welcome back to the Garden of English
yes that's awesome I'm Tim frus it's a
well-established fact that reading
poetry can be hard and if reading it is
hard then writing about it can be too
but I've been providing you with tips
and tricks in my past poetry videos that
will help you both read any poem that
you could ever see and write about that
same poem and all of this works
especially well on your apit exam if you
haven't seen my prior videos in this
poetry series I'm going to encourage you
to watch those before you watch this
video just do it doing so will allow
this video to make significantly more
sense all of these videos in the series
are linked in the description right
below this video and right down there
you can also find the like button the
Subscribe button the super thanks button
and even links to goe merch where you
can grab some T-shirts sweatshirts
stickers and more in our last video we
wrote topic sentences in response to the
O amandus poetry prompt this may seem
backwards but trust me it's not with
poetry it's actually way easier to write
topic sentences for a poetry essay
before writing a thesis statement when
you write a thesis for just about any
lit prompt you can use the template
screen now you may notice that there are
essentially three moves in that thesis
template the first move prompts you to
directly include poetic elements the
second move asks you to include textual
understandings based on those elements
and the third move requires you to
include a universal
Insight but before we apply this
template to the Oz amandus prompt you
need to know that this is just a
template you can mold the template to
meet all of your needs and preferences
for example you may have a teacher that
doesn't want you listing poetic elements
in your thesis statements that's okay or
you may not like to include them
yourself so you would want to adjust the
template to take that section of it out
you'll have to reward things a little
bit though or sometimes like in the case
with the Oz and mandus prompt that we're
responding to which remember is linked
conveniently in the description below
this video you might have a prompt where
you'll be asked to comment on how the
poem answers something thematic instead
of something directly related to the
speaker of the poem or the conflict in
the poem or the speaker's attitude when
this happens you would have to adjust
the template by taking out the middle
textual understanding section and that's
what we're going to do here if you want
to know more about adjusting the thesis
template and seeing how it can work for
every lit paper you could ever write
especially on exam day you want to check
out the video that looks like this and
of course is linked in the description
anyway since our particular prompt asks
us to analyze how Shel we uses literary
elements and techniques to explore the
complex relationship between power pride
and the passing of time we are are going
to fill the literary and poetic element
section of the template and the
universal Insight section of the
template making adjustments as needed to
fill in the first part of my thesis I'm
going to put my title author and genre
in there and I'm going to include my
literary elements from my first three
topic sentences that I already wrote for
this poem remember I went over how to do
this in my last video but I'm going to
have those topic sentences pop up right
memory since my fourth topic sentence is
listic in nature and will actually work
as the first sentence of my poetry
conclusion I don't need to include any
of the literary elements from that
sentence in my thesis statement that
won't be necessary anyway the beginning
of my thesis would read like this in the
Sona oam Indus Percy Bish shell develops
a frame narrative contrasts The Works of
a tyrant and an artist and highlights a
boastful yet presently unsupported claim
you may notice how I substituted the
word develops for presenting when I
included my first poetic element in my
thesis template this is what I mean when
I say that you can make the template
work for your needs and how you write I
chose to change the verb because I
didn't want to sound too redundant when
I used the verb presenting in the first
topic sentence you'll also notice that I
changed my wording a little bit with my
literary and poetic elements you don't
have to do this but I like to so I don't
sound too repetitive synonyms are your
friends now because the prompt for this
poem requires me to make an observation
about the relationship between Universal
ideas I'm going to cut out the in order
to section of the thesis and tag on the
ending universe IAL Insight so now my
whole thesis would read like this in the
Sona oam Indus Percy Bish Shelly
develops a frame narrative contrast the
works of a tyrant and an artist and
highlights a boastful yet presently
unsupported claim ultimately
illustrating that though kingdoms may
fall at the hands of time the
communicative power of an artist
creative talents will not and if you are
the type of person who doesn't like to
include literary or poetic elements in
your thesis statement your thesis
statement would probably look something
like this in the Sona aamus perc belli
illustrates that though kingdoms may
fall at the hands of time the
communicative power of an artist
creative talents will not notice that I
ditch the in order to and the ultimately
and change the illustrating to
illustrates I had to do this so that all
of my thesis would make sense folks you
have the freedom to mold these templates
to fit your writing needs and style you
also have the freedom to choose to watch
the video that's about to pop up on your
screen so you can learn about
integrating quotations in your poetry essay
