04 musicals and it took me a while to
34:05 figure out why so to explain it to you
34:09 we're going to have to go back to
34:10 Medieval Europe in a French town in 1518
34:13 some 400 people became inexplicably
34:16 overcome by an urge to dance they did so
34:19 for weeks on end this dancing plague as
34:22 it was later coined lasted for months
34:24 and only ended when participants were
34:26 either so exhausted that they collapsed
34:28 or so exhausted that they were dead
34:29 authorities tried to stop the dancing
34:31 even hiring musicians to play vigorously
34:33 to try to help them get all the dancing
34:35 out of their system this of course made
34:37 things much worse this event has baffled
34:39 scientists and historians for years but
34:42 many believe it could be the result of a
34:44 particular type of food poisoning yeah
34:46 crops like Rye can end up growing a type
34:48 of fungus that basically makes you crazy
34:50 could it be that this is what's
34:51 happening at East High in the High
34:53 School Musical Universe the characters
34:55 they sing and they dance and at first
34:56 you might think this is just just like
34:58 any other musical the characters aren't
34:59 really spontaneously breaking into song
35:02 it's more an artistic depiction of how
35:04 they're feeling but a closer look
35:05 reveals something shocking well firstly
35:08 sometimes they definitely are actually
35:09 singing like at the karaoke party now
35:11 you might think that A Moment Like get
35:13 you head in the game is totally
35:14 different you know that song doesn't
35:16 really exist within this universe but
35:19 what is Troy's ringtone in the second
35:23 movie but how could an entire School
35:25 become poisoned by a rare fungus this
35:28 man who convinced us he had relevant
35:29 qualifications believes it could have
35:31 been a certain freaky genius girl it
35:33 could be that by growing a fungus in a
35:35 lab Gabriel was able to manufacture a
35:38 sort of singing and dancing craze to
35:39 control Troy who I'm pretty sure would
35:41 have never done all of that stuff had he
35:43 not been under some kind of drug induced
35:45 hysteria after all Troy is so cool and
35:47 singing is for weirdos so it could be
35:49 the fungus or maybe Gabrielle is some
35:51 kind of [ __ ] witch the High School
35:53 Musical bonus soundtrack you love High
35:56 School Musical hits like get you head in
35:58 the game well now's your chance to own
36:00 the extended soundtrack featuring songs
36:02 that didn't quite make the final cut
36:04 like coach Bolton's crisis what's up
36:07 guys I'm 16 I'm the new player on the
36:09 basketball team I'm really excited to
36:12 play yeah Mr Bolton we know it's you and
36:14 Gabriel is on the news a little boy
36:16 drown in the pool oh no a little boy
36:18 drown in the pool no where was The
36:21 Lifeguard having a picnic and a preview
36:24 of the finale song from High School
36:26 Musical 3 we're all friends together
36:29 with each other we're all together at
36:32 the end again and we're friends we're
36:35 still friends and classmates we go to
36:37 school together we learned a lesson and
36:40 now we're going to switch
36:42 clothes from the guys High School
36:45 Musical 2 Broke the premiere record that
36:47 the first High School Musical had just
36:49 set instead of 7 million viewers this
36:51 one had 17 million viewers so of course
36:55 they had to make a third one high school
36:57 Musical 3 senior Year the only one in
37:00 the franchise with a subtitle now
37:03 outside of the fact that they're all
37:04 seniors in this movie which I can tell
37:05 by the title of the film I actually know
37:09 next to nothing about this one I've
37:12 never seen it yeah I know I made it
37:14 sound like I was a really big High
37:15 School Musical fan but by the time the
37:16 third one came out I was 14 and unlike
37:19 the first two this one came out in
37:20 theaters and as a freshman in high
37:22 school I was much too embarrassed to ask
37:24 my friends if they would go see a High
37:26 School Musical movie in theaters with me
37:28 so I decided it would be way less
37:30 embarrassing if I waited until I was 30
37:32 years old to watch it for the first time
37:33 in front of millions of people and we're
37:35 back at East tie baby Zach's playing
37:38 basketball there's a there's a dog in
37:41 the crowd is this an airbud crossover
37:43 Zack's like oh my head's just not in the
37:45 game tonight can we get in the sub this
37:47 gold lab comes in and just slam dunks it
37:49 a couple times the movie opens on the
37:51 wild cats with their backs against the
37:53 wall it's the championship game they're
37:55 behind and there's only 16 minutes
37:58 left whoa Mr Bolton rocking a middle
38:01 part that's new Mr Bolton gives a speech
38:05 about how there's only 16 minutes left
38:07 16 minutes left and then they sing a
38:09 song about how there's only 16 minutes
38:11 [Applause]

38:14 left ooh a song about there being 16
38:17 minutes left in a game we're getting
38:19 very specific with these songs I think
38:20 they're starting to run out of

38:25 ideas this is the last time make Dad
38:28 proud if I don't then he never will be

38:33 game again I'm noticing right away that
38:36 this movie is like much higher
38:39 production value than the other two I'm
38:41 curious to see the budget on this bad
38:43 boy cuz this movie looks like they
38:44 actually like lit it the other two just
38:48 kind of look like they set up cameras
38:50 and started filming but there's there's
38:52 lights in this
38:54 one so now they're having like the
38:56 biggest high school rager ever and they
38:58 expect us to believe that they're not
39:00 insanely Rich this is I'm pretty sure
39:02 this is in Troy's backyard hey Troy
39:05 great house bro your room is Way Cool oh
39:08 thanks yeah you were in my room well
39:11 yeah I just took a picture yeah I just
39:13 took a picture of your room man he's a
39:14 secret agent for the IRS he's like how
39:17 did your family get so rich well another
39:20 top secret hiding
39:22 place you're the second girl I've ever
39:24 had up here yeah it is top secret I
39:26 couldn't even see it up there
39:27 just looks like a regular Tree to me
39:29 it's here we find out that while Troy is
39:31 a shoe in for the basketball team at UFA
39:34 Gabriel has already been accepted to
39:36 Stanford I sense a conflict in the movie
39:39 Troy's going to University of
39:41 Albuquerque to play basketball and
39:43 Gabriella is going to learn how to
39:45 create the singularity at Stanford so
39:48 they sing a song about cherishing the
39:49 present moment did they like challenge
39:52 themselves to make a song with no
39:53 dancing in this one but like what if we
39:56 just sat for a whole song o now he's up
39:58 well that was it that was the whole
40:01 dance no it doesn't work with this song
40:04 juliard is considering four of you for
40:07 one available scholarship Sharpe Evans
40:10 Mr Ryan Evans Miss Kelsey nson and
40:15 lastly Mr Troy Bolton
40:23 what since when does that guy have a
40:25 evil cackle I mean I was surprised too
40:28 but that guy threw his head back and
40:32 squealed he submit his name to juliard
40:35 to some kind of evil plan to get him
40:37 killed they're trying to come up with
40:38 some ideas for the spring musical which
40:40 I'm just now realizing they write every
40:43 year like they don't do a pre-existing
40:45 musical they write their own musical
40:47 every year all of you will create it
40:49 that's why in the first movie they call
40:51 Kelsey the composer she literally writes
40:53 the musical isn't that crazy but to get
40:55 some ideas Miss Daris asks the seniors
40:58 about their future your
41:00 future it's easy it's U OFA Hoops all
41:04 the way yeah is University of
41:07 Albuquerque like a really good school
41:09 for basketball I feel like I've never
41:11 heard of them before all the basketball
41:13 players are like we got to get to UFA
41:15 man it seems like that's just like the
41:17 closest college that has a basketball
41:19 team meanwhile Gabrielle is going to
41:21 Stanford sharp is going to juliar and
41:23 they're like I don't know we can go play
41:25 basketball down the street for the
41:26 record the reason I've never heard of
41:28 the University of Albuquerque is because
41:30 it's a Catholic liberal art school that
41:33 actually um closed in 1986 so I guess
41:36 these characters live in some sort of
41:38 alternate Dimension where it stayed open
41:40 and went on to become a basketball
41:42 Powerhouse Mr
41:45 Bolton Mr Bolton yeah
41:48 uh all of a sudden he doesn't know if he
41:51 wants to go to juliard or UFA see he
41:53 really never did care about Gabriella he
41:56 just wants to sing
41:57 somebody just let this kid sing just
41:59 tell him it's
42:04 okay that song started so abruptly no
42:08 intro no buildup it's kind of
42:11 [Music]
42:13 scary oh this is a a look into some kind
42:16 of strange alternate future where Troy
42:18 chose neither basketball or juliard and
42:21 became a stalker I want that to be how
42:23 this movie ends Troy choosing between
42:25 two incredible Futures and instead he
42:27 just throws his life away like I can't I
42:29 can't decide I don't [ __ ] know Miss D
42:32 said that there's only one scholarship
42:34 there's two of us wait they're doing
42:36 this to compete for a scholarship not
42:38 even just a like a place at juliard if I
42:41 know anything about these two it's that
42:43 they can both afford to go to juliar why
42:46 do they need to take the scholarship
42:47 away from somebody else which one do you
42:49 think I should wear well I've never been
42:51 asked to a prom but this almost sounds
42:53 like an invitation did she say she's
42:55 never been asked to prom
42:58 what about last year they were dating
42:59 last year Troy didn't want to go to prom
43:01 with her his dad was probably making him
43:03 run basketball drills the only place
43:04 you're going Troy is downtown with the
43:07 ball make sure you bring the ball time
43:08 for another song about how much Troy and
43:11 Gabriella love each other there's
43:12 already like two very sentimental songs
43:15 between these two they are really
43:17 setting us up for heartbreak I feel and
43:19 also just spending like an unnecessary
43:20 amount of time being like these two are
43:22 in love okay don't don't forget that
43:25 they're in love that way when whatever
43:26 happen happens happens we're going to
43:28 all be sad all right so that way when
43:30 Troy picks UFA and Gabriella gets hit by
43:33 a bus it's going to be sad I think
43:35 they're going to end up going to the
43:36 same College they they couldn't possibly
43:38 end this entire series by being like eh
43:41 they didn't actually like each other
43:42 that much they're just going to they're
43:43 just going to call it
43:46 quits where's our clothes yo Rocket Man
43:49 why do I feel like they're about to Haze
43:50 these kids you know we weren't just
43:52 given these lockers we had to earn them
43:54 right right oh they're definitely about
43:55 to Haze these kids now drink this entire
43:57 bottle of absolute that'd be a crazy
43:59 twist in this
44:02 movie just a little hazing Troy is not
44:05 better than doing some hazing Oh I
44:07 thought I heard you I was just making
44:09 some snacks inside are you guys hungry
44:11 only if it's your brownies I've had them
44:13 I've had them I've had them bring those

44:17 school to check out that tuxedo tuxedo

44:28 yourself he's like okay I wasn't
44:32 inviting you I'm going to ask Miss Daris
44:34 then comes a song about getting ready
44:35 for prom featuring I think the funniest
44:38 moment in any of these
44:42 movies weird yo this movie is kind of
44:44 funny
44:48 man makes me look
44:52 weird I like that they're like should I
44:54 wear pla or Ruffles or a really old suit
44:57 and it's like no you should wear just go
44:59 just go to Men's Warehouse and ask for a
45:01 prom tuxedo should I wear the ugliest
45:04 thing that you've ever seen now just go
45:07 tell them you're going to prom and
45:08 they'll just give you the most generic
45:10 tux you've ever
45:13 seen this reminds me of when I was a
45:16 senior in high school and I was getting
45:17 ready to go for prom and I sang this
45:19 song called it's going to be the Night
45:21 to Remember and me and all my boys got
45:23 dressed up in weird suits and danced
45:25 around on the stage this is kind of just
45:28 like that actually let's Dan am I crazy
45:30 or is is there like actually too much
45:33 music in this movie I feel like the plot
45:35 is kind of moving at a snail's pace cuz
45:37 every 2 minutes there's a song and it's
45:39 like here's what's going on right now
45:41 we're thinking about going to prom we're
45:43 Troy and Gabriella we like each other
45:45 also the stakes feel very low right now
45:47 what am I supposed to be worried about
45:49 right now Troy is like I don't know what
45:51 college I want to go to and Gabriella's
45:52 like I also have choices to make I still
45:55 have decisions to make too and she has

46:37 friends this kind of reminds me of
46:39 senior year in high school when I danced
46:40 around in the junkyard with my best
46:42 friend and we sang a song about how the
46:44 boys are
46:45 back it's weirdly similar

48:58 I like that they're performing for the
49:00 camera and not for the audience who's
49:03 here to see them graduate they're just
49:05 like facing away from the bleachers all
49:07 their parents are like damn I wish I
49:08 could see their faces I don't even know
49:10 which one's my kid now they're all now
49:13 they're all just going to smile at the
49:15 camera for the rest of their lives they
49:18 say we're not going to college baby
49:20 we're going to stare at this camera
49:24 forever and that's it that's high school
49:26 schol musical baby as far as endings go
49:28 I think they did a decent job with a
49:30 nearly impossible task it's a Disney
49:32 Channel movie so it's not like they can
49:34 just like make everybody break up and go
49:36 their separate ways at the end of the
49:37 movie that would be too sad obviously
49:39 but they also can't make everybody just
49:41 go to the same college and do the same
49:43 thing cuz that would be unrealistic so
49:45 it leaves the door open my only issue is
49:47 that in doing that they kind of don't
49:49 really provide any closure feels like
49:51 they kind of just pushed Troy's decision
49:52 of what he wants to do with his life
49:54 further down the road but if you are
49:56 looking for some closure for Troy I
49:58 might have something that
50:00 helps I mentioned earlier that the
50:02 character of Troy was inspired by one of
50:04 the writer's real high school teammates
50:06 but when I read that for the first time
50:07 on Wikipedia I was surprised to find
50:10 that that teammate has his own Wikipedia
50:13 article and that's because that
50:14 classmate Lyn Swan went on to be a
50:16 professional football player playing for
50:19 the Pittsburgh Steelers and winning the
50:21 Super Bowl four times this man is the
50:23 real life Troy Bolton and that might be
50:25 the least interesting thing about him in
50:28 fact he might not even know it really
50:30 helped you in your game all the things
50:32 that ballet taught you you applied that
50:34 to the football field touchdown
50:35 Pittsburgh did you catch any Flack from
50:38 your teammates about taking ballet I
50:40 mean oh
50:46 always it's a gift from the guys but
50:50 I'll always remember a Hall of Famer Who
50:52 Rose to the occasion each time a paa
50:56 making playmaker but you're playmaker
50:58 did you ever think maybe I could be
