0:49 nervous that's almost
0:52 impossible thank you Mr President for
0:56 the most humbling honor of my
1:00 life you have nominated me to serve on
1:04 the country's highest court and I am deeply
1:05 deeply
1:09 moved I could not in the few minutes I
1:13 have today mention the names of the many
1:16 friends and family who have guided and
1:19 supported me throughout my life and who
1:22 have been instrumental in helping me
1:24 realize my
1:27 dreams I see many of those faces in this
1:30 room each of you
1:34 whom I love deeply will know that my
1:39 heart today is bursting with gratitude
1:42 for all you have done for
1:45 me the president has said to you that I
1:47 bring my
1:49 family in the audience is my brother

1:57 Syracuse New York my sister-in-law Tracy
2:00 my niece Kylie she looks like like
2:10 Corey I stand on the shoulders of countless
2:12 countless
2:16 people yet there is one extraordinary
2:23 aspiration that person is my mother
2:25 Selena suay [Applause]
2:41 [Applause]
2:43 my mother has devoted her life to my
2:46 brother and me and as the president
2:50 mentioned she worked often two jobs to
2:53 help support us after dad
2:56 died I have often
3:01 said that I am all I am because of her
3:04 and I am only half the woman she
3:09 is sitting next to her is Omar Lopez my
3:11 mom's husband and a man whom I have

3:31 [Applause]
3:34 I chose to be a lawyer and ultimately a
3:38 judge because I find endless challenge
3:42 in the complexities of the law I firmly
3:45 believe in the rule of law as the
3:49 foundation for all of our basic rights
3:52 for as long as I can remember I have
3:55 been inspired by the achievement of our
3:58 founding fathers they set forth
4:01 principles that have endured for more
4:03 than two
4:06 centuries those principles are as
4:09 meaningful and relevant in each
4:13 generation as the generation before it
4:16 would be a profound privilege for me to
4:20 play a role in applying those principles
4:24 to the questions and controversies we face
4:32 today although I grew up in very modest
4:33 and challenging
4:36 circumstances I consider my life to be
4:40 immeasurably rich I was raised in a
4:44 Bronx public housing project but studied
4:47 at two of the nation's finest
4:50 universities I did work as an assistant
4:54 district attorney Prosecuting violent
4:57 crimes that devastate our communities
5:00 but then I joined a private Law Firm and
5:03 worked with International corporations
5:06 doing business in the United States I
5:09 have had the privilege of serving as a
5:12 federal district court trial judge and
5:15 am now serving as an federal appellant
5:17 circuit court
5:21 judge this wealth of
5:23 experiences personal and
5:27 professional have helped me appreciate
5:31 the variety of perspectives that present
5:34 themselves in every case that I hear it
5:39 has helped me to understand respect and
5:43 respond to the concerns and arguments of
5:47 all litigants who appear before me as
5:51 well as to the views of my colleagues on the
5:52 the
5:57 bench I strive never to forget the real
6:02 world consequences of my decisions on
6:12 government it is a daunting feeling to be
6:13 be
6:17 here 11 years ago during my confirmation
6:19 process for appointment to the second
6:22 circuit I was given a private tour of
6:26 the White House it was an overwhelming
6:28 experience for a kid from the South Bronx
6:30 Bronx
6:35 yet never in my wildest childhood
6:39 imaginings that I ever Envision that
6:44 moment let alone did I ever dream that I
6:47 would live this
6:52 moment Mr President I greatly appreciate
6:54 the honor you are giving me and I look
6:57 forward to working with the senate in
7:00 the confirmation process I I hope that
7:02 as the Senate and American people learn
7:07 more about me they will see that I am an
7:11 ordinary person who has been blessed with
7:12 with
7:16 extraordinary opportunities and
7:20 experiences today is one of those
