1:50 is going to set people free
1:54 i am so fired up to preach you today i'm
1:56 really really passionate
1:57 i want to apologize in advance because i
2:00 know this topic is literally going to
2:02 speak
2:02 straight to thousands of people that are
2:04 hearing this talk this morning
2:06 i really believe this is going to be a
2:08 life-changing day for so so many people
2:10 and if i at any stage appear to be
2:13 passionate
2:14 fired up slash angry
2:18 i just want you to know i am not mad at
2:20 you i empathize with everybody who's
2:22 going to be impacted by this but i am
2:24 very mad at every demon in hell that is
2:28 trying to rip off our
2:29 generation and i'm declaring over you
2:32 this
2:32 is your freedom day come on if you
2:36 believe that give god some praise right
2:38 now
2:38 it's freedom day i want to share with
2:42 you today around the topic
2:44 decline debt decline
2:48 debt come on tap somebody next you tell
2:51 them decline dead
2:52 decline dead we all know what it's like
2:55 to go to that
2:56 fpos machine put the card in and have
2:58 that little
2:59 declined come up on the screen come on
3:02 don't look at me like you've
3:04 never had it your wife changed all the
3:06 money to her account
3:08 that never happens to me slash happened
3:11 to me yesterday
3:14 but we are not going to get declined by
3:16 an fbos machine we are going to say
3:19 declined to the spirit of debt
3:22 that is trying to enslave our generation
3:25 this is freedom day in proverbs chapter
3:29 22 verse 7 is our main verse for the day
3:31 say it out loud it's going to be on your
3:33 screen
3:33 say it out loud with me everybody one
3:35 two three the borrower
3:37 is the slave of the lender now say it
3:40 again like you mean it
3:41 the borrower is the slave of the lender
3:44 one more time
3:45 the borrower is the slave
3:48 of the lender i started working full
3:51 time in christian ministry when i was 19
3:53 years old for four years i was a
3:56 voluntary worker which basically means
3:58 i worked nights and mornings to earn
4:01 money
4:01 so that i could then do my job for free
4:04 i married jillian during the fourth year
4:06 that i was a voluntary worker
4:08 just seven days after my 23rd birthday
4:11 at the end of that year eight months
4:13 after we'd been married
4:15 my pastor finally gave me a full-time
4:17 job as his youth pastor
4:19 and i started on staff with a salary
4:22 for the very first time it was an
4:24 amazing experience
4:26 after four years of believing god for
4:28 every cent
4:29 to suddenly having every fortnight money
4:32 miraculously turning up in my bank
4:33 account
4:34 now that i had a salary somebody said to
4:36 me did you know that as a pastor you can
4:38 lease a car
4:40 and your lease will be fbt free so i
4:42 adjusted my salary
4:44 and i leased a car now that i was
4:46 earning a salary
4:47 it's like the bank miraculously knew
4:50 they sent me a free
4:51 credit card in the mail how kind is that
4:54 they sent me a free credit card in the
4:57 mail like they miraculously knew
5:00 so now i had a nice car and a credit
5:02 card but everything in our home was
5:04 either a wedding gift
5:05 or from an op shop anybody ever been
5:07 there and so jillian
5:09 was started to get this never have this
5:11 today but she got a married person
5:13 student allowance
5:14 she just started her four-year
5:16 university degree so she had
5:18 50 bucks a week i think that the
5:19 government gave us
5:21 for her a book as a married person's
5:24 student
5:25 allowance so we went down to freedom
5:27 furniture who was so
5:28 kind to give us a lounge free
5:31 lounge suite interest free
5:35 isn't that nice of them so kind
5:38 so now we had a salary a nice car
5:42 a credit card a lounge suite
5:46 life was looking so good
5:49 but it was not good nine months into
5:53 this journey the credit card
5:54 was slowly creeping south as it was no
5:58 longer getting paid off
5:59 every month after four years of trusting
6:02 god for everything
6:04 i was adjusting to the fact that it's
6:06 one thing to pray the food in because
6:08 you need it
6:09 a totally different thing to spend it
6:11 and then hope that god's going to pay
6:13 the credit card off
6:15 the salary that i had been earning was
6:17 now
6:18 coming in and going out like it was just
6:21 bouncing like it hit the account and
6:24 then it was gone
6:25 on lease payments and lounge suite
6:27 payments and
6:28 paying back credit card payments and so
6:31 i sat down
6:32 and i prepared this magical thing maybe
6:34 you've heard of it it's called
6:35 a budget a budget
6:38 that's a word from god for at least a
6:40 thousand people here in the store
6:43 i worked out how much was coming in
6:45 which was very defined
6:47 i would how much was going out and what
6:50 was it going back
6:51 out on i wish i had done this so much
6:54 earlier
6:54 i started to ask myself questions like
6:56 how much is that car costing me
6:58 not just a month but a year how much is
7:01 that lounge suite costing me
7:02 why am i spending money on a credit card
7:05 when i haven't
7:06 budgeted the money to pay it back i ran
7:09 the numbers i looked at them
7:11 and in a moment i realized the folly
7:14 of the decisions that i had made then
7:17 came the toughest thing
7:18 i've got to talk to jillian sat down
7:21 with my wife and began to chat and said
7:23 basically honey we have turned our bank
7:25 account into a trampoline
7:27 this is what's happening the money is
7:29 coming in and it's just going straight
7:30 back
7:31 out it's like kaboying with incredible
7:34 bounce
7:35 the money is here the money is gone here
7:38 are the numbers
7:39 we have a significant problem that is
7:42 going to require a drastic and painful
7:45 solution a significant problem
7:48 that's going to require a drastic and
7:50 painful
7:51 solution this is what we need to do baby
7:54 we need to sell the leased car we're
7:56 going to get rid of the credit card
7:58 and we need to never make these
8:00 decisions again
8:02 these mistakes these failures again
8:06 so a painful journey began i sold
8:09 the least car back to the car yard
8:12 at a loss i no longer had a car and i
8:15 had debt to pay
8:16 on the car that i had sold but i can
8:19 still remember walking out of that
8:20 dealership in newmarket
8:22 walking back out and the feeling of
8:25 freedom
8:26 the rush of faith it was like my
8:29 spirit came alive i had a problem that
8:32 was solvable
8:34 we chopped up the credit cards had a
8:36 little ceremony in our kitchen and
8:38 chopped up
8:38 those credit cards we couldn't close it
8:41 straight away because there was debt
8:42 still to be paid
8:43 but we at least prevented ourselves from
8:45 using it again
8:47 i borrowed a car and then began to save
8:50 money for a car we could afford to pay
8:52 cash for we went from lease payments and
8:55 credit cards
8:56 and saving for you know to now we were
8:58 saving for a house and
9:00 saving for a car and paying off the
9:03 credit card payments
9:04 for the next few years we drove a car
9:07 that was so
9:08 bad i think you could call it a dunga
9:10 anybody
9:11 familiar with that one a piece of junk
9:14 in greek they called junk c-r-a-p i
9:17 we drove a piece of junk there was
9:20 nothing desirable
9:22 about it nobody ever commented about it
9:25 no one ever pulled up beside you in the
9:26 church car park going whoa
9:28 nice ride never happened not once
9:32 at all but we were now moving in
9:35 the right direction man the truth is
9:39 friends that we were free
9:41 we began to make slow steady progress in
9:44 the right direction
9:45 god breathed on our steps eventually all
9:49 our debt was gone
9:50 and we began to save and the truth is
9:53 that as painful of that as that journey
9:55 was without any shadow of a doubt
9:58 it is the best thing that has ever
10:01 happened to me financially in my life
10:03 that
10:04 journey of learning to decline debt
10:07 literally scarred me for life
10:10 we have never borrowed money for a car
10:12 again we have
10:13 never had a personal credit card again
10:16 we never have and we never
10:18 will use afterpay it was
10:21 ugly it was embarrassing it was painful
10:24 it was slow but declining debt
10:28 and learning the lessons made us wise
10:32 and it changed our lives forever it set
10:35 us up on a positive direction for our
10:37 future
10:38 allowed us to one day many many years
10:40 ago to own
10:41 our first home taught us to be faithful
10:44 stewards over what god
10:45 had entrusted to us it broke the bondage
10:48 of debt
10:50 that is trying to enslave our generation
10:53 and i want to return to our verse again
10:55 today proverbs
10:56 22 7 the borrower is the slave
11:00 of the lender that is powerful language
11:03 that's got to be one of the most
11:04 confronting verses in the bible
11:06 the borrower is the slave
11:10 the borrower is tied to the lender
11:14 bound to the lender i am chained
11:17 to where i have been when i am in debt
11:21 my choices yesterday are creating
11:23 bondage
11:24 in my today when i have debt the
11:27 borrower
11:28 is slave to the lender team
11:31 let's be abundantly clear god does not
11:34 want his people to
11:36 ever be bound to where they have been
11:40 if grace teaches us anything it is that
11:43 the heart of god is to
11:44 free us so that we live free in today
11:48 and then to move forward into our
11:50 tomorrow
11:51 what's the will of god deuteronomy 15 6
11:54 you will lend to many nations and you
11:57 will borrow from none
11:59 and in the culture in which we live
12:01 you've got a
12:02 thousand voices rationalizing debt
12:06 we have got a crazy culture in this
12:09 arena called debt
12:10 but debt shouldn't be trivialized debt
12:12 shouldn't be willingly
12:13 accepted having debt means you're trying
12:16 to move into tomorrow while you're still
12:18 paying for yesterday
12:22 it means you're trying to move into
12:24 tomorrow we're still paying for
12:25 yesterday
12:26 debt means yesterday's choices are
12:29 deciding today's options
12:31 debt derails financial progress
12:35 and we learned yesterday that pro last
12:38 week sorry
12:39 that progress is slow
12:43 there is a growing bondage in our world
12:45 today as a church we encounter it
12:47 all the time we are counseling and
12:49 helping people supporting people
12:51 with a growing bondage in our world
12:54 today
12:55 the destructive bondage of debt we've
12:58 got all kinds of debt
12:59 we've got vehicle debt personal debt
13:01 credit card debt
13:02 high purchase debt after paid debt
13:05 student debt
13:06 and you know what they all have in
13:07 common they're all
13:09 debt john
13:12 john isn't there good debt and bad debt
13:15 is that then the truth isn't there good
13:17 debt and bad debt
13:19 well the bible doesn't say that the good
13:22 borrower
13:23 is not slave to the lender it says the
13:26 borrower is slave
13:27 to the lender and i don't know about you
13:29 i don't think any slavery is good
13:32 slavery i would be willing to concede
13:35 that there is avoidable and unavoidable
13:37 debt
13:39 and we when we think about it like that
13:41 we can think about it in a good term but
13:43 when we think about unavoidable debt
13:45 there are really only three the debt you
13:47 incurred to purchase your home
13:49 any unavoidable debt you need to get the
13:52 education you need to get a job
13:54 the key word being unavoidable debt
13:57 not just i want a new wardrobe kind of
14:00 debt
14:01 the debt you need to start a company but
14:03 even this don't ever
14:04 borrow money to start a company without
14:07 wise counsel and tight accountability
14:10 and beyond those three forms of debt i
14:12 want to strongly encourage
14:14 everybody here in this message today to
14:17 rethink
14:18 every form of debt to do all you can to
14:22 avoid debt at all costs
14:26 the pun on words at all costs boom
14:30 avoid vehicle debt student living cost
14:33 debt
14:34 credit card debt engagement ring debt
14:37 wedding debt holiday debt after pay debt
14:41 do all you can to never be in debt
14:45 drive yeah come on give god some praise
14:50 drive a piece of junk car and drive that
14:54 car with
14:55 swagger yes
14:58 this car is seven different colors
15:02 but i have no debt on this car and that
15:05 gives me
15:06 some attitude
15:09 work hard while you're at university to
15:12 avoid incurring
15:13 maximum debt don't have a credit card
15:16 holiday at home if you have to
15:20 don't pay don't buy anything
15:23 you can't pay cash for avoid
15:27 debt the borrower is slave to the lender
15:31 yesterday is limiting today and
15:33 preventing tomorrow
15:35 when you are in debt we have been
15:38 bombarded with messages all
15:40 day every day offering us debt
15:42 everywhere we go have you noticed that
15:45 i mean it is crazy i drove to the arise
15:47 center today
15:48 and in driving the simple stretch i
15:51 think from memory
15:52 it is 3.6 kilometers from the naronga
15:55 gorge
15:56 to petoni and in 3.6 kilometers
15:59 there are three billboards i want to
16:01 show you photos of two of them
16:03 throw the first one up on the screen
16:04 right now here it is
16:07 [Laughter]
16:09 stop paying money to use money after pay
16:13 okay put the camera back on me
16:17 stop paying money to use money you're
16:20 using your money making
16:22 their money when you use afterpay
16:26 okay this is not smart economic advice
16:29 this is exploitation stop using money to
16:33 stop using money to spend money it's
16:35 just stupid
16:36 okay here's our second one big bird
16:39 the bigger buy now pay later from
16:42 one dollar to ten thousand dollars isn't
16:46 that sweet
16:48 you can have ten thousand dollars worth
16:51 of debt
16:52 easy just fly pig go pig
16:56 you go into a retail store today and
16:58 what are they saying
16:59 you can put that on after pay you can
17:02 have to pay
17:03 a t-shirt listen people my age remember
17:06 when you could hire purchase
17:07 a fridge now you can hire purchase a
17:10 pair of socks
17:14 isn't that kind
17:18 isn't that kind of them shops are
17:21 advertising after pay
17:23 parties come on anybody getting these
17:25 emails
17:26 after pay party come on yeah that's all
17:29 let's all after pay and call it a party
17:34 it's like let's all throw our money into
17:36 a fire and celebrate it
17:40 let it make let let a song go out saying
17:43 arise church boycotts after pay
17:46 [Applause]
17:47 after pay you turn tv you turn on your
17:51 tv anybody still watch television
17:53 if you turn on your tv so many
17:56 ads are marketing debt i mean during
17:59 lockdown you know we were we were like
18:01 trying to look for things to do as a
18:02 family and so we decided to introduce
18:04 our children to the greatest television
18:06 show ever made the west wing
18:08 and it's it's on tv and z on demand for
18:10 those of you old enough to remember it
18:11 the west wing i love the west whispering
18:13 you'll never understand
18:14 me unless you've watched it and so i
18:15 love it and so we were like kids were
18:17 going to watch the west wing so we put
18:18 on the west wing
18:19 and then there's just these ads and
18:22 every single one
18:23 was about finance this one comes up
18:26 there's this sweet
18:28 neighborhood looking lady she just kind
18:30 of looks straight to camera
18:32 i have debt i have a mortgage and other
18:35 times she uses eyebrows
18:36 other times
18:41 i want to pay for things you know so i
18:44 borrow
18:45 it makes my life better it helps my
18:48 family
18:49 you know i got so mad i nearly threw the
18:52 remote through the television
18:55 these loan companies are not trying to
18:58 make your life
18:59 better when you're at university oh it's
19:02 so stressful to be at university
19:04 i mean it is you have to work 30 years
19:06 of the year 30 weeks of the year
19:08 you're under so much strain just borrow
19:11 your costs
19:12 borrow your fees borrow for your books
19:15 borrow for your living costs
19:17 listen students it's not your
19:20 money it's debt and the borrower is
19:23 slave to the lender
19:25 need a car take out a loan and a cheap
19:28 finance rate is 10
19:29 [Music]
19:31 and whether it's new or second hand that
19:33 car
19:34 is going to devalue by 15 when you drive
19:38 it off the lot it'll be worth
19:41 50 of what you paid for it in a maximum
19:45 of three years so why would you pay
19:48 10 percent to devalue by 50
19:52 you need money get a credit card you'll
19:54 get free air points
19:59 struggling to make your next payday will
20:01 advance it for you
20:02 take out a personal loan to go on
20:04 holiday
20:05 to buy a guitar get dead dead
20:09 dead we have been sold debt team
20:12 all the time i'm not angry for people
20:15 that have fallen to debt i'm angry at
20:17 the fact that we're allowing it
20:19 in our culture it's destroying destinies
20:23 ripping off families causing conflict
20:26 in relationships dwarfing dreams
20:30 robbing futures declined death
20:35 proverbs chapter 2 verse 12 says wisdom
20:38 will save you from evil people
20:40 from those whose words are twisted
20:43 i think that's an apt verse for this
20:45 message
20:47 will save you from evil people i'm not
20:49 saying that someone who works at a
20:50 finance company
20:52 is inherently evil i'm just saying the
20:54 marketing is
20:55 and the words are twisted let's get it
20:58 abundant
20:59 abundantly clear we are normalizing debt
21:02 everywhere we turn
21:03 in our culture and it is evil and
21:06 twisted
21:06 the culture of debt that is in our
21:09 society has created
21:10 unrealistic expectations that people
21:13 then feel pressured to live
21:14 up to i mean if everybody else is
21:17 borrowing money
21:18 to get a car then you feel like you've
21:20 got to have a car to keep up
21:22 if other people are incurring debt to
21:24 have their dream wedding
21:26 then people don't want to have something
21:27 that doesn't look like as lavish when it
21:30 should be just a celebration of love
21:33 if people in your uni lecture are all
21:35 decked out with the latest labels
21:37 then maybe you should borrow on your
21:39 living costs so that you can get
21:41 accepted
21:42 too their holiday looks amazing on
21:44 instagram
21:45 i better have my photo really holly
21:47 holiday as well
21:48 and if we aren't deliberate resolute and
21:51 determined
21:52 we end up swimming with the same tide we
21:55 fall
21:55 into the same trap we borrow money to
21:58 purchase things
21:59 or to do things that we actually can't
22:02 afford to do
22:03 to keep the pretense that we feel under
22:06 pressure
22:07 to present to the world that is around
22:09 us and when the event is over and the
22:12 purchase is made
22:13 we now live with that draining
22:16 debilitating debt
22:19 limiting our today and holding back the
22:22 potential of our
22:24 tomorrows that's why the bible says
22:27 in the book of matthew that wide is the
22:30 gate and broad
22:31 is the road that leads to destruction
22:33 and many enter
22:34 through it guys i don't want to be
22:36 overly dramatic
22:37 my team are telling me that i am but i'm
22:39 a preacher so i'm gonna
22:41 i'm gonna go with melodrama on this
22:42 occasion
22:44 there's a lot of people falling to death
22:47 we have a toxic culture of dead it's not
22:50 just here
22:51 in aotearoa but is absolutely in our
22:54 nation
22:55 small is the gate and narrow is the road
22:58 that leads to life we've got to fight
23:01 against this culture of death
23:04 we're going to say that it cannot come
23:06 near us
23:07 all the students that are hearing this
23:08 today banks offer you
23:10 credit cards and overdrafts when you
23:13 become a university student
23:16 oh john the interest is free
23:19 on the overdraft it's it's interest free
23:23 while you are studying
23:24 if you're earning this year six thousand
23:27 dollars you don't need
23:28 a one thousand dollar credit card and a
23:30 two thousand dollar student overdraft
23:32 that's half of what you're going to earn
23:34 this year and then if you're planning to
23:36 tithe on that you on your gross then
23:38 you haven't got much left over your debt
23:42 is dangerous it
23:43 enslaves you to the present car dealers
23:46 encourage
23:46 finance on cars and they're not going to
23:48 be worth half of what they're
23:50 purchased for in such a short period of
23:53 time
23:53 it's everywhere one of the things we've
23:56 got to remember most about debt you've
23:58 got to take one thing down take this
23:59 down
24:00 you are psychologically wired to pay
24:02 more for something purchased on debt
24:06 if you pay credit of any kind for
24:08 anything
24:09 you are psychologically proven
24:12 to be more likely to pay more for it
24:16 if you purchase on debt surveys studied
24:19 and mcdonald's in america have found
24:21 that people using a credit card in
24:23 mcdonald's spend on average
24:25 47 more than those who don't use a
24:28 credit card
24:30 after pay when you hear after pay can we
24:33 rebrand after pay
24:35 easy debt like you know how you just
24:36 translate some things from one language
24:38 to another
24:39 when you hear after pay here easy debt
24:41 after pay easy debt
24:43 after pay easy debt what it is is an
24:46 easy way to purchase something that you
24:48 can't afford
24:52 it's easier to psychologically say i'll
24:54 make four
24:55 small payments than one big one by the
24:57 way
24:58 that's just how they get you if you
25:00 don't make the four payments they don't
25:02 recall the t-shirt
25:04 they start charging you credit card
25:06 rates of interest
25:07 they aren't charity they're creating
25:09 another way
25:10 for you to part with your money so that
25:13 we can
25:14 not only purchase things we don't need
25:16 but things we also can't afford
25:18 man i'm being specific in this series
25:20 miss message because i just feel
25:21 like this is power you will spend 30
25:24 more on average for a car that you
25:26 purchase on finance the one you buy with
25:28 cash
25:30 the reason why because it's not real and
25:31 it's not immediate the average
25:33 lease payment or finance payment i
25:36 should say on
25:37 a car is 391 dollars a month
25:41 391 dollars a month across your working
25:44 life
25:44 is 1.1 million dollars
25:48 don't ask yourself whether you'd like a
25:50 slightly nicer car ask yourself whether
25:52 you'd like a million bucks when you
25:53 retire
25:54 that doesn't have compound interest in
25:55 it by the way
25:57 you will pay less for something that you
25:59 purchase with cash
26:01 10 to 30 percent less
26:04 proven when you purchase with cash
26:06 because money is more real
26:08 because it takes longer to spend it
26:10 because you consider
26:11 the cost debt is trying to live forward
26:14 while you're paying for what is backward
26:17 that's why we need grace because the
26:19 debt is real
26:21 of our sin and jesus frees us from the
26:24 debt of our sin
26:25 so that we can have a future but here's
26:28 the thing
26:29 the only debt jesus pays for is the debt
26:32 of our sin
26:33 he doesn't pay for the debt of our
26:35 holiday doesn't pay for the debt of our
26:37 swagger
26:38 wardrobe he doesn't pay for the debt
26:40 that we've incurred for silly things
26:43 it's hard to move forward when you have
26:45 debt in your present
26:47 that is preventing where you want to go
26:49 the borrower is slave
26:52 to the lender buy everything you can
26:56 with cash
26:57 everything save before you spend
27:01 wait long enough after the money hits
27:04 your bank account
27:05 that it becomes yours before you
27:08 willingly make it somebody else's money
27:11 i want to prove this i need two i need
27:13 two volunteers i have 500 bucks cash i
27:15 need two volunteers
27:17 okay wow that was the easiest volunteers
27:20 i've ever called for
27:21 i need you to stand beside each other so
27:23 dee would you want to go around the
27:24 other side stand further away from me so
27:25 i look taller
27:26 uh not that come close come close we're
27:28 going to get you on the same camera
27:29 angle
27:30 this is try and get us yeah make us look
27:31 good oscar okay here we go
27:35 aidan if i was to give you this 500
27:39 here it is would you be prepared to give
27:42 200 of that
27:43 to d yes
27:47 why because i'll get 300.
27:50 well because it's also not your money
27:56 it's my money
27:59 so if the deal is that i give it to you
28:01 and you give 200 to him
28:03 then that's easy because the money's not
28:05 yours
28:06 but the money's in your hands now if i
28:10 said to you aidan
28:11 here's this money put in the bank for a
28:13 year
28:15 i go away i'm going to go out a shot i
28:17 come back
28:21 and then after one year i say hey dee
28:23 give 200 bucks of your money
28:25 sorry aiden give 200 bucks of your money
28:27 to d would you find that easy
28:30 no no because now it's not my money
28:32 anymore
28:34 it's your money
28:38 the thing is that what we do is before
28:40 we've even earned it we start spending
28:42 it
28:43 we're giving it out after pay car
28:46 payment
28:47 i'd like a better lounge suite and then
28:50 before it's even yours you're already
28:52 giving it to somebody else
28:55 hang on to the money long enough until
28:57 the money becomes
28:59 your money until it's real to you
29:02 until it is emotionally yours because
29:04 the borrower
29:06 is slave to the lender thank you very
29:09 much guys give them a big clap didn't
29:10 they do well
29:12 listen team money takes
29:16 years to save in seconds to spend
29:19 that's still my money d.get
29:26 forget about d everybody look at me
29:30 money takes every i stayed on the money
29:36 yeah you've got a marketing company that
29:38 is trying to get your eyes put on
29:39 something
29:40 else everywhere you go everywhere you go
29:43 every every website you go on where
29:46 you're looking at your next purchase
29:47 after bay in the little corner
29:49 everybody's trying to get you to take
29:51 your eyes off your money
29:53 money takes years to save in seconds to
29:55 spend
29:56 buy your clothes with cash no credit
29:59 card
30:00 no after pay buy your car with cash
30:03 even if you have to drive a piece of
30:06 junk pay for your wedding with cash
30:10 your wedding should be a celebration of
30:12 love not something that incurs you
30:14 debt in 10 years time you'd be better
30:17 off with a house deposit than a lavish
30:20 wedding
30:20 pay for your holidays with cash don't
30:23 keep
30:23 up with the joneses tear up your credit
30:26 cards
30:28 you've heard of cancel culture right we
30:30 need to cancel culture at a rise church
30:33 that says we are cancelling credit cards
30:36 they're gone from our lives we're not
30:38 going to have them anymore
30:41 you'll spend 10 to 30 percent more if
30:43 you use a credit card on a regular basis
30:46 10 to 30 percent mark more jillian and i
30:49 do not have credit cards we have debit
30:52 cards
30:53 we have two i have two and jillian has
30:55 three
30:56 jillian has the third for regular
30:58 automatic payments that manage our
31:00 family sort of stuff you know
31:01 but the truth is we have chosen we will
31:04 not have credit cards
31:06 for two reasons number one i hate debt
31:09 i hate it i hate it i hate it and number
31:12 two
31:12 i want to tell our church regularly that
31:15 we don't have a personal
31:17 credit card everybody would do
31:19 themselves a favor to say
31:21 we are not going to embrace this culture
31:24 of credit cards it's not a sign of
31:26 prosperity it's a surefire way to
31:29 poverty
31:31 contentment settling with what you have
31:34 is the most powerful financial tool you
31:37 have in your arsenal
31:41 be content with what you have decades of
31:45 marketing have led us to think that we
31:47 will be
31:48 better our lives will be better if we
31:51 can purchase x
31:53 and debt becomes the impact of us
31:55 believing
31:56 that lie you will be happier
32:00 if you have no debt you will have more
32:02 options if you have no debt
32:04 you will need to earn less money if you
32:07 have no debt
32:08 you can do more for others if you have
32:10 no debt you can do more for god
32:13 if you have no debt it's time to decline
32:16 debt it's time to break this bondage
32:19 that is seeking to enslave our
32:21 generation
32:23 if you believe it every campus every
32:25 local online in your bedroom
32:27 give god some praise right now come on
32:32 okay okay okay so what do i do if i have
32:35 debt
32:36 romans 13 verse 8 here's god's word let
32:39 no debt remain outstanding
32:42 let no debt remain outstanding
32:46 don't let debt hang around
32:50 don't let it hang around fight against
32:52 it confront your debt
32:54 decide you don't want to be in debt get
32:57 emotional about debt
32:59 purpose in your heart i don't want to be
33:02 in debt get fired up about it
33:05 get extreme about it proverbs chapter 6
33:09 and
33:09 the first verse is like one to five
33:11 talks about what somebody should do if
33:12 they have made themselves
33:13 surety for somebody else is dead and
33:16 literally the writer
33:17 probably says you shouldn't sleep if
33:19 you've made yourself surety you
33:21 shouldn't
33:21 rest if you've allowed yourself to
33:23 become indebted on the behalf of
33:25 somebody else
33:26 you should you should not let slumber
33:28 near you
33:29 at all you should run like a gazelle you
33:32 should go
33:33 all night a gazelle sounds really fast
33:36 in other words you should be hyper
33:38 motivated
33:39 crazy fired up emotionally engaged
33:43 you need to get passionate about getting
33:46 out of debt
33:47 we need a culture i want to fire you up
33:49 to be a person
33:51 that is saying i'm gonna deal with this
33:53 debt i'm gonna break its bondage off of
33:55 my life
33:56 for me for my spouse for my future
33:58 children
33:59 current children grandchildren for my
34:02 dreams
34:03 for the impact i can make in the world
34:05 for god
34:06 for the difference that i could make in
34:08 the kingdom of god
34:10 i'm going to deal with debt so how do
34:12 you deal with that let me give you five
34:14 things we can do okay you ready for
34:15 these
34:16 the first thing you need to do if you
34:17 want to deal with debt is make sure that
34:19 you are in a life group
34:21 every life group from teenagers up in a
34:24 rise church
34:25 all term is going to be talking about
34:27 our finances
34:28 and if you are in debt make sure you are
34:31 in a life group
34:32 let me speak to those whose debt right
34:34 now is keeping you awake at night
34:36 if you have debt in your life that is
34:38 like
34:39 keeping you awake then you need to go to
34:41 one of our grow
34:42 financial life groups these are specific
34:45 life groups that deal with
34:47 specific needs in the lives of people
34:49 and we have grow
34:50 financial life groups run by people with
34:52 a higher level of training
34:54 and we can help you with the problem
34:56 that you have with debt but get in the
34:58 life group
34:58 number two get rid of your ability to go
35:01 into more debt
35:05 cut up your credit cards young people
35:08 never have a credit card cancel
35:12 all agreements you have with finance
35:14 companies
35:15 remember once in the early day you know
35:17 like we we had that high purchase
35:20 lounge suite and then it was amazing
35:22 because it was like each year that went
35:24 on
35:24 i wasn't using the agreement i'd
35:26 cancelled the high
35:27 paid off and never had another one but
35:29 they kept sending me out pre-approval
35:31 letters
35:31 anybody ever had those congratulations
35:34 we've increased your limit
35:36 to three thousand dollars four thousand
35:38 dollars six thousand dollars
35:40 eight thousand dollars i think it got up
35:42 to like nine grand before
35:44 they finally gave up on me
35:47 cancel all agreements that you have with
35:49 finance companies
35:51 number three cut all possible expenses
35:55 until you pay for your debt
35:58 get radical run
36:01 don't sleep don't slumber get extreme
36:06 get passionate cancel all subscriptions
36:11 netflix neon disney
36:14 pay to use apps on your iphone very hard
36:18 to do
36:18 but if you go onto a actual computer you
36:21 can get into the itunes section
36:24 and then find out your subscriptions
36:26 make sure that if you want to keep them
36:27 you add them to your budget
36:29 so you can see how much they are a week
36:30 a month in a year
36:32 for you to have the opportunity to use
36:34 an app you never use
36:38 do free bodyweight workouts at home if
36:40 you have to cancel the gym
36:42 go don't go out for meals live in the
36:45 clothes you already own
36:46 take the bus or ride a bicycle to work
36:49 get passionate
36:50 get fired up get zealous and get
36:53 fight against all debt go
36:56 for it get fired up and say this debt is
37:00 not gonna hang around
37:01 in my life forever
37:04 okay all right so get rid of the ability
37:07 cut all possible expenses so that you
37:09 trim your budget down
37:10 to the brutal minimum number four
37:14 pay off your smallest debt first
37:17 regardless of the amount
37:19 dave ramsey calls this the debt snowball
37:22 strategy i'm borrowing it straight from
37:24 him
37:24 but he is made way better at this than i
37:26 am pay
37:28 the minimum possible repayment on every
37:31 debt that you have
37:32 regardless of the interest amount other
37:34 than the smallest debt you have
37:36 and then pay off your smallest debt
37:39 first
37:39 once you've paid off that pay off the
37:41 next one again
37:43 regardless of the interest on the debt
37:45 and then so on and so on until you paid
37:47 off
37:48 all your debt why would you do that when
37:50 the interest is higher
37:51 accountants are literally freaking out
37:54 the reason why
37:55 is that when you run a marathon once you
37:58 get within a kilometer of the finish
38:00 line
38:00 your energy lifts once you see the end
38:03 in sight
38:04 you're more motivated to keep going
38:07 people
38:08 proven pay off their debt faster
38:11 when they start with the smallest get a
38:13 win get the next one
38:15 get the next one and get the next one go
38:17 from win
38:18 to win by the way if you have an
38:20 interest-free student loan
38:22 put that in a different discrete
38:24 category don't rush off to pay debt
38:26 that you aren't paying interest on but
38:28 be careful how much debt you incur
38:30 because it's going to be with you for a
38:32 long time again
38:34 students i hope you remember that the
38:36 debt you have will be with you until
38:38 you're
38:39 at least 30 years old that's a long time
38:43 when you are 18.
38:45 we need to be careful to make sure that
38:47 we are fighting against all debt pay off
38:49 the smallest one first
38:51 and keep moving forward in your journey
38:53 of dealing
38:54 with your debt and our last point
38:57 point number five is sell everything to
39:00 pay
39:00 off the debt debt is real
39:04 it's dangerous it's cancerous it's
39:06 hurting us
39:08 so if we've got all this stuff in our
39:10 lives that we got
39:12 by getting into debt why don't you think
39:15 about
39:16 selling it to get yourself back out of
39:18 debt
39:21 trade me facebook marketplace
39:26 sell everything get rid of your dad
39:29 fast track your future i sold a car
39:33 and ended up with a debt on it the
39:35 reason why
39:36 was because it was going to be cheaper
39:38 in three years time
39:39 to have the debt of a car i no longer
39:41 owned than to have the debt
39:43 of the car that i kept so sell the stuff
39:46 to get out of debt
39:48 do everything you can to get out of debt
39:51 sell stuff sell it you don't need it
39:54 if you haven't worn it sell it if you
39:56 haven't sat on it
39:57 sell it if you haven't used it sell it
40:00 get it out of your life
40:02 get free from debt we're going to break
40:05 the bondage of debt
40:07 i got a big announcement for you today
40:10 are you ready
40:11 there is life beyond dead
40:14 god's got a plan for your life my friend
40:17 life in all its fullness god wants you
40:20 to make a difference
40:22 god wants you sleeping at peace god
40:24 wants you
40:25 leaving a legacy for the generation that
40:28 comes after you
40:29 god wants you prosperous god wants you
40:32 living generously
40:33 god wants you making a difference in the
40:35 lives of others
40:36 so we are going to unite together and
40:39 say
40:40 debt you are declined in my life
40:43 you are declined in this church we're
40:46 going to break the spirit of debt that
40:49 is enslaving
40:50 too many i need you to give god a big
40:53 shout of praise
40:54 all across this country for breaking
40:58 the spirit of dead stand your feet
41:01 together with me stand your feet
41:02 together with me
41:03 it's a verse of scripture coming into my
41:05 head right now
41:07 and it's a verse of scripture from
41:09 nehemiah
41:11 because in nehemiah the bible tells us
41:13 that
41:14 as they began to restore israel and
41:18 jerusalem they began to sort out the
41:21 rubble
41:22 of a city that had been dilapidated and
41:25 broke down and as they did this they
41:27 began to unearth things and one of the
41:28 things that they
41:29 unearthed was the scriptures
41:32 the first five books of the bible that
41:34 was their bible at the time
41:37 and they found they felt
41:41 they found the law and when they found
41:44 the law excuse me
41:45 when they found the law the bible says
41:48 that they read it out
41:52 and as they read it out there were two
41:54 reactions
41:55 [Music]
41:57 there were some people in the crowd that
42:00 was so fired up to hear
42:02 what was being read from the law that
42:05 they were just like
42:06 shouting with praises and then the bible
42:09 says there was this other group of
42:10 people
42:11 that were just weeping in brokenness
42:16 and the reason why was because there
42:18 were some
42:19 that were like we know what to do
42:22 and there was some that like i wish we
42:24 had done
42:26 what we should have done and i know that
42:29 there will be two groups of people out
42:30 there today
42:31 those that are like great heard this
