0:01 hi this is aj and welcome back for
0:05 secret number three
0:08 now the last secret the last rule
0:11 was maybe your favorite right no more
0:14 grammar rules
0:15 good news for you but this one
0:18 is probably the most important rule
0:21 this is really
0:22 the central key it's the main one
0:27 and this rule or this secret is this
0:30 learn with your ears
0:33 not with your eyes
0:36 again learn with your ears
0:38 not with your eyes
0:40 of course we're teaching you how to
0:42 speak excellent english speak
0:46 and to speak well you have to have
0:49 excellent listening see speech comes
0:52 from listening
0:55 here's the problem
0:57 in school you mostly learned with your
1:00 eyes
1:01 what did you do you read a lot of
1:04 textbooks
1:06 you watched the teacher write a lot of
1:08 stuff
1:08 on the board
1:12 maybe you listen to the teacher explain
1:14 english in your language
1:17 so you're less you're hearing your
1:18 language not english in your classroom
1:23 but in general what's happening is you
1:25 learning learning learning with your
1:27 eyes that's what happened
1:30 and maybe still happening now i don't
1:31 know hopefully not not after today
1:35 so there's a big problem with this see
1:38 when you're when you're just reading
1:40 and trying to learn grammar rules for
1:43 example by reading grammar books and
1:45 you're trying to learn vocabulary by
1:47 reading vocabulary lists
1:50 and you're trying to read english
1:52 dialogues and then you're doing written
1:56 tests and then you're doing all these
1:57 written activities and written drills
2:00 none of that is helping you with your
2:02 speaking
2:04 and that's why you probably read english
2:08 much better than you speak it
2:10 or understand it
2:12 it's a common problem it's because in
2:15 school you learned with your eyes all
2:17 the time or most of the time
2:19 and you did very little learning with
2:21 your ears listening listening listening
2:25 is
2:26 secret number three and it's probably
2:28 the most important one you gotta listen
2:31 a lot you've gotta listen to a lot a lot
2:34 a lot of english
2:37 that's the key to great speaking there's
2:39 a lot of research about this a lot of
2:42 academic research excellent research
2:44 that shows that listening is the way you
2:47 improve your speaking
2:50 not reading
2:52 not practicing speaking in a mirror or
2:54 something no it's lots and lots and lots
2:57 of listening
2:59 lots of it
3:02 now
3:03 this is so obvious but let's think
3:05 imagine a baby a little baby
3:08 little american baby will say
3:10 this little american baby
3:13 of course needs to learn english
3:15 so how will we teach this american baby
3:18 to learn english
3:20 will we buy grammar books and try to
3:23 make the baby study grammar
3:27 no we won't
3:29 we could try but it won't work would we
3:31 try to force the baby to read
3:34 immediately
3:36 of course not
3:38 so how does this little baby
3:40 learn english
3:43 one way and one way only listening
3:47 for six to 12 months that baby just sits
3:50 there and listens
3:52 listens listens listens listens listens
3:55 to
3:55 the parents mostly and maybe brothers
3:58 and sisters and maybe other people in
4:00 the family
4:01 speaking english constantly
4:04 and of course when parents speak to a
4:06 baby they don't speak difficult english
4:08 they speak very simple easy english
4:12 and eventually the baby starts to learn
4:15 a few words like mommy daddy
4:19 maybe food really simple stuff but they
4:22 start to learn a little bit
4:24 and that's the beginning and then they
4:26 start learning you know groups of words
4:28 two words three words together
4:31 all of this is happening through
4:32 listening
4:35 and for a while the baby can understand
4:37 a lot the small child can actually
4:40 understand a lot of english but cannot
4:43 speak very much this is natural and
4:45 normal
4:46 that the listening level is higher than
4:48 the speaking level
4:51 and then eventually of course the baby
4:52 will start to speak one word and two
4:55 words in the beginning and then phrase
4:57 bigger set phrases and then sentences
5:00 and it just keeps going
5:03 and that baby learns to speak excellent
5:05 english
5:06 through listening by learning with the
5:09 baby's ears
5:12 and that's what you have to do you have
5:13 to go back and start learning english
5:16 now change the way
5:17 you're learning it instead learn it like
5:20 a baby learn with your ears lots and
5:23 lots of listening
5:26 now like a baby
5:29 you should not focus on difficult
5:32 listening this is another problem that
5:34 schools have and a lot of students have
5:37 maybe they do practice some listening
5:39 but when they do it's so difficult
5:42 like they're listening to sample toefl
5:44 tests and things like that extremely
5:46 difficult vocabulary very academic and
5:49 formal not really
5:51 natural normal english for normal
5:53 situations
5:55 and it's so difficult that you cannot
5:57 really understand it easily and
5:59 automatically
6:02 if you do that if you listen to english
6:03 that's too difficult
6:05 your learning will be very very very
6:07 slow
6:09 you want the opposite like a baby you
6:12 want to listen to lots of easy english
6:15 easy listening is the key
6:17 easy listening will give you great
6:20 speaking
6:22 that's what all the research shows is
6:24 very powerful
6:26 so you probably need to be listening to
6:28 things that are much easier than you
6:30 think here's my basic rule for listening
6:34 you should listen to something
6:36 that you can understand 95 of it
6:40 without a dictionary
6:43 95 percent
6:46 that means you don't need a dictionary
6:48 at all because the other five percent
6:50 you can easily guess
6:52 right if there is a new word or a new
6:54 phrase that comes
6:56 you can guess the meaning because you
6:57 understand everything else you
6:59 understand the situation you understand
7:01 most of it so you can kind of guess the
7:04 meaning of that new word and that's how
7:06 you learn
7:07 naturally new vocabulary that's how i
7:10 learned it all as a child growing up
7:13 and it's how you should be learning it
7:14 too with your ears listening to very
7:17 easy english
7:19 now eventually
7:21 you listen and listen and listen and you
7:23 understand 100 percent well then it's
7:25 time for something a little more
7:28 difficult not a lot more difficult a
7:30 little more difficult
7:32 and then you listen to that again and
7:33 again and again when it becomes a
7:35 hundred percent then you find something
7:37 a little more difficult in this way you
7:39 will rapidly
7:40 increase your
7:42 ability here's what else happens
7:46 after six to 12 months it depends on the
7:49 person
7:50 you will find yourself starting to speak
7:53 english automatically
7:57 correct phrases and words will pop out
7:59 of your mouth boom they'll come out
8:01 without you thinking at all
8:05 just like your language when you speak
8:06 your language you're not always thinking
8:08 about vocabulary and translations and
8:11 all this stuff no it just comes out boom
8:14 you want to say something and it comes
8:15 out
8:16 that's what will happen with english but
8:18 first you need to focus on listening and
8:21 just listening for six to twelve months
8:24 it's okay if you speak a little bit but
8:26 mostly you should be doing lots and lots
8:28 and lots of easy listening every day
8:30 how can you do this go get some easy
8:32 audio books easy audio articles you can
8:36 get my lessons
8:38 you can get our lessons
8:41 and put them on an ipod and every moment
8:44 you have listen
8:46 be listening listening listening to this
8:47 english all the time when you wake up in
8:49 the morning listen to english you know
8:51 just 10 or 15 minutes when you're going
8:54 to work or to school
8:56 or you're at home you know cleaning the
8:58 house whatever
8:59 listen to english some more 20 minutes
9:01 30 minutes
9:03 when you have a break during the day at
9:04 lunch listen to english 10 15 minutes
9:08 when you're going home at night or
9:09 making dinner listen to english 10 15 20
9:12 30 minutes before you go to bed listen
9:15 to english again 10 15 20 30 minutes
9:18 by doing little pieces of listening all
9:21 through the day you can easily listen
9:24 for a total
9:26 of one to two hours every single day
9:29 and when you do that you will find you
9:32 will make big improvements
9:35 or it takes usually about six months
9:37 maybe less for you maybe more depends on
9:40 how much you listen depends on how easy
9:42 it is easier is better
9:46 so that's it
9:47 that it's simple this is such a simple
9:50 rule
9:51 learn with your ears
9:53 not with your eyes
9:55 and one last note
9:57 your listening ability should naturally
10:00 and always be higher than your speaking
10:02 ability
10:03 see what happens is your listening
10:04 ability pulls up your speaking ability
10:07 it happens automatically you don't need
10:09 to think about it it's easy
10:11 all you have to focus on is listening
10:13 and as you get better and better
10:15 listening your speaking will naturally
10:17 improve it's like it pulls it up pulls
10:19 it up pulls it up pulls it up
10:22 now the only problem some people have is
10:24 psychological you might have stress and
10:26 nervousness and things like that
10:29 that cause you to have problems
10:31 when it's time to speak we'll talk about
10:33 that
10:34 later in our courses we we help you get
10:38 rid of nervousness so that's not a
10:40 problem anymore
10:42 but for this secret this rule all i want
10:44 you to do is focus on listening learn
10:46 with your ears not with your eyes
10:49 simple and easy very very powerful
10:52 alright i will see you tomorrow for our
10:55 next secret it's also a very good one
10:58 and very very powerful one
11:01 remember this is a whole system so you
11:04 need to use all of these all seven of
11:06 these secrets
11:07 i mean each one of them is powerful but
11:09 when you put them all together
11:12 it's a super powerful system that will
11:14 give you
11:15 excellent english speaking
11:19 all right i'll see you tomorrow have a
11:20 great day bye
