thank you for joining us today Clifford

working on her PhD or I'm sorry her
doctoral study for her doctor of Public
Health program at Walden in her free
time she loves spending time with family

well and last but definitely not least
we have also mph alumnist and practicum
preceptor latata Wilkerson latata is the

Aid Atlanta she received her Bachelor's
in community health from Georgia
Southern and her mph from Walden in 2010
she has worked at Aid Atlanta for over
17 years contributing to policy
development standards of care evolving
the quality management program and
creating Performance Management
dashboards very impressive when she is
not working latata enjoys volunteering
playing tennis and H her photography
skills so these are their very
impressive introductions and we'll be
hearing each of their stories throughout the
webinar okay and with that we're gonna
review our objectives for today's
webinar we here in Career Services work
with many public health students at all
levels and from all backgrounds
Bachelors Masters and doctoral levels
and common questions in career services
that we get are what can I do with this
degree how how can I get my foot in the
door if I don't have any related
experience what will I need to become
successful how can I make a career
transition and I know many of you
mentioned that um in our poll question
so hopefully we'll be addressing um most
of those questions during the
webinar so today we'll be exploring
public health career career Trends
options different uh job titles and
settings we're going to of course listen
to our alumni success stories gain
strategies to Market yourself for the
practicum experience and gain resources
to build your experience and your Professional
Network so before starting your career
exploration ask yourself three important questions
questions
so in the area of Public Health what
prompted you to pursue your degree in
public health in the first place
something must have prompted you what is
your passion is it a passion for helping
others are you making a career
transition or advancing is this a new
stage in your life or is it your
commitment to social change number two
what skills and strengths do you bring
to the field of Public Health are you a
great communicator are you a competent research
research
how do others perceive you what
experiences in your personal or
professional life have brought you to
this point in your career so this
question actually also helps you to
address and identify all of your
transferable skills everyone has
transferable skills from previous work
and life experiences so definitely don't
discount those and three finally what is
your end goal with pursuing your degree
where do you see your yourself in the
next two five or 10 years so on the
career services um you'll see this box
at the bottom of the screen if you'd
like to explore more about self-
knowledge we have a self- knowledge tab
on the career services website and now I
will hand it over to Dr Bon to discuss
job Trends and career
paths sure thank you um so I'm excited
that you all are on the call
um the field of Public Health you've
chosen a good one I guess is what I want
to say first of all obviously I'm biased
because it is my professional home as
well but um it is a growing field um
it's a much needed field um there are
many job opportunities which we'll talk
about and I think the really exciting
part it's a very diverse field as far as
the types of jobs you can receive so
when we think of Public Health all the
state that you see here um and you know
it could mean epidemiology but it also
could mean biostatistics it could mean
maternal and child health and you work
for Wick women infant and children it
could be International or Global it
could be specifically behavioral where
you're working one-on-one with
individuals to say help quit smoking um
it could be more laboratory driven so um
science driven looking at uh research
protocols or new drugs that are coming
on the market it could be more Health
Services management meaning you're
working in a hospital clinic like
setting it's a very uh it's a field that
opens many many doors for you and so um
in listening to Lisa talk about why you
joined um making career
changes uh looking to get into the field
um I'd say the hardest part honestly
about public health is figuring out what
you want to do because there are so many
options um so I think we're ready to go
so when we look at Trends and this is
Workforce Trends so um we know that the
average age of folks and this is
domestic so this would be very us-
Centric data um when we look at the
average age of folks that are working
specifically in a state public health
Workforce so when we say that we're
talking about like a state health
department or the regional County Health
departments um the average age is um 46
um and this statistic is several years
old so we're looking at an average age
of over 50 um that means retirement
isn't far um it means that pairing down
in in in the workforce could be coming
we know that about 50% um of the
workforce will be retiring in the next
couple years that's great for you all as
well um Workforce and and so what I'm
saying that is is you may say oh 50
people are going to work till they're 60
but what that what I see when I think of
that is is those individuals are not
entry-level positions right I mean they
they've been in the field for a long
time so they are in the management level
Senior Management level positions and so
what that means is and in my eyes it
means that those entrylevel positions
that are are captured now and in the
next couple years have room for growth
there isn't a glass ceiling at at entry
um there's going to be mobility within
employment because of the turnover that
we're expecting with the Baby Boomers
and just younger than the Baby Boomers
coming out of the workforce so um so
when we break down that we look at when
we're looking at Public Health about 19%
or so are working in federal agencies so
when we think of federal uh that's us
again but we're thinking like Center for
Disease Control um a big uh big entity
State again that could be like a state
health department when I lived in South
Carolina that would have been something
like we called it dhack the Department
of Health and environmental control um
local agencies so that could be um your
local excuse me local Health agencies
those could be local health clinics that
could uh be anything at the local level
meaning it's not necessarily tied up to
a state or federal level and then other
settings that could be higher education
that could be research it could be
nonprofit um
nonprofit is a huge employer of Public
Health individuals and when we say
nonprofit we're thinking of everything
from American Red Cross American um
Heart Association lung associations
Diabetes Association um Planned
Parenthood Federation of America I mean
the list goes on and on um and then not
to mention institutions of higher
education if we can go the next
slide so when you're thinking about job
jobs um and you're thinking about what
your function could be here's a very
short list I could have made slide upon
slide upon slide of um functions that
you would have as a public health
practitioner um you know working in the
community research these are also key
phrases to think about when you're
developing your resume developing your
your um cover letter because these are I
don't want to say buzzwords because I
feel like buzzwords mean they are going
to come and go and that's not what I
mean by these words these are key
functions of public health professionals
these are things that we were looking
for you to have and so if you're a
graduate of the mph program you've had a
lot of this okay you're getting this in
your classes you're taking classes on
design implementing an evaluation you're
taking policy development class you're
talking about research you're taking a
leadership class that's going to be
talking that has already talked about
volunteer you know management that just
has the word volunteer in front of it
but it's still people management um so
you're getting this but being able to um
as Nicole mentioned be able to verbalize
those skill sets is really important and
here are some ways to do that or these
are some phrases that you'll be looking
for these are also functions that you
would see in a job description um
usually when you're looking at a job
description it'll bullet out the the
day-to-day functions and these are the
when we talk about work settings I I
mentioned this a little bit earlier but
I wanted to give you more of an
exhausted list um and and the reason I
do this is because I think sometimes uh
in public health we get very tunnel
visioned in thinking only about a state
health department or you know the
CDC um and there's so many options above
and beyond those two so colleges and
universities um I can say as a public
health professional I've I've had one
job that wasn't in HED and I had I
haven't always been on the academic side
of highered there's a whole side of um a
traditional brick-and mortar University
that has that delivers programs and
services to the students faculty and
staff so I was doing direct public
health education but my target
population was always the college
students fantastic super fun job um but
it's a an entity or a workplace where
people for they forget about it because
we often think about that Federal
hospitals health insurance insurance
companies are huge I know when I D was
pregnant with my daughter I was getting
regular calls from the public health
professional that worked for my health
insurance and they were checking up to
make sure that I was having prenatal
care and had I thought about
breastfeeding and did I pass my glucose
test um for you know just stational
diabetes they are they have a strong
interest in public health at the
insurance level so thinking about that
Managed Care organizations ad ministries
of health professional organizations so
you know American Public Health
Association is a National Organization
that many of us are members of but they
have a team of folks right I mean they
have a huge professional staff that is a
place of employment private and public
foundations um the um the Clinton
Foundation is a huge Public Health um
employer huge especially Global um
Melinda and Bill Gates The Gates
Foundation huge also the K through2
systems research and development um
organizations substance abuse centers
people always think that only
individuals that work or have degrees in
counseling or medical related degrees
would be hired in substance abuse and
that is not the case at all they are um
always looking for those prevention or
public health folks there has to be
someone that does the Outreach in the
community aspect of their agency and
then work site health promotion or work
site public health this is big this we
know that um companies know that a
healthy employee saves them money and
time um and and when I say money it
means they're on the job more often and
taking less sick days but it also costs
them less and in health insurance and so
um really uh a really growing field and
[Applause]
opportunities next slide
please so um this py graph here is
referring specifically to employment
status upon entry to the mph program so
these are our students in the mph
program and when they first started what
they were doing um and I put this up
here for a couple of reasons one I'm
know that um when I talk with students
they feel isolated they feel like
they're doing this all on their own and
they're the only one that's employed
full-time and I you know they feel very
isolated and I'm um wanting you to know
that that's not the case that 64% of
your colleagues in the mph program work
full-time um and then another six% work
at least part-time many are
self-employed um so um the other reason
I'm telling telling you this is is if
you're employed somewhere at any level
you have marketable transferable skills
to a public health position and so I
often hear from students that say um for
instance I work at Target I've never
worked in a public health agency I don't
have job experience I heard that a
couple of times in the in the comments
Leisa was saying and I would beg to
differ I would want to be your devil
Devil's Advocate I would say no no
that's not true working at Target you
have fantastic people skills you are you
may be handling money which means you
are fiscally responsible and you're
trustworthy there are many transferable
skills that uh are needed in the public
health field um so just thinking a
little bit differently and presenting
that on Ta on paper I also always I came
from a brick-and mortar setting and have
only been at Walden now full-time for
five years and I can say that because
all of your communication with your
faculty members or I shouldn't say all a
great majority of the communication you
have with your faculty members is
written that is a skill set of yours
that is a differentiator compared to
your colleagues that are not coming from
a traditional or that are coming maybe
from a traditional you have written
communication to your um benefit and so
use that make that another thing that
you you mark on your resume
if I can get I think I have one more
good slide okay and so of those
individuals that are employed here is
where folks are working in the public
health field already public
administration Health Care Human
Services Social Services um p through 12
that that's like preschool through 12 uh
system engineering and technology and
business management and all of those
entities have transferable skill sets
that would help you make that transition
into a public health
um Public Health position and and we
often hear from uh students that say yes
I work in public health I work more as a
maybe an administrative assistant type
of role or a program assistant role and
I want the program director program
management role you are a part of it
you're a part of the lingo you see the
day-to-day operations you know you know
how to get it done you know what it
means to be successful and um
communicating that is is the most
I think yeah I think that's it for me
thank you Michelle that was wonderful so
absolutely um moving on to experience
and I'm glad uh Michelle mentioned she
really reinforced those transferable
skills so here at Career Services I mean
we could do a whole webinar on that but
we're here to help you to identify those
transferable skills how to I articulate
them on your resume on your cover letter
when you're interviewing and tell those
stories and mo most of our speakers
today will be talking about that too
many of them made a a career transition
so as you progress through your program
at Walden you definitely want to
consider okay we're going to talk about
now how can you gain some experience
before you
graduate how can you build your network
and one way to do that you want to start
thinking about your Niche what are you passionate
passionate
about how can you start defining your
Niche many of you might have an idea of
a health issue that you're really
passionate about or a population that
you want to work with or a work setting
or a job function many of those that
Michelle mentioned in fact our
presenters today are in not in your
typical Fields you know so or in the
work settings I would say they're in the
field of Public Health but not in the
typical uh you know the department
County Department of Public Health Etc
so we're going to hear from our alumni
panelists so ask yourself what are you
passionate about what populations what
environments might you want to work in
and what
settings would allow you to really
pursue that
passion in one way to gain experience is
through volunteering and here we're just
um identifying a lot of the Walden
Career Services resources that we have
on our
website um
idealist.org volunteer
match service leader these are all
websites that you can find on the career
services excuse me website and we also
have a webinar called maximizing Career
Success Through strategic
volunteering a phenomenal webinar so
volunteering in your community is a
great way to build your resume build
your experience in those qualifications
and also build your network so feel free
to reach out to and T into the website
resources and you want to be proactive
you want to take initiative be proactive
in your search again we're gonna we're
about to hear from Mr Obie how proactive
he was in his search and the results
that he yielded from that um you can use
Google of course Dex online identify
come up with a list excuse me of
organizations in your area that you're
interested in use LinkedIn to reach out
research the mission and vision of your target
target
organizations what clients or
populations do they serve what is the
culture like so many many questions you
can ask yourself and answer as well and
so next we're going to uh talk to
Clifford Obie who's going to share how
he leveraged networking volunteering and
other proactive strategies to land both
his practicum and move up in his current
organization are you there Clifford yes
I'm right here excellent so much EX oh
you're very welcome so I know Clifford
that you actually started out before
getting into public health you started
out in
telecommunications can you tell us um
how you decided to move into public
health and how you got interested in public
public
health okay thank you so much um
one thing I want to say first is
listening to uh Dr bin I was very
impressed with the advice she gave
regarding uh the skill set one can bring
into uh Public Health um thank being yes
I was in the Telecom industry for so
many years I worked for MCI for those
who knew the company when he was
competing with AT&T I moved from there
AT&T and became a one of the global
account managers and then retired from
Telecom Italia before I um thought about
coming into public
health um one thing is whenever you are
going to have a career change you have
to find out about that career change
what uh you want to do with it as uh she
rightfully stated figure out what you
want to do in my own
experience before I got into uh the
field of Public
Health I had to start from the bottom I
went in and became uh get a
certification in chemical dependency
counseling from there I started
volunteering uh from uh to participate
in events organized by local public
health agencies to find out what is
going on in this IND IND how are they
helping people and what are their
services all
about that helped me to make a lot of
connections within the uh uh um Los
Angeles County Department of uh Public
Health and Social
Services um from there uh while I was
doing my mph at Warden I wanted to work
for the Department it was very difficult
but I persisted going in
applying for my own practicum over there
eventually some of the members in the
management remember that I was one of
the people volunteering for things like
a TV screening or any time they had an
outbreak I'll be out there volunteering
they gave me opportunity and uh I did my
practicing part of it over there before
I joined and other organization where I
finished the
pratic that
said public health is a very large area
and there's a great work opportunity in
there I I had to stay back a little bit
about why I get into public health I got
into public health
because one of I usually travel to
Africa I'm from Eastern Nigeria a place
called azer
uh when I get when I I I got to this
country in the early
Aries uh my objective was to do business
you know just then make money and go
back each time I travel home I found
people are dying for from preventable
diseases my agates the people who
celebrated my coming to United States
most of them are lost through this
process they were dying left and right
and I started wondering what is
happening here people are no longer
living long life expectancy is getting
shorter and shorter what is going
on I came back and um I was so worried I
spoke to my wife about it uh she's a
registered nurse by the way she said if
you really want to help your people I
think you should go and find out more
about what is going on and how you can
help them and the best way is getting to
to Public Health because there's a whole
lot of research opportunities in public
health that's how I foged from business
public okay
continue that is fantastic um can you just
just
tell uh Chuka Mika could you just tell
our attendees a little bit about how you
moved up within your organization
yes you started as um the counselor and
then you were promoted into another
position and then another position and
then we can move on and that would be
great yes um I when I was working as a
counselor uh I uh I was promoted as a
program director with the organization
called U single parents of power and one
of my um job there was to design
programs and help new
counselors teach them on how to handle
people with substance abuse and the
other thing is to go out and speak
publicly on areas that can help people
prevent um getting addicted at one of
those uh uh occasions I met uh people
from um the uh
uh uh uh hopeful St
Foundation uh that's when I was doing my
um mph at
Warden when I completed my mph at
Warden um they had an
opportunity for somebody to uh take over
the position of uh executive director of
the of the organization because they
wanted somebody who has experience
who have been able to work with the uh
people that are in need and that risk
populations the organization deal with
the mentally
disabled uh persons uh helps them to
find homes where they can live helps
them to uh be self dependent teach them
how to handle certain things and um
I that's how I got to who I am
today yes I had somebody who uh were asking
asking
about how he or she can get into
assistant Assisted Living uh job in
public health yes you the person you can
get in there very easily one of the few
things you can do right now while you
are in school is to volunteer with your
Regional centers I think in California
here there are many offices or Regional
centers that take care of the mentally
disabled people and uh even uh adult
housing adults that have some kind of
health problem that need to leave on uh
outside their homes when you volunteer
with these Regional centers you can get
a lot of information on how to get a job
and even own your own homes
uh where you can uh get make good money
working uh in Assisted Living uh field
you also have to look into I think we'll
have to move on but that is phenomenal
thank you for sharing your story and
great volunteering advice and as you all
can see on the slide thank you so much
for sharing your amazing story and now
we're going to discuss some networking
strategies so you can see from his slide
uh Clifford recommends that you serve
your community in any way you can you
attend and get involved in local events
and health screenings that's how he got
founded by the nonprofit and got a job
make a difference make connections and
this is quote unquote for him that's how
you bring about social change so that is
fantastic thanks again
Obie okay now we're going to move on to
networking by tapping into the power of networking
networking
like as many of our alumni presenters
have done you can learn from other
professionals establish your reputation
and then uncover
opportunities so you want to make sure
that you connect both online and face
Toof face and many ways that
um Mr Obie has been recommending and Dr
Bon and myself is joining professional
associations and get involved attend
conferences and workshops join some
LinkedIn groups and we're going to
recommend some in a moment uh showcase
your knowledge skills and strengths and
keep building that
Network on the career services website
under the resources tab we have a list
of professional
associations and I will also be adding
additional resources that Dr Bon sent me
along with the archive webinar so it'll
be going on our website if you go to the
Health Sciences resources tab then click
on Resources by college as you can see
Circle on the screen you can go to our
Resources and then of course if you're
on LinkedIn and we hope that you are um
it's currently the largest global
professional networking site here's just
a small sampling I put in the word
Public Health into the search box and
then clicked on groups and these are
just a small sampling the global Public
Health American Public Health
Association and you can see the large
number of members they have in the
thousands and even hundreds of thousands
so just the networking potential and
connecting with others is pretty much infinite
infinite
exponential when you connect with people
feel free to reach out to them and
schedule what's called an informational
interview it's when you ask a person 20
or 30 minutes of their time you come up
with some questions to ask them uh gain
insights into the profession uh career
path a typical day on the
job and it's a great way to build your
network so during an informational
interview come up with a list of
questions and again take this
opportunity to build the connection and
relationship with them and share your
Knowledge and Skills and always remember
to stay in touch and with really
piggybacking on the whole idea of
connecting with people on LinkedIn and
scheduling informational interviews Mar
has a perfect uh Career Success Story
related to that so welcome to the
program Mariana thank you so much for
Mariana you um networking was really as
I just mentioned a key factor in both
Landing your practicum position as well
as your permanent full-time position
when you completed your mph can you
share the uh your kind of networking
story and some specific strategies that
you use to land your practicum and then
your full-time position that would be
great yes I definitely utilized LinkedIn
um which is a great website and great
professional networking website um well
first of all I created a pretty great
profile and then uh I just started
clicking I knew that I was uh I actually
was seeking out public health professional
professional
and uh I invited to connect I invited
them to connect um I knew that I wanted
to do my practicum at at the uh State Health
Health
Department uh so that was my target
company and um I live in Austin and it's
kind of limited here so our County
Health departments are small so my
target was the state um the State Health
Department and so I just kind of sent
kept sending messages to the people who
did accept my request to to to uh uh to
connect and uh I introduced myself and I
described the the um my uh practicum and
what I needed and what I was interested
in and uh I did get a response um now
mind you I did send out a lot and I only
got one back but that's all I needed and
so this person have was um actually the
director of the emergency management
section and he basically helped me
through the process of applying um and I
got the um the state Blue Ribbon
internship which is supposed to be
prestigious and it was it was a nice uh
internship I had a lot of fun uh I even
got to uh go with them to a conference
in Dallas so uh the state covered my
travel expenses to join in this
conference so it was really great it was
a great experience and then um after
that I um I did not get hired by the
emergency department section because I
didn't really have that background but
um I just kept applying um applying to
jobs uh through their openings and
basically every day just kind of check
the openings and apply to what I thought
that would be a good fit for me and for
my background and then uh that's how I
ended up with the cancer
but uh yeah so I mean it it networking
was definitely a big thing you really
have to um just uh kind of seek the
opportunities and don't be afraid to uh
you know to uh connect with people now I
also used uh someone on um uh our
academic coordinator she helped me with
the job interview she prepared me so um
that was that was very
helpful um great and also Mariana when
you when it came time to land the
position um at the
registry didn't you again then reach out
to your old
Network yes the acade well that's uh the
academic coordinator she was basically
the internship she was kind of over she
she's the person who oversees all the
interns and the sure the preceptor uhuh
yeah no no no she they we we do have the
state has a um a separate um
academic I forget what their name is
but yeah they have different type of
internships they have lots of interns
it's on their website but anyway this
person is in charge of uh interviewing
the interns and placing them etc etc the
uh receptor who helped me get the uh the
internship uh is was one of the section
directors so he just kind of happened to
connect with me and that's how I you
know she he sent my resume forward to
the to the academic coordinator but in
any event she did help me uh
with uh with the preparation uh for the
interview went over yeah we went over
all the job requirements and we kind of
made sure that my she asked me so how
does this fit your your background how
does how can you do this how can your
experience fit on this requirement or
how you know so those type of things and
that was very helpful and I was prepared
I was definitely prepared and this time
I did get an interview because before
that I submitted several applications
and no one called me back so she really
did help me a lot okay great thank you
so much Mariana for sharing your story
and another thing we can learn from you
is um persevere don't give up so as you
can see her tips for success is be
proactive Don't Be Afraid just connect
with as many individuals as possible
reach out for advice and help pursue
what interests you and be flexible and
keep an open mind because she was really
interested in going in One Direction and
then ending ended up somewhere else so
you never know you gota be flexible
sorry to be flexible now I was going to
say that you do have to be flexible
because I never dreamed of I didn't even
know what registry was so uh and we are
actually this the uh part of the the
State Health Department so uh I do work
for the state but for the health
department but yeah so you never know
you never know where you're going to end
up exactly thank you so much Mariana
thank you very much thank you again for
having me thank you absolutely
absolutely okay so moving on to your
next steps preparing for your practicum
and Beyond think about what else uh you
need in order to achieve your
goals and with that we're just going to
jump right into our next speaker um our
Walden alumni panelist and practicum
preceptor so she has a double role
webinar latata are you there yes I'm
here okay okay great it looks like I'm
feedback okay L can you tell us what are
some research a potential
practical sure um I think it could be
helpful to start with the your professor
um many times professors have a history
of sites that have been that have hosted
students in the past so they may be able
to give you a start there um as well as
sometimes I receive calls for people who
are interested in internships and even
if we don't have an opportunity
available I can make them aware of other
similar organizations that might suit
their needs so um and even um
organizations who may have never hosted
an intern um dependent on what's
presented in terms of interest and what
their needs might be they may be open to
um to host in an intern so um I would
say just you know as some of the things
that were mentioned earlier um you know
perusing um local Health departments um
community- based organizations nonprofit
organizations s um and healthare
entities I'm just doing some searches
online to see what opportunities may
exist um many times those opportunities
are stated on the website there's a
wealth wealth of information there in
terms of um programs scope of um
services and Care um that might provide
some insight regarding
opportunities okay
fantastic what oh go ahead I was just
going to say um internship finder
is also another resource that's very
beneficial it's a um it's a website has
a free service and it has tons of
resources so um I'd suggest using that
as well oh
great and what should students consider
when exploring sites or identifying
preceptors I would say um depending on
whether you've already um specified an
area of Interest um you may for example
if you're interested in a career change
or you're not necessarily certain you
may want to
explore um a site that's doing work that
you're not familiar with um it could
potentially open you up to um additional
opportunities some of the
non-traditional opportunities that have
been mentioned before um right for
example you know I have worked in Human
Service provision for my entire career
but when seeking an internship site I
contacted the local Health Department
and they had opportunities available in
the emergency preparedness um section
and so I ended up interning there and it
was a wonderful insightful
experience thank you for sharing that
perfect sure that's kind of what
happened with Mariana she was intending
and going in One Direction and one in
another right right okay how um do
students best Market themselves and Wen
like things that you can think about
since you've been a preceptor for a
while of how potential candidates can um
maybe stand apart or set themselves
apart from you know being at
Walden sure um again I would Echo some
of the things that were mentioned before
in terms of um putting your strengths um
forward um those transferable skills
that you know you um may not necessarily
think are applicable to the site um
presenting those um so that the site can
determine what projects or opportunities
may exist um within the site um you know
someone may be well versed in SPSS or
Excel you know many times that's an
invaluable resource for organizations um
you know if you versed in um research or
um volunteer coordination um just
putting those um skills and experiences
forth um provides the the preceptor with
um an opportunity for ideas of who the
individual may be able to work with
programs that they may be able to work
with and initiative that may be um
upcoming those are really really good
points okay thank you um also what do
you particularly look for um when you're
interviewing potential
candidates um I am super busy so um I
tend to look for individuals who are
going to be able to contribute to our
existing work in some Manner and so I
specifically look for interest in our
mission or interest in an issue that's
related to our mission um if there are
interests or skills that are being
presented that match um organizational
needs um those are things that we're
specifically always looking for we I I
also have colleagues who um will
communicate a need for an intern for a
particular um reason so that's something
that is kept front of mind whenever I'm
interviewing but um again because of
schedules competing priorities
definitely looking for someone who is
can can function somewhat autonomously
who's going to be assertive and um you
know I'm forthcoming about you know
their interests and needs and you know
um effective
communication um ultimately
professionalism is super important um
because it's going to provide some level
of insight regarding um potential
opportunities um Community engagement um
and what the partnership between the
preceptor and the student could
potentially look
like fantastic advice thank you so much
latata sure I really appreciate you
sharing it's my
pleasure excellent and with that we'll
keep moving
on okay we're getting some feedback so
um from my side it's hard for me to tell
if you all can make sure you're muting
when you're not speaking and then when
you have to unmute if you could just
make sure your computer volume is turned down
down
and that would be great it'll help with
the feedback okay so moving on you know
considering your next steps I think all
of our panelist and have given you all
excellent advice and personal stories
and experiences on how to move forward
um consider your next steps you know are
there any trainings are you interested
in a doctoral program I think there are
plenty of resources here to get those
questions answered for you people and
we cannot emphasize enough continue to
build those qualifications and your
reputation you know get involved with
your local or state professional association
association
Volunteer attend conferences speak on
your topic get involved in your
community submit articles to a
newsletter partner with another
professional and deliver a presentation
you know assume leadership roles at work
there are many things you can do so just
get out there and even if you just pick
one thing and to do it contribute to
your community and then of course you're
supporting Walden social change Mission
at the same
time and with that uh we are going to
open it up for questions to our audience
so if you could just type your question
in the question box and uh my supervisor
Lisa Cook is gonna help us feel those
questions great thanks Nicole so Kennedy
ask any suggestions on how to get
part-time online Public Health consultant
opportunities does anyone want to take that
that
one okay what is the question I again
please um any suggestions on how to get
part-time online Public Health Consulting
opportunities uh yes
yes
um there are rich opportunities uh to
get online uh Public Health uh publication
publication
opportunities if you um can go into any
of the local Department of Social
Services or um or local public health
sites you will see requests for
submission of um
articles that may be needed to be
published in their uh local communities
that way you can apply you can submit
your own um
Oracle and then from there they know who you
you
are the very few ones you're going to do
first may not be paid for but subsequent
ones you may start putting in some fees
to be able to contribute in their local or
or
publication uh platforms because they
need all these kind of resources in
their side not just what they use in the
department but they get information from
well does that answer your
question yes I believe it does thank you
so um let's see another question is what
would you suggest um for looking for
opportunities in epidemiology Beyond
Health departments the CDC the World
Health Organization are there other
places to look Beyond those
organizations sure I can take this
that's this is Michelle um great yeah
absolutely so you know the field of EP
and actually we're working on a webinar
for this so I would say stay tuned and
the webinar will be called like the many
faces of
epidemiology because of exactly what
you're saying that the field of EP
epidemiology is varied so what an
epidemiologist does at the CDC
could it is so different than what an
epidemiologist would be doing say at
even a state health department or a
nonprofit and so so what I'm thinking
you're going to want to do is you can
you can search the word
epidemiology but you can also be
searching for the skills or the duties
of an
epidemiologist so
um it's a little bit it can be more a
little bit trickier um only because
uh it may not say the word epidemiology
but the word is epidemiology or the the
work is epidemiology so you're you're
studying disease transmission you may
not work for a health department but
you're pulled in on say a disease or a
disaster outbreak or um a disease
outbreak in a local area um you're still
doing that type of work but you're not
um classified an epidemiologist so I
would think more of the skill sets and
what you want to do and I would then
also challenge maybe why you don't want
to work in the in the settings that you just
just identified
identified
um as they will be probably the most
likely to be hiring true
epidemiologists that are working in that field
field
full-time all public health
professionals are going to be having
some component of epidemiology some
traces of Epi in their jobs others will
just be full-time EP epidemiology so it
just kind of
depends talking to your profs or the Epi
profs it would be a really good um
starting point because they have great
experience in the field we don't hire
any uh faculty within mph that do not
have practice-based um
experience so they all have practice
experience great for the question that
was a sec a second ago regarding being
looking for something online there is a
a a job post board called Flex jobs and
there are many um many public health
positions posted in there right
everything from um curriculum writing to
survey development writing that type of
thing essay writing blog
writing lots of
opportunities excellent thank you are
would you have any recommendations for
biostatistics jobs within mph where what
types of roles
sure so and EP if so
biostatistics I can say as someone that
has a PHD that word scares me so uh it
it's not my expertise it's not something
that I'm strong in so if you are strong
in it you need to Market it because it
is um it is a skill set that is needed
in the field of Public Health but not
one that is widely uh that a lot of
folks feel comfortable able with um so
if you are good with biostats running
data understanding SPSS understanding
possibly SAS understanding how to run
qualitative data versus quantitative
data uh there are many many
opportunities for you um they may not be
listed as biost staticians um but they
may be listed as working with data or S
um surveying or research um re almost
all research big research projects are
going to have um biost staticians on
their team because they need someone
running all the numbers um again it that
would be more researching and looking
for skill sets versus looking at just
that title of a job and that's why
looking for a job is a full-time job I
feel like that's my go-to saying it is a
lot of work in time but well spent um
it'll be worth your
time great thank you
any suggestions for building a LinkedIn
profile that will stand out in the field
of Public
Health this is Nicole I can answer with
LinkedIn because basically the same
advice applies to whether it's public
health or anything else um so you know
again I don't know your your level of
Competency with uh LinkedIn but LinkedIn
we have a webinar series for anyone
who's interested on our archive webinars
page and it breaks link down LinkedIn
into three steps launching with LinkedIn
so it'll show you how to build your profile up to 100% with examples and
profile up to 100% with examples and then branding with LinkedIn is what
then branding with LinkedIn is what you're speaking of so branding yourself
you're speaking of so branding yourself uh think of what Dr Bon said and
uh think of what Dr Bon said and including and incorporating some of
including and incorporating some of those key wordss what are your passions
those key wordss what are your passions um taking advice from the webinar so you
um taking advice from the webinar so you can highlight your accomplishments from
can highlight your accomplishments from your Academic Program have you worked on
your Academic Program have you worked on projects have you collaborated in team
projects have you collaborated in team projects PowerPoints you know what types
projects PowerPoints you know what types of uh you know a sampling of your
of uh you know a sampling of your research work you can also self-publish
research work you can also self-publish on LinkedIn so it's kind of like write
on LinkedIn so it's kind of like write articles and share them with the
articles and share them with the LinkedIn Community um you know
LinkedIn Community um you know incorporate those keywords show your
incorporate those keywords show your work you can upload videos PowerPoint
work you can upload videos PowerPoint Word documents PDF so it's more than
Word documents PDF so it's more than just a resume LinkedIn but it's a
just a resume LinkedIn but it's a comprehensive e portfolio with visuals
comprehensive e portfolio with visuals um really in your summary I can't
um really in your summary I can't emphasize enough you know highlighting
emphasize enough you know highlighting those key words what you're passate
those key words what you're passate about and then if you don't have a lot
about and then if you don't have a lot of experience you know take the advice
of experience you know take the advice from the webinar and get out there and
from the webinar and get out there and volunteer join a professional
volunteer join a professional association and all those things that
association and all those things that you can add to your LinkedIn profile
you can add to your LinkedIn profile will help uh reinforce your
will help uh reinforce your brand Lisa this is Michelle I'd like to
brand Lisa this is Michelle I'd like to um add one more comment if that's okay
um add one more comment if that's okay um so the last two questions I answered
um so the last two questions I answered about EP and biostats um I believe uh
about EP and biostats um I believe uh that you all will receive a handout um
that you all will receive a handout um as a result of this and it's a a laundry
as a result of this and it's a a laundry list of good websites for job searching
list of good websites for job searching however um I just want to make a plug
however um I just want to make a plug for one and uh it's the Emy uh School of
for one and uh it's the Emy uh School of Public Health so you should be able to
Public Health so you should be able to just Google and if you're you know
just Google and if you're you know anxiously to do it right now and you
anxiously to do it right now and you don't have the handout in your hands um
don't have the handout in your hands um it's uh it's Emory School of Public
it's uh it's Emory School of Public Health job posting board
Health job posting board um and on the leftand side uh you can
um and on the leftand side uh you can view jobs in different ways you can do
view jobs in different ways you can do uh view jobs by the city um by the
uh view jobs by the city um by the country by the date it's posted but then
country by the date it's posted but then you also have the ability to query down
you also have the ability to query down to the industry which I think is really
to the industry which I think is really good so the individual that asked about
good so the individual that asked about you know not wanting to work in like uh
you know not wanting to work in like uh government or State Health Department
government or State Health Department you could look specifically here for
you could look specifically here for nonprofit or for-profit or other or if
nonprofit or for-profit or other or if you know the specific type of
you know the specific type of organization you want to work for you
organization you want to work for you can search by
can search by organization um and then you also can
organization um and then you also can search by title so if you're looking for
search by title so if you're looking for a title of epidemiologist or you're
a title of epidemiologist or you're looking for a title like I just queried
looking for a title like I just queried EPI and I see everything from
EPI and I see everything from epidemiologists epidemiological
epidemiologists epidemiological specialist an assistant um there's uh
specialist an assistant um there's uh probably 15 jobs postings that I'll have
probably 15 jobs postings that I'll have epie as the title um so a great site um
epie as the title um so a great site um to try thanks Michelle I'm taking a note
to try thanks Michelle I'm taking a note of that yeah I've looked at that site
before great okay um I just am G to pass along a comment to thank all of our
along a comment to thank all of our presenters because I know we're running
