0:02 so you want to get a pet snake or lizard
0:04 but your parents won't allow it how do
0:06 you change their minds today we're going
0:07 to talk about how to convince your
0:19 reptile before we start this video won't
0:21 or can't guarantee that you will be able
0:24 to get a pet reptile some parents are
0:25 just more strict than others the rule
0:27 for me was I had to move out of my
0:29 parents house before I could get my
0:31 first snake and sometimes that's just
0:33 the rule that's how it is I mean their
0:34 roof their rules or their house their
0:36 rules though they've probably told you
0:38 before however this video can increase
0:41 your chances of convincing them to let
0:43 you get a reptile so we have five tips
0:45 to share with you today first things
0:46 first though I'll have a few helpers
0:48 throughout today's video this is
0:52 Holidazzle she is a snow hypo corn snake
0:55 beautiful little girl tip number one is
0:57 to do a ton of research on the animal
0:59 that you would like to get figure out
1:01 its adult size its enclosure setup its
1:04 lifespan its diet behavioral traits
1:06 everything you can you might discover
1:08 during your research that that animal
1:10 that you previously wanted might not
1:11 actually be a good fit for you and
1:13 that's what research is for a lot of
1:15 parents simply don't want their kids to
1:17 have a pet reptile because they don't
1:18 think they know how to take care of it
1:20 properly or they might get bored of it
1:22 eventually this means that the animal is
1:24 either going to suffer or all the
1:26 responsibilities of its care will then
1:29 fall on the parents shoulders and they
1:30 want to avoid that in the first place so
1:32 they just say no from the very beginning
1:34 so first things first do a lot of
1:36 research on the animal you'd like to get
1:39 for instance this is vixon vixon is a
1:42 clown banana morphball python he's
1:43 gorgeous he was surrendered into our
1:45 rescue and he's going to be a breeder
1:49 someday tip number two is to share cute
1:51 videos of the animal that you'd like to
1:53 get with your parents this shows that
1:55 you are actively trying to learn about
1:57 that animal and it shows your parents
1:59 that snakes aren't a weird pet to have a
2:02 lot of other people keep them too and I
2:03 don't mean people who are like big and
2:05 Brant covered in tattoos which a lot of
2:07 parents think reptile keepers are
2:09 they're a normal pet for normal people
2:11 to keep and showing them or sharing with
2:14 them some cute videos of those reptiles
2:16 is a good way to teach them that this by
2:18 the way is actually I don't have a name
2:20 for her yet this is one of our holdback
2:22 lavender condom morph hognoses the
2:25 lavender color is my favorite morph of
2:27 hogn no by far they're so pretty tip
2:30 number three is to print off cute
2:32 pictures of the animal you'd like to get
2:34 cut them out and leave them around the
2:35 house as long as you won't get in
2:37 trouble for doing so this will help
2:39 desensitize your parents to the thought
2:41 of there being a reptile in the house by
2:44 Simply Having pictures lying around yeah
2:45 this one works better for snakes than it
2:47 does lizards because people are
2:49 generally afraid of snakes for some
2:50 reason MH it's a good way to get parents
2:54 over their fear this is Tutti Frutti our
2:57 I think 27 year-old variable King Snake
2:59 old girl she's very very old she's been
3:00 retired for for a long time and I'm
3:02 surprised she's made it this far but
3:05 she's still going strong our next tip is
3:07 probably the most effective one but it's
3:10 also the most intimidating or makes you
3:12 do the most work tip number four is to
3:14 create an educational presentation on
3:17 the animal you'd like to get to share
3:19 with your parents because this is so
3:21 helpful to convincing parents to let you
3:23 get a pet reptile we're going to spend a
3:25 little bit more time on tip number four
3:27 and I'd like to share with you the
3:29 things that I highly recommend including
3:32 in said presentation if you can make it
3:33 using Microsoft PowerPoint you know make
3:35 it look professional it'll make even
3:38 more of an impact not to say that you
3:39 can't just do it with you know markers
3:41 and paper and make your own physical
3:43 actual slides but if you have access to
3:45 a computer and you know how PowerPoint
3:47 works I highly recommend making a
3:49 PowerPoint presentation about the animal
3:51 that you'd like to get you might
3:53 actually want to get a pencil and paper
3:55 ready for this next part to take a
3:57 couple notes and you can even pause the
3:59 video here but until you're ready but if
4:02 you're your presentation should include
4:04 seven very important things that I think
4:07 are essential to share with your parents
4:09 first you should include maybe start
4:11 with one to two fun facts about the
4:12 animal you'd like to get maybe where it
4:15 lives in the wild maybe its natural diet
4:17 maybe defense mechanisms of it just
4:20 start introducing your parents to the
4:22 Animal by sharing a couple fun facts
4:25 this by the way is aom our male Mexican
4:27 black king snake we've had him for quite
4:29 a while as well and he is now a father
4:32 father next explain why that animal
4:34 makes a good pet for example ball
4:36 pythons don't make any noise and they're
4:38 very good at handling a couple reasons
4:40 why they make really good pet reptiles
4:42 or pets in general bearded dragons have
4:44 huge personalities and they're really
4:46 easy to feed when they're adults and
4:48 eating primarily vegetables that you
4:49 have in your fridge anyway this is
4:51 especially effective if you compare them
4:53 to an animal that doesn't make a good
4:56 pet for example a tiger tigers probably
4:58 shed a lot make a lot of noise they
5:00 probably destroy your house while
5:02 pythons don't destroy your house or make
5:04 noise and when they shed it's all in one
5:05 piece so a little bit of compare and
5:07 contrast with an animal that doesn't
5:10 make a good pet adds some humor and is
5:12 actually pretty helpful too next break
5:13 down everything that the animal you want
5:16 will need for a proper setup and add up
5:17 the cost of everything as well this
5:20 includes the substrate the habitat the
5:23 decor the food special lighting like UVB
5:25 if it's an animal that needs it and
5:27 don't be surprised if the total is like
5:30 $300 to $700 the initial setup for a
5:32 reptile isn't going to be cheap and it's
5:33 important for you to know how much it's
5:36 going to cost this by the way is a
5:38 lavender albino ball python he does not
5:40 have a name yet but we're raising him up
5:43 he's a beautiful boy too your
5:45 presentation should also include how
5:47 much it'll cost monthly in order to take
5:49 care of the animal that you'd like to
5:52 get snakes are pretty easy they eat say
5:55 a $2 Mouse a week so $8 to $10 a month
5:58 to feed a pet snake depending on what it
6:00 is and maybe a $15 bag of substrate once
6:03 a month in order to do a deep clean plus
6:05 electricity on top of it for another
6:07 example bearded dragons will eat a ton
6:09 of feeder insects when they're babies
6:10 and when they're growing but when
6:12 they're adults their maintenance or
6:14 their diet is pretty affordable very
6:16 cheap because they eat primarily greens
6:18 that again are probably in your fridge
6:20 anyway however bearded dragons do need
6:22 their UVB bulb to be changed every 8 to
6:24 12 months depending on the brand UVB
6:28 bulbs are about 20 to $30 depending on
6:31 brand and size so take that into account
6:33 as well and there are obviously other
6:35 expenses too you'll just have to do your
6:36 own research for the animal that you'd
6:38 like to get those are just a couple
6:41 examples since money is usually a pretty
6:42 strong factor in a parent decision to
6:44 let you get a pet reptile once you kind
6:46 of talk about how much the reptile you'd
6:49 like is going to cost and maintain
6:51 explain how you're going to raise money
6:53 to help cover those costs you're
6:55 probably going to have to cover at least
6:57 part of the cost if not all of it
6:59 depending on your parents so are are you
7:01 going to do extra chores to raise money
7:03 are you going to save birthday and
7:05 Christmas gift money in order to raise
7:07 up for the animal you'd like are you
7:08 going to do a lemonade stand or if
7:10 you're old enough are you going to get a
7:12 part-time job to save money in order to
7:14 raise up enough for a pet reptile really
7:16 have that in mind and have a good plan
7:18 in place in your presentation another
7:19 thing you should have already planned
7:21 out for your presentation is what your
7:23 care schedule is going to look like when
7:25 are you going to feed or what days of
7:27 the week are you going to feed that
7:29 animal what days are you going to clean
7:31 the house habitat if you have sports
7:33 that you have to balance along with
7:36 reptile care how are you going to
7:37 balance that throughout the week this is
7:38 something that your parents are
7:40 definitely going to be asking about is
7:42 how you can handle your schedule with
7:44 their needed care because you're
7:46 essentially asking to add a family
7:48 member to your household and that animal
7:51 is going to rely completely on your care
7:53 in order for it to survive and thrive so
7:55 make sure that your parents know that
7:57 you already have a care schedule planned
7:58 and the last thing we recommend having
8:01 in your present for your parents is to
8:03 explain how long the animal is going to
8:05 live and therefore what's going to
8:07 happen in the future are you asking to
8:09 get a baby reptile that's going to live
8:11 like 20 years if so what are you going
8:13 to do when you go to college who's going
8:15 to take care of the animal at that point
8:16 what are you going to do when you go on
8:19 vacation and you're gone for a week do
8:21 you have a plan in place for a friend or
8:22 a family member to come in and take care
8:24 of the animal while you're gone
8:26 basically try to think of the future not
8:28 just the now if you're not sure how
8:30 you're going to take care of an animal
8:33 for 20 years maybe ask if you can adopt
8:35 an older reptile that doesn't have as
8:38 much of a lifespan left I hate to say it
8:40 but therefore isn't quite as long of a
8:41 time commitment this is also great
8:43 because you get to adopt a rescued
8:45 reptile yeah we have a lot of elderly
8:48 Beed dragons and snakes that only have
8:51 three to five more years in them so they
8:54 need yeah exactly that covers the
8:55 presentation and what you should include
8:59 in it so before we move on this is bacon
9:02 ice bacon I bacon she is a double hit
9:04 snow so she's hit albino and xanthic and
9:06 she is one of my favorite hog nooses
9:09 that we have just a doublehead normal looking
9:10 looking
9:13 hog at the end of your presentation be
9:15 ready to answer some questions your
9:17 parents will probably still have some
9:19 concerns about the reptile that you'd
9:21 like to get so be open to talking about
9:23 it and try to predict what their
9:25 concerns are going to be beforehand so
9:27 that you can already have Solutions
9:30 prepared for example do you parents just
9:32 not want Frozen rodents in the freezer
9:34 it's understandable right if that's the
9:36 case maybe your solution is to raise
9:38 additional funds to pay for a mini
9:41 freezer just for the rodents also be
9:42 ready to compromise maybe your parents
9:45 won't allow a pet snake in the house for
9:47 various reasons but maybe they would
9:50 allow a pet lizard so sometimes you have
9:52 to compromise again it's their house
9:55 their rules but be willing to talk and
9:56 be open about it during this
9:58 conversation it's very important to be
10:00 resp effectful to your parents your
10:03 parents might still really not want a
10:05 pet reptile and if you say I want a
10:07 reptile that's probably not going to
10:09 help you out in this case they also
10:11 might not be ready to make a decision
10:13 right away so make sure you give them
10:14 time to think about it after your
10:16 presentation and maybe you can even
10:18 offer some sort of a deal to prove that
10:20 you're serious about getting a reptile
10:22 and you're responsible enough to do it
10:24 for example maybe you'll pick up extra
10:27 chores for a couple of months and in
10:29 exchange if you can do it for so long
10:31 maybe then they'll reconsider a pet
10:33 reptile feeding the dog or cat like if
10:35 you feed the dog and cat for 3 months
10:37 you can show you're responsible enough
10:40 to take care of a reptile exactly maybe
10:42 you could barter with getting straight
10:44 A's in school and if you can get
10:45 straight A's maybe then you can get a
10:47 pet reptile create some sort of
10:50 incentive for yourself that will also
10:51 prove to your parents that you are
10:54 serious and you are responsible this by
10:57 the way is a very squiggly Pelin milk
11:00 snake her name is Ruby she also me yeah
11:02 just a second ago that must be where her
11:04 kids get it after yeah apparently all
11:07 right that covers tip number four which
11:09 is the presentation which I know was a
11:12 big one but again it is so effective so
11:14 I highly recommend creating that
11:16 presentation and including the points
11:18 that we just described to you but tip
11:21 number five which is our fifth and final
11:23 tip in today's video for how to convince
11:24 your parents to let you get a pet
11:26 reptile is to ask your parents to bring
11:28 you to a reptile expo don't expect to
11:30 get a rep reptile at the show Just Go
11:33 For Education go to show your parents
11:35 that normal people keep reptiles too and
11:38 let them kind of learn what animals are
11:40 available in the pet trade the colors
11:42 they come in the prices that they
11:44 typically run maybe they'll fall in love
11:46 with a reptile at the Expo but don't
11:48 count on it just plan on going for them
11:51 to learn more about reptiles this also
11:53 goes with going to the zoo and things
11:55 along those nature if your family is
11:58 afraid of snakes or reptiles get them
12:00 over their fear by by introducing them
12:03 to these animals absolutely makes a huge
12:06 difference even if you try all of the
12:08 tips in today's video except the fact
12:10 that you still might not be allowed to
12:12 get a pet reptile and rules are rules
12:14 it's your parents their house their
12:16 rules learn to accept that if you can't
12:18 get a reptile until say you move out
12:21 like was my case it just gives you extra
12:23 time to do research on that reptile
12:25 until you can move out and get one of
12:26 your own but in the meantime you can
12:28 still get your reptile fixed in various
12:31 ways you can go to reptile Expos you
12:33 could go to a reptile store you could
12:35 have a reptile themed birthday party
12:36 there's lots of traveling reptile shows
12:38 out there yes that would be a great way
12:40 to get a reptile fixed or you could even
12:43 volunteer at a zoo that has reptiles if
12:44 you're old enough to do so that again
12:47 will show responsibility to your parents
12:49 and might help you out in the long run
12:50 plus it'll give you a reptile fix you
12:53 can also join herpetological societies
12:55 and learn about the reptiles through
12:57 people who have tons and tons of years
12:58 of experience with reptiles that's a
13:00 great IDE I didn't even think of the
13:02 herpetological society and finally we'd
13:04 like to share with you three things that
13:06 you should not do to try to convince
13:07 your parents to let you get a pet
13:09 reptile I guess one is don't get on the
13:11 ground and go I want it I want it I want
13:13 it and just throw big tantrum that's
13:15 never going to get it no don't beg don't
13:17 be rude to your parents don't complain
13:20 that's not going to help at all also
13:22 don't release a colony of mice in your
13:24 house and then suggest that maybe we
13:25 should get a pet snake to help with pest
13:27 control but that helped with us like
13:29 that's how we got our first snake is it
13:31 yeah that's how I got you to get a snake
13:34 that what this is the first time I'm
13:36 hearing of that also don't do what Ed
13:39 did and just go out and buy a snake
13:40 sneak it in your bedroom and wait until
13:44 your mom finds out I mean it worked
13:46 don't do it kids don't do that it worked
13:49 for Ed but don't do that anyway I hope
13:51 today's video comes in handy and helps
13:53 you try to convince your parents to get
13:56 a snake or a lizard or some new pet
13:58 these tips can be applied for other
14:00 types of pets too not just reptiles if
14:03 but reptiles are the coolest ones so
14:04 want anything else OB right that's why
14:06 this video is about convincing to get
14:07 reptiles because they're the coolest
14:09 choice if any of these tips work for you
14:11 or if you have additional tips that
14:12 you'd like to share that we missed
14:15 comment below we'd love to see more
14:16 recommendations from you and we'd love
14:18 to see if maybe this video helped
14:20 convince your parents that would be so
14:21 cool if this video helped with that we
14:24 have heard a lot of people fans come up
14:27 to us and say I did a presentation and
14:29 I'm here at a reptile expo getting my
14:31 first reptile because of that again
14:34 presentations work so so well so create
14:35 a presentation to show you know your
14:37 stuff and that you are going to be
14:39 responsible that is your best bet at
14:40 convincing your parents to let you get
14:42 one thank you again everybody thank you
14:44 patreon backers for your amazing support
14:47 as always this is ybra previously known
14:49 as Umbra until she decided to start
14:52 eating her babies yeah and she's a
14:54 sweetheart we love her just as long as
14:56 you're not her babies she's a sweetheart
14:58 yeah anyway thank you again and we'll
15:00 see you next time good luck convincing
15:03 your parents woo [Music]
