Strong Filipino 8 Lesson 2.4 Analysis
of the musical play The Brave Warrior
by the Filipino theater. Written by Joel
Costa Malabanan on February 7, 2016.
2016.
I cordially invite you on a
meaningful journey into the
history and art of the musical play "
Pinin Warrior".
A work that opened the door to a
deeper understanding of life. Thoughts
and stance of the great [ __ ].
Apolinaro Mabini. In the play, not only was
his intelligence shown but
also his strong
commitment to the people.
This play was performed at the Filipino Theater
at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The story and music bring to life the
historical period that enveloped the
town during the era of
American and Spanish colonialism. From
revolution to the betrayal of leaders,
leaders,
important events are depicted through
song, movement, and creative drama.
Steam punk as a launching pad for performance.
performance. The
The
production design that I witnessed at the
Aurelio Tolentino exhibition at CCP
earlier today with my wife and son
Raja was unique and creative.
It all started with the set design of Tom Io,
a great sculptor, painter, and
multimedia visual artist. That's why
there is also an
exhibit of his works on the grounds of the CCP.
Poststructuralism and postmodernism are the attacks
of his work, which helped
make the stage attractive for the
performance of the virtuous warrior.
Steampunk originated as a concept by
American science fiction writer
Kevin Wayne Jetter and was developed in 1980.
It emphasizes the use of
design that depicts the industrial
revolution of the 20th century.
This style can be seen in the
stage design created by Imaw. It's
like the inside of a machine where the
parts move and rotate. The
clock in the center of the stage
serves as a medium for historical
events related to Mabini's life.
The beauty of the set design,
right down to the costumes used by
James Reyes to bring the scenes to life, is commendable.
scenes to life, is commendable.
And the punctuating part of the performance is
the break with the usual tradition of
depicting events based on the
actual clothing of people in the
period described. Instead of the
sepia-like colors and costumes of the
Spanish and American eras, the
play uses black clothing to depict
the deep desires of the
selfish Filipinos represented by
Pedro Paterno, Felipe Buen Camino, and
Felipe Calderon.
On the other hand, this style
of steampunk design can cause
confusion among viewers, especially
if they are not familiar with
history. Because creative
designs that are far from the reality of life
can become an obstacle to understanding the
flow of the story in Mabini's life.
Although the play's dialogue is what
brings the play to life, a historical
work is expected to attempt to
show the audience a true picture
of the society in which Mabini lived.
Here are the important dialogues. It's
difficult to think as a Filipino.
The diversity of ethnic origins
of Filipinos also had an impact on the
fragmentation of the
people's principles during Mabini's time.
Aguinaldo's character is consistently portrayed in the
film General Luna as
a dominant Filipino who puts
personal interests before the people.
Currently, how can
every Filipino advance the interests of the people
in a government whose priority is
education as a labor export policy?
Next, how can peace be given
if freedom is taken away through violence?
violence?
Mac Kenley's benevolent assimilation is truly deceptive.
The play attempted to show the
cruelty of the Americans through short
dances that symbolized killing.
rape and exploitation by
Americans. It is true that the Thomasites
came to teach the Filipinos,
but they managed to hide from the consciousness of
our ancestors the cruelty of the
Balanggiga massacre in 1901 and the Bad
Dajo massacre in 1906 where hundreds of
children and adults were murdered by the canoes.
canoes.
The revolution followed while he was still alive, so it was too
early to celebrate his
death. This is what Mabini said to
Paterno and Ben Camino when
the two encouraged him to accept the
autonomy offered by the Kanos. It is
not mentioned in the play that during
General Luciano San
Miguel's struggle against the Americans in 1903,
Mabini was San Miguel's recognized advisor
. General Luciano San Miguel was killed
on March 28, 1903 at the Battle of
Coral Rock, where
about 200 of his men were killed.
This dialogue is appropriate for
this time and the struggle against
corruption that is also mentioned at the end
of the play. The
law of violence followed, the law of the
jungle. This is part of Babini's statement
on the fictional character Pepe. It
seems that Pepe is Joven, the symbolism
of youth in the novel. The violence of
Americans is a manifestation of
their animalistic behavior towards
our race.
Before General Miguel Malvar surrendered
in 1902, the canoes also massacred the
Batanguenyos, forcing
Malvar to surrender. If society
is currently a jungle
ruled by crocodiles in government,
shouldn't violence also be
used against them to achieve justice?
justice?
What is gained by violence must be brought to justice.
Mabini thought the
war was over because he died in May
1903. He did not live to see the struggle
of Macario Sakay who was hanged on
September 7, 1907.
And Felipe Salvador or Apo Ipe who was
hanged on April 12, 1892.
The parliamentary struggle
took a long time before yielding results
in 1935.
And during the Commonwealth era,
leaders who were shaped by the education of
the Kanos like Quezon, Ostmenia and
Rojas did not really seek liberation
liberation
because of their
protected businesses that were no different from the
image of Buwen Camino and Paterno.
The war is over in the countryside.
The war in the countryside did not end
after Malvar's surrender.
The thomasites hid from us the greatness
of Theodoro Asidilyo, Ruperto Ríos,
Jonio Magbuelas, Julian Montalan,
Carnelio Fizardo and others.
This is one of the script's failed dialogues
because Mabini knew that
the likes of
General Luciano San Miguel were still fighting and even
General Arthur Macarthur was surprised to
learn that Mabini, who had just
sworn allegiance to America, was already in
contact with the rebels.
rebels.
And the aforementioned dialogue is even more inappropriate
at the present time because the
struggle is still ongoing against the
ruling classes of society.
Love the Philippines more than
yourself. This is one of the
most meaningful messages of the virtuous
warrior, perhaps mixed with
Mabini's decalogue. If
only all the country's leaders had
this vision, perhaps the
Philippines would be developed and would no longer need to be
enslaved by foreigners as OFWs. It is a
bitter curse to be ignorant.
Part of Mabini's conversation about
his desire to learn. Not
much attention has been paid to the role of
Valerio Malabanan, one of the first
Filipino teachers who influenced
many young people. In fact,
Risala also mentioned him as the teacher
of the character Placido Penitente in Elphilibusterismo.
Elphilibusterismo.
Perhaps some research should be
done to give Valerio Malabanan a separate stage play.
play.
The ignorance
caused by religion during Mabini's time is truly a bitter curse
that still exists in this era of
21st century skills. Just think of the
ignorance of some young people
today who want martial law and
idolize Marcos. Even though
they did not actually experience the dictatorship period. The
dictatorship period. The
ignorance of our countrymen is truly a curse, allowing
allowing
those who plunder the
country's wealth to win elections. The
script created by Dr. was truly intensively researched. Nickor Chongson.
The dialogues are sharp and still resonate
in the present day.
The music composed by Joed Balsamo is also excellent.
As a musician as well,
his ability to create melodies that are appropriate to the
era and message of the lyrics is impressive.
Chris Melyado's direction is also excellent
. Although it would have been better if
the scene of
Mabini's dream and his conversation with Del
Pilar had been in the first part. July 4, 1896. When
Marcelo H. del Pilar died in Barcelona,
Spain. And I think it would have been better if it had been in the
beginning and placed as part
of giving the audience an insight into
Mabini's background.
Even so, this is probably part of the
director's artistic license.
The performance of the artists, especially
Binibining Lisel Batukan, was
impressive. Acting on
stage is difficult, but it's even harder when there's a crowd watching.
watching.
Arman Ferrer also played Aguinaldo well in what I
saw, and even the roles of
Jonathan Tando, Marco Viana, and JV Ibaste
as Ben Camino, Calderon, and Paterno.
Paterno.
And Aldo Ven Kilao, who
I first saw in Moon and Gun, is also great. This
kind of performance should be
seen by many Filipinos. How
many people would have been able to watch if the Php57,750
ticket to Madonna's concert had been used
only to watch the brave warrior.
warrior.
The infatuation of many with
Dayo music like Madonna's music is a
product of the Americanization of our
race over the past 100 years.
Pedro Paterno's talent was wasted as
one of the first propagandists and the
creator of the first Filipino novel in
1885 titled Ninay. The
play's creative attempt to
show that Paterno's talent
in writing was also used by him to create
pro-American performances,
and the play is correct in stating at the
end that there are still many Paternos,
Buen Caminos, and Calderons today.
Aguinaldo's weakness as a leader can
also be seen in the current
president who wasted his six years in office.
office.
The heroism of my birthday
hero, Apolinaro Mabini, should truly be recognized today. Perhaps
after watching the young people
I was with earlier,
Mabini's role in history and
perhaps in the future was clarified.
No young person will ask
