Core Theme
The Christmas story is profoundly intertwined with the presence and actions of angels, who serve not only as messengers but also as witnesses and protectors, highlighting the significance of Jesus' incarnation and humanity's salvation.
let's just talk for a moment about the
reasons for the Angels at Christmas why
do they show up why are they present why
did God employ them in such a way well
let me give you some suggestions first
of all they are important in this story
because of their
curiosity the Angels had seen the Son of
God in his deity but never until now had
they seen him enshrined in
humanity God incarnate that was new to
them they had seen their lord as the
governor of the universe but never and
now un the subject of the universe he
was obeying his own law as if he were a
mere creature and in the attitude of a
servant they had seen thousands of
people worship and adore him but never
until now had they seen him so fragile
so small so
vulnerable can you understand coming at
it from an angel's perspective all of
your whole existence from the first day
of creation till day Jesus was sent into
this world all you did was worship the
Son of God and then one day the news
rattled Around Heaven that God the
father had a plan that included sending
his son into this world to become a man
can you imagine the Angels who would
worship Him from that day forward
wondering what that was all about
curious to know what God was up to
realizing everything they had been
accustomed to is about to change God the
Father in Heaven has sending his son to
the Earth and how will they be involved
and what will they do how will they have
a different Ministry than they already
have surely those are the thoughts that
went through the Angel's minds they
wondered after it the Bible actually
tells us they were curious about it they
wanted to know what was going on can you
imagine the Angels being curious about
you Billy Graham collected and retold
many reputable stories of experiences
with angels
including this family account of his
maternal grandmother's death he wrote
the room seemed to fill with a Heavenly
light she sat up in bed and almost
laughingly said I see Jesus he has his
arms outstretched toward me I see Ben
her husband who had died some years
earlier and I see the Angels then she
slumped over absent from the body
present with the Lord biligram said when
he was asked do you believe in angels He
said not only because they're in the
Bible do I believe them but because I
have sensed their presence in many
occasions when I would go to preach and
would be so spent from all that had
happened to me during the week that had
the Angels not attended me I would never
have been able to finish my
sermon God has become especially real to
me he said at times like that sent his
unseen Angelic visitors to touch my body
and let me be his messenger for heaven
angels are a pretty interesting subject
I actually wrote a whole book about
angels once and it was back during the
angel craze when everybody had an angel
for everything remember that someone has
said the Bible is a hive of angelic
activity Jesus had more encounters with
angels than just about anybody in the
course of his life time Angels both good
and evil have appeared to him many times
he has conversed with angels argued with
them silenced a few of them believe it
or not claimed on one occasion to have
several thousand of them at his
disposal he knows more about angels than
any other not just because of what's in
the Bible but because he created them
that's right Jesus created the angels
and as you study the story of his birth
you will find angels in fact if you
study the story of his life there are
seven major events in the life of Our
Lord where Angels show up it's a good
way to outline the life of Jesus every
important thing that happened to him an
angel was involved obviously at the
moment of his birth Angels were present
and they ministered to him during his
temptation in the wilderness Matthew
chapter 4 they strengthened him in his
hour of Agony they proclaimed the
Triumph of his
resurrection and they will accompany him
when he comes back the second time first
to take us to heaven and then with us to
set up his kingdom on this
Earth it should come as no surprise then
that when you tell the Christmas story
you can't do it without talking about
the Angels because they play such an
important role in the birth of our Lord
the Angels knew him long before he ever
came here as you know Jesus didn't begin
at Bethlehem he just became a man at
Bethlehem but he knew the angels and the
angels knew him long before that Paul
wrote in 1 Timothy
3:16 and without controversy great is
the mystery of godliness God was
manifested in the flesh justified in the
spirit notice seen by Angels that's
right seen by
Angels when Jesus came to this earth the
Angels watched they watched as he was
born into the world of humanity how they
must have been thrilled to see their
creator clothed in humanity but they did
far more than watch him from heaven they
were involved in every step of the way
for instance as we examine the role of
the Angels at Christmas we see that they
anticipated his coming 6 months before
the angel Gabriel came to Mary about the
birth of Jesus this very same Angel was
dispatched by God to a priest in Israel
whose name was
Zachariah now Zachariah and his wife had
been childless and they' been praying to
have a
child the purpose purp of the Angelic
visit to Zachariah was to tell him that
his wife Elizabeth was going to have a
baby and of course after many years of
childlessness this was good news that
son according to the angel would be
called John we know him as John the
Baptist and he would be the Forerunner
of Jesus Christ the angel said to himo
not be afraid Zacharias for your prayer
is heard and your wife Elizabeth will
bear you a son and you shall call his
name John this was a preview kind of a
Prelude to the coming of the Lord Jesus
for when John was born he was born to be
the voice crying in the wilderness
prepare ye the way of the Lord and
everywhere he went he said Behold the
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the
the
world that anticipation in the birth of
John was the first instance of angelic
involvement but then then they announced
his birth first of all to Mary in Luke 1
we read about that 6 months after
Zachariah was told about John's birth
Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her
that she was going to give birth to a
child and that this child would be the
long awaited Messiah and savior of the
world in verses 26 and 27 of the first
chapter of Luke we read now in the sixth
month the angel Gabriel was sent by God
to a city of Galilee named named
Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man
whose name was Joseph of the House of
David and the virgin's name was Mary the
angel wasn't finished because as you
know when he told Mary that she was
going to be with child and it would be
of the Holy Spirit and not by Joseph and
she became pregnant this created quite
an issue and Joseph her betrothed
husband did not know anything about it
until the angel showed up one day in
love and concern God dispatched his
Angel to send Joseph special information
Matthew 1 20 and 21 says behold an angel
of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a
dream saying Joseph son of David do not
be afraid to take to you marry your wife
for that which is conceived in her is of
the Holy Spirit and she will bring forth
the son and you shall call his name
Jesus for he will save his people from
their sin a lot of other people called
Jesus in the day when Jesus Christ was
born but not any other Jesus could have
this said of them that he would save his
people from their sin Matthew 1:21 says
and she shall bring forth a son and they
shall call his name Jesus for he will
save his people from their
sins then of course there is the
announcement to the Shepherds of all the
events that surround our Lord's birth
the announcement to the Shepherds is the
most dramatic I like i' like to try to
imagine with you for a moment what it
must have been like in the hills of
Bethlehem when the message from the
Angels Came Bethlehem was obscure and
when the message from the Angels Came
imagine several Shepherds huddled around
a small campfire in the middle of the
field they're wearing coats made of
camel's hair for warmth and they have
huddled in the valley to get out of the
wind some of them are talking softly
While others are curled up in beds made
by piling rushes and they sleep ing
except for the occasional tinkle of a
bell around a lead sheep's neck there
was no sound at all maybe the sound of a
stick crackling in the fire are you
getting the
picture and then the angel of the Lord
appeared and the angel saido not be
afraid for behold I bring you good
tidings of great joy which shall be to all
all
people Luke wrote and behold and we see
that word and we pass right by it
it means suddenly all at once without
any warning the Angels Came Upon
them must have been something like a jet
breaking the sound barrier it got their
attention I promise
you and scripture seems to state that
these angels are actually composed of flaming
flaming
fire have you ever noticed as you study
the scriptures that Angels appear with
fire a lot in the Bible men are made of
natural and chemical elements angels are
not in fact when you read your Bible
angels and fire appear in the same text
very often the scriptures seem to
indicate that there was something very
fiery about the angels I read something
recently where somebody said we treat
Angels like what you say to them is
they're there everything will be
okay we treat them as pets we treat them
as necessary people to fill in the
pictures but don't you ever do that
Angels were powerful
most powerful creatures apart from
almighty God in Matthew 28:2 in the
resurrection story we are told that one
Angel rolled the stone away from the
grave you see the stone that was in
front of the tomb where Jesus was buried
would have been a piece of granite 8T in
diameter and 2 feet thick and would have
weighed some four tons or 8,000 lb if
you read the story carefully you
discover that the angel didn't just pull
the shim out from under the stone and
let it roll back from the tomb no the
Bible says that the angel flipped the
stone as it were a pebble and it landed
in a field away from the grave by the
way the stone wasn't rolled away so
Jesus could get out but so that people
could get in and see that it was
empty but one Angel did that they're
strong angels are masculine and they
come with power and they came with power
into the story of the the Incarnation
angels are powerful they are not play
things they're not pets they're not nice
little things to believe in the angels
of God his immediate and first creation
of anything that has personality angels
are invincible they are not omnipotent
but they are
Mighty so that changes the Christmas
story just a little bit doesn't
it and they accompany Jesus not only in
his birth but in his
life Jesus is now born he's a young
child and wicked ha's coming after him
after the birth of Jesus the Angels do
not abandon him but they continue to
show great concern for him and it was
the Angels who warned Jesus and his
parents about herod's cruel plan now
when they had departed behold an angel
of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream
dream
saying arise take the young child and
his mother flee to Egypt and stay stay
there till I bring you word for Herod
will seek the young child to destroy him
so Jesus parents Joseph and Mary took
Jesus and they went to Egypt how would
they know when it was safe to come back
oh don't worry about that the angels
have got it God has an angel ready to
bring them news now when Herod was dead
an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream
to Joseph in Egypt saying arise and take
the young child and his mother go to the
land of Israel for those who sought the
young child's life are dead
so now jesus' parents know it's time to
bring him back to Israel all along the
way from the announcements to the
protection from herod's Cruel plan we
see how the Angels fit in to the story
of Christmas the role of the Angels at
Christmas but let's just talk for a
moment about the reasons for the Angels
at Christmas why do they show up why are
they present why did God employ them in
such a way well let me give you some
suggestions first of all they are
important in this story because of their

have surely those are the thoughts that
went through the Angel's minds they
wondered after
the Bible actually tells us they were
curious about it they wanted to know
what was going on can you imagine the
Angels being curious about you wondering
what's going on with you that's the way
they were in fact here's what Peter says
about that in 1 Peter
1:12 to the prophets it was revealed
that not to themselves but to us they
were ministering the things which now
have been reported to you through those
who have preached the gospel to you by
the Holy Spirit Sent From Heaven now
watch this phrasee things which Angels
desire to look into you would think well
what would Angels desire they would know
everything wouldn't they no angels are
not omnicient and I can tell you one
thing they don't know anything about
they don't know anything about what it
means to be saved because theyve never
been lost angels never knew the joy of
Salvation and the Bible says they desire
to look into it they want to understand
it how could you understand salvation if
you've never been lost how could you
understand salvation if you'd never gone
through the Journey that we've gone
through the Bible says because we have
been where we were and God brought us to
where we are our status privilege wise
is greater than that of the Angels
they're more powerful than we are no
question but we have much greater
privilege they're also important because
of their contribution when you study the
life of angels you realize they're
always for good the angel who spoke to
Zachariah was comforting but he was an
angent of discipline for instance if you
remember the story when Zachariah
doubted the Angel's prophecy about the
birth of Elizabeth's child the angel
struck him speechless until the child
was born he didn't speak a word until
John the Baptist was
born that son John would play such an
important role in the life of Jesus that
same messenger Gabriel visited Mary and
encountered his visitor in a dream but
the message was just just as important
Mary needed the support that her husband
could bring and in each case the Angels
gave careful instruction in fact the
entire biblical record shows us just how
eager angels are to help us in scripture
Heavenly Messengers delivered lot from
Sodom they guided Israel through the
Wilderness they fed Elijah under the
juniper tree they surrounded Elisha with
chariots they gave Hezekiah victory over
Assyria they LED Isaiah to spiritual
commitment they directed Ezekiel to
Ministry and they gave John a tour of
Heaven Angels did all that the Bible
teaches us that in ways we don't fully
understand God has assigned angels to
minister his children on Earth Hebrews
1:14 says are not all Angels ministering
Spirits sent to serve those who will
inherit salvation and the question comes
up Pastor Jeremiah do you believe in
guardian angels there's no specific
verse in the Bible that says every
Christian has his own
angel I can't prove that I don't want to
argue about it when I was getting ready
to go into the ministry I was going
through my ordination service and back
in those days when you were ordained
when you presented your theology paper a
group of pastors and Christian leaders
would interrogate you about what you
believed it was kind of like going
before the
Sanhedrin on my ordination was quite
different because my parents were both
there including my
mother and one of the questioners asked
me this question Mr Jeremiah do you
believe in guardian angels and before I
could answer my mother said if he
do she had watched how many times I
could have killed myself doing the
stupid stuff I did I could tell you some
stories but I
won't yeah we all probably have an
Inkling that somewhere along the way in
our life an angel may have stepped in to
provide protection or Assurance for us
I'll be honest I've never seen an angel
except my wife
wife [Music]
[Music]
yeah I wrote a book about angels years
ago and whenever I would sign that book
I'd write this in the book Psalm 9111 he
shall give his angels charge over you to
keep you in all your way
and then there's Psalm 34:7 the angel of
the Lord encamps around all those who
fear Him and delivers them I have read
several books on encounters with angels
I would say the majority of them happen
on the mission field where God's
Messengers are isolated and there's no
other way for help to come except
through a divine intervention do I
believe those stories I do I believe
that God still uses his angels in the
world in which we live when it's
necessary for him to do that they are
important because of their curiosity and
their contribution and they are
important because of their celebration
oh what a celebration they had outside
of Bethlehem when the announcement came
about Jesus they continued to worship
what were they doing in heaven before
the Angels came to this earth they were
worshiping what did they do when they
first showed up they were worshiping
what do you think they're doing now
they're worshiping when we get get to
heaven we will worship with them there's
an abundant places where it says Saints
and Angels we're going to be in the
angel choir we're going to sing together
when we get there our our voices will be
perfected and the angel's voices always
have been what a moment that will be so
in this message about angels remember
there's nothing wrong with being curious
about them they're a blessing to us we
know that for sure but let's not get it
backwards they aren't the focus of
Christmas Jesus is as one author put it
let us wonder about the Angels but
worship their God for every look we take
at them let us take 10 looks at the
object of their gaze Jesus Christ the
one who was made lower than angels that
he might raise us above them if you
focus on what the Bible says about the
Angels you will be drawn to Jesus
because the angels are all about Jesus
and when you allow Jesus to be the focus
of your life he changes everything
I'm going to tell you an interesting
little story you might think a bit
strange to be in this message but it
really spoke to me some of you may
remember this from literature in high
school or
college it's from a book by Brent Hart
and the story is the luck of the Roaring
Camp was written in 1868 it's a short
story that takes place in California in
the story Roaring Camp is the meanest
toughest mining town in the wild west of
1805 it's a terrible Place marked by
theft and murder the camp is inhabited
entirely by men and one woman who tries
to save and serve them all her name is
Cherokee s but she dies while giving
birth to a baby so the men take the baby
and put him in a box that used to hold
Dynamite sticks and they Place some old
flannel Rags around the baby and they
bury the baby's mother and then they're
trying to figure out what are we going
to do with this baby send him to the
closest camp with women that's 40 mil
away to make a short story shorter they
decide to keep the baby right there in
Roy Camp all these mean men and they
name him luck Tommy luck they send some
one man to a town to buy a real cradle
for the baby another's dispatched to
Sacramento to get some proper blankets and
and
supplies but the Rosewood cradle and the
baby blankets make the house look filthy
so the tough men get on their hands and
knees and scrub the floor clean that
only makes the dirty walls look dirty so
they wash them down and on and on it
goes since babies need lots of sleep the
men stop Their Rockers brawling and
fighting as the baby begins to imitate
sounds and learn the language they clean
up their vocabularies and stop
swearing and when the baby begins to
walk and play Outdoors they plant grass
and put flowers in the garden you're
following the
story that baby changed
everything I want you to know the story
of a baby who really changed everything
his name is Jesus born in Bethlehem and
today we Revel at the changes he made
and remark about the fact that he's
still making changes is he not is he not
changing our lives every day this
Christmas many of our Lives will be
changed as we realize that God sent his
only begotten son into this world yes he
was a baby in a baby's time but he grew
to be a man and in that adult body went
to a cross and paid the penalty for your
sin and mine the baby keeps changing
things changed my life changed yours and
he will change any life that will invite
that savior into their heart just as the
inkeeper ultimately found a place for
Jesus I want to ask you will you find a
place for him will you invite him into
your life will you let him be born into
your spirit so that he can guide and
direct you and keep changing things in
your life for the better from this
moment on that's what Christmas is all
about that's the message of the Gospel
it's the message of Christ who came at
the beckon call of his father said in
coming lo I come in the volume of the
book it is written to do thy will oh God
and the will of God he did and salvation
is the gift that
comes at this [Music]
