Have you ever wondered why you don't see
You see, there's a common notion that
Audi's are well boring.
And that's partly because they're not
really loud or aggressive when it comes
to their design.
They don't really have that look at me,
I'm a German mercenary kind of wbe, you
know? They are more subtle, understated,
And here in Dubai, subtlety is not
really what people are looking for in
But the thing is, Audis have always been
ahead of the curve when it comes to
tech. Take the Quattro system for
example. When it debuted back in the
early 1980s, it revolutionized Rally.
And to this day, the Quattro name is
synonymous with the Audi brand. Now,
what I have today is the Audi Q6 Ron.
Now, with this all electric SUV, Audi is
trying to recreate history, but this
time in the EV era. So, let's take a
look at why this car might just be their
most important step forward yet.
You see, the Q6 Ron is Audi's first mass
market electric car to be built on a
brand new platform. So, models up until
now, like the Ron GT and the Ron SUV,
were all based on either an existing IC
platform or they were niche Halo cars.
So this new platform will serve as a
base for Audi's upcoming electric cars
as well as brands under the Volkswagen's
umbrella like the Porsche Macan V for
example. Now if you're wondering why is
this all important? Well, take a look at
the rivals. The Q6 Ron goes up against
the likes of the BMW EX or the EX3, the
Mercedes EQE SUV as well as the Teslas.
Those are some heavyweights in the
industry. So Audi really had to step up
their game and the results are pretty
impressive. Thanks to the new platform,
Audi was able to improve the range,
which is now at a claimed 625 km on a
single charge, which is not bad. And
thanks to the new 800vt architecture,
the charging times have also improved.
Audi claims that the Q6 Ron can be
charged from 10 to 80% by using an DC
fast charger in less than 30 minutes.
So, on paper, the Q6 Ron looks
promising. And the tech is right up
there as well. But being an EV, it has
to look the part, doesn't it? And the Q6
Ron does that very well without being
too loud about it.
See, for as long as I can remember, Audi
has always played it safe when it comes
to the design. They've always had that
simple and elegant design language that
screams that they're mature and sorted.
And even as they're sliding into the
electric era, they've stuck to it. So,
right from the first glance, the Q6 Ron looks
looks
If you take a closer look, you'll notice
that after what, like a decade, Audi's
finally redesigned a little bit. The
first thing to talk about are the split
headlamp setup. Up top you have these
slim LEDs which are customizable so you
can change it depending on how distinct
a face you want to give the car. Below
it you have these headlamps which are
Audi's latest LED matrix headlamps. And
at the center you have a reimagined
sealed off single frame grill and below
it you have the sensors for the driver's
assist. And surrounded by it are air
flaps that deploy when the car is active
to let the air flow in. Well, with this
being an EV, you obviously have storage
underneath the bonnet, which if you open
up, you can find
up to 64 lit of storage space, which
will most probably be used for storing
From the sides, the Q6 looks confident
without being bulky. You have the
classic AV proportions, which are a long
wheelbase and short overhangs. Over
here, you have aerero optimized wing
mirrors with integrated turn signals,
and at the bottom, you have 20-in alloy
wheels. Now, one thing that I noticed
here is that they don't really have an
aeroop optimized design, which kind of
throws out a wibe if you ask me. Moving
back, you have the Ron badging on the
bottom, and you have a motorized
charging flap over here, as well as on
the other side. And then at the back,
the tech does all the talking. These are
digital OLED tail lamps that can also be
customized. They also communicate with
the cars at the back by warning them if
there are hazards up ahead. That's Audi
in a nutshell, isn't it? Not being too
loud and just quietly flexing what they
can do with their technology. But of
course, the big difference that you find
on modern EVs is not about just the way
it looks on the outside. It's also about
It is in here that Audi's brought the
Third on the list is the biggest thing
in here. That's this large display setup
that's contoured to the driver. This
curved display setup consists of an 11.9
in instrument cluster and a 14 1/2 in
infotainment system. And if that's not
enough, you also get a 10 and a half in
display for the passenger as well. What
do these displays do? Well, starting off
on the left, you have the instrument
cluster or the virtual cockpit. Here you
get information like the speed, your
range, your battery percent, and you can
adjust your recuperation levels as well.
On the right side of the instrument
cluster, you also have information about
the radio station, your navigation
information, and you can also call the
latest contacts from here. Moving over
to the center, you have the main
instrument cluster. This is basically
your control center. You can control
pretty much everything about the vehicle
from here, which obviously includes
connected car tech, your ambient
lighting settings, the temperature
control, and everything else in between.
And then over on the right side, you
have something that I feel like is more
like an afterthought because it's a
display where you can basically just do
the basic elements of it such as
controlling the radio station and your
navigation information. That's it. So,
Audi might improve it in the future with
an overthe-air update, but as of now, it
In terms of look and feel, the common
trend that you see on EVs is that they
skimp down the materials in order to
keep the weight down. But thankfully,
Audi has not gone that direction. The
cabin of the Q6 feels very premium, and
that's thanks mainly to leather being
used at all the major touch points of
the car. You also have a large strip of
ambient lighting that runs above the
heads-up display and across the width of
the dashboard. The ambient lighting can
be customized up to six colors. They
also change according to the driving
modes. Moving over to the seats, Audi
has given a range of options to choose
from, ranging from Nappa leather all the
way to vegan leather. You also have four
different colors to choose from for the
seats. And taking the comfort factor up
a notch, you also get lumbar support for
the driver's seat as well as under thigh
support. However, features like massage
seats have been given a miss which at
this price point is kind of a miss in my
opinion. And then you have the steering
wheel which is almost an octagonal shape
which is finished in leather. Here you
have touch sensitive controls where you
can control your media settings. You can
answer phone calls and you can also
toggle the menu of the instrument
cluster as well. Moving over to the back
you have paddle shifters which in an EV
control the region. And then moving
further back, you have the wiper
controls. And below it, you have a lever
that's quite conventional. It controls
the driver assistance system. Now, this
kind of feels like it's out of place
because it's an electric car. And in
this day and age, most brands have moved
the settings over to the steering wheel.
When it comes to practicality, you get
two cup holders up front, which can
easily hold a 500 ml bottle.
You get two USB type-C ports up front,
as well as what used to be called a
cigarette lighter back in the good old days.
days. And
And
this is quite unusual. You also get an
ashtray here, which I think is a nod
back again to the good old days. Up top,
you also get this large panoramic
sunroof, which can be controlled from up
here. Now, let's hop over to the back
side and see how they fare. The seats at
the back feel a bit more harder when
compared to the front seats, making it
feel a little less comfortable. When it
comes to the leg room, with driver seat
adjusted to my driving position, me
being just under 6 foot, I have just
enough leg room. However, I do feel a
bit cramped at the back. But thankfully,
I have plenty of headroom, which is a
good thing. When it comes to
practicality, I have a large door cubby
on the in the on the sides, which can
easily hold a 500 ml bottle.
I also have storage behind the seats and
two AC vents in the center with the
controls for it at the bottom. I also
get heated seats at the back. Taking the
comfort factor up a notch, I also get
armrests that fold down from the middle.
In terms of safety features, you get two
ISOIX anchors on either seats. And
another feature worth noting are the
presence of curtains for the windows,
which in heat is quite commendable. Now,
let's move over to the rear and see how
the boot space fares. Now, when you move
over to the rear, you'll find a feature
that was first introduced back in 2010
Now, Audi claims that the Q6 Ron can
hold up to 526 L of luggage in the boot,
which is 20 lit more than the XM SUV and
about 6 L more than the EQE SUV. You can
also extend it up to 1,529 L by folding
down the rear seats. So, if you're
looking for an SUV that's practical
enough to go for a weekend trip or even
an airport run, well, this is pretty good.
on the road. The Q6 Ron feels just like
a proper electric car,
which by this point we already know that
it is, thanks to the new platform that
is, but above it all, it still feels
just like how an Audi should. And by
that, I mean that the Quattro system
makes more sense now in an EV than it
ever did in my opinion. You see, the Q6
Ron is not really a light car because it
carries a very heavy battery pack
underneath it. But the powertrain,
thanks to the quattro system, does not
make you feel that it is that heavy,
which is quite commendable.
That powertrain coupled with the instant torque
torque
just propels you from one corner to the
other. Speaking of the torque, let's get
into the power figures. The Q6 Ron is
powered by a dual motor setup that
produces 382 horsepower and about 600 Nm
of torque. See those stock figures are
very evident, especially on the highways
when you want to make those quick
overtakes. But another place where it is
that evident is in straight line
performance. Let me demonstrate. What
I'm going to do now is switch the
driving mode to dynamic, which turns off
the traction control on its own, and
then let's launch the car. So, how you
do that is by holding down the brake
pedal as well as the accelerator, and
then the dash says ready, and then you
That quick. It's just that quick. So,
after doing that test a couple of times,
we've concluded that on average, the
Q60R can do 0 to 100 in about 6 seconds.
In terms of how you feel behind the
wheel, the first thing I want to talk
about is that noise that's coming out of
the motors. I'm not sure you can pick it
up, but it feels like a spaceship. Feels
very futuristic. Now, couple that with
the fastoving trees in the background,
and I feel like I'm in the Back to the
Future movie. Now, the next thing I want
to talk about is the tech that comes
with the car. So, you get all the basic
features like adaptive cruise control,
the distance control, and of course, a
speed limiter, which are all great and
quite useful. You also get lane
departure warning, lane keep assist, and
everything that almost feels like
standard with premium cars of this
category. In terms of range, the company
claims that the Q6 Ron can do up to 625
km on a single charge. But in my
experience, you can expect about 500 km
in the real world, which is sufficient,
but it depends on your lifestyle. So,
we've talked about the good parts. Now,
let's talk about the cons. See that 500
km of real world rains that I said about
does make you feel very anxious at least
to me. For a person like me who travels
up and down Abu Dhabi and Dubai on a
daily basis, I will not be able to go a
day without charging it. But at the same
time, if it's a petrol powered car, I
can easily do 2 days on a full tank. And
the final con that I want to talk about
is the tech. Yes, it is loaded with tech
and it is meant to make drives safer,
but to me it feels very intrusive. Take
the lane keep assist for example. I
can't tell you the number of times I've
missed an exit because the system was
too slow and did not let me change lanes
quickly enough to catch the exit. And if
you live in Dubai or even visit Dubai
once in a while, you would know how much
Now that my time with the Q6ron is
coming to a close, it's time to draw
verdict. But first, let's set the
perspective right. See, if you're
watching this video, then the chances
are you would either want to compare the
Audi to its most obvious rival, the
Tesla, or you just want to know how an
electric Audi feels like. So, let's
address both questions now, shall we?
See, with a starting price of about
330,000 dirhams, the Q6 Ron puts itself
squarely in competition with the Tesla
Model X. Now, when compared to the
Tesla, the Audi is better equipped, more
comfortable, and is clearly a better
looking car as well. But the thing is,
Audi's ecosystem is still not as
well-rounded as Tesla's. In simple
words, it's more like an iOS versus
Android kind of a scenario. But if
making a statement is what matters to
you more, then I think that the Audi
does a better job at it. And when it
comes to how the Audi feels as an
electric car, well, the Q6 Ron looks,
goes, and feels more like a car. and
less like a gadget. And if you've driven
a Tesla, I think you would know what
that statement means. However, when it
comes to buying the car outright, unless
you're committed to going fully electric
right away, I would rather suggest that
you opt to lease it. See, EV tech is
still evolving at this stage. And even
though it is developing at lightning
speed, especially with swappable
batteries in the horizon, it's still a
bit too early. So again, in my opinion,
I would rather suggest that you lease
it, say from the self drive app. That
way, you get to live with the car for a
while and see how it truly fits your
life. And by the end of the contract,
you can maybe either choose to buy it
outright or you can even upgrade it to a
newer model. Who knows, with Chinese
manufacturers coming up with innovative
ideas like range extender technology,
maybe the nextG Audi Q6 Ron might appeal
to a larger demographic of buyers. Well,
that wraps up today's video. Until we
see you next time, this is Philip
