Core Theme
The sermon uses the Old Testament figure of Joshua as a spiritual type for Jesus Christ, illustrating how believers are called to move beyond salvation (leaving Egypt) into a full inheritance and victory in Christ (entering Canaan) by faith and obedience.
we open the word of God to the book of
Hebrews we're thinking today about
Joshua as a picture of the Lord Jesus
Christ a
type and so we're reading Hebrews chapter
chapter
2 verses
thou Hast put all things in subjection
under his
feet for in that he put all in
subjection under him he left nothing
that is not put under
him but now we see not yet all things
put under him but we see
Jesus who was made a little lower than
the angels for the suffering of death
crowned with Glory and Honor that he by
the grace of God should taste death for every
every
man for it became him for whom are all
things and by whom are all things in
bringing many sons un glory to make the
captain of their
salvation perfect through
sufferings chapter 4 verse
one let us therefore fear lest a
promised being left us of entering into
his rest any of you should seem to come
short of it for unto us was the Gospel
preached as well as unto them but the
word preached did not profit them not
being mixed with faith in them that
heard it for we who have believ do enter
into rest as he said as I have sworn in
my wrath if they shall enter into my
rest although the works were finished
from the foundation of the
world for he spoke in a certain place of
the seventh day in this way and God did
rest the seventh day from all his works
and in this place again if they shall
enter into my
rest seeing therefore it remaineth that
some must enter into it and they to whom
it was first preached entered not in
because of
unbelief again he limith a certain day
saying in David today after so long a
time as it is said today if you will
hear his voice Harden not your hearts
for if Joshua had given them
rest then would he not afterward have
spoken of another
day there remaineth therefore a rest to
the people of God for he that is entered
into his rest he also hath ceased from
his own works as God did from his let us
labor therefore to enter into that rest
lest any man fall after the same example of
of
unbelief and that rest is found in Jesus
Christ the the only thing that most
people know about Joshua is that he fit
the Battle of
Jericho and this is really
unfortunate the Hebrew people have
produced many Giants throughout
history Abraham who forsook idolatry to
worship the true
God Joseph who preserved the nation when
he went to
Egypt Moses the great legislator David
the great
king the prophets like Isaiah and
Jeremiah John the
Baptist our lord
Jesus truly salvation is of the
Jews and among the Great Men of the
Hebrew nation is
Joshua and you and I had better get to
know this man Joshua because he is the
Nam sake of our Lord
Jesus Joshua is the uh name
jehoshua which means Jehovah is
salvation and by the time you get to the
New Testament it becomes Jesus Thou
shalt call his name Jesus for he shall
save his people from their
sins and so Joshua is a picture to us of
the Lord Jesus Christ
and it is in this way I'd like to
approach Joshua in this message
today you see Joshua is known for three great
great
achievements it was Joshua who brought
the people into the promised land it was
Joshua who led their armies as they
conquered the promised land and it was
Joshua who helped them to lay hold of their
their
inheritance now these three great
achievements of of
Joshua are also achievements of the Lord
Jesus did you know my friend that the
Lord Jesus Christ your
Joshua can bring you into the
land that the Lord Jesus Christ your
Joshua can give you victory over the
enemy and the Lord Jesus Christ your
Joshua can help you to claim your inheritance
inheritance
now these are the three achievements I'd
like us to think about let's take the first
first
one Jesus Christ like Joshua helps us to
enter the land now when you read the Old
Testament you have to realize that the
geography is
inspired whenever God talks about Egypt
he's talking about much more than just
simply a piece of property when he talks
about Canaan he's not just talking about
about a piece of
geography in the word of God places like
Egypt and Jerusalem and Bethlehem have
much deeper spiritual meanings this is
not true in our Atlas if you take a map
of Illinois though there are places in
Illinois that have deep historical
interest to them none of them is
inspired but in the word of God Egypt
stands for something and the Wilderness
stands for something
and Canaan land stands for something in
fact everybody listening to me right now
is in one of those three
locations I don't mean geographically I
mean spiritually you see Egypt is a
picture of the
world and when you're living in Egypt
it's a picture of being lost being in
bondage when the nation of Israel was in
the land of Egypt they were slaves
they were being
whipped they were being
tormented and in the land of Egypt you
have the picture of condemnation and
sin God delivered the nation of Israel
from the land of Egypt he did it by the
power of the blood of the
Lamb on that Passover night it was the
blood of the Lamb on the door HST that
delivered the people of Egypt from the
death the Judgment of death that was
upon the land and then God opened up the
Red Sea and they marched through and he
closed the Red Sea and when he closed
the Red Sea he closed a chapter in the
lives of those people Egypt is a picture
of the lost
man and I suppose I speak to some right
now who are spiritually speaking living
in Egypt you're
you're
enslaved you are in
bondage you are under the worst task
master a person can endure
endure
sin for the wages of sin is
death and the soul that sinth it shall
die now you don't have to stay in Egypt
you can be delivered by the blood of the
Lamb this is why here at Moody Church
day after day and week after week we
Proclaim to people that Jesus Christ has
died for the sins of the world he is the
Lamb that was slain from before the
foundation of the world and through the
blood of Jesus Christ there is
deliverance from sin and from bondage
and from
Death now God's plan for the nation of
Israel was to bring them out of Egypt
into Canaan because Canaan is a picture
of our in inheritance in
Christ Canaan is not a picture of Heaven
it's unfortunate that in some of our
very fine hymns and gospel songs when
you get to the last verse they have you
Crossing Jordan and going into Canaan land
land
dying and this is not
scriptural in the word of God Canaan is
not a picture of Heaven because when
they got into Canaan land they had to
fight I trust when we get to heaven
we'll not have to fight the Lord knows
we've had enough fighting down here no
Canaan land is a picture of The
Inheritance that we have in Christ we
have been delivered from the bondage of
Egypt and now we are to enter in to all
of the fullness and the blessing and the
rest that God offers us in
Christ now sad to say in between Egypt
and Canaan is the wilderness
and God's plan for Israel was that they
make that 11-day Journey from Egypt to
the border of Canaan and then go
in but they said well we're not sure we
should go let's spy the land out they
already knew what the land was like God
told them what the land was like God
said it's a land of Hills and Valleys
it's a land of milk and honey it's a
land where you can get iron out of the
Rocks it's a land where you can get
honey out of the Rocks it's a land that
God watches over day and night a land
upon which he sends the
rain they knew what the land was like
but they're just like um people today oh
I'm afraid to do what God wants me to do
I don't know what may happen I'll tell
you what will happen if you do what God
wants you to do you'll be blessed and so
they sent the spies in and the spies
came back and it was a typical religious
divided the majority said we'll never
make it there are giants in the land we
look like grasshoppers next to
them I think God can take care of
grasshoppers and their cities the walls
are so high we looked at the men and
they were this high and we looked at the
walls and they were that high if they
would just kept look kept looking a
little higher they would have seen God
but they didn't they said we'll never
make it and they all began to weep they
said oh would to God we would have
stayed in Egypt oh let's go back let's
go back but two of the spies Caleb and
Joshua said we can do it God is for us
God has called us the God who opened up
the Red Sea can take us into
Canaan and you remember what happened
the majority voted not to go in and for
40 years they wandered around in the
wilderness and this is is where most
Believers are
today oh how sad it is that so many of
us have been delivered from Egypt that's
salvation but we have never by faith
entered into Canaan and here we are
wandering around did you ever read what
they did while they were wandering
around in the wilderness they [Music]
[Music]
complained now you don't read that they
complained in Canaan land I find one
time in Joshua where they murmured they
murmured at their leaders for making a
wrong decision but you don't find them
murmuring in Joshua like you do back in
numbers they murmured and they murmured
and they murmured and poor Moses would
put his ear would put his hands over his
ears and say oh God have I begotten all
of these people that I have to take them
like a mother and nurse them whenever
you find a complaining Christian mark it
down he's wandering in the
wilderness and they always want to go
back as they were wand they'd say oh
let's go back to Egypt let's go back to
the leaks and the onions and the garlic
oh let's go back when we had all that
security ah but it was not Liberty we
don't care we would rather have security
than be wering here in the
wilderness whenever you find a Christian
who says I want to go back to the old
life go back to the old amusements go
back to the old diet you write it down
he's walking in the wilderness
you see God wants us to enter into
Canaan and this is where Joshua comes in
how do you get into
Canaan well you don't get in with
Moses the first thing it says in the
Book of Joshua is Moses my servant is
dead the law will never take you into
your inheritance oh you say I'm going to
pray six times a day and I'm going to
tithe and I won't do this and I won't do
that and I'll make a list of rules my
friend you'll be miserable when you do
that you're putting yourself into
bondage God never wanted that God says
Moses is not going to take you into the
promised land the law can never do this
Joshua is going to take you in
yosua Jehovah is our Salvation Jesus is
going to take you
in through Christ we enter the land now
how do you do this well
well to get out of Egypt you need the
blood of the
Lamb that's how you're saved if somebody
here today says Pastor I am in bondage
to sin and I want to get out of that
bondage I say to you you need the blood
of the Lamb what can wash away our sin
nothing but the blood of Jesus would you
be free from the burden of sin there's
power in the
blood but you get into Canaan like
Land by crossing a
river you see when God wanted to get the
Jews out of Egypt he killed a lamb When
what when God wanted to get them into
Canaan he opened a river and he said I
want you to go through this River
walking through the Jordan River is not
a picture of dying we get this from
Pilgrim's Progress when Pilgrim gets to
the end of his journey he goes through
the river and gets to the Heavenly City
it's not that way in the
Bible no crossing the Jordan River means
dying to
self it means coming to that place where
I turn everything over to the Lord and
God said Joshua is your leader you
listen to Joshua you obey Joshua you
trust what he
does and God says to me Jesus is your
Joshua and you know the thing that keeps
you in the wilderness is your own
stubbornness you've got to have your own
way and your own will and when you come
to Jordan you've got to die to that let
me put it this way coming out of Egypt
means Christ died for me going into
Canaan means I died with
Christ coming out of Egypt is Romans
chap 5
God commendeth his love toward us in
that while we were yet sinners Christ
died for us coming into Canaan is Romans
6 reckon yourselves to be dead indeed
unto sin and Alive unto God through
Christ you see too many of us don't want
to have that kind of an experience we
want to stay in the wilderness where we
can still have a little bit of
Egypt we can have our own self-will I
would remind you if that crowd that
wandered in the wilderness
died scripture says there are carcasses
were buried in the wilderness oh if you
want to kill your testimony and kill
your joy and kill your power stay in the
wilderness but oh if you want to know
the fullness of Life In Christ cross the Jordan
Jordan
River die to self now when God opened up
the Jordan River he said to Joshua put
some stones in in the middle of this
River 12 of them and they did and then
the waters came and buried them he said
put 12 more Stones here on the shore and
they did and the children came and said
what are these 12 Stones on the shore
and father said uh oh there's 12 more in
the middle of the river there are how do
you know we put them there all what's it
mean it means that we went through this
River and when we did the old life was
buried and we came out to live in
newness of life
kind of a picture of baptism
baptism
buried with Christ and raised to walk in
newness of
life has Jesus Christ ever had the
privilege of taking you into
Canaan or are you still wandering in the
wilderness or worse yet are you still in
Egypt these three geographical locations
picture the three kinds of people in the
world today the natural man
Egypt the carnal man the Wilderness the
spiritual man Canaan land through Christ
we enter the land
secondly through Christ we conquer the
enemy no sooner did they get into Canaan
land than they faced an impossible task
Jericho I've met multitudes of
Christians who have said pastor we've
died to self by faith we have yielded to
the Lord we've been trying to live a
spiritual life we've been praying and
reading the word and obeying him and oh
are we facing the problems what's wrong
nothing one of the evidences that you've
gotten into Canaan land is that you face
almost impossible
situations when they were wandering in
the wilderness they didn't face too many
impossible situations God fed them and
God gave them water and and God LED them
and God waited until the whole crowd of
old people had died off and he took the
young crowd and started all over again
oh but you cross Jordan River and there
you are what's that
Jericho look at those
walls look at that we can't do it oh
wait a minute the same God who opened
the river and brought you through can
give you the victory
how did they take
Jericho they simply trusted the word of
God that's all God said to Joshua be
strong and of a good courage this word
of the law shall not depart out of thy
mouth now we carry the Bible in our
hands physically we ought to carry it in
our hearts and our mouths spiritually he
said Joshua I want you to chew on the
word I want you to meditate on the word
just like a cow chews its cud I want you
to take the word of God and chew on it
because this word gives you faith faith
comes by hearing and hearing by the word
of God he says Joshua every place you
put your feet I'll give it to you now
Joshua just step out by faith here's the
word step out by faith I'm going to
watch your feet and I'm going to watch
your mouth if you've got my word in your
mouth and you're stepping out by faith
you'll make it lots of Christians have
got hoof and mouth
disease they won't step out by faith and
they don't take time to chew on the word
of God and so here stands Jericho and
Joshua said let's have a parade and they
March around Jericho and someone says
he's lost his mind oh no I've noticed
when you enter into Canaan land that God
sometimes does things that seem foolish
to other people because the wisdom of
this world is foolishness with God but
the wisdom of God is foolishness to this
world and so they marched around had a
prayed the second day the seventh day
they went around seven times and you
remember how God conquered the enemy and
he'll do the same thing for
you somebody here today says Pastor I am
facing a Jericho situation the like of
which Joshua never saw we have got a
financial Jericho or we have a physical
Jero irle there's something that has to
be done here there are insurmountable
problems the same Joshua who brought you
into the land can enable you to conquer
the enemy be strong and of a good
courage Don't Be Afraid lay hold of the
promises of the word of God obey what he
says and God will give you
Victory now they didn't always have
Victory when you read the book of Joshua
you discover they had some
defeats they conquered Jericho what a
tremendous victory that was then they
had to go after ai ai was just a
little village not too far away and oh
they said we can handle this we just we
just whipped Jericho and in their
overconfidence they failed they came
back with their tails between their legs
they said Joshua what's wrong
this what happens to a person he he by
faith enters into Canaan land he starts
winning some great victories then he gets
gets
overconfident well he says I've got that
alcohol problem whipped and he's down
I've got that bad habit taken care of
and he's down oh I'll never face that
overconfidence a second reason for their
defeat was hidden sin aen you'll
remember had stolen from Jericho and
buried it and his hidden sin brought
defeat as you enter into Canaan land and
you begin to win one Victory after
another watch out for hidden
sin I tell you friends it's easier to
sin in the light of Victories than it is
in the light of defeats you say well
I've won these victories I'm not doing
as bad as I used to do so I can have
this little thing or that little thing
defeat a third cause of defeat in Canaan
land was not waiting for God's guidance
boy did they fool
Joshua one day some men showed up and
their clothes were old and moth eaten
their bread was just filled with
mold and it looked as though they had
walked from the ends of the Earth they
said oh we've come from a long distance
away and we hear that you are here and
we want to become your servants and so
you make a covenant with us and they
were just a they were just a few miles
away they were the gibian ites they were fooling
fooling
Joshua and Joshua didn't take time to
pray the leaders didn't take time for
God's will they rushed ahead and then
they discovered they'd made a covenant
with their
enemies you know people do make mistakes
preachers make
mistakes sometimes we judge by
appearances and don't wait on the Lord
Church officers make mistakes sometimes
we judge by appearances and don't wait
upon the Lord you know what Joshua did
he said we've made a covenant with you
and we're not going to break our
gianitsos
youa he's a man who knew how to get his
mistakes to work for
him now when you and I can get to the
place where we can get our mistakes to
work for us God will bless us Joshua
enabled them to enter the land oh my
friend Jesus Christ will enable you to
enter into this
land The Inheritance you have in
Christ through Christ we enter the land
and through Christ we conquer the enemy
finally and most
importantly through Christ we claim the
inheritance when you read the last part
of Joshua from about Oh chapter 13 or 14
to the end of the book you know what they're
they're
doing casting lots now we don't cast lots
lots
today because this was an Old Testament
Practice basically but they were casting
lots to see where the different tribes
would get their inheritance and the
tribe leaders would come up and they'd
cast lots and God would guide in the
casting of the lots and they would draw
on the map and say this belongs to
Joseph and this belongs to Judah and
this belongs to Ephraim they were
claiming their inheritance that's why
you go in the land we go into the land
and we conquer the enemy that we might
inheritance now my friend you and I have
a tremendous inheritance in Jesus
Christ I think far too many people think
that salvation is only a fire escape
from Eternal
judgment oh I'm so glad I'm saved they
say and I can just hardly wait till
Jesus comes back they say but in the
meantime oh am I miserable and God never
meant it to be that way miserable Saints
are bad advertising for the Lord Jesus
Christ the New Testament book that
parallels Joshua is
Ephesians in Ephesians we are told about
the wonderful inheritance we have in
Christ in fact in chapter 1 of Ephesians
Paul prays like this verse
17 I pray that the god of our Lord Jesus
Christ the father of Glory may give unto
you the spirit of
wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of
of
him the eyes of your understanding
literally the eyes of your heart being
enlightened that you may know what is
the hope of his calling and what the
riches of the glory of his
inheritance in the Saints what he's
saying here is oh that you might know
how rich you are in Christ and how rich
Christ is in you and oh that you would
inheritance during the Centennial of the
Civil War many stories were going around
about Abraham Lincoln the one that
interested me the most was about the old
soldier who used to wander from place to
place and B a bit of bread and a place
to sleep and anytime they'd be a crowd
he'd reach into his pocket and he'd pull
out his tattered old wallet and he'd
reach into this tattered old wallet and
get a piece of paper it was about ready
to fall apart and he'd say folks I want
you to know I've got Mr Lincoln's
signature and they'd look and say why
you sure
do one day a man said let me read that
paper Mr Lincoln signature happened to
be appended to a
a
pension from the United States
government for his service in the Army
and here was this man walking around
like a poverty stricken
stricken
hobo when he carried in his pocket a
signature that gave him all that he
needed now before we laugh at that man
let's look in the
mirror when you were
saved the holy the holy spirit of God
made you a part of Jesus Christ the Old
Testament Jew followed Joshua we are a
part of our Joshua where he is we are
John dares to say in his first letter as
he is so are we in this
world and we are bone of his bone and
flesh of his flesh and heartbeat of his
heartbeat he says now I want to share
with you my
inheritance I I've noticed in the book of
of
Ephesians 1: 7 he talks about the riches
of his
grace oh The Riches of his grace not
just saving grace but keeping Grace
Grace that strengthens us thou therefore
my son be strong in the grace that is in
Christ Jesus Oh you say I need Grace
it's there just claim it just come to
your heavenly Joshua and say I need
Grace The Riches of his grace I notice
in chapter 2 verse 4 The Riches of his
Mercy oh how we need
Mercy I notice in chap 3: 16 The Riches
of his glory that he would Grant you
according to the riches of his glory my
God shall supply all your need according
to his riches and Glory by Christ Jesus
why do we walk walk around like Heavenly
hobos when my father is rich in houses
and lands he holdeth the wealth of the
world in his hands rubies and diamonds
silver and gold his coffers are full he
has riches Untold and I'm a child of the
king through Jesus Christ you claim your
inheritance in fact says Paul in
Ephesians these riches are so wonderful
I can't describ them CH
3:8 unto me who am less than the least
of All Saints is this Grace given that I
should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable
unsearchable
riches the unsearchable riches I don't
care who the richest man is in the world
his riches are nothing he has a piggy
bank compared to the riches of Christ
unsearchable and God says I want you to
go on in and claim your inheritance now
you why many Saints are
unhappy they want to Mark out their own
inheritance Lord I've got to have this
girl for my wife I've got to have this
fellow for my husband I've got to have
this job or this a home address we don't
tell the Lord this we tell him our
desires we tell him our needs there's a
beautiful statement back in Psalm
47 verse
4 the Lord shall choose our inheritance
in itance for us I like that whenever
you're watching some other Saint and you
think he's got more than you've got read
Psalm 474 the Lord shall choose our
inheritance for us let him Mark out your
inheritance and claim it through Jesus
Christ and of course with this
inheritance comes
rest we say how could they have rest
when they were fighting rest in the
Bible never means rest from labor it
means rest in labor it never means rest
from conflict as long as you are in this
flesh you will fight
battles it means Rest In
In
conflict the peace of God that passes
all understanding oh Joshua gave them
rest politically Joshua gave them rest
militarily Joshua gave them rest
economically Joshua couldn't give them
rest spiritually but Jesus does and our
Lord Jesus Christ our Heavenly Joshua
gives to us that peace that passes all
understanding so as we fight the battle
we fight the battle with peace in our
hearts as we claim The Inheritance
there's that peace of God I'm so glad
that I know my heavenly Joshua the
embarrassing thing in my life is that I
have claimed so little of what he's
purchased for me I'm like some of those
tribes who came and said where's our
inheritance and Joshua said go up and
get it Go claim it I want to be like
Caleb who came and said give me this
mountain 85 years old give me this
mountain and they said go get it and he
went and claimed his
inheritance through Jesus Christ we
enter the
land dying to self
through Jesus Christ we conquer the
enemy through Jesus Christ we claim The
Inheritance and experience that fullness of
of
life that brings glory to his name now
where are you
today what is your spiritual address
Egypt then you'd better come and give
your heart to Christ Egypt is the place
of judgment the Wilderness then you
better cross over Jordan quit murmuring
quit complaining don't have self-will
just die to self and come into the land
and enjoy the Blessed Victory and the
Blessed inheritance in
Christ gracious
father our hearts are filled overflowing
oh we have so much we live so
little forgive us we pray that today
there will be great victories in hearts
as people by faith
yield and cross over into the land of
inheritance and help that there will be
those who will flee from Egypt this day
and Trust the blood of the Lamb to save
them we pray in jesus' name and for his
