flying with carry-on luggage is tricky when it comes to getting liquids through airport security
but what a lot of people don't know is that for most liquids there is a solid alternative today
I will share my top TSA liquid hacks and the solid toiletries that I use as well as a few
that I don't use so your next carry-on travel experience can be a breeze from start to finish
I've been a career traveler since 2007. I've traveled long term with every kind of luggage
you can imagine my record for carry-on travel was two straight years that's right for two
years everything I owned fit into a carry-on bag these days I have a home base but I'm regularly
on the road for up to six months at a time with carry-on luggage solid toiletries are honestly
one of the top reasons why I can travel for so long with just carry-on luggage they last longer
they go further and particularly relevant to the topic of this video they are totally a non-issue
when it comes to airport security first of all let's get on the same page regarding TSA liquid
rules actually let's back up even further this isn't just about the TSA which is an acronym for
Transportation Security Administration which is a U.S organization the tips in this video
are universally applicable to airport security around the world although the rules can vary from
country to Country and from airport to airport for the most part it's the same if you're ready
for whatever TSA can throw at you you're ready to travel the world now back to liquid rules
for carry-on luggage you may see signs in airports or on websites with three one one
no it's not a number you call if you have an airport emergency although I kind of thought that
at one point three one one is supposed to help you remember the TSA rules regarding liquids that you
can pack in your carry-on luggage which can be a bit confusing here's the deal this applies to all
liquids gels creams aerosols and pastes the three stands for 3.4 ounces which is 100 milliliters any
liquid you have must be in containers that are that size or smaller container sizes dictated by
what is actually on the bottle so even if what's inside the container is less than three ounces
it still needs to be in a 3.4 ounce container or smaller I learned this the hard way with
my favorite toothpaste which was 120 milliliters but it was only half full so it was obvious that
it was less than 3.4 ounces of liquid in there no deal I had to throw it away for the record
this did not happen in the United States I have a really popular episode about TSA mistakes and
a ton of people have left comments ragging on TSA saying that they never fly in the States because
of the TSA they evidently don't fly anywhere else in the world either because these liquid rules are
relatively Global I lost my toothpaste in Nepal now what I will say and then I'll end this tangent
is that liquid rules are changing some airports don't need you to pull liquids out of your bag
to go through the X-ray some airports allow you to bring bottled water through as technology advances
airports are finding other ways to scan for whatever it is they're looking for and hopefully
soon enough these airport rules won't exist but for now this is the world we live in and by the
end of this episode you'll understand why it's totally not a going concern for me even though
I travel long term with carry-on luggage only okay back to three one one three stands for 3.4
ounce containers one stands for the quart-sized resealable bag that all of your liquids must fit
into a quart by the way is just shy of one leader and it needs to be see-through I generally suggest
a Ziploc bag and I tend to have a couple of these on me for this purpose also Ziploc bags have about
a million applications for travel so you can't go wrong last year I was going through airport
security in Canada and I have my toiletries in a Ziploc bag that was a bit larger than a quart but
they weren't taking up all the space anyway the security agent handed me an actual Court
sized bag and told me that I had to fit all of my toiletries in and close the bag in this particular
case it was a tight fit because I was visiting a few friends and I brought these mini containers of
maple syrup to give away as gifts so I'm standing there stuffing all of this into a quart size bag
and it's getting pretty tight I was relaxed and in good spirits about it and so was she I said
I'm kind of stretching the plastic here she said all you have to do is close the bag anyway all's
well that ends well me and the maple syrup survived but this serves as advice to have an
actual quart-sized resealable see-through bag into which you can put all your liquids the last one in
3-1-1 means that one quart size bag is allowed per passenger 3.4 ounces one quart size bag per
passenger this also applies to food and drinks can you bring a bottle of water through no unless it
fits the 311 thing can you bring an empty water bottle through and fill it on the other side of
security yes have I accidentally gotten a bottle of water through security yes would I ever count
on that happening again no however one hack that many Travelers attest to is bringing through a
frozen bottle of water because ice is not a liquid but it's got to be frozen solid and some security
agents may still give you a hard time about that peanut butter also hot issue because it's not
exactly a liquid gel aerosol cream or paste it's kind of hard to Define but TSA clears it all up
by saying that peanut butter is a liquid because it takes the shape of its container there's a very
amusing Twitter Thread about this very hot debate I particularly liked the response that suggested
that by this definition cats as well maybe indeed a liquid anyway just three one one just do it
all right a few more important tips for Clearing airport security with liquids before we get to my
hacks when packing toiletries for travel days pack your liquid toilet trees separate from the rest
of your toiletries that way if you need to pull your liquids out of your carry-on to go through
security they're ready to go in a one quart see-through resealable bag here's the trick if
you're traveling with somebody who doesn't travel with as many liquids as you Pawn off some of your
liquids onto them every passenger has a one quart allowance so you could allocate your liquids
accordingly so that as a team you can get it all through last up keep that liquid bag accessible if
my carry-on suitcase has an outside pocket that I can access easily I'll keep it in that otherwise I
keep it in my personal item bag once I've cleared security I can put it back inside my suitcase for
the rest of the trip all right people here's the good stuff solid toiletries for travel baby
I'm gonna go through them all here I'll share what I use and love and what I've tried and don't love
as well as a few things I haven't tried that you might like to use here is my expert travel advice
for packing toiletries for travel okay we're going to start off with hair care so the first
thing that you do with your hair when you get in the shower is you shampoo it with this shampoo bar
now this is a shampoo bar from Lush although there are lots of companies that make shampoo bars and
solid shampoos the premise is easy you get your hair wet in the shower you run this over your hair
a few times and then you use your hands to work up a nice frothy lather and you rinse and repeat just
the way you would with any kind of shampoo hard to believe that it actually will get frothy and
depending on the brand of shampoo bar that you use the frothiness is definitely going to vary next
up conditioner now I used a few conditioner bars from Lush over the years with varying degrees of
success which is to say really no success however I have recently tried this pressed conditioner
bar also from Lush and this actually does work although admittedly every time I use it I kind
of don't think it's going to work so same premise as the shampoo bar you get your hair wet you run
this over your hair a few times now I definitely run this over my hair a lot more than the shampoo
bar uh I work this into the hair a fair bit and then I put it down and then use my fingers to
continue working it through my hair I'm always surprised that as soon as I put the bar down I
think oh this isn't going to work and then I start detangling my hair with my fingers and it works
so it doesn't have that same creamy consistency that a liquid conditioner would have but it does
work and this is this bar right now is about half used and I've been using it off and on
for six months so to get that this goes a long way this will last a long time the same thing with the
shampoo bars they last forever the last step of Hair Care will be styling now this is obviously
going to be different for everybody I personally like using this hair wax it's a solid that you
just put it between your hands you warm it up with your hands and then this kind of an oil I guess
will come off on your hands and then you can use that to tame flyaways and make the hair look shiny
and gorgeous but obviously what you use to style your hair is going to depend very much on you and
your personal style but that is my solid toiletry hair care regimen next up let's talk about face
care and body care so soap though soap is pretty obviously an easy thing to keep solid because
a lot of soap is in bar form already so obviously a bar of soap is solid and you don't have to worry
about liquid toilet tube restrictions with that the same thing goes for face soap if you like to
use a specially ph balanced form of soap for your face you can find bars of soap that will suit this
the same thing goes for serums and moisturizers there are you can find face serum that is in
solid form similar to the hair wax you just rub it between your hands until enough serum or oil comes
off then you can put it on your face same thing with the moisturizer I've been working lately I've
been trying out the Body Shop Clean Sweep it's a makeup cleansing balm so sometimes I will use this
at the end of my day and I can just rub this all over my face uh rub it in and then wash it off
um so it's I don't know this one in particular is not my absolute favorite but this just goes to
show that there are face washes cleansers bombs serums that can be found in solid form you just
have to look for them next up is probably one of my favorite solid toiletry hacks and it's this
this is deodorant this tiny little puppy lasts well over a year of daily use I use this at home
abroad whether or not I'm traveling I absolutely love it I've used it for a million years maybe
not this exact one but you know what I mean and what this is is this is actually solid mineralized
salts totally natural and you wet it and then you do what you would do with deodorant and it works
a charm now not necessarily this does not have strong antiperspirant properties so if you're a
heavy sweater this may not do it for you but this does what normal deodorant would do now you can
also just get deodorant in solid stick form that's the solid toiletry so you don't have to worry
about that as well but I find that those get used up a lot faster than this an additional benefit
of this is it never marks your clothing you know how you get sometimes water you put on deodorant
and then you get these white lines on your clothes never gonna happen with this love it okay another
favorite of mine serious solid toiletry hack toothpaste that you can get in tab form so you
can get these at Lush Lush has lots of different soil solid toiletry options so Lush makes a series
of toothy tabs is what they call them these ones in particular I actually just got from Amazon but
I'm just keeping them in a toothy tab container because these are really handy but literally
one of these little puppies uh you just put it in your mouth and you chew it up and then you start
brushing your teeth and then you have a frothy lather of toothpaste and it's totally natural
which is helpful I actually find with these I only need half of one so I'll just bite off
half of one of these tablets and I will use it at night before I go to bed and then I will use the
other half in the morning when I wake up so that goes really far I mean this is right here is six
months worth of toothpaste now a solid toiletry that I'm still looking for that I would really
like to have is moisturizer I've tried a few of the moisturizer bars from Lush and I've just not
them found found them to be as moisturizing or easy to use as a simple cream moisturizer
would be they've been either too oily and haven't absorbed properly or they've been too difficult
to soften up with my hands to spread enough that I feel like it's taking care of dry skin issues
but there are plenty of solid moisturizer options that you can find online you can find if you look
up moisturizer stick or solid moisturizer you'll see lots of options so I encourage you to try some
and see how they work for you my solution in the meantime is just to buy a liquid moisturizer at my
destination I'm gonna go to the supermarket anyway uh partly because I love to visit supermarkets
when I travel it's one of these kind of cultural explorative things that I love to do at my
destination and moisturizer generally speaking is quite inexpensive so I can just get a container
of moisturizer I can use it while I'm there and whatever I don't use I don't mind leaving behind
so right now that's my solution is not to bring moisturizer and to buy it at my destination but
I'm still on the hunt for a good solid moisturizer so if you know of a solid moisturizer that you
like to use and travel with let me know in the comments because I'd love to learn last but
certainly not least is sunscreen now there's two different forms of sunscreen that I use and travel
with one is stick form this one made is made by Neutrogena it's meant for your face but you can
use it all over your body if you want the one thing I would suggest with any of these sticks
is don't just apply the stick and leave it because you probably didn't cover all all of the areas and
you're going to get a very strange looking sun tan slash sunburn if you don't rub it on and then use
your hand to just make sure that it's actually evenly spread trust me on this one the other one
that I have that I've been using that I find is really interesting is this powder this is actually
a sunscreen powder that's in the bottom here and there's a brush up top and you just twist it so
the sunscreen part is opened and the powder comes through the top and you can actually see a little
bit of powder there so you can just brush that on it's a little laborious to use this all over
your body but this is great if you want to touch up the sunscreen on your face and especially too
if you wear makeup and you don't want to mess up the makeup with a bar type of or liquid type
of sunscreen this can be a great alternative do you have any TSA liquid hacks or solid toiletry
recommendations got any stress-free travel tips to share a lot of rip in the comments so we can
all travel Smart in style I'm Nora Dunn aka the professional hobo and I'll catch you next time
