And scientists are warning that Earth is
spinning faster over the coming months.
It's going to happen
and shortening several days. In fact,
July 9th was the shortest day ever
recorded. And that's thanks to the
moon's unique alignment with our planet.
[Music]
For eons, Earth's rotation has been
gradually, almost imperceptibly, decelerating,
decelerating,
largely due to the moon's gravitational drag.
drag.
This cosmic tango has been the bedrock
of our understanding of planetary mechanics.
mechanics.
Yet, since around 2020, this
millennialong trend has shockingly
reversed. Our planet has been spinning
progressively faster, culminating in
today's record-breaking brevity with
July 9th shortened by up to 1.6 milliseconds.
milliseconds.
This tiny fraction of a second
imperceptible to human senses is a big
anomaly to the ultra precise atomic
clocks that govern our global timekeeping.
timekeeping.
Scientists are baffled. This isn't the
usual slowing under tidal drag. It's the
opposite. Scientists say the reason
could be a combo of the moon's distant
orbital position and mysterious forces
deep within Earth's core. [Music]
Possibly amplified by shifting water and
melting ice mass. These phenomena by
subtly altering the planet's mass
distribution could indeed influence its
rotational speed. Much like a spinning
ice skater drawing their arms in to accelerate.
accelerate.
While some events have been known to
change Earth's rotation,
the 9.0 Japan earthquake in 2011
shortened the day by 1.8 micro seconds,
but experts say that no one knows what's
causing the current trend. As the Earth
races ahead, humanity is left to ponder
the profound cosmic forces at play,
fundamentally challenging our
understanding of our own planet's
rhythmic dance in the cosmos. [Music]
