0:01 so this is a study I've never done
0:04 before and I've never heard before out
0:06 of the thousands and thousands of Bible
0:07 studies I've heard I've never heard a
0:09 study where the goal is what my goal is
0:12 today which is what the Bible really
0:16 says about alcohol just a full full
0:18 scope what the Bible really actually
0:20 says about alcohol I think it's an
0:23 important message but I also think that
0:25 it's one of those things where this is
0:27 not taught carefully and accurately by
0:28 most people I've ever heard teach it
0:30 guys I respect godly teachers and then
0:32 comes to this topic and all of a sudden
0:34 they want to give you their version of
0:36 things instead of just giving you the
0:38 text and so my goal is to just give you
0:39 the text like I just want to know what
0:44 the Bible actually says so heading into
0:46 this I want you to know this this is not
0:48 to change your convictions if you if you
0:50 have convictions about your own drinking
0:52 so you don't drink or something this is
0:54 not to change that in fact I don't drink
0:56 the goal here isn't to change that the
0:58 goal is to ask this what does the Bible
1:00 say about alcohol that's simply the
1:03 question because pastors skew this stuff
1:06 regularly and it can be hard as a
1:08 teacher it can be hard to even tell when
1:10 you're forcing your traditions on to the
1:13 text because it's always been that way
1:14 in your little circle and in your group
1:17 and you were raised this way and so I've
1:18 heard pastors say well the Bible says
1:20 this but let me give you my reasons why
1:22 I think you should have a different set
1:24 of rules like I've literally heard this
1:25 sort of study especially this week as I
1:27 was preparing but there's another
1:29 problem as well it's just people abused
1:31 alcohol and so it's almost like you got
1:34 these two two polarized versions of the
1:35 Bible in when you hear people teaching
1:38 either they they try to put a burden on
1:39 believers that doesn't really exist and
1:42 shouldn't be upon them or they casually
1:45 talk about it without worrying about the
1:48 very serious warnings in Scripture on
1:50 the topic and so I wouldn't do the whole
1:52 thing let's just do it all so here's
1:54 what we're gonna do we're gonna try to
1:55 give you a balanced teaching we're gonna
1:57 talk about the positive passages that is
1:58 passages in the Bible that speak
2:01 positively of alcohol so I'm gonna cover
2:03 those in order of just a bunch of
2:04 passages then we're gonna look at the
2:06 negative passages passages in the Bible
2:09 that speak negatively of alcohol then
2:11 we'll look at a couple other like in
2:13 addition to this important point
2:15 like for instance alcohol as medicinal
2:18 use there's two passages in the
2:19 scripture we're gonna look at that
2:20 relate to this which I think are very
2:22 different passages but very interesting
2:24 content that we have in the Bible and
2:26 then finally we'll try to give you a
2:28 little bit of clarity if you're
2:29 wrestling with should I be drinking or
2:31 not hopefully we'll do that and then
2:33 we'll do our Q&A at the end and if
2:36 you're watching online do our Q&A in the
2:40 comment section now before we do
2:41 anything else you have to get this right
2:43 you have to get the lordship of Jesus
2:44 right in your life like if Jesus is not
2:46 Lord of your life and if this is really
2:48 about alcohol and not about Jesus then
2:50 something's wrong with you and like
2:52 nothing I teach you will be used
2:54 properly if you're the abstinence person
2:56 you'll abuse people with your abstinence
2:58 if you are the Liberty person you'll
3:00 abuse your Liberty because Jesus is not
3:02 Lord in this area of your life and
3:04 there's nothing that will fix that but
3:06 that's not the topic of the study
3:08 tonight it's not the lordship of Jesus
3:10 it's just to get clarity on this topics
3:12 but that's got to be first so let's
3:13 let's dig in now to the positive
3:17 passages Deuteronomy 14 Deuteronomy 14
3:20 this is a passage dealing with the
3:22 firstfruits o Israel would plow their
3:24 fields they bring in the firstfruits and
3:25 then they would have a feast to the Lord
3:27 where they and they'd offer their first
3:29 fruits to God and this is what it says
3:32 in Deuteronomy 14 22 I'll read all the
3:34 way through verse 26 it says you shall
3:36 truly tithe all the increase of your
3:39 grain that the field produces year by
3:41 year and you shall eat before the Lord
3:43 your God in the place where he chose he
3:45 chooses to make his name abide the tithe
3:48 of your grain and your new wine and your
3:50 oil of the firstborn of your herds and
3:52 your flocks that you may learn to fear
3:54 the Lord your God always but if the
3:56 journey is too long for you so that you
3:58 were not able to carry the tithe notice
3:59 this was not money tithe this was
4:01 actually physical produce from their
4:05 farms and stuff or if the place where
4:06 the Lord your God chooses to put his
4:08 name is too far from you when the Lord
4:09 your God has blessed you that would be
4:11 Jerusalem they're too far from there
4:13 then you shall exchange it for money
4:16 take the money in your hand and go to
4:17 the place which the Lord your God
4:20 chooses so they trade their tithe n all
4:22 the produce they get cash then they take
4:24 the cash to the place and then what do
4:26 they do with that cash then you shall
4:27 exchange verse 20
4:30 five exchange it excuse me verse 26 and
4:32 you shall spend that money for whatever
4:35 your heart desires for oxen or sheep for
4:38 wine or similar drink for whatever your
4:40 heart desires you shall eat there before
4:42 the Lord your God and you shall rejoice
4:46 you and your household now I've actually
4:48 heard a pastor take this verse and and
4:50 sat there for I don't know how long and
4:51 he basically tried to explain how this
4:55 was not alcoholic wine but the Hebrew is
4:57 pretty conclusive what it says here in
5:02 verse 26 is that it's for wine or
5:04 similar drink and there's no way around
5:06 it this is definitely an alcoholic
5:09 content it's not just grape juice like
5:10 the Hebrews clear wine or similar drink
5:13 this is definitely including a alcoholic
5:15 beverage and there to take it in there
5:17 and he says well oh but it's the first
5:19 fruit so they just pressed the grapes so
5:22 right if you just press the grapes they
5:23 don't have time to ferment
5:25 yes but it's once a year and it's in the
5:28 first part of the year in May April May
5:30 right well the harvest for the wine was
5:32 months before that so this is this is
5:33 yeah its firstfruits but anyway the
5:35 point is this if you've sat under that
5:37 teaching or someone tells you this is
5:39 not alcoholic that's just not true
5:41 and we can't build our theology off
5:43 things that aren't true because we feel
5:45 like it makes people's lives safer we've
5:46 got to deal with what scripture actually
5:48 teaches so they're to spend this money
5:49 on wine or similar drink whatever they
5:52 want and enjoy it unto the Lord this is
5:54 a positive passage right it's not
5:55 specifically about alcohol or wine or
5:57 some but it but it includes that and
6:00 this obviously could could get somebody
6:02 intoxicated but they're not to get
6:04 intoxicated but they are to enjoy with
6:06 that liquid as part of their feast to
6:07 the Lord that's something that they're
6:09 able to do do they have to drink wine no
6:15 but it's an option numbers 15 let's look
6:17 at another another passage another
6:20 positive passage so just to recap
6:22 Deuteronomy 14 is showing us there
6:24 eating it before God there rejoicing
6:27 there loving God in the feast of their
6:30 firstfruits and that would include
6:33 alcoholic beverages at least potentially
6:35 and God was okay with it and numbers 15
6:37 7 it says and as a drink offering you
6:39 shall offer one-third of a hint of wine as
6:40 as
6:42 sweet aroma to the Lord now in the
6:43 Hebrew there's like three different
6:45 words they typically use for alcohol or
6:48 for a wine or new wine one of them is a
6:51 word that means new wine or sweet wine
6:54 and it was like more recently made it
6:56 may be alcoholic or it might just be
6:58 grape juice same word then there's
7:00 another word used for more aged wine and
7:03 that's the word we have here forgive me
7:04 if I mispronounce this but as a yin and
7:06 it and it is a word that means
7:09 definitely a fermented drink this
7:10 passage is definitely a fermented drink
7:12 so it can't be referring to grape juice
7:15 numbers 15 7 this is this is where God
7:18 says you can offer alcohol in this sense
7:20 to him as a sweet offering in the Old
7:22 Testament law right we're not following
7:24 these same rituals we see the fullness
7:26 not just a shadow but we can learn from
7:28 the principles and there's a principle
7:30 here where God allows them to offer wine
7:34 as a sweet aroma to the Lord now if
7:36 you're like me and you and you grew up
7:38 the way I grew up if you feel like like
7:40 especially you know when I was younger
7:42 it was like alcohol is just wrong like
7:44 alcohol sin like maybe maybe maybe I
7:45 haven't found the verse that says it yet
7:46 but I'm sure it's in here it looks like
7:48 it's gotta be in here and that's kind of
7:50 how I started I've literally been
7:52 drugged by the Scriptures away from that
7:54 perspective into a perspective that says
7:56 no this is just my conscience it's not
7:58 some rule I can press upon other
7:59 believers because what does the
8:01 scripture say here God's like you can
8:03 offer this thing to me now did God allow
8:06 them to offer wicked things to him
8:09 no like it has to be a land without spot
8:11 or blemish like he doesn't say you can
8:13 offer disgusting things to me things I
8:15 hate pour your wine out to me because
8:16 that way you won't be drinking it like
8:19 that's not what God's doing this is that
8:22 that's not the biblical idea here he's
8:24 like saying take the best in fact it's a
8:27 sweet aroma to the Lord and so this is a
8:28 positive now there'll be negative
8:30 passages so if you hate alcohol don't
8:31 worry I'm gonna help you out here in a
8:35 minute but but I want to I want to be
8:37 fair I just want to give us what the
8:39 Bible says and let the chips fall where
8:42 they may because God's right about what
8:43 he says in his word and I believe that
8:46 even if it conflicts with my own natural
8:49 inclinations to be sort of opposed to
8:51 these things because that's like I said
8:52 that's kind of where I'm coming from in
8:53 fact I feel like I'm the perfect guy to
8:54 teach about
8:56 liberties of alcohol in the Bible since
8:59 I don't ever take them except nyquil
9:01 every once a while so maybe that makes
9:03 me evil but I have scripture for that
9:08 today I'll share with you later okay so
9:12 Genesis 14 18 this is again that word
9:13 yayan or the word that refers to
9:16 definitely a fermented or beverage with
9:18 alcohol in it it's not firm it's in the
9:20 sense of like like a scotch or vodka or
9:22 something like that it's not as strong
9:26 what do they call those there's a term
9:29 for their more strong drinks strong
9:32 drinks it's not one of those it's it is
9:34 however talking about really truly
9:37 fermented like wine and Genesis 14 18 it
9:39 says that Melchizedek king of Salem
9:41 brought out bread and wine he was the
9:44 priest of God Most High so Melchizedek
9:46 here he is he comes out and you guys
9:48 know the story many of you right this is
9:50 a picture of Jesus in the Old Testament
9:52 and he comes out he brings to Abraham
9:55 bread and wine picturing the Communion
9:57 and the body and blood of Jesus Christ
9:58 his offering for our sins which by the
10:01 way consider the fact that his the great
10:04 picture of Jesus's sacrifice involves
10:07 wine and then he brings it out this is
10:08 definitely a fermented beverage and he
10:09 brings it out to Abraham Abraham
10:11 partakes of it it's considered actually
10:13 a very glorious moment in Scripture and
10:15 it is not tainted by the fact that it
10:17 involved alcohol now didn't involve
10:19 drunkenness no and we'll get there in a minute
10:20 minute
10:21 it didn't no but it did involve alcohol
10:23 so we're just talking about the positive
10:26 passages here for a second Psalm 104 15
10:28 if I've bothered you so far I'm probably
10:30 really gonna bother you now but not
10:32 because I want to but because this is
10:33 what the Bible says
10:37 so I'm 104 so I'm 104 talks about things
10:39 that God has blessed man with you can
10:41 read it starting verse 13 if you like
10:44 but verse 15 it says this listing those
10:46 things it says and wine that makes glad
10:49 of the heart of man oil to make his face
10:51 shine and bread which strengthens his
10:53 heart again this is that word yah and
10:55 this is definitely an alcoholic or
10:57 intoxicating beverage I stayed away from
10:58 a lot of the verses that dealt with what
11:00 might have been fermented or might not
11:02 and just stuck with what we know was
11:07 according to Psalm 104 it clearly indicates
11:08 indicates
11:15 this is an eye-opener for me as I read
11:17 as I read and studied this liked wines
11:20 meant to be a blessing and let me let me
11:21 point out to you it not only says that
11:24 God has given us this as a blessing it
11:28 specifically says wine to make glad the
11:32 heart of man so it mentions not only
11:34 wine but its effects as being a blessing
11:36 because some people say wine is meant to
11:37 be a blessing but if you ever feel its
11:39 effects you're in sin but that's not
11:42 what this text says this text is
11:43 implying and it's kind of odd to think
11:45 that wine supposed to be a blessing but
11:46 you can't ever feel any of its effects
11:50 of any kind I mean that's this it just
11:51 seems counterintuitive doesn't it a
11:55 little bit but follow the hermeneutic
11:57 here as we as we look at this verse okay
12:00 so oil to make his face shine bread to
12:03 strengthen man's heart and wine to make
12:05 a glad man's heart you see how it's that
12:07 it's the thing and that its effect is
12:10 also bless now that is actually that's
12:11 the first effect of alcohol is it just
12:13 lightens your mood it brings you up a
12:14 little but it brings you up a little bit
12:16 as far as a sense of pleasure or joy in
12:19 that sense that's the first effect of
12:20 alcohol and that's actually definitely
12:23 endorsed by God the later effects will
12:26 see later are rebuked so you know what
12:27 you consume a little bit more alcohol
12:28 now you're moving into the sin territory
12:31 but the initial small amounts of alcohol
12:34 moderate drinking in a biblical sense is
12:36 considered a blessing from God now this
12:38 might come as a shock to you as it is to
12:40 me because I haven't drank since I was
12:50 so but I I'm like what that's okay but
12:52 this is what the text says and I just
12:54 want this is why I'm saying let's just
12:55 talk about what the Bible really says
12:57 about alcohol and let's let God shape
12:59 our thinking now your conscience is
13:01 fully allowed to restrict you further
13:03 than this but let's not press that on
13:05 others if it's not based on Scripture
13:07 and it's just based on my conscience
13:09 that's the thing
13:12 all right let's let's keep going I feel
13:14 like there's two groups of people right
13:15 the ones they're gonna love the first
13:16 half of the study and the ones they're
13:18 gonna love the second half we're still
13:20 in the first half so proverbs chapter 3
13:23 verses 7 through 10
13:26 it says do not be wise in your own eyes
13:28 fear the Lord and depart from evil and
13:29 then it talks about the blessing of
13:31 following God in these areas it says it
13:33 will be health to your flesh and
13:35 strength to your bones honor the Lord
13:36 with your possessions and with the
13:38 firstfruits of all your increase so your
13:39 barns will be filled with plenty and
13:43 your vats will overflow with new wine
13:45 now again this this is the word that
13:49 could mean grape juice but it also meant
13:52 probably a lower alcohol percentage wine
13:55 just because it was a newer that's why
13:56 it's also called sweet wine because I
13:58 guess as I was researching these things
13:59 the sugars break down and that increases
14:01 the alcohol content so the sweeter wine
14:04 has less alcohol and but it's still
14:07 there so it's seen as a blessing
14:13 proverbs chapter 9 verses 1 through 6
14:17 talks about wisdom here wisdom it says
14:20 this wisdom has built her house she has
14:21 hewn out her Seven Pillars she
14:23 slaughtered her meat she has mixed her wine
14:24 wine
14:28 she has mixed her wine she has also
14:29 furnished her table she has sent out her
14:31 maiden she cries out from the highest
14:33 places of the city whoever simple let
14:34 him turn in here as for him who lacks
14:36 understanding she says to him come eat
14:39 of my bread and drink of the wine I have
14:41 mixed forsake foolishness and live and
14:44 go in the way of understanding now this
14:47 is this is really symbolism not literal
14:49 wine here this is symbolic but you can't
14:51 use wine symbolically as a blessing and
14:53 good thing if it's actually an evil
14:56 thing so it's symbolically being used as
14:56 a blessing
14:58 speaking of plenty speaking of benefit
15:00 speaking of having more than enough in
15:03 your life that's the idea and something
15:07 we we should be aware of Isaiah 25 verse
15:10 6 it says and in this mountain and
15:12 speaking actually about probably the
15:15 millennial reign it's a future time if
15:17 you read the whole passage Isaiah 25 is
15:18 this and in this mountain the Lord of
15:20 hosts will make for all people a feast
15:23 of choice pieces a feast of wines on the
15:26 Lees of fat things full of marrow of
15:29 well refined wines on the LEAs and and
15:31 that phrase the well refined wines on
15:32 the leaves that's speaking of aged wines
15:34 definitely and
15:37 that includes a noticeable alcohol
15:40 content and that scene is a good thing
15:43 you can't make it symbol if it's
15:44 symbolic you can't use it as good
15:47 symbolism if it's actually bad and then
15:49 you shall be blessed like the snake in
15:50 the garden like you just doesn't work
15:52 you know you can't use that kind of
15:54 symbolism it has to be sums in some
15:56 sense of blessing a good thing this is
15:57 the thing that I've been drug to as I've
16:00 studied this this idea over the years is
16:01 the idea that wine is something alcohols
16:03 something God intended to be used as a
16:06 blessing for mankind I just have seen it
16:08 used as abuse so much that it was hard
16:10 for me to perceive of it that way but
16:12 the Bible is you know the Bible is the
16:14 Bible so let's let it speak Isaiah
16:18 chapter 1 verses 21 and 22 it says how
16:20 the faithful City has become a harlot it
16:22 was full of justice righteousness lodged
16:26 in it but now murderers your silver has
16:28 become dross your wine mixed with water
16:31 so it's considered a bad thing that
16:33 their silver has become like draw straws
16:35 is like that the offscouring the
16:37 impurities in the silver and the wine
16:40 has been mixed down with water now so as
16:42 we like hooray mix it down you know but
16:44 but this is seen as like a sad thing
16:47 Oh your wines been watered down that's
16:49 that's a seen as a I think that's not
16:52 good we can also go to the New Testament
16:54 we can look at John chapter 2 and we
16:56 think of the wedding at Cana Jesus's
16:58 first miracle everybody knows this every
16:59 drunk in the world can tell you what
17:07 Jesus's first miracle was it's like the
17:11 only verse they know in the Bible some
17:12 people say that this was not alcoholic
17:14 now I have looked this stuff up because
17:16 I'm open I'm open either way god I just
17:17 went I want to know your word so I know
17:19 what it really says and they quote some
17:21 of these guys there's these guys that
17:22 these Greek and Roman guys that lived
17:24 around that same time and they said that
17:26 the best wine was wine that heaven had
17:28 lost all of its alcohol through firm and
17:30 tape or through filtering excuse me and
17:32 it hit through processing it would not
17:33 cause people to be intoxicated that was
17:36 the very best wine and then when in the
17:38 wedding at Cana the Toastmasters like
17:39 hey this is the best wine and they
17:42 combined those two ideas but what I was
17:44 able to find online just doing some
17:45 research looking for people that would
17:47 actually give me some ancient history on
17:48 this stuff
17:51 is that the Romans did have a typical
17:52 thing where they would water down to add
17:53 pretty strong wine they water it down
17:55 about two parts to one back then so
17:56 about two parts water to one part wine
17:58 which would make it more like modern-day
18:01 beer in its alcohol consistency and then
18:03 the the Jews the only source I could
18:04 find on this was one source that
18:06 suggested the Jews didn't do this and
18:07 they would consider it like uncouth to
18:10 water down the wine and there of course
18:11 we're in a Jewish environment so I don't
18:14 know if I want to quote the Romans to
18:15 find out what the Jews were doing at
18:17 that time the Jews very much had their
18:18 own culture very much did their own
18:21 thing but let me say this in John 2
18:23 verses 9 to 10 let's look at the the the
18:25 comments of the master of the feast what
18:27 did he say about this says when the
18:28 master of the feast had tasted the water
18:30 that was made wine and did not know
18:32 where it had where it came from but the
18:34 servants who had drawn the water knew
18:36 the master of the feast called the
18:38 bridegroom and he said to him every man
18:40 at the beginning sets out the good wine
18:43 and when the guests have well drunk then
18:46 the inferior you have kept the good wine
18:47 until now
18:51 now these comments actually I'm just I'm
18:52 just doing Bible study here just
18:54 hermeneutics this is obviously not to
18:55 feed my own drinking habits I haven't
18:56 done right because I like pomegranate
18:59 juice is really good grape juice just
19:02 grapes you know I'm down but this is
19:03 just because I want to give us the
19:05 Scriptures here right and the scripture
19:07 here makes it clear that this was
19:10 definitely alcoholic wine that Jesus
19:12 made how do I know this because the guy
19:15 says normally the guy sits out the good
19:18 wine and then after the guests have well
19:20 drunk and the Greek there he means that
19:23 they've became somewhat intoxicated
19:26 that's what that means in the Greek so
19:29 he then compares that wine that Jesus
19:34 made to the wine that could intoxicated
19:35 wine so his version of good wine could
19:37 intoxicate people and he calls but Jesus
19:39 is wine good wine so we know what what
19:41 kind of wine he was talking about it's
19:42 right there in the text you don't need
19:43 to study ancient Greek you don't need to
19:46 study ancient Roman cultures to see just
19:47 read the text
19:50 mm-hmm now I just want to add this some
19:52 people will take this and they'll act
19:53 like it met Jesus is okay with
19:56 drunkenness Jesus sends people to hell
19:57 for drunkenness
19:59 let's get we'll get to that in a second
20:02 okay any use of this text because I've
20:04 seen this many times this text used to
20:05 excuse drunkenness or to have a low
20:08 attitude on the sinfulness of
20:09 drunkenness we'll come to that in a
20:12 minute it just means that Jesus did in
20:14 fact make alcoholic wine for the people
20:18 that were at that event so Matthew 11 19
20:22 Jesus says that he's and he's accused of
20:24 them of being a bad guy because it says
20:26 the Son of man came eating and drinking
20:27 and they say look a glutton and a
20:29 wine-bibber a friend of tax collectors
20:33 and sinners now if Jesus only drank a
20:35 grape juice then you couldn't be accused
20:38 of being a wine-bibber probably so Jesus
20:40 himself would have drunk never once ever
20:43 becoming too tipsy or a little bit over
20:45 the line of what's appropriate never
20:48 ever ever but he would have drunk okay
20:49 so those are those are it to me those
20:51 are like a lot of really important
20:52 positive passages I draw from this the
20:56 conclusion that wine is intended by God
21:00 to be a blessing for man used in
21:03 moderation but now we'll talk about the
21:06 negative passage ISM here's the negative
21:08 passages proverbs 20 verse 1 and there's
21:09 a lot of them we will not cover all of
21:11 them because we don't have much time
21:14 proverbs 20 verse 1 it says wine is a
21:17 mocker strong drink is a brawler and
21:20 whoever's led astray by it is not wise
21:23 you drink you become the mocker you
21:25 become the brawler that's what happens
21:28 III lose my inhibitions I start to say
21:31 dumb things foolish things I criticize I
21:34 ridicule I have no filter for this mouth
21:36 which I desperately need you know I
21:38 become a fighter I'm more likely to get
21:40 into trouble and cause battles and
21:43 fights both physical and just strife
21:45 emotionally and so it says whoever's led
21:47 astray by it is not wise and that's the
21:49 point though it may intended to be a
21:51 blessing it can lead you astray and
21:55 that's the danger I imagine that if you
21:56 love the first part of this study the
21:58 most you probably need the second part
22:00 the most and if you love the second part
22:02 the most you probably need the first
22:04 part first because that's kind of the
22:06 way this balancing act goes with
22:09 understanding alcohol it is something
22:10 that can lead you astray
22:13 if you are being led astray there is no
22:15 excuse this is not wise it's not okay
22:19 proverbs 21 verse 17 it says he who
22:21 loves pleasure will be a poor man he who
22:25 loves wine and oil will not be rich the
22:28 danger here is not just that I can enjoy
22:33 it it's that I love it like are you a
22:35 little too romantic with your glass of
22:38 wine with your with your beer or is it
22:41 like too much to you is it out of its
22:42 proper place
22:44 I mean hey I like you know hamburgers
22:47 are great but am I like I need him
22:49 you know I'm it's not like I have this
22:50 passionate love for burgers and there
22:52 could just be an over commitment of my
22:54 heart into this substance that's
22:56 actually gonna mess me up and that's of
22:58 course a possibility the people I've
23:00 known who can who can handle wine can
23:03 easily not have wine people have known
23:05 who can who can take it easily can set
23:08 it aside easily as well and this person
23:10 probably has an issue with that and it's
23:12 included in oil it's just a lover of
23:14 pleasure I just like pleasure too much I
23:17 want to feel good I want the oil I want
23:18 the finer foods I want the I want the
23:20 alcohol I just want to partake it more
23:23 of this stuff that's a danger proverbs
23:27 23 verse 20 and 21 it says this do not
23:29 mix with wine-bibber x' or with
23:31 gluttonous eaters of meat for the
23:33 drunkard and the glutton will come to
23:35 poverty and drowsiness will clothe the
23:38 man with rags this glutton and the
23:40 drunkard are those who either eat food
23:45 or alcohol to excess to excess now both
23:46 of these things are bad and gluttony is
23:48 wrong and at this point someone's like
23:49 you should teach more about gluttony
23:51 Mike and I really like that's great wait
23:52 for that study how about you pay
23:53 attention to the alcohol for this study
23:55 instead of using gluttony as an excuse
23:57 for your alcoholic nature because I see
23:59 that way too often well let's just
24:00 change the subject and ignore what the
24:02 text says about the thing we're actually
24:02 talking about right now
24:05 so yes gluttony is an issue it's not the
24:07 same thing as wine but it's connected
24:10 for sure not in excess and here the
24:12 statement is this if you know people who
24:15 drink too much and their habitual too
24:17 much drink too much of whatever the
24:19 pleasurable things in life don't even
24:20 hang out with them don't even make them
24:22 part of your friends circle that's
24:24 that's what the proverb is saying here
24:26 don't let this be part of your cluster
24:28 of friends it's not good it doesn't do
24:29 good for you
24:34 proverbs 23 verses 29 through 35 it says
24:37 who has woe who has sorrow who has
24:41 contentions who has complaints who has
24:43 wounds without cause who has redness of
24:46 eyes those who linger long at the wine
24:50 those who go in search of mixed wine do
24:52 not look on the wine when it is red when
24:54 it sparkles in the cup when it swirls
24:57 around smoothly and someone's like I
25:00 need some wine right now and if you're
25:01 just like craving you're just hearing
25:05 that maybe something's wrong oh yeah it
25:06 is very vivid and so what do they have
25:07 they have whoa
25:09 they have sorrow they have contentions
25:11 complaints wounds without cause how'd
25:14 that happen oh no no I just woke up and
25:15 I had an injury I don't know what
25:20 happened redness of eyes that's
25:22 interesting redness of eyes is thrown in
25:23 there if you see these symptoms
25:28 something's wrong with you like if your
25:31 wine causes problems in your life who
25:33 has whoa causes whoa in your life you're
25:35 doing something wrong if it causes
25:36 sorrow in your life instead of bringing
25:39 a sense of joy something's wrong if it
25:41 causes contentions and fights in your
25:43 life with with loved ones and friends
25:44 something's wrong if it causes
25:47 complaints or downsides because of the
25:48 drinking of the alcohol something's
25:49 wrong if it you wounds without cause
25:52 even redness of eyes if you wake up the
25:53 next day and you have something of a
25:55 hangover you did something of a sin the
25:58 night before pretty simple those who
26:00 linger long at the wine notice it's not
26:02 just see if the Bible was just against
26:03 drinking it all together it would just
26:05 say those who drink wine but it says
26:07 those who linger long at the wine that's
26:09 the issue it's too much man it's too
26:12 much so don't look at it and maybe
26:14 that's the advice for you for those who
26:15 linger long at wind those who abuse it
26:17 don't look at it when it's read in the
26:19 cup in sparkles and goes down smoothly
26:21 maybe this is the statement to those who
26:24 say man this is an area for me I stumble
26:25 in the area of drinking then maybe you
26:27 need to not drink at all maybe that's
26:29 the best thing for you do you have woe
26:31 and sorrows and contentions and wounds
26:33 without cause and redness of eyes then
26:35 don't even look at it just stay away
26:37 from it
26:40 maybe that's that's a an advice from the
26:44 scripture to say to the drunkard don't
26:47 even touch the stuff let me keep reading
26:49 because it goes on it says in verse 32
26:51 at last at the last it bites like a
26:53 serpent and stings like a Viper
26:55 your eyes will see strange things and
26:59 your heart will utter perverse things
27:01 that jumps out to me because do you know
27:03 that it's it's so interesting even you
27:05 know secular information about alcohol
27:07 when people have a lot of alcohol they
27:09 say bad things like this is just what
27:11 people do it's not like they go man I
27:13 thought I'm gonna give all my money to
27:15 the poor like this isn't generally what
27:18 they do they their perversities come out
27:21 the inappropriate ungodly things come
27:22 out to selfish things that the wrong
27:25 things come out and so this is this is
27:27 the nature of man the sin nature of man
27:30 having easier access to control you when
27:33 you drink too much so your heart will
27:34 letter perverse things yes you will be
27:36 like one who listen to this who lies
27:38 down in the midst of the sea or like one
27:40 who lies at the top of the mast the mast
27:43 of a boat saying they've struck me but I
27:45 was not hurt they have beaten me but I
27:47 did not feel it when shall I awake that
27:52 I may seek another drink if you wake up
27:55 craving alcohol something's wrong when
27:56 shall I awake that I may seek another
27:58 drink like I wake up and I already want
28:01 it in the morning something something
28:04 something is seriously wrong like this
28:06 is don't put the name of Jesus on this
28:07 and make it try to make it okay like
28:11 something's wrong the description of one
28:13 who's sleeps in the mass now the mast of
28:14 the boats on the top of the boat the
28:15 boats Rocking
28:16 well nothing moves more than this mast
28:18 this thing's just going all over the
28:20 place and I think sleeps in the mast why
28:23 sleeps in the mast my best guess is that
28:25 the guy he sleeps in the masts that's
28:27 his position up there and then when he
28:29 comes back ashore he has the hardest
28:32 time walking on solid ground because
28:34 he's used to the constant roiling of the
28:36 waves and everything and so that's I
28:37 mean there's the drunken person you're
28:39 alright do you have a hard time walking
28:43 you drank too much no I think I'm fine I
28:45 think I'm fine the funny thing about
28:47 alcohol is the more of it you drink the
28:50 less you think it's affecting you
28:52 because it impairs your judgment the
28:54 worst person to know if a drunk person
28:58 is drunk is the drunk person and so the
29:00 advice I think you'll know when you've
29:01 drunk too much is actually really
29:05 terrible advice because the more you
29:07 drink the less you tends to be aware of
29:10 it we need we need better rules in our
29:12 lives then I feel pretty good about it
29:15 good luck living life like that right I
29:16 feel pretty good about it
29:19 so specifically it says do you not feel
29:22 pain they struck me but it did not hurt
29:24 so are you at the point where you drank
29:26 and you're like right like I'm like like
29:28 numb do you think I have more pain
29:29 resistance it's not pain resistance
29:31 you're just pained um like you just
29:33 don't know what's going on they start me
29:35 but it didn't hurt if that's you you
29:36 drank too much I think that that's
29:38 that's a biblical boundary to say yep
29:40 you had too much because your your pain
29:44 resistance resistance that's fun has
29:46 gone up you drink too much are you
29:48 saying sinful things you have drunk too
29:51 much or is your body unable to balance
29:53 and walk properly and normally you've
29:54 drunk too much
29:56 and again if you crave alcohol in the
29:57 morning you've drunk too much that's
29:58 based at least I'm trying to look at the
30:00 scripture for cues as to what is too
30:03 much alcohol because I feel like nobody
30:05 talks about this and I want to know what
30:08 the Bible says about it proverbs 31
30:11 verses 4 through 7 it says it is not for
30:14 Kings o Lemuel it is not for Kings to
30:16 drink wine this is by the way this is
30:17 this is one passage in the scripture
30:19 written by a woman pretty cool
30:22 interesting passage a mother to her son
30:24 and she says it's not for Kings o Lemuel
30:26 is not for Kings to drink wine nor for
30:28 Prince's intoxicating drink lest they
30:30 drink and forget the law and pervert the
30:33 justice of all the afflicted again a
30:35 negative passage about alcohol
30:37 specifically it's like Kings don't drink
30:39 wine and the question is does that mean
30:43 Kings never drink wine I don't think so
30:45 I think specifically it's talking about
30:49 not in the discharge of their duties so
30:51 for a king they're making judgment calls
30:53 on on the entire nation decisions for
30:54 the nation you know should we go to war
30:56 like do you really want to make that
30:58 call after you've been drinking someone
31:00 comes before you and they've been you
31:01 have to like use your discernment to
31:02 figure out who's guilty and who's
31:03 innocent who to protect and who to go out
31:04 out
31:06 and you've been drinking and your
31:07 judgments potentially somewhat impaired
31:09 even a little bit that's not gonna be
31:12 good I I can understand how like as a US
31:14 president should probably never have any
31:15 moment in their life when they're
31:18 drinking while they're president because
31:20 like I would hate it if the president
31:22 had put back like three or four beers
31:24 and then someone asked him if they
31:26 should drop a nuke in response to some
31:28 crazy thing that just happened and he's
31:32 like yeah yeah let's do it like that
31:35 scares me to think that someone would be
31:37 making judgment calls in a moment of
31:40 even just even even appropriate drinking
31:42 it could be a little scary to be
31:43 thinking making those kinds of judgment
31:47 calls so the principle here is that
31:49 there may be certain duties that you're
31:51 doing where it's like don't even you
31:53 know like if a pastors like I'll just
31:55 have a beer right before I go teach I'm
31:57 like you're gonna go handle the Word of
32:02 God and and you're a little bit happy or
32:04 whatever like this does not seem right
32:06 to me this seems like your judgment is
32:08 gonna be a little bit off there's
32:09 another verse that talks about this it's
32:12 Leviticus 10 9 now the context is this
32:15 so here we are Old Testament we have the
32:17 the the Israelites and they have the
32:19 camp where they have the tent where
32:20 there's like the meeting place and all
32:21 this other stuff is going on right they
32:24 have the tabernacle well we have made a
32:25 banana by who these are the sons of
32:28 Aaron how they go in to minister to God
32:30 and burn incense and they drink too much
32:32 or at least drink some but probably were
32:34 intoxicated and they go into the
32:36 presence of God that way and they bring
32:38 burn they burn strange fire is the
32:42 statement God fires them destroys them
32:44 burns them kills them and then he tells
32:48 this to to Aaron it says in Leviticus 10
32:52 9 do not drink wine or intoxicating
32:54 drink you nor your sons with you when
32:55 you go into the tabernacle of meeting
32:57 lest you die it should be a statute
32:59 forever throughout all your generations
33:01 so there are certainly moments in life
33:03 where no no alcohol is acceptable in any
33:05 regard at this point this is too much of
33:06 a holy moment this is too much of an
33:12 Ezekiel 44 21 reinforces this it says no
33:14 priest shall drink wine when he enters
33:16 the inner court
33:18 if you find that your worship is just
33:21 better when you've had a couple that's
33:31 Ephesians five verses 17 and 18 this is
33:32 where we get and you might think in the
33:33 Old Testament there's these pretty
33:35 strong statements about alcohol the
33:36 strongest ones are in the New Testament
33:38 actually are the strongest statements
33:40 about alcohol in the negative sense so
33:42 Ephesians 5:17 through 18 it says
33:44 therefore do not be unwise but
33:45 understand what the will of the Lord is
33:48 and do not be drunk with wine in which
33:50 is dissipation but be filled with the
33:54 spirit now there may be times where no
33:55 one should drink at all because they're
33:58 in a discharge of some important duty
34:02 but there are also simply rules about
34:04 drunkenness and the rule is never ever
34:08 ever ever is it okay to get drunk as a
34:10 Christian that's the general rule of
34:14 thumb if people think Oh drunkenness is
34:15 like when it's habitual but you know
34:17 every once in a while on a Friday nights
34:18 a guy you have a really good time he's
34:21 okay you're in sin that's that this is
34:22 clear the scripture is very clear on
34:24 this you're sinning against God in a
34:26 very serious sin you know in all reality
34:30 in fact I'll put it this way how often
34:31 should I as a Christian be filled with
34:35 the holy spirit yes every Sunday morning
34:37 for two hours nothing all the time I
34:39 should always be filled with the holy
34:41 spirit so how often should I avoid
34:46 drunkenness all the time all the time so
34:48 these things are mutually exclusive like
34:50 drunkenness means you will not be
34:51 controlled by the Holy Spirit you want
34:53 to be filled with the Holy Spirit let me
34:55 put this into simple simple terms when I
34:57 drink too much I hurt my relationship
35:00 with Jesus in a very present and
35:03 immediate way I'm not gonna be filled
35:05 with the spirit when I'm drunk with wine
35:07 that's what scripture says or drawn with
35:10 anything else for that matter it's a sin
35:12 that messes up your walk with God and
35:14 this is a pretty serious thing in my
35:18 opinion people who feel the Liberty to
35:20 drink you have the liberty to drink
35:21 biblically you've got it okay now
35:23 there's other wrist ripple talk more
35:24 about restrictions and things like that
35:27 but but you people who drink you have
35:29 got to be the most strict about drunkenness
35:30 drunkenness
35:32 than anybody else people who don't drink
35:34 you don't have to worry about it I mean
35:35 you know how much in my life how many
35:37 hours of my life I spent worrying about
35:39 where's the line between not enough and
35:42 too much like never because I don't
35:44 drink so didn't even come up but if you
35:46 drink you better be very serious and
35:48 concerned about what is too much versus
35:49 too little because it's a serious
35:50 relational issue of sin between you and God
35:51 God
35:54 that hurts your walk Hosea 4 verse 11 it
35:57 says harlotry wine and new wine enslave
36:01 the heart enslave the heart speaking
36:05 here the biblical point is addiction
36:08 wine new wine this stuff can it can
36:10 cause addiction it can enslave the heart
36:12 and if I see that happening that's a bad
36:14 thing this is like not a good thing
36:17 1st Corinthians 6:12 has this great
36:19 principle that applies very much to this
36:20 topic it says all things are lawful for
36:23 me but all things are not helpful all
36:24 things are lawful for me but I will not
36:26 be brought under the power of any
36:28 meaning if wines bringing you under its
36:30 power if you are enslaving yourself to
36:33 this issue then that's a real problem
36:34 now this is a separate issue which is
36:37 this I've known several people who had
36:40 drinking problems and very rarely would
36:44 they admit it even to themselves all I'm
36:48 gonna say is this you've got to deal
36:50 with it if it's you like you've got it
36:50 you got it
36:52 like I don't need to have an
36:54 intervention you you need to do this for
36:58 yourself like grow up take a look in the
37:00 mirror and deal with it if it's you if
37:02 it's you you just got to look at it
37:03 straight on and deal with it because it
37:05 is it is causing problems don't be
37:08 brought under the power of anything and
37:11 yeah big warning against that and I
37:12 could go on for days about statistics
37:15 about alcoholism and drinking and car
37:18 accidents and you name it but um but the
37:20 scripture is clear that's a big issue
37:23 Habakkuk 2:15 it says and this speaks of
37:25 a different side of the alcohol issue
37:27 it's about using alcohol to manipulate
37:28 others it's really interesting it how it
37:30 cook 215 it says woe to him who gives
37:33 drink to his neighbor pressing him to
37:35 your bottle even to make him drunk that
37:39 you may look on his nakedness or his
37:41 shame you want to watch him do something
37:43 shameful you want to see him get drunk
37:45 he'll do something embarrassing or funny
37:46 that she could make him make into a vine
37:48 video or whatever it is they don't even
37:49 have vine videos anymore sorry that was
37:55 like seven seconds ago they're coming
37:57 into there's a new one coming out vine -
38:05 this is God's judgment woe to them on
38:07 those who use alcohol to manipulate
38:08 other people or cause other people to
38:10 sin or to watch other people's
38:11 inhibitions fall away so that they might
38:14 be entertained or exhilarated by the
38:15 things those people will do now that
38:16 they've been drinking
38:20 God has judgment for those people lots
38:23 daughters did this lost daughters gave
38:25 him alcohol so they could do
38:28 inappropriate things with him David got
38:30 Uriah drunk so that he could get him to
38:33 go back to Bathsheba against his vows so
38:35 that he could cover up his adultery and
38:38 God says woe to you to use this use this
38:40 drink to manipulate someone into sin
38:43 Isaiah 28 verse 7 says but they also
38:45 have erred through wine and through
38:47 intoxicating drink are out of the way
38:49 that that means that the drinking has
38:52 caused their life direction to move away
38:54 from obeying God to disobeying God the
38:56 priest and the Prophet have erred
38:58 through intoxicating drink they are
39:00 swallowed up by wine they're out of the
39:02 way through intoxicating drink they err
39:04 in vision they stumble in judgment
39:06 the errant vision they stumble in
39:07 judgment these are a couple specific
39:12 areas they're airing in some people I've
39:14 met have you met this guy he says I'm
39:16 not like that man I'm better when I
39:21 drink people like me when I drink they
39:24 err in vision they stumble in judgment
39:28 you're not the best person to make this
39:30 judgment call like God's makes it pretty
39:33 clear if you think I'm better when I
39:36 drink and when I get you know a little
39:39 tipsy when I get a little bit drunk
39:42 that's when I'm my best person no you're
39:46 not you're not you're deceived and
39:47 you're insane that's what scripture
39:50 would say Isaiah 5:11 says woe to those
39:52 who rise early in the morning that they
39:53 may follow intoxicating drink who
39:56 continue until night to wine and flames
39:58 them this would be like a
40:02 a shameful thing they get up early and
40:03 they drink like all day this is like
40:05 what what most people think should
40:06 happen at some point when you're in
40:12 college but not god not God God's very
40:13 much opposed to this sort of thing it's
40:15 a shameful thing it's not a college
40:18 liberty thing um so my Wild Oats all
40:20 right you're insane
40:21 like this is pretty simple pretty basic
40:24 stuff Isaiah 5:22 says it even stronger
40:26 it says woe to men mighty at drinking
40:29 wine woe to men valiant for mixing
40:32 intoxicating drink the world likes to
40:34 boast about how much they can handle in
40:37 alcohol if you're a Christian you should
40:41 never know how much booze it takes to
40:44 take you down if you even know how much
40:46 alcohol it takes for you to black out or
40:48 not remember the night before then you
40:51 were in sit and it's like oh I can
40:53 handle that or I can have the drinking
40:55 competitions and things like this this
40:57 sort of thing is wickedness it's evil in
40:58 the eyes of God
41:00 no no disagreement about it whatsoever
41:02 and if you're gonna have the Liberty to
41:04 drink you have to have like some serious
41:06 sin radar when it comes to the issue of
41:08 drinking and not be casual about those issues
41:09 issues
41:11 woe to men mighty of drinking wine are
41:12 you really great you're really powerful
41:13 in your wine drinking you're a great
41:17 fool woe to you a godly person shouldn't
41:19 even know what they're like when they're
41:21 drunk no one should ever know what
41:22 you're like when you're drunk because
41:25 you should never be drunk easy peasy
41:28 so these are severe warnings Galatians
41:31 5:21 let me give you it gets stronger
41:34 God says to us in Galatians 5:21 that a
41:36 list of people who will not go to heaven
41:37 they will not inherit the kingdom of God
41:40 envy murderers murders drunkenness
41:42 revelries and the like of which I tell
41:44 you beforehand just as I also told you
41:46 in time past that those who practice
41:47 such things will not inherit the kingdom
41:51 of God if you practice drunkenness we
41:52 can assume you're not saved like that's
41:54 kind of what it's I mean I'm not sure
41:56 how else to interpret this passage 1st
41:58 corinthians 6:10 says something similar
42:00 it says nor thieves nor covetous nor
42:02 drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners
42:05 will inherit the kingdom of God I cannot
42:07 overstate this warning it applies to all
42:10 of the topics we mentioned it applies to
42:11 thieves it applies to covet
42:13 it applies to revilers extortioners but
42:15 it also applies to drunkenness will not
42:17 inherit the kingdom of God I cannot
42:20 overstate this morning drunkenness is a
42:23 great sin it's kind of like you know you
42:26 have you God invented marital relations
42:28 for the marriage bed but you do this
42:30 outside of that environment and it's a
42:32 great in terrible sin and alcohol seems
42:34 to be very much the same kind of thing
42:35 in its right context in its right way
42:37 it's a blessing it's meant to be there
42:38 to encourage your heart bring joy
42:40 outside of that context it's a great
42:42 wickedness that God's very serious about
42:46 Psalm 75 verse 8 it says for in the hand
42:48 of the Lord there is a cup and the wine
42:50 is red it is fully mixed and He pours it
42:53 out surely it's dregs shall all the
42:55 wicked of the earth drain and drink down
42:57 and we have lots of verses like this in
42:58 the Bible where God uses wine to
43:01 symbolize judgment so wine is like
43:02 getting their just desserts now and now
43:04 what some pastors will do I've heard
43:05 this is they'll take all these bad
43:07 passages but they'll ignore the positive
43:09 ones I mentioned earlier we want to take
43:12 them all get the full teaching of God's
43:14 Word on the topic
43:19 Luke 1:15 this is about John the Baptist
43:21 properly called John the Baptizer
43:23 actually the word Baptist it's actually
43:26 a verb in the Greek he's a Baptizer he's
43:29 not a Baptist like Southern Baptist or
43:31 something like that so it says for he
43:32 will be great in the sight of the Lord
43:34 and he shall drink neither wine nor
43:37 strong drink he will also be filled with
43:38 the Holy Spirit even from his mother's
43:43 womb John did not drink ever in his life
43:46 that was the rule for him Jesus did
43:49 that's an interesting idea isn't it you
43:51 got one person who never drinks wine at
43:54 the command of God and someone else who
43:56 does and there's no sin in it whatsoever
43:58 and this describes some of the church
44:00 doesn't it some of you you don't you
44:02 have a conviction I don't touch this
44:03 stuff I will not touch it good for you
44:05 but don't put that piety on someone else
44:09 as though that's piety for them John
44:11 honoring God didn't drink wine others
44:14 can drink it to the Lord and honor God
44:16 in it and I think that's the balanced
44:18 thing don't make it a rule for everybody
44:23 if it's a rule for you in Titus 2 we
44:24 have recommendations for
44:28 the older men and the older ladies of
44:30 course back then we're talking like you
44:31 know your past like 18
44:34 I can't maybe not 18 but but yeah old
44:35 back then was a little probably
44:39 considered a I'm old compared to them so
44:40 but as for you speak the things which
44:42 are proper for sound doctrine that the
44:45 older men be sober reverent temperate
44:47 sound and faith and love and patience
44:50 the older women likewise that they be
44:52 reverent and behavior not slanderers not
44:53 given to much wine teachers of good
44:55 things of course if wine was we were to
44:57 completely abstain that it would say not
45:00 given or no wine at all basically over
45:02 here says not giving a much wine
45:05 there's instructions given to leaders
45:08 and we have strict instructions given as
45:10 requirements for bishops or elders same
45:13 term there and then deacons in first
45:15 Timothy chapter 3 so in first Timothy
45:17 chapter 3 the bishop or the elder is
45:20 told not given to wine not violent not
45:22 greedy for money gentle not quarrelsome
45:25 not covetous so these are character
45:28 qualities meaning this if you are given
45:31 to wine if wine is an area where you
45:33 compromise in your life on some sort of
45:36 regular basis you are disqualified for
45:37 this position of Christian leadership
45:40 not because everyone else can compromise
45:42 there but because it's not much more
45:43 important that the leaders in the church
45:46 have godly character not just speaking
45:49 skills now first Timothy 3:8 it says
45:51 likewise deacons must be reverent not
45:53 double-tongued and not given to much
45:57 wine not greedy for money not greedy for
45:59 money so they're told to not have these
46:01 qualities and not not given over to this
46:03 sort of thing if there's the old story
46:05 about the pastor who he gets drunk like
46:07 he's disqualified like this is a serious
46:10 issue in the scripture I don't say that
46:12 callously I just say it to get us
46:14 serious I want us to realize a couple
46:17 things for one wine intended bite or
46:20 alcohol intended by God for a blessing
46:23 abused by the sinfulness of mankind and
46:25 the abuse is far more serious than most
46:27 people admit they just think well maybe
46:28 I had a little bit too much to drink
46:31 that was Grievous sin in the sight of
46:34 God that Jesus had to die for it was
46:36 pretty serious so we want to put these
46:38 bookends together and
46:39 have like a full scoped understanding
46:40 let me give you a couple other
46:49 first Timothy 5:23 talks about this
46:51 first Timothy 5:23 this is where Paul
46:53 tells Timothy many of you are thinking
46:56 his passage already he says no longer
46:58 drink only water but use a little wine
46:59 for your stomach's sake and your
47:01 frequent infirmities he's actually
47:03 implying a little used a little wine
47:05 he's implying taking wine and mixing it
47:07 into the water so this is like a mixture
47:10 in order for it to probably kill some of
47:11 the bacteria or something like that
47:14 because Timothy is a true is a guy who
47:16 traveled with Paul and he knows that man
47:17 I'm just gonna guess here that his
47:19 stomach and his issues couldn't handle
47:21 the different water as he went from
47:22 place to place like if you go to New
47:26 Mexico you're you the waters you know
47:29 yep they're coming water it's gonna come
47:31 out water like that's what its gonna happen
47:32 happen
47:34 and so they'll say like in Mexico you
47:36 know you could drink the alcohol down
47:38 there but not the water if you're from
47:44 California yeah well that's what he's
47:47 told so I think this is an essential it
47:49 really is it's just a purification thing
47:50 is being told yeah you know what Timothy
47:52 obviously Timothy's normal policies I
47:54 don't drink wine I don't drink alcohol
47:55 at all that's Tennessee's normal policy
47:58 but because of a medical issue he says
48:00 you know go ahead and have mix in some wine
48:01 wine
48:02 I don't think Tennessee what Timothy was
48:03 ever gonna even probably get buzzed or
48:05 anything off of this that was just for
48:07 him to be medically taken care of but
48:08 there's one of the really intriguing
48:10 passage and I kind of saved this towards
48:11 the end here because I thought it was so
48:13 interesting proverbs 31
48:15 turn back to proverbs 31 we read it
48:16 earlier where it's the king's mother
48:18 saying oh lemme well it's not for kings
48:21 to drink wine you know it's not you'll
48:23 feel lose judgment you'll forget justice
48:27 don't do it but then it goes on so let's
48:31 um let's hear like a proverbs 31
48:33 I'll just read from verse 4 again it's
48:35 not for kings Oh lemme well it's not for
48:37 kings to drink wine or for princes
48:39 intoxicating drink lest they drink and
48:41 forget the law and pervert the justice
48:42 of all the afflicted and then it has
48:44 this really to some very strange
48:48 statement give strong drink to him who
48:50 is perishing and wine to those who are
48:51 bitter of heart
48:53 let him drink and forget his poverty and
48:55 remember his misery no more
48:58 is this just exaggeration and they don't
49:00 really mean it you know gods like I
49:02 don't really mean give drink to people
49:05 that are poor like give jury if you oh
49:07 you're poor have a bottle of vodka or
49:09 something like that like that's but if
49:11 you read the passage carefully that's
49:13 not exactly what it says it says give
49:18 strong drink to who him who is perishing
49:22 pairs they're dying someone's on their
49:27 deathbed isn't that interesting
49:29 now I'm just curious raise your have you
49:31 been at someone's deathbed before
49:34 would you have withheld any medication
49:36 that would make it easier for them I
49:39 wouldn't and that's what they do at the
49:40 end they say we're just trying to make
49:44 them comfortable and at that point the
49:46 family's like you don't need to be
49:48 sober-minded right now buddy like we
49:50 just want to help you through this and I
49:52 think there's a biblical precedence for
49:54 this in Proverbs give strong drink to
49:58 him who is perishing but it also implies
50:00 something else when is it really okay to
50:09 so it's it really is God understands
50:12 he's giving us I think medicinal use of
50:14 not only alcohol but whether I don't was
50:15 morphine or whatever it is you're gonna
50:16 give this person to help them through
50:19 this incredibly bad time incredibly hard
50:21 time there's no u-turn here they're
50:24 dying let's help them out and I think
50:25 there's a biblical precedence I don't
50:27 think I should feel guilt I don't think
50:29 a Christian should feel like oh I'm no
50:30 I've stayed sober my whole life and now
50:32 I'm not going under the influence of
50:34 this it's like no this is I think that
50:36 this is the exception to the rule and
50:38 it's in the text which I think is kind
50:40 of exciting that God gave us such a
50:42 rounded teaching in his word I think
50:45 this is a case for hospice or for making
50:46 them comfortable in those moments now
50:48 obviously this can be misused
50:51 oh my back really hurts so I have to
50:53 drink to feel better or I have to take
50:55 these drugs and but there is such a
50:58 thing as medicinal use or taking even a
51:00 painkiller that you normally would stay
51:02 away from under all conditions because
51:05 of this particular situation easily abused
51:05 abused
51:08 frequently abused just like alcohol but
51:10 I don't want to take away the baby with
51:12 the bathwater there may be I believe
51:14 there is an appropriate time and I think
51:16 that the scripture gives us the the room
51:21 for that in this passage so what are
51:24 some conclusions well let me let me to
51:25 round this all out let me go back to
51:27 Romans 14 which we've been in Romans we
51:28 deserve a little pause to talk about the
51:30 issue of alcohol because it's been
51:32 coming up in the passage so Romans 14 21
51:34 it says it is good neither to eat meat
51:36 nor drink wine nor do anything by which
51:38 your brother stumbles or is offended or
51:41 is made weak this is the the clause
51:44 where you say it least temporarily at
51:46 least in the presence of this brother I
51:47 wouldn't touch the stuff because I don't
51:49 want to hurt her offend them entirely appropriate
51:49 appropriate
51:51 I've told I've taught a lot about that
51:52 recently so I won't get into great
51:54 detail and then if you would turn to
51:56 first Corinthians 10 first Corinthians
52:01 10 one of our last verses for tonight
52:14 this is really a great balanced passage
52:17 for us there's the person who drinks and
52:18 says I drink and I thank the Lord for it
52:20 and someone else who says I would never
52:21 touch the stuff and they really both
52:23 need to be able to respect each other
52:24 appreciate each other try not to change
52:29 each other and and this passage helps so
52:30 first we're the ins 10:30 it says but if
52:33 I partake with thanks why am i evil
52:35 spoken of for the food over which I give
52:38 thanks therefore whether you eat or
52:42 drink or whatever you do do all to the
52:45 glory of God if you can hold this glass
52:47 in your hand and drink it and say I will
52:49 not I will not cross the line with this
52:51 I'll just enjoy it me like Gort you gave
52:53 me this and it's a blessing of thank you
52:55 for it praise You Lord and then two
52:56 houses down there's the other believer
52:58 who's in their living room and they're
53:00 just like drinking their their glass of
53:02 grape juice or whatever milk or or
53:04 whatever Martinelli's and they're having
53:06 their non alcohol and they're going lord
53:08 thank you for this I thank you that I'm
53:09 free from having to be in some bondage
53:11 to something and they just and they both
53:15 are glorifying God and God goes great do
53:16 what you're doing do it all for the
53:19 glory of God but don't speak evil of the
53:19 one who
53:22 drinks purely without compromise as unto
53:24 the Lord and don't look down upon the
53:27 other but then it has this in verse 32
53:29 really interesting it says give no
53:31 offense either to the Jews or to the
53:34 Greeks or to the Church of God give no offense
53:34 offense
53:36 so he's like yeah you could eat anything
53:38 drink anything whatever as unto the Lord
53:40 you know with those biblical boundaries
53:43 in place but then it adds the issue of
53:45 culture he goes ah there's a Jewish
53:46 culture there's a Greek culture and he's
53:48 and Paul knows because he's been in both
53:50 he's done outreach to both I'm over here
53:51 with the Jews I don't do anything that's
53:53 outside their culture if their culture
53:54 sees drinking is wrong what am I gonna
53:57 do I am NOT going to drink because I
53:58 would not want to offend them it's not
53:59 because it's wrong it's because I don't
54:01 want to offend them same thing over here
54:02 I'm not gonna offend the other culture I
54:05 led this teaching to go out and not be a
54:08 teaching for Americans but be a teaching
54:10 for Christians now we have to apply it
54:13 in in our culture and consider where you
54:15 live and the people around you and if
54:17 it's a cultural issue around you respect
54:20 the culture and be wise and honor God
54:23 with it and I think like I started out
54:24 by saying if your heart is all about
54:27 serving Jesus with this stuff then
54:29 you're gonna be fine I think you're
54:31 gonna be fine but if you're if you're
54:32 leaned towards Liberty then you probably
54:34 need to come down a little bit and if
54:35 you lean towards abstinence you probably
54:37 need to relax a little bit at least in
54:44 there's a lot of issues I didn't get
54:47 into tonight about like the ancient wine
54:49 like how percentage proof was it I don't
54:51 think that matters because the issue
54:54 isn't about how much alcohol you drink
54:56 versus how percentage proof it is it's
54:59 really issue really one thing the issue
55:02 is how it's impacting me am i getting
55:03 drunk so whether it's stronger drink
55:07 less strong drink I need to stay sober
55:09 but I'm still able to enjoy its effects
55:12 with God's liberty unto the glory of God
55:14 so there there is there's the the Bible
55:16 study that I've never heard anyone teach
55:19 and I hope it's a blessing to you guys
55:22 because in my opinion I really believe
55:24 that pastors by and large the pastor's
55:27 I've heard the circles I've been in not
55:28 not not our pastor my pastor he's never
55:30 done this but I've heard many pastors do
55:31 this where they literally a my opinion
55:33 abuse the body of Christ trying to
55:34 steal their liberties from them because
55:36 the pastor doesn't trust them with those
55:39 liberties well I don't get to trust you
55:41 with anything I get to teach you God's
55:43 Word I don't want to be the filter who
55:45 protects you from the liberties of God
55:49 like that's not my job so let's uh let's
55:50 take it take it to heart and hopefully
55:54 we can see ourselves responding
55:55 perfectly in these situations because we
55:57 have the balance of Scripture let's pray
56:01 father God we ask for wisdom for us for
56:02 those who hear this message later
56:04 whether it's a tomorrow a week from now
56:06 a month from now a year from now we just
56:07 pray Lord that every one of us has to
56:09 make decisions about whether we should
56:11 drink and and win and all that we just
56:13 pray for great wisdom to be led of your
56:14 spirit to walk in the spirit to be able
56:17 to do so for the glory of God always
56:20 whether we drink or don't we pray Lord
56:22 for unity amongst believers who drink
56:25 and who don't drink for clarity I pray
56:27 that pastors who get in the pulpit and
56:31 out of fully sincere in a sense good
56:32 motives but still they misrepresent the
56:34 scripture when they give fifty reasons
56:37 why no one should drink after casually
56:38 acknowledging that the Bible says you
56:41 can't Lord we just pray that the church
56:45 would grow up on this issue more and it
56:47 would not be a cause for division or for
56:48 hurts or for wounds and that we can
56:51 learn moderation just like the scripture
56:53 tells us in Jesus name Amen [Music]
