stay I've been out here in La you know

seeing my friends hanging out with

people that haven't seen me in a long

time because now I live in New York

doing the show I got a big SVU episode

that's featuring me and then I get my

star on the Walk of Fame yes sir yes sir

so I'm having a good week

congratulations yeah congratulations

deserved so so going into the Grammys

bro so you just did you know coming off

the the grand what is it whatever year

Grammy but it's the hip-hop turns 50.

yeah and here you're a part of that yeah

you perform new Jack Hustler yeah you

know what I mean yeah um what was that

like when you got that call

well I get the call from Quest love like

uh during the week he says ice man I

need you to come to La I'm like for what

I live you know I'm in New York he goes

uh for the Grammys

I'm like what I'm still suspicious he

said they're gonna have a hip-hop uh

reunion type thing and I still wasn't

really ready then he said nah look it's

the 50th Anniversary we're going to celebrate

celebrate

uh from melee Mel

all the way up to little baby we're

going through it and we would we want I

need you to be part of it you went too

short because you guys were the first

out of the West Coast to really break big

big

I was still hesitant yeah I was he was

like okay I they put it to you like this

you don't want to be home watching this

on TV yeah saying you got the invitation

and you didn't show up and and and then

I said yeah and then I thought I said I

know he got ice cube on speed dial so

did I say no yeah you're going to the

other house I said to myself I said okay

now usually I film on Monday and the

Grammys are on a Sunday yeah so I I

immediately called my people I said you

think I can get that Sunday off yeah I'm

at Monday off and they said well you're

off that next episode you know during

the season we get a couple episodes off

and it just it was a natural everything

just fell in place so

I come out here

and it was one of the most incredible

moments in my hip-hop career just to see

all my peers yeah and everybody to get I

was with LL Cool J people I was going to

ask that what was that like we'll talk

about that okay yeah and um I told LL I

said this is the most I've been around

this many rappers together and it wasn't

a funeral right unfortunately right wow

you know and it was a celebration and

you know a lot of people you couldn't

put everybody I was just glad I got the

call for sure so I can't speak on who

didn't make it or whatever but what I

did dig was the gangster rappers were

there you know when I say gangster

rappers I'm talking about people like

Public Enemy who you might not call but

they're hardcore right Scarface myself

too short the locks Method Man we don't

get invited to anything especially not

the grand the Grammys that might be BET

Awards exactly hardcore rappers we I

used to talk to Prodigy from Mob deep

and he's like yo guys you know they

don't let us on no red carpets man you

know we mobbed the mob yeah you know so

that whole attitude when you get in that

gangster rap you feel like you're an

outlaw anyway you feel like they ain't

gonna buy this tonight [ __ ] right you

know but we cool with that right but uh

to have all of us there that night with

the rest of our peers

it was it was it was great and the and

the response I got was nothing

it's probably one of the greatest

responses I've ever gotten just from the

fans yeah just ice it was on point you

look good everything yeah so I I was

really happy with it yeah what was your

apprehension I'm curious

I didn't know what it was you know I

mean you know when you live on a

different Coast you know to fly across

country that's six hours yeah that's

right so and then you got to get a hotel

room you got to get a lot of stuff and

then they say well you're coming all the

way across you're gonna do you're gonna

do eight bars yeah right yeah for eight

bars yeah yeah and they ain't paying you

it's just it's just something you gotta

really want to do for sure so you know

you could easily sit at home and be like

I watch it on TV that's right no I don't

go to me myself as a rule I don't go to

Awards unless I'm nominated or presented

I'm not one of those people that show up

at a war I just want to be there just to

be there yeah yeah done that yeah

exactly but uh I don't go to the Super

Bowl yeah because no one is watching the

Super Bowl everybody's just

right socialize and I'd rather stay home

I want to watch the game yeah I

literally was just telling his his close

friend was in we were in Arizona working

it yeah he was like yeah man you're

going to the guy I was like I've been

working this [ __ ] all week I'm going

home I flew home and watched the Super

Bowl with my kids my daughter went out

to the Super Bowl she don't know what

who won she don't care she was out there

she keeps you know I'm saying my

hometown you know what I'm saying Kansas

City Missouri you know I I made a point

never to bet against my homes yeah

that's oh yeah yes he's a magician yeah

with a bad foot with a bad ankles

what trone you called the 42 fake the 42

fake like he went on the sideline like

I'm playing did you see him trying to

fake him did you see he tried to run in

the game though he didn't look good yeah

but no he ran like 30 yards yeah but he

years ago he came from behind in third

quarter and tore us up man that's why we

mean he's special he spelled and he

doesn't even look like a football right

then he start on he started in baseball

I believe yeah yeah I think that was his

choice but but yeah he's he he has an

arm yeah I mean he's he has athleticism

and he's very accurate he does so many

interceptions that's right he he he's

something else so I won't bet again I

would never bet against Brady I certain

people I'm like I can't bet against them

special yeah yeah let me ask you this so

going back to the Grammys do you feel like

do you feel like the West Was properly represented

represented

I mean as well as it could be I mean the

thing of it was you know if you saying

we're gonna get go to the origin of of

the you know uh

from the West Coast I was kind of like

the first person that really blew up

that's right you know and short blew up

simultaneously that's right uh in the

bay so of course we could have had more

people you could have had but you got 20

people yeah so that's so that's my next

question do you think that it was fair

do you think it was kind of a thing

where maybe the Grammys was throwing us

a bone cause you squeezed 50 years into

like 14 minutes I don't think there was

any conspiracy not a conspiracy I think

what happened was they called quest and

they told him to curate it yeah he told

me they threw me in the dungeon with the

snakes so I get to be The Whipping Boy

of this but I actually think quests just

called people he had in his phone it's

kind of like when I did the art of rap I

just called people I knew yeah so

there's no way you were gonna you know

in this bit in this world you can't get

a win that's real it's a cash 22 damn

there with everything I watched I

watched Rihanna at the Super Bowl and I

think she did incredible even though

even before I knewed it she was pregnant

and people hated that performance

why I don't get it I don't get it it's

because you have people that you know

you know how it is man social media is a

breeding ground for for miserable

[ __ ] people that can't that

have no Talent no lives no goals no

nothing but they have a voice because of

social media you know what I mean so I

respect anybody that can do something I

can't that's right that's right and I

cannot sing Rihanna's records I can sing

a version yeah again and then sing while

pregnant while hoisted above the [ __ ]

like like 10 stories man I was getting

dizzy watching this [ __ ] like damn why

is she doing that [ __ ] oh you know what

I think because she knew she was

pregnant she made a sh she didn't turn

it down yeah she made a show that uh she

could pull off comfortably and safely if

she had it done more people would say

well she had no business doing that

right so she knew what she was doing and

it was entertaining to her fans I mean

if if the next show is is um

um

who Journey or I wanted a big rock bands

yeah right you know you could have a um

anybody kiss yeah well then black people

might sit back and go like what the hell

was that but it's just not your form of

music or a country western person but

I'm seeing a lot of black people yeah

dissing Rihanna Man listen and I don't

get it I'ma tell you Kevin Gates even

though Kevin Gates will say some left

field [ __ ] most of the time he said some

[ __ ] that was real he said you know who

my biggest haters are niggles he said

what's worse than a one [ __ ] two

niggles he said when I get on social

media who's tearing me down is my own he

said you know we only do that to each

other seemingly you know especially on

social media you don't see other

cultures using social media and the

vitriol you know what I'm saying and the

acrimonious uh narrative that they try

you know what I found out though I say

you know when you're in that state where

you're always talking bad about people

yeah you can't win in that you have to

give people their praise and positivity

and that will help you that will help

you but all that negativity you're gonna

be stuck in place like that that's right

even if I'm around a friend and they go

negative I'ma check them that's real why

are you going so hard on dude like give

me a reason a reason other than you know

it's not your flavor or whatever the

[ __ ] but nah I I've learned that so

that's why

criticism about me or whatever I don't

really pay attention yeah but I'm gonna

be honest with you I mean you're you you

you're famous Infamous for the clap back

on social media bruh

you don't give a [ __ ] when it comes to

social media you know what I mean like

like what what made like when you see

some [ __ ] what what in Ice's mind like

when you say okay I got a million

comments but [ __ ] you getting it today

I got time today you know what what what

comments or what do have people have to

do to really get you to to clown on them

because you will I mean my whole model

has always been I've never attacked but

I retaliate that's right so I'm not

somebody you know I'm not gonna go start

it but if you start it we gonna get

we're gonna we're gonna really get to it

sometimes I don't retaliate sometimes I

let it pass because some people I don't

know you know you're on Twitter whatever

and it's scrolling by and you see

somebody that's out of pocket yeah and

you just say you know what let's let

them feel this bad you know but it's

it's all done and fun I'm not that's

right I'm not

nothing on social media can actually

bother me exactly the only thing that

can bother me is one of my real friends

somebody that I really admire says something

then I might want to get on the phone

say what's happening man you know

because I care about those people that's

right I don't know everybody out there I

don't why you think people don't do that

nowadays like nowadays you notice that

people that know each other everything

is on social media in front of everybody

instead of picking up the phone

hollering at a [ __ ] it's crazy

like they'll they'll send out

subliminals and put [ __ ] on social media

what like what's that

I don't know that's not gangster that's

right that's not gangster you know what

I'm saying it's like you know holla at

phone call uh I mean people don't even

really call anymore though nah man if I

know you see it's a difference right if

I if I'm if I have contact with you

that's right but if I know you like I

know court but if something came up and

they say Court I'ma call him I'm gonna

say yo man what's happening and maybe he

can straighten it out right or maybe you

really don't give a [ __ ] whatever it is

you doing in the public eye I don't know

it's it's social media has really skewed

reality yes

it's skilled reality like what's real

yep I was sitting with this I went out

to dinner with this billionaire cat

right so

I met him in passing and like when

you're around billionaires they have all

these special people sitting around them

like they got Geniuses like this other

guy so there was this social media

genius was with this guy's Asian guy and

so he's talking to me about the

metaverse and he was deep in because

he's with the billionaire the

billionaires they fund all kinds of wild

[ __ ] I'm just having dinner with the

dude he like me so I'm having dinner and

the way to keep friends with

billionaires is never asking for [ __ ]

yeah right they'll take you out to 100

dinners put you on the boat yeah take

you on vacation with him as soon as you

ask him for something they're gone

that's it that's it yeah and they might

offer you something but never ask them I

had a guy one of my partners he was

going out with some rich guy and uh

he had some ideas and I said don't ever

pitch to them don't ever pitch this is

some game for anybody out there when

you're around people with money you

never pitch wait on them to say so

what's going on yeah when they at date

now they ask for it right and then you

say well I'm trying to do but never open

with the pitch you know what uh Court

I'm thinking maybe you could help me mm-hmm

mm-hmm

that's not how it's done right you wait

back cool and so what's going on in your

life Court yeah yeah

right there right right so anyway what

was I he was with the billionaire yeah

so this guide is social media dude tells

me he says uh

well ice you're not into social media

but what would you be more concerned

with someone seeing you looking [ __ ]

up coming out your house [ __ ] up toe up

up

or that picture

and of course the answer is the picture

why because more people can see it right

so then he says so that's just proves

your vid your virtual image is more

valuable than your real image reality

that's a hell of a perspective yeah

how about that that's crazy it's crazy

now that now that we are in this world

what people see on the internet now is

more valuable to you yep and I even

think about that when I do my shows like

I'm doing concerts I'm like

if I fall and bust my ass I'm gonna be a

meme it's like

you know whatever you already know

you're gonna Trend bro you go Trail yeah

so everything

everything has to be thought out because

you and and that stuff never leaves the

internet no that's right I mean once

it's out there it's in pen you know

another thing I kind of wanted to ask

you that I was thinking about would have

been cool at the Grammys as well what I

would like them to see because a lot of

the younger generation like they don't

know their history bro and they don't

really give a [ __ ] to no most of them

um but the fact that you uh and you not

alone you Uncle Luke Too Short

um a couple of Public Enemy NWA y'all

had to literally fight for rappers to be

able to do and say what they doing now

you know what I'm saying I think the if

you want to see something check out

Chuck's uh new movie it's on PBS it's

called Fight the Power yeah you'll

really dig it so I think it's a three or

four part series

that takes hip-hop from the social

um from the uh uh uh early

early um

damn you know people in the streets

fighting for rights civil rights the

Civil Rights movements all the way

through and it shows the fights I went

through yeah and all that stuff into how

it built and how it's more of fight the

power I advise anybody out there to try

to find that and that's what I wanted to

touch on just like what was that like

back in your career because you got to

think these these young [ __ ] they they

got really have it easy I mean they got

a Target on their back from law

enforcement and they make it easy with

their you know how they move but the

fact that you had to go to Phil Donahue

you had to go to Arsenio you had to I

remember the interview with the what's

the Reverend [ __ ] Calvin Butts but

where you was finna smack him you know

what I mean so did you feel like you had

to like had hip hop on your back and you

had to speak for everybody and fight for

everybody because you could have just

sat back and just rested on your laurels

you was getting to your money it was

iced tea you know but you spoke out I

think we liked it mm-hmm

I think we like the energy because we

knew we were fighting the power and we

knew we were pushing the line and like I

said earlier when I was letting you hear

that little podcast if there's nothing

fighting back then you're not pushing

nothing right so the fact that they was

a worried about us you know and um we

were cut for that yeah we were cut for

that Luke was cut for that we like oh

you want to do this let's go let's go so

you know I used to do shows where they

would threaten and say if you say these

words and sound South we're going to

take you to jail and they would shut off

the lights and I would jump into the pit

and run out the back and jump in and

then cross state lines it was like we

were it was like we was Outlaws and

kind of dug it yeah and it was funny

because when when snooping that was

about to do Super Bowl I talked to Snoop

and I said oh they don't want you on the

Super Bowl he said ain't that great

ain't that great so some of us like real

energy yeah because it's kind of like if

you're not getting that energy now

you're kind of like have become part of

the system yeah yeah yeah so yeah so yes

you feel like you're selling out not

well selling out it's the word selling

out is a whole nother concept to sell

out you really shut down your views

for the money yeah

but I'm on TV playing the police still

talking [ __ ] about the police that's

right so when you can give me enough

money that I say I won't talk about that

that's the sellout right right right

when you can say don't do this you know

and and matter of fact

don't only do that say something in our

benefit right you know and I've never

really have been offered that yeah

uh people would think well damn you're a

network television maybe you'll calm

down I still think I'm just as radical

as I've ever been just more focused yeah

and I'm not really just saying stupid

yeah speaking speaking of sellout right

so what's this whole conversation I

wanted to get your take on it so and I

actually highlighted P about this to to

get some insight so you see a lot of

rappers a lot of entities selling their

catalog you know you see uh Irv Gotti Dr Dre

Dre

um QC just sold for 300 million even uh

Michael Jackson's estate talking about

selling for 900.

um but you know back in the day it's

always been this this Narrative of

ownership you know what I'm saying we

ain't selling out [ __ ] we we doing it

you know

um what's your thoughts on selling the

catalog and is that something you would

is that it is mine to sell that's right

you you start a business eventually you

could sell the business now if you're

thinking like okay

you making records say it let's say I

sold 10 million records okay over my

entire career so therefore I made 10

million dollars and now they say Okay

Blau for your entire catalog we'll give

you 100 million dollars you can have it

you know what I'm saying because it's

going to take another 10 years or

whatever and it's not going to sell like

that and I could take that money and do

something different and do something

totally away from music which isn't as

janky yeah invest in other things for my

family so people think oh well you're

getting away from that that's

generational wealth yeah right you're

only [ __ ] off the generation of

wealth if you take that money and [ __ ]

it off yeah you're following me but if

you take that money and do something

smart with it

now now me personally I was signed the

Warner Brothers so it takes 35 years to

get your Masters back wow and I get my

masses back next year oh wow okay so you know

it has to be a correct offer but

it's people it's yours to do it that's

right it's it's what you've worked for

it's the it's like you've built the

company you've built the business and

it's up to you that's right so you think

the people because you know it's all

like you say you damned if you do and

[ __ ] with social media exactly but the

whole Narrative of oh man you know they

selling out they're selling out to the

white man you know all that goofy [ __ ]

like they know it's a white man yeah

that's right it's somebody with money

bought the Beatles that's right exactly

that was a black man buying the Beatles

cast right

it's so easy to talk about what you

would do when you're not in that

position exactly yeah exactly so so you

and somebody offers you 900 billion

dollars and you're gonna say no to what

for headphones he sold the headphones

just to say nah you know I'm a guy

ownership ownership but you ain't doing

see here trip off this when you have

ownership of your [ __ ] you still have to

chase the money down you still have to

follow it you still have to do a bunch

of [ __ ] to get that money Minister yeah

administer you got to administer it for

the rest of your life so you're gonna

have to hire people to follow them

dollars now by the time that all comes

in it's just like getting a a upfront

settlement you know when they go okay

you just won the lottery you're gonna

get 50 million dollars or you could pick

up 30 million today pick up that 30

million you may not live yeah that's

right you know pick that up but people

will it's like I say it's so easy to

make a comment about what you do Justin

Bieber in them but you know hey

in that I want to ask you so in that bag

yeah that's real cause I'm selling it

[ __ ] going by this [ __ ]

but if you're smart he would take that

money of course and you can make that

triple and double absolutely faster than

it would come in through your catalog

yeah and the common the common person

doesn't know that you know what I mean

they don't understand what it takes to

make all that [ __ ] work but they just

know how to talk [ __ ] yeah that's it

they just know how to type they don't

even talk they type you know how the

[ __ ] can I sit back at home and have an

opinion about somebody picking up a half

a billion dollars oh they shouldn't have

done that shut the [ __ ] up you worry

about rich people you know what I'm

saying you worry about you and rich

I I think that it's a decision you make

can't wait to sell my catalog yeah yeah

what to know you got to be at least a

I live very comfortably and I'm nowhere

near a billionaire I don't need I I it

doesn't require that much money I don't

once you buy a house a nice house and a

enough and I I found that out that it

doesn't require what happens is after

you see with the super wealthy they

don't brag on what they have they brag

on what they give away right so now you

hit the other side of the slope that's

right so me and you are rich rich you

got a yacht I got one we got both so we

can't we can't impress each other that's

right I gave away 10 million this year

oh I gave away 40 million that's how

they break Bill Gates says his life goal

is to give away all his wealth it's a

whole nother game yeah that's the

craziest thing that's crazy so how do I

get rid of it it's his goal right if you

want to get around real bread go where

the philanthropists are go with you know

there's two places where there's extreme

amounts of money moving around it's not

Yachts it's not houses it's people

giving away money that's right other

places an arms show yeah [Laughter]

aircraft carriers and jets and wow yeah

not not a regular arm show yeah

yeah or go to Dubai where all the oil

money is no go to an arms show where you

got it where we got to go buy a certain

amount of missiles a certain amount of

jets yeah a certain yeah see that's that

that's a bug that's above my [ __ ] but

they're moving countries money they're

not that's not personal wealth that's

country's money so billions and billions

are moving back and forth you know I I

want to go back to something because

um I I was you know I was refreshing my

my [ __ ] on you which I know but

um I just I got a personal just question

so doing that Calvin Butts thing you

looked highly highly agitated like what

what how did you keep your cool doing

that that time because when a [ __ ] sit

across from the table from you and say

no I want to stop your money yeah that's

like a personal threat almost you know

Captain butts was a preacher so he was

basically on his own thing we were the

devil and we were messing up the world

yeah I don't know I was a little bit more

I don't know on edge I wasn't as cool as

I know absolutely yeah but yeah you're

much I was fighting for hip-hop yeah

it wasn't so much me but he was a clown

you know and and I knew that what we

were doing was just entertainment right

and it wasn't we none of us were

intentionally telling anybody that could

go out here and do anything yeah so I

just held my ground but I was so

seasoned in that yeah dealing with

Tipper Gore and dealing with different

people that would attack us I just

became one of the few people that they

would put out there like it's a nice

right because I could uh articulate what

was necessary to be said yeah which was

impressive because when I was looking at

it I was thinking about that I was like

damn this [ __ ] was young and he was

able to articulate you know and get his

point across in both worlds you know

because most rappers couldn't have done

that they they couldn't they they didn't

have the tools to to articulate with you

know these educated people you said in

the art of rap he said his job is to

tell Street Cats what's going on in government

government

and let the government people understand

how we think like be a translator so I

understand that role too I want to touch

something else about the Grammys um is

this whole thing trending with Willie D

and Scarface you know people were

telling me about that yeah I mean you've

been a solo artist your whole career you

know outside of Body Count

um but you know so face gets the call

you know he doesn't mention to Willie D

that that weekend that he's going to do

to great he's no he said he was going to

the Grammys but he didn't say he was

performing he goes to the Grammys now we

all know face God more than enough of

his own you know material to do face is

a beast one of the goats right

Willie D felt slighted he felt like yeah

you should have said something and on

top of that you did A Ghetto Boy song

right so I should have been there I mean

do you what is your take on that I'm

only asking because they they put it out

there both of my friends I'll say it

um we didn't pick our songs

okay Questlove picked the songs so they

sent me a tape of the songs like this is

where you come in Period there was no no

conversation some people did more bars

other but that's what you're gonna do

you're coming in right after that

Latifah comes in after you so you had no

you you didn't pick anything they just

said this is your part if you want to

show up and do the show they told you

what you was this is what we this is

where we got you slated you coming in

after Scarface I heard Public Enemy I

heard Rakim I was like oh [ __ ] I gotta

I'm in there now say no and that closes

up and Latifah will come right after you

see so I was like so it okay yeah so

that so he didn't have anything to do as

far as Willie D being there I cannot

speak on Scarface and why he didn't do

that but Willie D was only he was only

saying eight bars yeah yeah so Willie B

would have been standing there right you

know what I'm saying right so

look my homie right there my day one

came me I came to the Grammys I got one

ticket for Coco yeah it's a mess it's

just like you know I I said I said I'm

not going to invite anybody because I

will insult somebody yeah that's right

so I mean Scarface got on the plane did

his thing but that's a personal thing I

don't know why I hey you know I I can't

speak on your brothers but yeah I think

they'll still be friends oh yeah they're

good they're good really gonna be mad at

them ever but they good but it wasn't like

like

that's not how it went down they picked

the records and we just had to hit those

marks and it's funny though when you

know like there's a cue so it's a tape

and we're doing live vocals everybody's

doing live vocals so when the tape comes

in while he's saying uh uh mind playing

because if you miss it yeah your whole

it throws off everything yeah and it's

over and it's live TV yeah oh my God I

was on pins and needles I was like man I

can't mess this one up you still get

nervous before you perform absolutely uh

I I really believe if you don't get
