0:02 g'day and welcome to re-driven now a few
0:04 weeks ago we featured our most requested
0:06 vehicle which was the mitsubishi pajero
0:08 this week we're featuring our second
0:10 most requested vehicle the nissan navara
0:13 now this the d23 series navara when you
0:14 and even now that they're a few years
0:16 old they get a bit of a mixed reaction
0:18 there's an equal amount of love and hate
0:20 thrown at them so we want to know are
0:22 these actually good or are they a big
0:23 crap what goes wrong with them what do
0:25 they cost to own and operate and most
0:28 importantly should you buy one
0:35 now before we get deep into the navara i
0:36 should mention that when sam and i first
0:39 started this whole re-driven thing we
0:41 weren't expecting the levels of passion
0:43 and emotion that these 4x4 dual cab utes
0:45 can stir up if you go through the
0:47 comments sections of the other 4x4 dual
0:49 cab ute reviews that we've done you'll
0:50 see like battles of words going on all
0:53 over the place so to keep this review as
0:55 objective as possible we've reached out
0:57 to multiple navara owners groups nissan
0:59 technicians mechanics 4x4 specialist
1:01 technicians and mechanics automotive
1:03 journalists and even some 4x4 driving
1:05 instructors so this review is basically
1:07 a culmination of all of their opinions
1:09 and knowledge hopefully that will reduce
1:10 the amount of abuse that i cop in the
1:12 comments anyway look in this video we
1:13 are going to be focusing on the
1:15 australian variants of the navara but
1:17 we're also aware that these are known as
1:19 nissan frontiers and renault alaskans in
1:20 other markets so even though we're going
1:21 to be focusing on the australian
1:23 variants of the navara everything we're
1:25 going over should relate to alaskans
1:27 frontiers and navarros in your local market
1:28 market [Music]
1:29 [Music]
1:31 now this generation of navara was
1:33 launched here in australia in 2015 and
1:35 like most vehicles in this category in
1:38 class it comes in a smorgasbord of
1:40 different varieties and versions and
1:42 updates and even like obviously brands
1:44 and model names it's so complex here's
1:46 me doing a voiceover trying to explain
1:48 it all firstly the navara is also known
1:51 as the frontier and the np300 under the
1:53 nissan brand but as i mentioned a couple
1:55 of other manufacturers have also thrown
1:57 their design language on this platform
1:58 being called the renault alaskan and the
2:01 mercedes-benz x-class this d23
2:03 generation differs from its counterparts
2:05 as it's one of the only vehicles in this
2:08 class featuring a coil sprung rear end
2:09 unless of course you're looking at the
2:11 single or extended cabinet of arrows in
2:13 which case they both have leaf sprung
2:15 rear ends like the majority of other
2:17 utes and pickups on the market engine
2:19 choice consists of single or twin turbo
2:21 diesels and a far less popular petrol
2:23 option with all putting their power
2:25 through six-speed manual or seven-speed
2:26 automatic transmissions here in
2:28 australia the navara lineup consists of
2:30 primarily three different trim levels
2:33 although what those variants include can
2:35 vary depending on update and speaking of
2:37 updates the navara received an update in
2:39 2017 known as the series two and again
2:43 in 2018 and later in 2019 these changes
2:45 were related primarily to its suspension
2:47 tune look we'll cover that later in more
2:49 detail although updates to equipment and
2:52 tech also occurred the navara is also no
2:54 stranger to limited n special editions
2:56 both from the factory and dealerships
2:58 with the most substantial being the more
3:00 hardcore australian developed and
3:02 engineered in trek warrior models plus
3:04 the most substantial equipment and
3:06 visual refresh was bestowed upon the
3:08 navara in 2021. and look obviously we'd
3:09 love to go over all those graphic
3:11 details of every upgrade and every
3:13 variant but that would just take far too
3:15 long the video would go for days but we
3:17 have gathered all that information and
3:18 we put it in our very handy re-driven
3:20 cheat sheets our cheat sheets are
3:22 invaluable as they provide a full
3:24 breakdown of the car's model range its
3:25 common problems what you need to look
3:27 out for before handing over your
3:29 hard-earned cash how much of that cash
3:31 you should be handing over and so much
3:34 more check it out at redriven.com or in
3:36 the link below now guys look if you own
3:38 a navara or you're a navara expert and
3:39 you've noticed that we've missed
3:41 something in this video please let us
3:42 know in the comments like obviously
3:43 we're going to do our best to cover
3:44 everything that we can but we generally
3:46 find it's those that own navaras that
3:48 are the true nevarra expert so yeah if
3:50 we've missed something let us know in
3:54 okay so does it look good look obviously
3:56 it looks so subjective i think it looks
3:58 fine it's fine i actually i personally
4:00 love the look of the enteric warrior
4:02 versions of these but even in kind of
4:03 like standard stx form
4:05 yeah decent looking thing obviously
4:06 fitting some quality aftermarket
4:08 accessories will make these things look
4:09 even tougher
4:11 in saying that but i should mention when
4:12 we spoke to the guys in the 4x4
4:14 accessories world they did mention that
4:16 fitting aftermarket lights to these
4:17 things can be a bit of a prick because
4:20 if the ipdm or the body control module
4:21 picks up even the slightest difference
4:24 in voltage it can blow that unit out so
4:25 just keep that in mind now in terms of
4:27 common issues and problems with the
4:29 exterior that you need to watch out for
4:30 that's coming up shortly [Music]
4:32 [Music]
4:34 okay so how's the interior
4:36 it's fine from a design aspect it's
4:38 arguably one of the more suv style
4:41 interiors of all these 4x4 dual cab utes
4:43 the amarok still wins the award for best
4:45 interior our link to that video is just
4:47 up there but in terms of the navara yeah
4:49 it does the job now i should mention
4:51 like many utes in this class the levels
4:53 and quality of materials used will vary
4:55 depending on year and even trim specs so
4:57 like the early model base versions of
4:59 these have like full vinyl floors and
5:01 the interior can feel a little bit
5:03 utilitarian this being the stx you get a
5:05 leather interior and things just feel a
5:07 bit nicer there's some chrome treatment
5:09 and some nice painted finishes like any
5:11 that's got some hard plastics everywhere
5:13 and they're not scratching too easily in
5:15 terms of general wear and tear after
5:17 many years and thousands of kilometers
5:19 this vehicle is this owner's daily
5:20 driver and it's wearing pretty well like
5:22 the steering wheel is getting a little
5:24 bit glossy but the leather on the seats
5:25 wearing really nicely actually feels
5:27 quite tough but still
5:29 you know soft and supple enough even
5:30 down here like there's a little bit of
5:32 scratching on the chrome around the gear
5:34 selector but the black gloss plastic
5:35 isn't scratching too much all the
5:36 buttons feel
5:38 good to use
5:40 pretty good as i said daily driver and
5:42 it goes camping and off-road pretty much
5:44 every weekend and wear and tear is good
5:46 okay in the back seat i'm exactly the
5:48 same height as bill murray prince harry
5:50 and caitlyn jenner this is in my driving
5:52 position and it's okay like there's a
5:53 decent amount of foot room but the
5:55 problem is because the seat and the
5:57 floor are kind of kind of close my knees
5:59 are like up in the air so on a long trip
6:01 i might lose feeling to both my bum and
6:03 my feet that's no fun also because the
6:05 roof line's a little bit low like it
6:06 just feels like i'm a bit kind of
6:08 slightly claustrophobic as far as wear
6:10 and tear goes look guys it's like a new
6:11 car back here the leather feels
6:13 fantastic all the plastics feel really
6:16 good even the backs of the seats yeah i
6:18 don't think this this rear has been used
6:23 how's the tech well look the tech is
6:25 going to vary depending on year in trim
6:27 spec but to give you an overview here's
6:28 me doing a voice over in terms of
6:30 infotainment tech the various navara
6:32 models will feature touch screens from
6:34 four inches up to 7 inches and all come
6:36 equipped with usb and auxiliary ports in
6:38 this center console and automatic on and
6:40 off headlights with twilight detection
6:42 bluetooth phone and audio streaming were
6:44 included on all grades however apple
6:46 carplay and android auto were not
6:49 introduced until 2019 standard equipment
6:51 on this the stx model includes a
6:53 surround view camera system rear parking
6:55 sensors auto wipers led headlights and a
6:57 six speaker sound system however we've
6:59 read many complaints where the standard
7:01 infotainment systems can be a bit crap
7:03 and glitchy and drop bluetooth out hence
7:05 why this owner has fitted this very
7:07 snazzy looking aftermarket unit this
7:08 almost looks like a factory unit but
7:10 this thing does everything apple carplay
7:12 android auto the lot although when they
7:13 sent this to them they didn't send all
7:15 of the right cables so at the moment
7:17 none of the steering wheel controls work
7:18 and neither did any of the cameras also
7:20 if you'd like to find out exactly which
7:22 navara has what tech just check out the
7:29 so is it practical oh god sorry is it
7:31 practical well yeah to you of course
7:33 it's practical plus this being the stx
7:35 it comes standard with a tray liner and
7:36 nissan's fantastic utility track
7:38 adjustable tie down system
7:40 although the tray liner in the utility
7:42 track system is optional in the lower
7:44 class models but now that we're talking
7:46 about practicality depending on what you
7:47 need a dual cab u to do this is where
7:50 the navara can become potentially
7:51 a bit unravelled
7:53 see when nissan first released this
7:55 series nevarra it felt like the coil
7:57 sprung rear end was set up more for
8:00 on-road driving awesome off-road comfort
8:02 more than actually lugging heavy stuff
8:03 like fine if you're throwing a couple of
8:05 mountain bikes in the back but it kind
8:07 of fell apart if you threw anything
8:08 really heavy back there the problem is
8:10 that the rear end would squat the
8:12 steering would get really light and
8:13 vague and it was just a bit of a
8:15 disaster then the series 2 came along in
8:18 2017 but a lot of people still felt like
8:20 nissan didn't quite nail it but to
8:21 nissan's credit they listened to their
8:23 customers and to automotive journalists
8:24 and they revised it again with this the
8:27 series 3 which pretty much got it right
8:28 although they did revise it again with
8:31 the entry warrior but here's the thing
8:32 the practicality that these things offer
8:34 has more to do with you and your needs
8:36 more than the vehicle itself if you're
8:37 using the tub to load a couple of
8:39 mountain bikes or a bunch of camping
8:41 equipment it'll handle that easily and
8:42 being a coil sprung rear end it's going
8:44 to be quite enjoyable to drive to
8:45 wherever you're going we'll get to
8:47 driving impressions in a second but if
8:49 you're planning on towing anything
8:50 really really heavy or loading loads of
8:52 weight in that rear tray
8:54 yeah we'd probably go with a leaf sprung
8:56 rear end instead in saying that there
8:58 are some awesome aftermarket suspension
9:00 systems available these days so if the
9:02 navara doesn't tick your boxes in
9:03 standard form just kind of go and get
9:05 the suspension modified and it should
9:06 tick your boxes as far as actual
9:08 practicality in the back seat goes
9:09 you've got a couple of map pockets here
9:12 you've got some air vents down here some
9:14 door bins that are an okay size and just
9:16 a spot to collect dust and crap up here
9:18 you can fold this seat up which is quite
9:20 handy it doesn't give you like
9:21 technically extra storage but if you
9:23 want to protect the actual leather on
9:24 the seats you can you know chuck half a
9:26 mountain bike in here and not ruin the
9:28 upholstery and practicality up front
9:30 you've got a spot for your sunglasses up
9:31 there or sunnies as we call them in
9:34 australia an okay size glove box there's
9:35 also a little tray up here with a
9:37 textured surface so you can exfoliate
9:39 those calluses after a hard day on the
9:40 job site also there's a power outlet up
9:42 there as well plus there's another power
9:44 outlet here and an auxiliary input and
9:46 usb point down here and another power
9:48 outlet down here if you're a drug dealer
9:50 it's fantastic because you've got three
9:51 spots for your phone one for the main
9:53 phone here and two spots for your burner
9:56 phones either side two cupholders here
9:58 good sized little bin in here some
10:00 hidden cup holders up here and over
10:02 there and good sized door bins that will
10:04 hold a daniel ricardo water bottle perfect
10:05 perfect
10:07 oh and there's a spot here to keep like
10:09 any excess flesh or flaky skin or
10:11 fingernails also a great feature if you
10:13 have any work makers or colleagues or
10:14 family members that have some extreme
10:16 flatulence issues there's this awesome
10:17 little sliding window at the back to let
10:20 any horrible odors out [Music]
10:22 [Music]
10:23 so what goes wrong with these things
10:24 we're going to get to the mechanical
10:26 stuff in a sec so let's start with the
10:28 exterior first up there are loads of
10:30 reports that the paint is quite thin and
10:32 is really susceptible to scratching the
10:34 drama is with a vehicle that's designed
10:36 to go off-road a fair bit if the paint
10:38 scratches and meets like water or
10:40 anything that can corrode that can turn
10:42 into rust and rust is crap also being
10:44 something that is designed to go
10:45 off-road if you're in the market for one
10:47 of these go over the exterior thoroughly
10:49 look for any accident damage look for
10:51 any discrepancies in the paint look
10:52 obviously some light scratches and a few
10:54 dents are to be expected but if you see
10:56 signs of abuse especially underneath
10:57 make sure you get underneath and have a
10:59 look thoroughly under there any signs of
11:02 abuse just walk away actually in saying
11:03 that if you are in the market for any
11:05 kind of off-roader not just in nevarra
11:07 but really any 4x4 make sure you check
11:09 out our ultimate 4x4 buyers guide video
11:11 the link is just up there it could save
11:13 you thousands of dollars okay problems
11:14 and issues with the interior there are
11:15 loads of reports that with the
11:17 leather-lined models that the leather on
11:18 the driver's side like where you get in
11:20 and out it can crack and peel and on
11:22 this vehicle is doing that there's also
11:24 reports that the armrest can get a
11:26 little bit loose and squeaky this one
11:28 none of those drums whatsoever also
11:29 there are some reports that the electric
11:31 windows can like get stuck or just
11:34 falter not a common problem as such but
11:35 there are a couple of reports of that
11:37 now before we get into any of the
11:38 mechanical drums that these things can
11:40 suffer if you're enjoying this video can
11:41 ask a favor can you hit those like
11:43 subscribe and bell icon buttons and
11:44 maybe give this video a bit of a share
11:46 as well because the more you share this
11:47 the more of these that we can make now
11:49 mechanically what goes wrong with these
11:50 things well guys i'm not a mechanic i'm
11:52 not qualified to tell you that but jim is
11:53 is
11:55 before we get started sorry about the
11:57 slightly dodgy audio it is raining here
11:59 again and i still can't control the
12:01 weather unfortunately when people hear
12:03 nissan navara in some cases they think
12:05 what a terrible piece of but their
12:07 opinion is most likely being swayed by
12:12 the old d40 navara now the d23 navara so far
12:12 far
12:14 seems to be
12:16 way more reliable than its predecessor
12:17 some of the more common problems we see
12:20 in the workshop are oil leaks we see oil
12:22 leaks from the transmission and we see
12:24 oil leaks from the engine the timing
12:25 cover in the engine we see oil leaks
12:29 from the turbo hot pipe here which has a
12:31 proprietary seal there which you can't
12:33 replace without doing the whole pipe we
12:36 also see a lot of rear main oil seals
12:38 now i have heard in some cases that
12:39 under nissan warranty these have been
12:42 replaced three times on the same car so
12:44 just keep an eye out for that on the
12:45 twin turbo models there's an active
12:48 recall to fix a problem where the bottom
12:50 radiator hose actually rubs through
12:53 on the drive belt pulley obviously you
12:54 know causing a coolant leak and
12:56 potentially having a dire catastrophic
12:58 overheating event having said that we
13:01 haven't seen any serious or you know
13:02 catastrophic engine or transmission
13:04 failures yet that haven't been related
13:06 to either lack of servicing or abuse and
13:08 on that lack of servicing nissan
13:11 recommend under normal conditions these
13:13 things should be serviced every 20 000
13:15 k's for a whole bunch of reasons that's
13:17 a bad idea you really should if you want
13:19 it to last keep it serviced more
13:22 regularly every 10 000 k's is way better
13:24 and if you don't want it choking itself
13:26 to death like a 90s rockstar you
13:28 absolutely need to fit a catch can can
13:30 we leave that in there yeah
13:31 too soon
13:34 too soon okay just to address the
13:36 alleged chassis cracking problem which
13:37 we're actually seeing in a lot of dual
13:39 cabs typically it comes from people
13:41 not so much overloading it but loading
13:44 it to its maximum capacity and then when
13:45 you do that and you hit a causeway or a
13:47 creek crossing or something it overloads
13:49 everything and that's when they crack so
13:51 if you're following the normal loading
13:53 guidelines and a bit of common sense it
13:58 is it safe yeah
13:59 yeah
14:00 it's kind of safe but to give you an
14:02 overview here's me rapidly doing a voice
14:04 over ah thanks mate nevarro's come
14:06 fitted with vehicle dynamic control to
14:07 help improve full drive driving
14:09 performance and safety along with active
14:10 brake limited slip heel start assist and
14:11 heel descent control anti-lock brakes
14:13 electronic brake force control traction
14:15 control systems and brake assist while
14:16 also being fitted with seven airbags
14:17 isofix anchor points and a five-star end
14:20 cap safety rating from 2015 but many
14:21 models miss out on smart safety systems
14:22 like autonomous emergency braking
14:24 forward collision warning lane departure
14:25 warning lane keeping assist active
14:27 cruise control blind spot monitoring and
14:28 only the dual cab pickup models get a
14:30 reversing camera fitted as standard
14:31 again for all the details of which
14:33 navara gets what safety gear get on
14:39 okay so what's it like to drive well
14:40 first of all i've got to apologize for
14:42 the audio it's currently pissing down
14:44 with rain so if there's like incessant
14:46 white noise it's not our fault it's
14:49 mother nature now full disclosure i've
14:50 driven loads and loads of nissan
14:52 navara's because i was actually paid by
14:54 nissan to help promote and test the
14:56 entrec warrior the thing is i'm not
14:58 getting paid by this anymore because
15:00 we're doing this for free i don't get
15:02 paid to talk about cars anymore but hey
15:03 at least we get to say whatever the hell
15:05 we want now in terms of this particular
15:07 vehicle it is fitted with an evc i drive
15:09 throttle controller and it is brilliant
15:11 we're not getting paid by ebc this video
15:14 is not sponsored by avc in any way but
15:16 it is absolutely superb actually nissan
15:19 why don't the cars feel this good from
15:21 factory it takes out all the lag even
15:24 mid gear acceleration is so improved
15:26 brilliant little unit now suspension
15:28 ride and handling wise this is a 2018
15:30 series three so it has the third
15:31 iteration of the different suspension
15:34 tunes on the navara and it's pretty good
15:36 like it's not amarok levels of comfort
15:38 and refinement on-road but it does the
15:41 job it's it's it's near kind of range
15:43 levels but it is like far better than
15:45 most of the leaf sprung counterparts
15:47 sounds wise as far as like rattles and
15:49 creeks and road and wind noise
15:51 again pretty good like this is on some
15:53 medium spec all-terrain tyres and
15:55 there's not any kind of excessive tyre
15:57 or road noise on the freeway there
15:58 wasn't any excessive wind noise and as
16:00 far as rattles and creeks go even after
16:03 thousands of kilometers in many years
16:05 it sounds as tight as a drum now like
16:06 the majority of four by four dual cab
16:08 utes excluding the amarok and the triton
16:11 this has part-time full drive so do not
16:13 drive it on a sealed surface in full
16:15 drive mode now these navarros have a
16:17 rear diff lock as standard but i should
16:18 mention that you can only use it in low
16:21 range 4x4 mode and actually mentioning that
16:22 that
16:23 make sure if you're in the market for
16:24 one of this make sure you test
16:26 everything make sure all the diff locks
16:28 work or the low range works 4x4 works
16:30 just test everything actually a man of
16:32 mine bought an older hilux recently
16:35 didn't test any of the 4x4 modes a few
16:36 weeks after he bought it he takes it out
16:38 onto the sand dunes selects four by four
16:40 low range and blows the front tip apart
16:42 the reason being the that sold
16:44 it to him didn't tell him that he'd done
16:46 some dodgy repair work and put different
16:48 ratio dips in the front and back and now
16:50 he's up for an enormous repair bill now
16:51 guys we're not going to get into the
16:53 argument about how the navara competes
16:54 against the competition in terms of
16:57 actual off-roading but it will say this
16:58 when we were testing the entrec warrior
17:01 and all the other prototypes we
17:03 absolutely abused the vehicles like we
17:05 took them through insane levels of
17:07 terrain in all sorts of conditions in
17:09 multiple states around australia and at
17:12 no point did any of them let us down it
17:14 was phenomenal obviously there were a
17:15 few differences with those prototypes in
17:17 the entrec warrior but if you're in the
17:18 market for one of these and you want to
17:20 go off-roading just fit some quality all
17:22 terrains some really nice aftermarket
17:24 suspension look after the underbody
17:25 protection a little bit and look it'll
17:32 okay in terms of the 4x4 dual cab models
17:34 the early base spec ones of these with
17:35 loads of kilometers in pretty shabby
17:36 condition you're going to be looking
17:38 around about twenty thousand dollars at
17:39 the other end of the spectrum like a
17:42 2020 entrec warrior in basically new
17:44 condition around about 70 000
17:47 something like this a 2018 stx with a
17:48 decent amount of case in really good
17:50 condition you're going to be looking
17:52 anywhere between 40 and 50 000 and for
17:54 pricing in some other parts of this
17:57 crazy world of ours here's a graphic [Music]
18:07 nissan claim a fuel consumption figure
18:10 anywhere between 6.3 and 9.9 liters per
18:12 100ks depending on if it's a petrol
18:14 diesel automatic
18:17 manual four-wheel drive rear wheel drive
18:18 a bunch of other factors this particular
18:20 navara is claimed at seven liters per
18:22 100k but on this test we're seeing
18:24 figures of 10.4 nissan initially offered
18:26 a three-year 100 000 kilometer warranty
18:28 on all the virus but that was upgraded
18:30 to five years and unlimited kilometers
18:32 as of march 2019 and servicing is
18:34 recommended at every 12 months or 20 000
18:36 k's and i should mention that when we
18:38 were doing the research for this video
18:40 the navara owners groups are phenomenal
18:41 if you are in the market for one of
18:42 these or you own one of these make sure
18:43 you join an owners group because the
18:45 advice and information they can provide
18:50 so should you buy one
18:52 well look it depends on what you want to
18:54 do with it see if you plan on towing
18:57 really heavy stuff all of the time or
18:59 regularly throw hundreds of kilograms of
19:01 weight in the tray or if you're after an
19:03 uncompromising off-roading beast
19:06 then no you you shouldn't buy a navara
19:08 there are other 4x4 dual cab units that
19:10 just do those things better than the navara
19:11 navara
19:14 but if you're after something more along
19:16 the lines of a lifestyle ute that will
19:17 still tackle the vast majority of
19:19 terrain that most normal humans would
19:21 attempt to explore and you still want
19:23 this vehicle to drive on road with
19:25 composure in decent manners but it needs
19:27 to at least be able to tow a decent
19:28 amount of stuff plus it has to be
19:31 reliable and comfortable then yes you
19:32 should buy a navara and our pick is an
19:35 stx exactly like this one
19:37 but guys let's get something straight no
19:39 4x4 dual cab ute is perfect see when you
19:41 read through the comment sections of the
19:43 other 4x4 dual cab utes that we've
19:45 featured those comments sections are
19:46 filled with arguments like are the
19:48 highlights is the best now the highlight
19:49 says crap get a ranger now the range is
19:51 crap buying america no that amrock's a
19:53 piece of crap make sure you get a try
19:55 another triton get a navara it just
19:58 it never bloody ends see the truth about
20:00 all of these 4x4 dual cab utes is that
20:03 they're all pretty bloody good and
20:05 they're all just a bit crap which one
20:07 you should own comes down to
20:09 you what you want it to do and your
20:11 budget more than anything and in terms
20:13 of the navara even after a few years and
20:15 many thousands of kilometers look it
20:17 isn't brilliant at any one thing it's
20:19 just it's pretty good at everything guys
20:21 thank you so much for watching and hey
