hi everyone welcome to my YouTube
channel I know I've not been able to
make any video you know for some time
now is because I have been very busy but
anyway um I'm here today to talk to us
about something very important and this
is because I've reflected on what
happened in
2023 and two good BMS has helped a lot
of people to get job okay both within
and outside United
Kingdom but while that is the case some
people you know still strugg and I have
reflected on the feedback you know that
some of you guys have given and I've
come to something that I think might be
the problem so hopefully we're going to
discuss today on how to answer
biomedical scientist interview questions
before we go on I want to say happy New
Year okay and hopefully 2024 will bring
more success on each of our ways my name
is Dr emman Lodo I'm a biomedical
scientist and I'm a lecturer in
biomedical science here in the United
Kingdom so now let us look at when you
go for biom medical scientist job
interview and a question comes there are
few things that can help you to enhance
or increase your chances now you know
that many of us have got experiences I
want to believe okay the only difference
is that the experience you have got
possibly maybe in your home country
might be different the way we practice
here in the United Kingdom or iseland or
us or Canada or Australia as the case
may be now that is why I want to brid
the Gap okay now and because of that
when you are answering questions one of
the things that you must learn to have
is to be relaxed when I mean relax I
mean you need to try and be composed
don't try to be nervous when you are
answering questions that way your brain
is likely to remember something you know
um maybe that you are likely to forget
now another thing I want to bring out
there is the fact that you need to know
that biomedical
scientist profession is a practical
profession it's an evidencebased
profession is a clinical profession
which has to do with practical okay that
mean there has to be activities before a
result can be generated now before I
also go further can I also say that you
know in biomedical science as a
biomedical scientist one of the things
you are trying to do is to investigate
the results that you have obtained
whether or not is appropriate for that
patient okay what it means that a
biomedical scientist have to investigate
the result to see that it is genuine for
that patient okay what that means is
that is a practical profession and
because he a practical profession then
it means that when you want to answer
question don't base your question only
on theoretical knowledge also base your
question using practical knowledge what
I mean is that when you answer a
particular question always use for
example when you say for example what
you are doing is that you are providing
yourself an opportunity to be able to
explain that your answer in Practical
terms I hope that makes sense so that is
very very important now another point I
want to make is that
because practical is important in your
answering question I want to suggest
something for you when you want to
answer any question picture yourself in
the lab don't answer question like
somebody that is outside the lab picture
yourself doing that thing in the lab
once you picture yourself doing that
thing in the lab it will help you to
answer the question in a sequential
format what do I mean by that sometimes
many of you go for interview and you are
being asked a question then then your
question doesn't flow in a sequential
format okay so it look like it move in a
zigzag form what I mean is that when you
want to answer question Let It Go like
Let It Go in the format of maybe 1 2 3 4
5 6 and so on or a b c d and so on
meaning that your answer should flow as
it is being done in the
laboratory let me give you example now
you be asked a question about what can
cause a low BL you can say say so many
things about it anything you say
possibly is correct if you say something
like Pless atletism you are right if you
say something like large plet you are
right if you say something like ITP you
are right anything possibly you say even
if you say bleeding you are right but
when you are mentioning this point why
that is good it will be important to
explain give your answer as someone who
is in the laboratory imagine that you're
in the lab and you've run a sample and
you are seeing a low platlet if you are
in the lab what are you going to do I
bet that the first thing you are going
to do is to go and get the sample and
check what the problem might be and
after you've checked what the problem
might be using the sample then you
cannot investigate further therefore if
you answering that question of low blet
it could de said to you know put your
answer in a format like you know
preanalytical analytical and post
analytical so under the pre analytical
you are not trying to check is there any
human factors okay that could have
contributed to that low
plet that's why you talk about checking
for a clo checking whether it is diluted
and so on now you now look at analytical
and that is where you can look okay if
there is no problem with um the
preanalytical is there any problem with
analytical and that is where you might
need to look at something like plet
clumping large plet plet atletism and so
on now when you look at something like
post analytical maybe you can bring in
something like the patient condition
maybe following the previous test result
okay and that is where you can bring in
something like maybe condition like ITP
TTP and and DIC and so on under low blet
I hope this is making sense so when you
go for interview and they ask you any
question Don't just run off ask yourself
picture yourself in the lab what are the
steps if I'm in the lab that I'm going
to use to investigate this use that
format and give your answers so I've
mentioned making sure that you answer
your question in a sequential format and
to be able to do that you need to
picture yourself in the laboratory and
that is where like I've said before
using example comes in and once you say
for example it gives you the opportunity
to now say what you have already done
your experience so you are trying to
bring your experience into that question
question they are asking you so that is
very very vital I'm going to be giving
us some few examples but I want to lay
this Foundation okay and this is where
the problem is in most cases some of you
guys have gone for an interview you said
they didn't ask you bi medical scientist
interview they didn't ask you biomedical
scientist question what do you mean by
that when you say you are not how can
you go for a biomedical scientist job
position and they don't ask you by
medical scientist interview question
there is no such a thing you is just
your own assumption you thought so okay
now let me explain what I mean some of
you have gone for an interview and you
prepare a lot of things regarding to
maybe um what you think should be asked
in the biom medical scientist interview
question let's say something like maybe
um of course you all know that my area
is hematology and blood transfusion now
let's say you be act some you were
expecting to be act something like low
plet like I've mentioned you expected to
be act something like raise iron now you
expected to act maybe you're expecting
that they going to to ask you something
like high normal or low MCV low
hemoglobin as the case may be now you've
gone for an interview they didn't ask
that now you are disappointed now
instead they start asking you question
like what makes you think you are
qualified for the job or they start ask
ask you question like tell us in which
way you have played as a good team
players or they start ask you question
like tell us which mistake have you made
and how what did you learn from it and
how did you correct it now when this
question start coming in your own mind
is not by medical scientist interview
question it
is the only thing you have you didn't
quite you may answer that question for
you you have answered because such
questions you know they can be very
challenging because it appears simple
but what that can increase your chances
of getting job when such questions
appear is to use for examle
and what it mean that you are going to
bring in your experience into that
question that thing you are expecting
for example you are expecting low
platlet you are expecting question on
low platlet you expecting question on
Race MCC you expecting question on high
as the case may be do you know you can
bring those questions into that answer
they are asking you do you understand
what I'm trying to say now let me bring
example here you've gone for an
interview and they asked you a question
they said tell us which mistake have you
made what did you learn from it okay
something like that as the case may be
you can say so many things okay but do
you know you can say for after you've
answered your question the the mistake
you have made you know what you've
learned to actually answer that question
it would be important to say for example
and that for example you can discuss to
bring in what you have studied around race
race
MCC you can bring in what you have
studied around raise MCV or low MCV you
can bring in what you have studied
around low plet high irr electronic
issue anything that you've studied along
that line that you know along that line
you can bring it in now let me explain
you how you can bring it in how can you
bring it in you can bring it in by
saying for example now you are not you
are because you are trying to tell them
the mistake you have made
if you know the implication of race iron
now why don't you give them a mistake of
maybe seeing a race ey now and you don't
know what to do now you explain that you
didn't know what to do okay what you
should have what you now Learned was you
not tell them what you have learned what
you know now about race iron now let's
say something like low platlet now you
can bring that as an example maybe you
saw maybe you analyze the result there
was a l plet okay you check it there's
no cloth or something like that okay or
it's not diluted it's not insufficient
whatever you checked it and because
you've checked it there is nothing that
seems to be a problem from the
preanalytical you release that result
now you can say that that is a mistake
that you made because what you should
have considered is it now you can bring
it something like like Plum you can
bring it something like large plet you
can bring it something a lot of things
around that area plets ISM and so on now
what am I trying to say what you are
doing is that even though they didn't
ask you about low even though they
didn't ask you about low MCV they didn't
ask you about raise high now you see now
you bringing that experience into that
question that is how to answer that
question nobody goes for interview and
they for biomedical scientist and they
don't ask you question on biomedical
scientist interview question is not
possible any biomedical scientist
interview you go you must the question
that will come must be a biomedical
scientist interview questions now
whether it comes direct or not is a
different thing when it comes direct is
fair enough for example they can ask you
what do you think that can cause race
MCC that's direct you see now you cannot
explain it but what if they ask you the
things I have said in the past maybe you
know um what mistake have you made as
anything they ask you around that area
you can bring in that same answer on
rest mcac and something that you didn't
know before but you now know you now
explain it does that make sense now
let's say you go for an interview as swe
they ask you I want to give another
example let's say they ask you something
like how do you ensure that you
prioritize your work now you can say a
lot of things you can say I prioritize
my work based on what is urgent or
emergency whichever way you want to
answer that you know it might be correct
but like what I'm trying to say today in
on this video is the fact that you don't
need to stop like that you can say for
for example and paint scenarios for them
you can paint a scenario of someone
bleeding in A and E you can paint a Saro
of someone bleeding in delivery suit or
meternity W you can play a Saro of baby
getting a call from GP okay you can
paint aaro of maybe someone calling you
about raise high now you can paint aaro
of having a malaria test to do you can
put all these things together are you
following now when you when you for
example you can say for example there
was a time you know I was on shift then
you paint these scenarios now you can
tell them how you prioritize it that way
you've given yourself the opportunity to
explain more how you can prioritize your
work don't just go about answering
questions without necessarily using
example remember like I've said biom
medical scientist is a practical
profession it's an Evidence based
profession therefore when you are
answering any question make sure it is
an that your question is based on
evidence okay not just theoretical
knowledge I hope this makes sense now
there's also another example I want to
bring in which is a common question
anyway they will ask you something like
what makes you think you are qualified
for the job you see now now you can say
a lot of things which I've already said
on my pre previous video about your
qualification your experience and all of
that do you know that that can also for
example you can say I am competent in
the validation of f block and result or
in the analysis and validation of f
block and result or in maintenance of
analy whatever you want to say so you
can say you are competent in that then
you say for example I'm trying to make
you to understand that what does it mean
to validate a result to validate the
result means that you have to know that
there is something wrong remember I
think i' I mentioned to you guys before
that there are two men types of
validation you have Auto validation you
have manual validation in Auto
validation the system the interface the
interface the softwares are programmed
that when something is at certain range
you know normal okay it will go through
without you seeing it what it mean that
as a biomedical scientist if you see any
result that you are to validate the
system is already saying the interface
the the the softwares okay the lims are
already suggesting that there's a
problem is it now so when you say you
are competent in validating result paint
any of these problems so you can say for
example I'm competent in validating food
block result such as in a case of
understanding the factor that can affect
block result including then you can give
low what that can cause it R race MCC
MCV you Cann now use that opportunity to
explain further what you know don't just
say generic thing and run on this is how
you can increase your chances of getting
a job and this is how you can answer
biomedical scientist interview question
I hope this makes sense okay now you can
you maybe you've also go for an
interview and they ask you something
like okay maybe you how do you deal with
a difficult member of Staff how do you
deal with a difficult member of Staff
now that question in your own mind of
course is behavioral what are you going
to do you can still bring in your
experience now of course you're are
going to say it's all about the patient
okay you try not to make sure it affect
you or something like that as a case may
be you know you can talk about where
possible you can let the manager to know
so that that that can solve you know the
problem now see now you could say as
well that this is important in solving
this because if this is not soled it can
affect effective Handover okay during
shift and this can overall affect the
patient you know diagnosis and
management or the result that we give
out okay for example now when you say
for example I want you to think about a
scenario imagine something like in blood
B okay maybe there is a a patient with
maybe um let's say something like um
maybe Auto antibodies or maybe even
General even IG antibodies okay whatever
there's information basically that you
need to pass to another patient another
member of Staff if you are having
problem with that member of staff
or that member of staff is difficult to
deal with if you don't manage it very
well you may not give that effective
Handover do you even know something like
maybe analyzer breakdown and you may
have sorted it out but you need to tell
the person taking over from you this is
what happened but if you having issue
with that person you may not say it you
see now you can bring in all these
examples okay now you can say for
example okay this will help to ensure
that we we deliver a good and make sure
that the laboratory are with confirmant
will produce a reliable and you know
good result and that means that whenever
you counter a a member of staff that is
difficult to deal with where possible
you try to see how you can resolve that
if it means may be communicating to the
line manager you know or senior member
of St to resolve that that will be that
will be good for the patient because for
example you cannot bring in how that can
impact on the patient result is see it
now imagine that is a patient that has
low hemoglobin because I'm having
problem with you and I didn't tell you
that this patient is having hogl low
hemoglobin to prepare you of what you
may expect that now has affect has
affected the patient this is these are
the examples you need to bring in you
know there are so many of them I may
want to say but time will fail me to say
that so what I want you to know is that
when you go for biomedical scientist
interview question and you say is a
general question they asking you or you
say is a behavioral question they asking
you or you say is a tech technical
question they asking you I want you to
know you can drive that intervie the way
you want by bringing in your experiences
by using the word for example okay
bringing your experience bringing what
you've learned okay into any question
don't wait until the question comes
direct if it comes direct that is fine
you can then answer it okay but if it
comes like that behavioral question and
all of that find a way to bring your
experience into that question okay now
another thing I would like to say you
need to know when to say I don't know
can I try you know you see sometimes
when we go for interview we are under
tension to answer every question I have
said this before you don't have to get a
job because you answer all the questions
no just demonstrate that you you can be
easily trained just demonstrate that you
know what is going on overview generally
you will get the job okay now what am I
trying to say if they ask you any
question and you don't you know you
don't know it okay don't try to answer
what you don't know you are better of
saying can I try then you can try what
it mean that if you even if you don't
get it right they don't have to worry
about it because you've already
acknowledged that you want to try if you
also get it right is also good for you
but don't put yourself under tension of
trying to answer something that you
don't quite know okay now the final
thing I'm going to say is this I want
you to know that sometimes if you go for
interv and they ask you a question and
it's like you know that thing but you
can't remember again don't be under
tension trying to mble trying to gaze
and gaze and be making mistakes okay you
are better on putting your composure and
saying I think I know this but I can't
remember at the moment but what I do
know about this is this this that that
they may be pushing you and pushing you
if you don't know it if if if because
sometimes what the panel do is to push
you by maybe suggesting something that
can help you to remember if irrespective
of their suggestion you still don't
remember still maintain that you can't
you know you've heard about it and you
can't remember at the moment but this is
what you know about this when you do
these things hopefully in this 2024 and
of course in years to come as well this
will help you to be able to increase
your chances of getting a job and this
is how to answer biomedical scientist
interview question don't wait until the
question comes direct whether it is
direct or not direct bring your
experiences into that question you can
decide what to answer in a question when
it is behavioral okay when it is not
direct but you are the one that will
bring the example what it means is that
when you go through my YouTube videos
learn those things that I'm saying and
know them for yourself okay don't just
cram them know them very very well that
way it will give you the opportunity to
be able to create a lot of scenarios and
give a lot of examples where possible
now the final thing I really want want
to say okay I don't want to forget this
is this don't try to you know when I
give when I make video like I'm making
now I'm spending my time to
explain that is good for teaching but
when you go for interview remember you
are not the only person that
interviewing so you need to learn how to
be comprehensive and detailed okay don't
try to explain everything and everything
and keep taking long and long what they
are marking is the points you are
raising now pick all of if you mention
seven points you can pick two and say
for example and explain the two leave
the rest okay leave the rest five let me
give you example and this is what and
this is where I'm going to stop if
you've gone for an interview they ask
you you notice that your quality control
sample fell what are you going to do now
that question there are a lot of things
you can say remember what I told you if
you start answering everything up if you
that if you start saying analyzer
reagent you start saying everything
together why that is the point but
you've not answered that question
sequentially so if you want to answer
the question you need to know that for
analyzer to fail quality control okay if
a quality control fail there are three
main thing that can affect it is either
is a control sample itself or it is the
reagent or it is the analyzer itself
does that make sense okay so now even
under each of these there are other
things like under the control sample you
can talk about contamination is the
sample contaminated you can talk about
under fi or insufficient you can talk
about wrong storage temperature of the
sample you can talk about maybe left at
the room temperature for a very long
time okay you can talk about the
expiring date you can talk about the lot
number you can talk about there are many
things you can talk about okay now why
that is important obviously the same
there are so many things you can talk
about um under um reent and of course
the analyzer don't go and start saying
and start explaining all of them give
them the point then take two now let me
give you the example you could say if a
qualty control sample fail there are
three men that can cause it either is a
problem from the control sample or the
analyzer reagent okay or possibly the
analyzer itself under the control sample
you can mention insufficient under few
insufficient contaminated you know
mention all of those things that I've
said on my previous video okay now you
can say for example then explain to and
move on come to the reagent and say the
same thing for example explain one or
two move to the analyzer and say the
same thing and then say for example
explain one or two and move on okay
don't try to dwell and keep explaining
each of the point it might make that
interview boring and then it might also
H make you to get an expression from the
panel that may boot you off I hope I've
been able to help you guys today you
know um maybe that I'm thinking on the
best way I can help you guys this year
hopefully I'm going to find a better way
one of the things I'm considering is to
start making video in form of revision
okay that way it will help you guys to
be able to understand better right um
