0:01 welcome back to the Garden of English
0:04 yes that's awesome I'm Tim frus it's a
0:06 well-established fact that reading
0:08 poetry can be hard and if reading it is
0:10 hard then writing about it can be too
0:12 but I've been providing you with tips
0:14 and tricks in my past poetry videos that
0:16 will help you both read any poem that
0:17 you could ever see and write about that
0:19 same poem and all of this works
0:21 especially well on your apit exam if you
0:23 haven't seen my prior videos in this
0:25 poetry series I'm going to encourage you
0:26 to watch those before you watch this
0:29 video just do it doing so will allow
0:31 this video to make significantly more
0:33 sense all of these videos in the series
0:34 are linked in the description right
0:35 below this video and right down there
0:37 you can also find the like button the
0:39 Subscribe button the super thanks button
0:41 and even links to goe merch where you
0:43 can grab some T-shirts sweatshirts
0:45 stickers and more in our last video we
0:47 wrote topic sentences in response to the
0:49 O amandus poetry prompt this may seem
0:52 backwards but trust me it's not with
0:54 poetry it's actually way easier to write
0:56 topic sentences for a poetry essay
0:58 before writing a thesis statement when
0:59 you write a thesis for just about any
1:01 lit prompt you can use the template
1:07 screen now you may notice that there are
1:09 essentially three moves in that thesis
1:11 template the first move prompts you to
1:13 directly include poetic elements the
1:16 second move asks you to include textual
1:18 understandings based on those elements
1:19 and the third move requires you to
1:21 include a universal
1:23 Insight but before we apply this
1:25 template to the Oz amandus prompt you
1:27 need to know that this is just a
1:29 template you can mold the template to
1:31 meet all of your needs and preferences
1:33 for example you may have a teacher that
1:35 doesn't want you listing poetic elements
1:37 in your thesis statements that's okay or
1:38 you may not like to include them
1:40 yourself so you would want to adjust the
1:42 template to take that section of it out
1:43 you'll have to reward things a little
1:45 bit though or sometimes like in the case
1:47 with the Oz and mandus prompt that we're
1:49 responding to which remember is linked
1:51 conveniently in the description below
1:52 this video you might have a prompt where
1:53 you'll be asked to comment on how the
1:55 poem answers something thematic instead
1:57 of something directly related to the
1:59 speaker of the poem or the conflict in
2:01 the poem or the speaker's attitude when
2:02 this happens you would have to adjust
2:04 the template by taking out the middle
2:06 textual understanding section and that's
2:08 what we're going to do here if you want
2:09 to know more about adjusting the thesis
2:11 template and seeing how it can work for
2:13 every lit paper you could ever write
2:16 especially on exam day you want to check
2:18 out the video that looks like this and
2:19 of course is linked in the description
2:22 anyway since our particular prompt asks
2:24 us to analyze how Shel we uses literary
2:25 elements and techniques to explore the
2:28 complex relationship between power pride
2:30 and the passing of time we are are going
2:32 to fill the literary and poetic element
2:33 section of the template and the
2:34 universal Insight section of the
2:36 template making adjustments as needed to
2:38 fill in the first part of my thesis I'm
2:40 going to put my title author and genre
2:42 in there and I'm going to include my
2:44 literary elements from my first three
2:45 topic sentences that I already wrote for
2:47 this poem remember I went over how to do
2:49 this in my last video but I'm going to
2:51 have those topic sentences pop up right
2:59 memory since my fourth topic sentence is
3:01 listic in nature and will actually work
3:03 as the first sentence of my poetry
3:04 conclusion I don't need to include any
3:06 of the literary elements from that
3:07 sentence in my thesis statement that
3:09 won't be necessary anyway the beginning
3:11 of my thesis would read like this in the
3:14 Sona oam Indus Percy Bish shell develops
3:16 a frame narrative contrasts The Works of
3:18 a tyrant and an artist and highlights a
3:21 boastful yet presently unsupported claim
3:23 you may notice how I substituted the
3:25 word develops for presenting when I
3:27 included my first poetic element in my
3:28 thesis template this is what I mean when
3:30 I say that you can make the template
3:33 work for your needs and how you write I
3:34 chose to change the verb because I
3:36 didn't want to sound too redundant when
3:38 I used the verb presenting in the first
3:40 topic sentence you'll also notice that I
3:42 changed my wording a little bit with my
3:44 literary and poetic elements you don't
3:46 have to do this but I like to so I don't
3:48 sound too repetitive synonyms are your
3:51 friends now because the prompt for this
3:52 poem requires me to make an observation
3:54 about the relationship between Universal
3:56 ideas I'm going to cut out the in order
3:58 to section of the thesis and tag on the
4:01 ending universe IAL Insight so now my
4:03 whole thesis would read like this in the
4:05 Sona oam Indus Percy Bish Shelly
4:07 develops a frame narrative contrast the
4:09 works of a tyrant and an artist and
4:11 highlights a boastful yet presently
4:12 unsupported claim ultimately
4:14 illustrating that though kingdoms may
4:16 fall at the hands of time the
4:17 communicative power of an artist
4:20 creative talents will not and if you are
4:22 the type of person who doesn't like to
4:24 include literary or poetic elements in
4:25 your thesis statement your thesis
4:27 statement would probably look something
4:30 like this in the Sona aamus perc belli
4:31 illustrates that though kingdoms may
4:33 fall at the hands of time the
4:35 communicative power of an artist
4:37 creative talents will not notice that I
4:40 ditch the in order to and the ultimately
4:41 and change the illustrating to
4:44 illustrates I had to do this so that all
4:46 of my thesis would make sense folks you
4:48 have the freedom to mold these templates
4:51 to fit your writing needs and style you
4:53 also have the freedom to choose to watch
4:55 the video that's about to pop up on your
4:56 screen so you can learn about
4:58 integrating quotations in your poetry essay
