so you want to get a pet snake or lizard
but your parents won't allow it how do
you change their minds today we're going
to talk about how to convince your
reptile before we start this video won't
or can't guarantee that you will be able
to get a pet reptile some parents are
just more strict than others the rule
for me was I had to move out of my
parents house before I could get my
first snake and sometimes that's just
the rule that's how it is I mean their
roof their rules or their house their
rules though they've probably told you
before however this video can increase
your chances of convincing them to let
you get a reptile so we have five tips
to share with you today first things
first though I'll have a few helpers
throughout today's video this is
Holidazzle she is a snow hypo corn snake
beautiful little girl tip number one is
to do a ton of research on the animal
that you would like to get figure out
its adult size its enclosure setup its
lifespan its diet behavioral traits
everything you can you might discover
during your research that that animal
that you previously wanted might not
actually be a good fit for you and
that's what research is for a lot of
parents simply don't want their kids to
have a pet reptile because they don't
think they know how to take care of it
properly or they might get bored of it
eventually this means that the animal is
either going to suffer or all the
responsibilities of its care will then
fall on the parents shoulders and they
want to avoid that in the first place so
they just say no from the very beginning
so first things first do a lot of
research on the animal you'd like to get
for instance this is vixon vixon is a
clown banana morphball python he's
gorgeous he was surrendered into our
rescue and he's going to be a breeder
someday tip number two is to share cute
videos of the animal that you'd like to
get with your parents this shows that
you are actively trying to learn about
that animal and it shows your parents
that snakes aren't a weird pet to have a
lot of other people keep them too and I
don't mean people who are like big and
Brant covered in tattoos which a lot of
parents think reptile keepers are
they're a normal pet for normal people
to keep and showing them or sharing with
them some cute videos of those reptiles
is a good way to teach them that this by
the way is actually I don't have a name
for her yet this is one of our holdback
lavender condom morph hognoses the
lavender color is my favorite morph of
hogn no by far they're so pretty tip
number three is to print off cute
pictures of the animal you'd like to get
cut them out and leave them around the
house as long as you won't get in
trouble for doing so this will help
desensitize your parents to the thought
of there being a reptile in the house by
Simply Having pictures lying around yeah
this one works better for snakes than it
does lizards because people are
generally afraid of snakes for some
reason MH it's a good way to get parents
over their fear this is Tutti Frutti our
I think 27 year-old variable King Snake
old girl she's very very old she's been
retired for for a long time and I'm
surprised she's made it this far but
she's still going strong our next tip is
probably the most effective one but it's
also the most intimidating or makes you
do the most work tip number four is to
create an educational presentation on
the animal you'd like to get to share
with your parents because this is so
helpful to convincing parents to let you
get a pet reptile we're going to spend a
little bit more time on tip number four
and I'd like to share with you the
things that I highly recommend including
in said presentation if you can make it
using Microsoft PowerPoint you know make
it look professional it'll make even
more of an impact not to say that you
can't just do it with you know markers
and paper and make your own physical
actual slides but if you have access to
a computer and you know how PowerPoint
works I highly recommend making a
PowerPoint presentation about the animal
that you'd like to get you might
actually want to get a pencil and paper
ready for this next part to take a
couple notes and you can even pause the
video here but until you're ready but if
you're your presentation should include
seven very important things that I think
are essential to share with your parents
first you should include maybe start
with one to two fun facts about the
animal you'd like to get maybe where it
lives in the wild maybe its natural diet
maybe defense mechanisms of it just
start introducing your parents to the
Animal by sharing a couple fun facts
this by the way is aom our male Mexican
black king snake we've had him for quite
a while as well and he is now a father
father next explain why that animal
makes a good pet for example ball
pythons don't make any noise and they're
very good at handling a couple reasons
why they make really good pet reptiles
or pets in general bearded dragons have
huge personalities and they're really
easy to feed when they're adults and
eating primarily vegetables that you
have in your fridge anyway this is
especially effective if you compare them
to an animal that doesn't make a good
pet for example a tiger tigers probably
shed a lot make a lot of noise they
probably destroy your house while
pythons don't destroy your house or make
noise and when they shed it's all in one
piece so a little bit of compare and
contrast with an animal that doesn't
make a good pet adds some humor and is
actually pretty helpful too next break
down everything that the animal you want
will need for a proper setup and add up
the cost of everything as well this
includes the substrate the habitat the
decor the food special lighting like UVB
if it's an animal that needs it and
don't be surprised if the total is like
$300 to $700 the initial setup for a
reptile isn't going to be cheap and it's
important for you to know how much it's
going to cost this by the way is a
lavender albino ball python he does not
have a name yet but we're raising him up
he's a beautiful boy too your
presentation should also include how
much it'll cost monthly in order to take
care of the animal that you'd like to
get snakes are pretty easy they eat say
a $2 Mouse a week so $8 to $10 a month
to feed a pet snake depending on what it
is and maybe a $15 bag of substrate once
a month in order to do a deep clean plus
electricity on top of it for another
example bearded dragons will eat a ton
of feeder insects when they're babies
and when they're growing but when
they're adults their maintenance or
their diet is pretty affordable very
cheap because they eat primarily greens
that again are probably in your fridge
anyway however bearded dragons do need
their UVB bulb to be changed every 8 to
12 months depending on the brand UVB
bulbs are about 20 to $30 depending on
brand and size so take that into account
as well and there are obviously other
expenses too you'll just have to do your
own research for the animal that you'd
like to get those are just a couple
examples since money is usually a pretty
strong factor in a parent decision to
let you get a pet reptile once you kind
of talk about how much the reptile you'd
like is going to cost and maintain
explain how you're going to raise money
to help cover those costs you're
probably going to have to cover at least
part of the cost if not all of it
depending on your parents so are are you
going to do extra chores to raise money
are you going to save birthday and
Christmas gift money in order to raise
up for the animal you'd like are you
going to do a lemonade stand or if
you're old enough are you going to get a
part-time job to save money in order to
raise up enough for a pet reptile really
have that in mind and have a good plan
in place in your presentation another
thing you should have already planned
out for your presentation is what your
care schedule is going to look like when
are you going to feed or what days of
the week are you going to feed that
animal what days are you going to clean
the house habitat if you have sports
that you have to balance along with
reptile care how are you going to
balance that throughout the week this is
something that your parents are
definitely going to be asking about is
how you can handle your schedule with
their needed care because you're
essentially asking to add a family
member to your household and that animal
is going to rely completely on your care
in order for it to survive and thrive so
make sure that your parents know that
you already have a care schedule planned
and the last thing we recommend having
in your present for your parents is to
explain how long the animal is going to
live and therefore what's going to
happen in the future are you asking to
get a baby reptile that's going to live
like 20 years if so what are you going
to do when you go to college who's going
to take care of the animal at that point
what are you going to do when you go on
vacation and you're gone for a week do
you have a plan in place for a friend or
a family member to come in and take care
of the animal while you're gone
basically try to think of the future not
just the now if you're not sure how
you're going to take care of an animal
for 20 years maybe ask if you can adopt
an older reptile that doesn't have as
much of a lifespan left I hate to say it
but therefore isn't quite as long of a
time commitment this is also great
because you get to adopt a rescued
reptile yeah we have a lot of elderly
Beed dragons and snakes that only have
three to five more years in them so they
need yeah exactly that covers the
presentation and what you should include
in it so before we move on this is bacon
ice bacon I bacon she is a double hit
snow so she's hit albino and xanthic and
she is one of my favorite hog nooses
that we have just a doublehead normal looking
looking
hog at the end of your presentation be
ready to answer some questions your
parents will probably still have some
concerns about the reptile that you'd
like to get so be open to talking about
it and try to predict what their
concerns are going to be beforehand so
that you can already have Solutions
prepared for example do you parents just
not want Frozen rodents in the freezer
it's understandable right if that's the
case maybe your solution is to raise
additional funds to pay for a mini
freezer just for the rodents also be
ready to compromise maybe your parents
won't allow a pet snake in the house for
various reasons but maybe they would
allow a pet lizard so sometimes you have
to compromise again it's their house
their rules but be willing to talk and
be open about it during this
conversation it's very important to be
resp effectful to your parents your
parents might still really not want a
pet reptile and if you say I want a
reptile that's probably not going to
help you out in this case they also
might not be ready to make a decision
right away so make sure you give them
time to think about it after your
presentation and maybe you can even
offer some sort of a deal to prove that
you're serious about getting a reptile
and you're responsible enough to do it
for example maybe you'll pick up extra
chores for a couple of months and in
exchange if you can do it for so long
maybe then they'll reconsider a pet
reptile feeding the dog or cat like if
you feed the dog and cat for 3 months
you can show you're responsible enough
to take care of a reptile exactly maybe
you could barter with getting straight
A's in school and if you can get
straight A's maybe then you can get a
pet reptile create some sort of
incentive for yourself that will also
prove to your parents that you are
serious and you are responsible this by
the way is a very squiggly Pelin milk
snake her name is Ruby she also me yeah
just a second ago that must be where her
kids get it after yeah apparently all
right that covers tip number four which
is the presentation which I know was a
big one but again it is so effective so
I highly recommend creating that
presentation and including the points
that we just described to you but tip
number five which is our fifth and final
tip in today's video for how to convince
your parents to let you get a pet
reptile is to ask your parents to bring
you to a reptile expo don't expect to
get a rep reptile at the show Just Go
For Education go to show your parents
that normal people keep reptiles too and
let them kind of learn what animals are
available in the pet trade the colors
they come in the prices that they
typically run maybe they'll fall in love
with a reptile at the Expo but don't
count on it just plan on going for them
to learn more about reptiles this also
goes with going to the zoo and things
along those nature if your family is
afraid of snakes or reptiles get them
over their fear by by introducing them
to these animals absolutely makes a huge
difference even if you try all of the
tips in today's video except the fact
that you still might not be allowed to
get a pet reptile and rules are rules
it's your parents their house their
rules learn to accept that if you can't
get a reptile until say you move out
like was my case it just gives you extra
time to do research on that reptile
until you can move out and get one of
your own but in the meantime you can
still get your reptile fixed in various
ways you can go to reptile Expos you
could go to a reptile store you could
have a reptile themed birthday party
there's lots of traveling reptile shows
out there yes that would be a great way
to get a reptile fixed or you could even
volunteer at a zoo that has reptiles if
you're old enough to do so that again
will show responsibility to your parents
and might help you out in the long run
plus it'll give you a reptile fix you
can also join herpetological societies
and learn about the reptiles through
people who have tons and tons of years
of experience with reptiles that's a
great IDE I didn't even think of the
herpetological society and finally we'd
like to share with you three things that
you should not do to try to convince
your parents to let you get a pet
reptile I guess one is don't get on the
ground and go I want it I want it I want
it and just throw big tantrum that's
never going to get it no don't beg don't
be rude to your parents don't complain
that's not going to help at all also
don't release a colony of mice in your
house and then suggest that maybe we
should get a pet snake to help with pest
control but that helped with us like
that's how we got our first snake is it
yeah that's how I got you to get a snake
that what this is the first time I'm
hearing of that also don't do what Ed
did and just go out and buy a snake
sneak it in your bedroom and wait until
your mom finds out I mean it worked
don't do it kids don't do that it worked
for Ed but don't do that anyway I hope
today's video comes in handy and helps
you try to convince your parents to get
a snake or a lizard or some new pet
these tips can be applied for other
types of pets too not just reptiles if
but reptiles are the coolest ones so
want anything else OB right that's why
this video is about convincing to get
reptiles because they're the coolest
choice if any of these tips work for you
or if you have additional tips that
you'd like to share that we missed
comment below we'd love to see more
recommendations from you and we'd love
to see if maybe this video helped
convince your parents that would be so
cool if this video helped with that we
have heard a lot of people fans come up
to us and say I did a presentation and
I'm here at a reptile expo getting my
first reptile because of that again
presentations work so so well so create
a presentation to show you know your
stuff and that you are going to be
responsible that is your best bet at
convincing your parents to let you get
one thank you again everybody thank you
patreon backers for your amazing support

see you next time good luck convincing
your parents woo [Music]
