chapter 15 page 42.
I am the real Vine and my father is the gardener
gardener
he breaks off every branch in me that
does not bear fruit
and prunes every branch that does bear
fruit so that it will be clean and bear
more fruit
you have been made clean already by the
message I have spoken to you
remain in Union with me and I will
remain in Union with you
unless you remain in me you cannot bear
fruit just as a branch cannot bear fruit
unless it remains in the Vine
I am the vine you are the branches
whoever remains in me and I and him will
bear much fruit for you can do nothing
without me
whoever does not remain in me is thrown
out like a branch and dries up
such branches are gathered up and thrown
into the fire where they are burned
if you remain in me and my words remain
in you then you will ask for anything
you wish and you shall have it
this is how my father's glory is shown
by your bearing much fruit
in this way you become my disciples
I love you just as the father loves me
remain in my love
if you obey my commands you will remain
in my love in the same way that I have
obeyed my father's commands and remain
in his love
I have told you this so that my joy may
be in you and that your joy may be complete
complete
this is my commandment love one another
just as I have loved you
the greatest love a man can have for his
friends is to give his life for them
and you are my friends if you do what I command
command
I do not call you servants any longer
because a servant does not know what his
master is doing
instead I call you friends
because I have told you everything I
heard from my father you did not choose
me I chose you and appointed you to go
and bear much fruit the kind of fruit
that endures
and the father will give you whatever
you ask of him in my name
this then is what I command you
one of the reasons why Jesus was such a
good teacher was that he used visual aids
aids
he often took a simple object and just
used that to
make a very profound statement he would
take a little child and just sit the
child on his knee and say unless you
become like a little child you'll never
see the kingdom he could take a fig tree
and curse it and give a wonderful
picture of how he saw his people Israel
as those who produce nothing but leaves
just no fruit now he was always doing
this in his Parables and even in what he
said about himself let's just take one
example there are a few things more
ordinary and more simple than a door
a lump of wood unhinges with a handle
that opens and shuts you take every door
you see for granted you never think
about doors much do you and yet Jesus
just took a door and he said I am the door
door
and there's a picture a visual aid he
could paint pictures in your mind too
and when you read his teaching it's one
one picture after another
so that whether he had an overhead
projection a screen or not as we had
last Sunday morning he was always
painting pictures and in John 15 he
Paints the last picture in his teaching
it's the picture of a Vine it's a very
simple picture and if you lived in
Israel today and then
it would be a common ordinary picture
Vines are everywhere The Working Man
staple diet consists of bread and wine
sandwiches and beer you might say bread
and wine that's the simple diet of The
Working Man in the Middle East and The
Ravines everywhere growing on the
hillsides catching the Sun
and so this was a very ordinary thing
and yet there may be a better reason
than that why Jesus used the picture of
the vine at this stage in teaching the
disciples they had finished the last
supper on the top of the hill of Zion
they were going over the hill and down
to the valley of Kidron and The Garden
of Gethsemane they had already left the
upper room at the end of chapter 14 rise
let us be going
and to walk from the upper room from the
city of Jerusalem down to Kidron they
would have to go past the main gates
into the temple and on those main gates
there were two very large clusters of
grapes hanging from a large vine very
large the clusters of grapes were six
feet long
but of course they weren't real grapes
they were made of pure gold
and anybody who was really grateful to
God for some blessing would ask
permission to provide a Golden Grape for
the golden vine on the gates of the
temple it was a magnificent sight
and going through the dark streets that
night between the last supper and The
Garden of Gethsemane they would walk
right past and maybe Those Grapes were
glinting in the Moonlight
and they looked at this wonderful golden
Vine which was a symbol of Israel
it's used on all their tourist brochures
today you go to the Israel tourist
office in London and you'll find that
again and again the little tour is
simple our two men carrying a long Pole
from which are hanging gigantic clusters
of grapes
that symbol goes way back to the Old
Testament way back into the early part
of their history where the children of
Israel under Moses were just outside the
promised land and Moses sent spies in
and they came to a valley in the
promised land where there were some
luscious grapes and they called it the
valley of ashkol and Ash colors Hebrew
for clusters and they pick clusters of
grapes and they came back bearing these
clusters of grapes and they said it's a
marvelous land you should see the grapes
look at them we've brought them back
it's a marvelous land but there are big
people in there there are giants in there
there
when finally they did come in they found
it was a land of Vineyards of lovely
juicy grapes and so it became the symbol
it went on to their coins in the time of
The Maccabees and it went onto their
Temple Gates and it's still the symbol
of Israel The Grapes the Vine
and Jesus looking at that great Temple
Gate and thinking of the vineyard of
Israel says I'm the real Vine
I'm the one who's going to give God the
grapes he wants
everybody else is a false Vine they fail
to produce the fruit but I'm the real
one and it's in me that God The Gardener
will be able to pick the grapes that
he's been looking for for so long it's
fine to have a big Golden Gate with a a
symbolic cluster of grapes on it but God
is Not benefited by those Gates
it's fine to have a lovely garden and
have lovely juicy grapes in it but
that's not the kind of grapes God wanted
it's not the fruit he looked for
for hundreds of years God had planted
his people in that spot and he looked to
them for justice and for caring and for
righteousness and he didn't just not got it
it
that's why they've suffered
that's why they've been out of their
land for two thousand years that's why
they lost it again and again because God
said look I planted you there to be a
Vineyard to give me fruit
and I've never had that fruit
so out you go I'll let my Vineyard go barren
barren
I let it be trampled on and overgrown
because what's the point of going on
gardening if you don't get anything from
the garden
well now that's the background and Jesus
Takes this picture and he says I'm the
real Vine if you want to give God fruit
you will need to remain in me that's the
lesson and there are two profound
lessons he draws from this picture
number one your union with Christ is the
decisive factors to whether God gets
what he wants from your life
whether you're going to be a good Garden
a good Vine
good branch
and the second lesson is your Unity with Christians
Christians
the branches are not only to be rightly
related to the vine but rightly related
to each other and both of these things
come straight from the Horticultural
experience of anybody who's kept a Vineyard
Vineyard
thing I have never done I did have a
vine when I first moved to Guildford but
it died on me from lack of attention
but there are many many things to learn
from the vine it needs more attention
than almost any other plant
it needs an awful lot of care from the gardener
gardener
and I'm afraid the one Tula Gardener
needs are the two tools he needs a hoe
and a knife
the hoe keeps the ground clear of all
other things no other plants must grow
near and you'll find that in The
Vineyards of the Middle East the soil
has not a weed in it it's always freshly
broken up they hoe and hoe around the
plant but the other tool that the
gardener needs even more important is a
sharp knife
and he has to use that sharp knife on
the vine all the time if he's really
going to get the fruit that he wants and
here is a profound lesson that if God
himself is to get from us what he needs
he's going to have to use the knife on
us all the time
it is a disturbing and challenging
thought but it is a surgeon's knife
it is to make us healthy
it is to make us able to produce the
fruit that he wants a knife
and someone has said that the The
Gardener is never so close to the vine
as when he's using the knife on it
and that's why God keeps close to us and
chastises us and uses the knife harness
now there are two things that Jesus says
here one is negative one is positive the
negative is you will need to be pruned
by The Gardener by God
that's negative that's cutting back
cutting out taking something away
and then the positive side is you will
be productive in the Vine
pruned by the vine dresser productive in
the vine both are needed you can't be
productive unless you pruned and pruning
by itself doesn't produce the fruit it
needs to be followed by this close
relationship in the vine so here's the
negative and the positive side of living
a fruitful Christian Life number one to
be willing to be pruned who likes being
cut down to size
I don't and you don't it's an
uncomfortable business when God Cuts you down
down
cut something out
now there are two sorts of pruning in
relation to a Vine because there are two
sorts of branches in a Vine I'm told
there are some branches that produce
lots of leaves but never produce fruit
and they must be rigidly cut right out
they are no use they are a handicapped
to the plant they will draw from the
plant but give nothing back in return
they are wasteful not only not useful
they are actually wasteful of sap in the
vine and therefore they are cut out so
that nothing is wasted
that's one sort of branch
and we're going to return to this later
the solemn thought that if I don't
produce any fruit for God at all
then God says I'm not only useless I'm a
positive handicap and therefore I must go
go
because I'm a handicapped to the total
work of the Vine
it's not just that you can sit in in a
church and receive and receive and
receive and give nothing it is that in
being there and in just receiving and
not giving you are a positive handicap
to the other branches
and so God The Gardener says if there's
no fruit at all you must come out you're
a handicap to the production of my Vineyard
Vineyard
but it is with the other sort of plan
that we are mainly concerned here those
who produce fruit but not very much
those who have a little sign that they
are in Christ but not much those who do
a little for God now and again but not
much what does God do to those
in his love and tenderness he cuts them down
down
Cuts them back
this is done regularly in Palestine
between about December and February
during those three months and if you go
there in that period you'll see the
vines they're just little bleeding
stumps stuck in the ground they look
Dreadful they look dead they look murdered
murdered
but the vine dressers had to do that
cut them right down to almost nothing
they look terrible
I was once told that if you want to get
your roses pruned get one of your
enemies to do it
because it goes against your grains so
much to cut them back that you don't do
it enough but an enemy will really cut
them down and then you'll have lovely
roses it's even more true of the vine
it's got to be cut right back
it's got to be murdered if it's going to
produce real good fruit
and God is prepared to do that
isn't that an amazing love
if you're prepared to cut someone down
to help them to be what they ought to be
you really must love them you really must
well now how does he do that Jesus says
using the same word prune you have
already been pruned through the word
that I have spoken to you and this is
God's Supreme method of cutting us down
speaking to us through the words of
Jesus his commands cut us down to size
don't you find that I find it when I'm
preparing sermons and I'm sure you must
find it when you're listening to them
God's word Cuts you down again and again
and again
it just slices clean through it's it's
sharper than any two-edged sword and it
cuts deep and it hurts and you think am
I really like that
and it finds you out and that's how he
prunes and his word comes sharp and cuts
clean and says cutting you down and
cutting you back
it causes us to suffer yes but whom the
Lord loves he chastises I believe in purgatory
purgatory
it's a doctrine that I find in the Bible
but I don't find it applied to the next
life I only find it applied to this life
because Purgatory means purging pruning
those who teach that we need pruning
after this life are saying that which is
not in the scripture
but those who say you need to be purged
or pruned in this life are thoroughly
scriptural and therefore Jesus taught purgatory
purgatory
he taught pledging he taught pruning but
in this life
and he said turning to the positive side
that not only do we need pruning we need
to have a vital relationship with him
the only function of the branch in a
Vine is to connect up the stem and the fruit
fruit
it's the link it has no other function whatever
whatever
it's the link between the stock and the
fruit to transfer from the stock all the
sap that is rising and to take it along
through itself into Fruit that's all its
purpose is
and that's all your purposes and all
mine is just to be the link between
Christ and the fruit
now then Jesus makes two profound
statements about the branch of a Vine
number one it is Barren by itself
now have you ever looked at Divine go to
Hampton Court and see that one whose
roots are very near the river but it
then travels what 200 feet through the
greenhouse marvelous Vine one of the
finest in this country look at the
branch it looks dead doesn't it twisted
and dead all flaky in its bark
do you know that you can take a cutting
from a branch of a Vine and blend it and
it will grow but it will only produce leaves
leaves
won't produce fruit
the branch of itself doesn't have the
capability of producing fruit it must be
in a Vine stock and then the sap comes
and somehow in some amazing Way Fruit
grows it doesn't have the capacity
within itself to produce fruit no more
have we without me said Jesus you can do nothing
nothing
now when he says nothing his meaning of
course spiritual fruitfulness you can
drive a car without Jesus you can have a
baby without Jesus you can have a
reasonably happy life without Jesus
you can do all kinds of things without
Jesus you can go to the Moon without Jesus
Jesus
but you can't ever do anything for God
The Gardener gets nothing out of all this
this
The God Who made it all receives no
fruit and why does a gardener have a
Vineyard anyway that he may have fruit
and so without me you can do nothing for
God nothing
another thing about the vine is this
that the branches are useless for any
other purpose
they are wood
but you try and use that word for
anything you can't use it as a stake
it's too twisted and bendy you can't use
it for firewood it doesn't burn well you
can't use it for furniture because you
can't sew it up and Jesus is a carpenter
knew that the branch of a Vine is no use
at all by itself
it might produce leaves as a cutting but
that's all show
but it can't do anything useful by itself
itself
the wood is as useless as you ever saw
you never saw any furniture made out of
Vinewood did you
if you study the vine you'll see why but
Jesus says if you really are deeply
attached to me
and in continuous contact with me then
you're useful you'll do something with
your life it's such a simple lesson and
the lesson is this one cares not how
real was your contact with Christ 20
years ago it is your contact with him
today that decides how fruitful you are
you may have a fine testimony of your
conversion but it's whether you have
kept up the communion it's whether you
are always in touch with him whether you
remain in him whether you abide in him
make your home in him it's the same word
as the word mentions in chapter 14 the
Abiding Place in heaven for men the
Abiding Place on Earth for the Lord you
remember we talked about it last week
Jesus is now saying unless you make your
home in me
and live in me and stay in me and stay
with me and keep in contact with me the
whole time unless you do that then the
branch will just go brittle and dry
think of the positive side
if we do abide in him look at the things
that follow fruitful lives is one at
glorified God is another a joy that is
complete is a third prayer that is
answered is a fourth promise after
promise comes out now if you remain in
contact with me all these other things
will follow
now at this point I want to deal with a
question that some of you have already
asked me and I want to deal with it
quite honestly it says that if a branch
does not abide in Jesus it is cut out
thrown out Withers and is burned and
people have asked me does that honestly
mean that a Christian who has been in Christ
Christ
can in fact get so out of touch with
Christ that they can be eternally lost
and go to hell
that's putting the question pretty
bluntly and I'm going to look at it very
squarely and honestly
there are two possible answers to that
question I'm going to give you both and
then tell you which one I feel is the
one that commends itself to me most but
firstly there are many Christians who do
believe that what Jesus is saying here
is that if a branch produces no fruit at
all it indicates that that person is has
never been a real Christian at all
that they are simply a professing
Christian a nominal member of the church
that they are physically or visibly
connected to Christ but not spiritually
and that when they are finally cast out
into the fire it is simply because they
are literally an unbeliever and have
never been in Christ now that certainly
avoids the problem of the text
and it avoids a lot of other problems
contradicting other parts of scripture I
can only say that quite frankly I can't
just see that
it does seem to me that our Lord is
talking to branches who have been in the
vine and not remained
he doesn't say the branches that have
never been in the vine but those who
have been in but didn't stay in and it
is of them that he says these solemn
words they are cast out in weather and a
burn in the fire
the alternative explanation is this and
this is the one that seems to me to fit best
best
he does not talk about the gardener in
this verse
he simply States it as a fact that branches
branches
that are cut out
are discarded as worse than useless they
clutter up the ground and they're taken away
away
and literally he says and they gather
them and throw them in the fire in the
authorized version and Men gather them
and throw them away
doesn't say God does he says men do
and I believe that what he means is this
that a Christian who produces no fruit
is not only useless for God but will be
regarded as useless by men
and discarded as of any value and testimony
testimony
this is what Paul was afraid of when he
says in 1 Corinthians 9 lest having
preached to others I myself should be
Cast Away and people say do does he mean
that he could be lost eternally no the
word means disqualified
put out of the running disqualified from
the race
it means discarded still around but no
use to anybody anymore
and Men discard
and I believe that Jesus is saying very solemnly
solemnly
that if you do not remain in me men will
treat you as worthless and useless and
they do
a Christian not producing fruit
is despised by men
God not only finds them useless but men
regard them as useless too and so men
discard them men treat them as of no
value as of no account and I believe
that is what God is saying because he's
talking about what happens in this life
he's talking about the vine now he's
talking about the branches now and it is
possible for a person who in their youth
was a keen Christian showing much
fruitfulness walking with the Lord
winning other converts it is possible
for them to spend the last 30 years of
their life in a fruitless way
it's carded out of office in the church
out of Christian service just no longer
in the center of things they've been a
branch that didn't remain in Christ now
God has not sent them to eternal lastness
lastness
but alas their life is discarded it is
no longer useful
that can happen to many middle-aged and
older Christians who don't keep the
contact with Jesus they had when they
first came to know him
but if we do keep the contact what kind
of fruit do we result
do we produce
again I'm afraid Scholars are divided
over this and I'm going to say that the
two main views that I've heard I believe
both are true
I believe that it is fruit for God and
fruit for men it is the fruit of
sanctification first the fruit of
Holiness the fruit of the spirit love
joy and peace whenever you find the word
fruit used in the Bible in the New
Testament you find it invariably as the
fruit of righteousness
love and joy are both mentioned in this
passage that my love may remain in you
that your joy may be complete the fruit
of the spirit is sanctification first
but second that will inevitably produce
the fruit
of Christian service in winning others
you see within every grape there is a pip
pip
or there should be
and within that pip
all the powers of reproduction of the
vine have been put
in that pip
so that the fruit is not only Pleasant
to eat
to The Gardener who grew it
it is also capable of reproducing itself
and these are the two kinds of fruit
that God wants from us not only a fruit
that he enjoys eating that is tasty to
himself lives that he can taste and see
that they are good
but he also wants lives that are capable
of reproducing themselves
in others and winning others so I
believe it's both kinds of fruit I'm not
going to take sides on this one both
kinds of fruit the inward fruit of
righteousness that will lead to the
outward fruit of reproduction
the inward fruit of godliness
that will be sweet for God's taste
leading to the reproduction that will
lead to more branches for Christ to see
bearing fruit in his Vineyard so much
then for the first part of this morning's
morning's
talk about the vine and about the
branches pruned by the vine dresser
productive in the Vine
now at this point
and the second half of this morning's is
more brief but from verse 12 onwards
there is a profound and important truth
it is a common but mistaken assumption
among many Christians and I come across
it regularly
that provided my relationship with
Christ is all right everything else will
be all right
it is not true it does not follow
you may be abiding in the vine you may
be in full contact with Christ you may
be right in the stock and the sap may be flowing
flowing
and yet
you may be in a wrong relationship with Christians
Christians
surely that's not possible but it is or
else Christ would never have bothered to
tell us verses 12 to 17.
if it follows that if I'm right with
Christ everything else will be right
then the only thing he needs to tell me
is to remain in him he would never need
to tell me to love one another
but it is a less tragically possible for
a man to love Christ
and yet not to love his fellow Christians
Christians
I heard it said of one Saint and I just
passed this on as a tragic comment but a
searching one
that he loved Christ so much that he had
go back to Hampton Court go and see the
vines you know what the branches do they
are all in the Vine
they are bearing fruit but you know what
they're doing they're doing this to each
other have you seen that in a Vine
they're getting all tangled with each
other and all crossed with each other
and if that vine is going to Bear proper
fruit and and face the sun properly
you'll find that a True Vine dresser
will train the branches
you put them in line with each other
you'll train them along
you go and look at Harold's apple trees
in his garden you'll see some lovely
training of branches so that each branch
is open to the Sun not hiding any other
Branch from the Sun you see the branches
even if they are bearing fruit and even
if they're in the vine can get all
twisted with each other
and so Jesus says you not only need to
remain in me you need to love one another
another
if you're going to Bear much fruit and
if your fruit is going to endure
and remain
then you've got to get untangled with
each other too and love one another
now the kind of love that he's meaning
is a positive relationship
on holiday we went into one or two
churches in Wales and we were amused to
see the old style of pews I just tried
to imagine them in this building
each one a horse box you know the kind
of thing with a sort of wooden wall up
to about here and a little door to go in
and you got in and the only person you
could see when you got inside was the
vicar up in his little Hayloft in the
Pulpit you've seen churches like that
What a symbol that is
what a design for a building so that
each little group could come into church
and sit in its own little box separate
from each other
well we may find it amusing now but you
know you can erect a mental box around
you in a pew
you can come into a church and you've
got a little box all around you don't
come into my box this is my box
and I'm just here to worship God I can
see up but I'm glad I can't see out no that's
that's
that's the vine getting all twisted up again
again
getting all tangled
Jesus says my love is a love that says
my life is not mine it belongs to my brethren
brethren
it belongs to other people if they need
me then my life is theirs even to the
point of death
one of the books that I read some time
ago which is a lovely book to read do
get it Miracle On the River choir how
many of you have read that book not
Bridge on the River choir Miracle On the
River quiet you have read it yes
do you remember how in a Japanese
prisoner of war camp
a weak ill man
was going to be executed for something
and how are Christians step forward and
and took the man's place
and was executed by the Japanese
greater love hath no man than this
that's the very limit to which you were
to go but there are a lot of steps to
that limit just to go out of your way to
help someone when you'd planned an
evening in and you hear of someone in
need all right then go out and see them
that's to lay down your life
you see your life is made up of a lot of
things that you enjoy doing you've got
your life planned all out and you know
what you want to do next Tuesday next
Wednesday next Thursday but greater love
hath no man than this that a man lay
down his life and say all right if
somebody else needs that
my plans go
it's a very practical thing
and it's that kind of love costly love
to the death
cost a love that is prepared to say my
life is yours that is going to keep the
branches in the right relationship with
each other
in other words those who only remain in
Christ but who are not concerned about
other branches their life is terribly
self-centered they're saying I'm drawing
my life from Christ it's my spiritual
life that's the most important you can
be selfish even in cultivating your
spiritual life Jesus is saying you'll be
concerned about the life of the other branches
branches
remain in me but be concerned about them
love them let the sap of my love flow to
them through you
the metaphor begins to break down at
numerous points but it's still there
secondly not only a costly love but a
trusting love
a trusting love
a love that is prepared to confide in people
people
now that's true love if you really love
someone you'll tell them what's on your heart
heart
if you really love someone you'll share
things with them if you really love
someone you'll share your plans with them
them
of course and Jesus said I don't call
you servants I could do
I chose you I'm the master I could call
you servants but I don't you're my
friends I've told you everything I'm
going to do I've shared things with you
not only a life that's prepared to lay
itself down but a life that is prepared
to share
and to talk together
Jesus now reminds them that the branches
don't choose to be in the vine the vine
produces the branches terribly important
to realize this if a man goes to hell it
is his own responsibility and his own
decision alone
but if a man goes to heaven it's because
the Lord chose him
round the doctrine of predestination
it's there in scripture I just thank God
for it oh God that you chose me
I can't understand it I Stand All Amazed
at the doctrine of predestination but
Jesus says the one thing that we need to
remember with predestination in the
middle of the word predestination is the
word destiny
and if you forget the destiny then the
predestination will become distorted and
false and will be an offense we are
predestined to a destiny and that
Destiny is that we should bear much fruit
fruit
every time the Bible mentions
predestination it always goes on to
mention the destiny we have been chosen
elected what for
to be like the firstborn
to be made like unto Jesus that's our
destiny and predestination is always to
a destiny so we're back again to the
vine and Jesus says all this is to
fulfill the Destiny for which I chose
you why do you think you're in the vine
why do you think I planted you and me
why do you think you are my disciples
that you may bear much fruit
and that your fruit may endure
lost for words now
I'll have to start again grapes go bad
easily that's putting it simply they
ferment very quickly awfully difficult
to keep our grapes
you can dry them until they become
raisins and they keep them or you can
let them ferment and let them become
wine but to keep them as enduring fruit
they are the least enduring fruit
but there's been a progression of
thought and you must have noticed this
you've heard sermons preached on it fruit
fruit
more fruit
much fruit
endearing fruit
and it seems as if the one thing that
will make our fruit endure is not our
remaining in Christ but our remaining in
Union with one another
that's what preserves the fruit
the fruit is likely to go bad in a
situation in which Christians are not
loving one another the fruit will not
endure it will go bad it will ferment
but where Christians are as branches
lined up with one another parallel
within one another reaching out to the
sun together not hiding in each other's
shadows or blocking each other's light
but as we're lined up to the sunshine of
God's love together and as we love one
another the fruit will last
it will ripen and endure
and then Jesus says you've got all you
need Within Me
all the resources you need to produce
fruit are there if you ask anything in
my name you can have it draw from me all
that you need for your love for one another
another
and it's interesting that the promise
that whatever you wish you can have the
word you is plural
it's not a promise to a Christian it's a
promise to the vine it's a promise to
the branches who together can say Lord
we wish this
and because they are in mutual love they
can have what they want
so that you notice that answered prayer
is mentioned twice in chapter 15 once
under the exhortation to remain in
Christ once under the exhortation to
love one another so here's yet another
secret of answered prayer to be in
constant communion with Christ and in
constant communion with Christians then
you can expect your prayers to be answered
answered
so we must finish
and I finish where I began and where I
continued what's the whole point of it
all the point is really for the gardener
it's that the gardener should have some grapes
grapes
some fruit what is the point of our
service this morning that God should
have something from us
we are his garden his Vineyard
may he have from us what he desires
father we really do want to be fruitful
we want to be true branches
we often ask him to abide with us but
he wants to abide in US
and he's told us to abide in him and
this we would seek to do
help us then we pray
through hearing the word of his command
and allowing the sharp edge of that word
to cut deep and prune us
may we bear more much endearing fruit to
