there i'm christine dunbar from speechmodification.com

and this is my smart american accent
training welcome to our word of the day series
series
where we take your requests for words
you'd like help to pronounce in american english
english
today is a word that has been requested
several times
and it's a challenging word and i
understand why people are asking for
help with it
it's the word turtle and turtle is
difficult because it has
the r and l combination as well as
the t in the middle of words which can be
be
different in american english than in
other dialects of english
so let's break it down help you say the
sounds in this word
put them together to be able to
pronounce turtle
smoothly and easily in your everyday speech
speech
the word turtle has first syllable stress
stress
so my tur syllable is longer and my
dull syllable is shorter and unstressed
that means i have a tense er
sound in turtle i kind of like to think
of the sound in turtle as though i were
not really saying much about vowel but
i'm saying tertur
usually if you start with the er
turtle you might find it a little bit easier
easier
if you struggle with the er sound and
american r i suggest using my american r
playlist to give you some hints and tips
as to
how to correctly make that tight back
american arm
typical errors will be to use more of an
uh sound that would be more british
turtle uh
or um for some people just who can't
make that r they make more of an
uh sound we don't want that also a
rolled r um some languages make the r
with the front of the tongue rather than
in the tight back position
of the american r that would sound like turtle
turtle
instead of turtle so again
once you can say your er add your tea and
and
i actually recommend starting with the
er because it's easier to do
er ter than to start on ter
if i start on my t my old way of saying
the r
is more likely to come out if i start on
r and then try to keep my tongue in that position
position
er it's going to be easier to say the
rest of the word
the letter second letter t in turtle
sounds more like a d sound it's called a
flap t
my voice is on i lift my tongue up i
don't build up a lot of pressure there
it's just a nice light d
dull dull turtle then
i have a schwa before my dark american
l that sounds like an uh sound turtle
and then lastly the l at the end of
turtle is what's called the dark
l or final l and we go pretty much
almost from the d right into the l dull
but the difference between the dark l
and the light l is that the back of my
tongue needs to stay down
so if i'm saying a word like light or
like my whole tongue can lift
and it touches behind my teeth if i'm
saying the
oh from turtle turtle just the tip of my
tongue lifts
behind my teeth and the back of my
tongue stays down more in this
uh or the schwa position you can try
just saying
uh and then or
dull to get that sound again i do have a
video explaining the different types of
american owl
and some videos specifically for l at
the ends of words to help you with turtle
turtle
and other words where that's challenging
you'll also hear
this flap t and l combination
the dull
in words like saddle or seattle we often
spell that with ttle
bottle etc so you can get some extra
help for words like seattle
and little and bottle in my video for
those words as well
so turtle a lot of things going on here
obviously we have
the er the t the flap the combination of
all those can be challenging
so take it slow build from the places
where you have the most trouble
if the dark l gives you trouble try old
turtle if the r gives you trouble start there
there
er turtle
once i can say turtle by itself i do
want to try to slowly build it into some phrases
phrases
because you might find you master the
word turtle and then you're going to
talk and you try to use
turtle and it's still a struggle or it
still comes out the old way
so say say the word many times and then
build it into some phrases
a small turtle a green turtle we saw a
turtle at the zoo
there's a turtle in the yard what's the
difference between a turtle
and a tortoise okay so
i hope that helped you with that
difficult word turtle and thank you for
