in order to find any point it's just
like crossing the street
because a point is always x first y second
second
but one of my students used to say it's
easy you just start in the middle
but when you cross the street you gotta
look left or right first
then you can go up or down second
brilliant let's copy that down
and this is how we'll find any point
we'll just always start in the middle
that's called the origin
now in our case we're gonna go to the
right three so the first number x is three
three
then we're gonna go down two
so the y value negative two
and that is the point
we're done
this could be called a couple different
things ordered pair coordinate point but
they all mean the same thing
and it can represent the location of
just about anything
but probably a starbucks that just moved
into your city
we're gonna play a little game here
let's pretend that these are four
different taco bells
and our house is in the middle which
one's closest
well the first one both numbers are
positive so it's to the right and up
let's do it to the right three
up one right there
okay not too far
the next one to the right two
and then down four
so a little bit further away
the next two they're both negative to
start so they're going to be to the left
the orange one left two but then
positive so up three and that final one
left one down two
right there
and that is the winning taco bell
we'll go ahead and grab our faves the
double decker taco nacho cheese chalupa
all the things
notice if we drive there it's only one
two three blocks away
but that purple one one two three four
three new cell towers are added to our city
city
maybe to freak us out maybe to give us
better coverage
what are the locations of these three points
points
feel free to pause if you want to try
this one on your own
we'll start with that green point there
that one four to the right so x is four
but it doesn't go up or down so the y zero
zero
the blue one that's not bad that's just
left three negative three
then up to positive
and the purple one
left so negative and down also negative
this data represents tomato plant growth
on earth and in space
but the data for space seems pretty favorable
favorable
so that's encouraging for our mission to
mars despite the radiation
plot the points for growth on earth for
week two and four
so week two we see as a height of 5.2
we'll go to the right two
we'll go up five but point two just to
smidge more so right there
week four same idea right four but that
one up 14.6
let's just hit 14 to start
14.5 is right in the middle so 0.6 right
above that
but notice it was easier to find the
weak first the height second
in other words x first y second
that's the reason we did it that way for
all of these
if you're curious how fast did the plant
grow from here to here
that would be represented by the slope
so if that's something you're interested
in keep an eye out for that video
good luck with these you got these let
me know what issues you run into
they're not paying me but make it to
your nearest taco bell as soon as possible
possible
