Since the moon was in the dust, the sun of understanding shone in her heart.
She knew the story of the tree and read what was written for her in the book of destiny.
And though she sways today with dance and coquetry in the garden,
her fate is ultimately to be burned.
I am that ancient tree over whose head many springs and autumns have passed.
My hands are bare and my feet are in shackles,
yet I raised my head high towards the sky. My night is a night of a grave without stars,
and in my heart is the warmth of a distant star. How many times have thunderbolts of wrath been aimed at me,
and how many times has the cold lashed me with its whip? The raven built its nest on my head, and
the sky turned black like a crested feather. The night bird sang to me one day
from the depths of my heart, then left, and the nest remained empty of its voice.
The gazelles wandered lost in the desert night. Ah, those who departed and will not return!
If I do not bloom like the flowers, I have spread my shade over those who passed beneath my branches,
but the woodcutter's hand descended upon me, and the scent of smoke seeped from my heart.
I am the old man's trunk, thinking of fire, and his last wish is to become
fire.
