amen John's second letter is much less
lengthy and certainly less complicated
than his first letter it is important to
remember that this letter is a private
piece of Correspondence to a person
rather than to a local church it is a
that has great application to our age of undiscerning
undiscerning
Tolerance a much needed balance between
truth and love is set forth for all to
read and heed the word truth is
mentioned five times as is the word love
in a piece of Correspondence only 13
verses in length as John writes to this
Christian mother his desire is that she
continue in the truth walking in love
and standing against error he offers a
balanced perspective on life love and
truth practice and Doctrine walking and
standing accepting and rejecting as you
come across this letter you will quickly
sense the abiding principles that apply
to our day as well every spring
Something Beautiful turns into something
tragic for people who live near
mountaineous areas the tragedy begins
when deep mounts of snow begin to th and
torrential spring rains Begin to Fall
the beautiful colorful rivers that are
often the source of Commerce and Beauty
for the cities swell and overflow their
Banks beautiful hamlets and Villages
that once housed and harbored life are
now threatened by Death
thanks to the flooding River by and by
the old River begins to rag as it leaves
its banks and moves into places it was
near never meant to be some residents
flee their homes if possible when it
isn't possible to flee they hope to
survive the flood almost without
exception year after year Springtime
becomes a time of mass destruction those
those beautiful rivers that are so
enjoyable and delightful in the summer
and fall of the Year carry within them
the potential for tragedy and
Calamity love is a lot like a river it
is essential for Life there is nothing
more beautiful or essential for survival
than the expression of Love however love
must remain within its banks if it is to
do the job it was intended to do you see
when love moves behind its proper
boundaries tragedies occur and in some
cases even death threatens picture is in
your mind the River of Love must be held
within its banks truth on the one side
and discernment on the other as long as
Love Remains within those Banks it's
beautiful we not only survive we Thrive
because love is continuing to bring its
flow of Hope encouragement and
affirmation into our and others lives
but when it swells beond its proper
limits tragedy
strikes periodically the Bible
illustrates the importance of love being
guarded by truth and discernment but
only on as few occasions is this
particular subject addressed in
concentrated form one such place where
the limits of Love or emphasized is in
the second letter of John each of John's
last two letters that is second and
third John can be meditated in less than
2 minutes they are tiny letters more
like oversized
postcards if you had the original
documents you would most likely
discovered that the entire letters were
written on single sheets of laas because
neither one is more than 300 words in
the Greek language and yet God has
chosen to preserve for us these two
letters the Bible's briefest books if
ever small packages held great surprices
and delights these letters certainly are
a case in point there are marvelous
messages of instruction for God's church
I suspect that if more careful attention
had been paid to second and third Johan
throughout the years of church history
the River of Love would not have left
its banks quite as often as we have
observed it to do and Truth mixed with
discernment would have been demonstrated
more often the writer of this letter
identified himself in the very first
verse as the Elder more than like ly
this was a reference to the writers age
rather than to his official
position though some Bible scholars
believe that John functioned as an elder
in his later years perhaps in the
Ephesian Church the Elder has long been
accepted as the Apostle John the same
man who wrote the Gospel of John as well
as 1 and third John and the Book of Revelation
Revelation
at the time of the writing of this
letter around 90
ad apostal John was one of the last
living Witnesses who had literally
walked with Jesus by now most of the
other disciples had been martyred John
had been banished to pmov to die on an
island little did those who put him
there realized that his writings would
survive and continue to feed and bless
the church through the
centuries Christians are in silence
simply because they have been
impressed sometimes as a result of
adversity their message is set loose and
widely affirmed even though the
persecutors think they are effectively
squelching it persecution has never
succeeded in overcoming the church just
as Jesus Promised it wouldn't on the
contrary persecution has purified the
church and helped to strengthen it and
as in the case of John persecution
simply resulted in the message being
spread even further The Chosen Lady of
verse one has provoked a lot of interest
on the part of New Testament Scholars
and students there are many fine people
who teach and write books about the
scriptures who believe John is using
symbolic language to refer to a specific
Church in his day on the other hand
there are those I'm among them who
believe that the chosen lady was a woman
who lived in the first century it's
interesting to note that the children of
the chosen lady are mentioned in this
first verse and her sister is referred
to in verse 30 and in my judgment it
would be highly unusual to address a
letter to a church and refer to her
children and to her sister
well some maintain that the chosen
sister of verse 13 is a figurative
description of another local church a sister
sister
congregation it makes more sense to me
when we simply take it literally as a
reference to another Christian woman as
the saying goes when Common Sense makes
good sense seek no other sense that's
helpful advice to all who wish to
interpret God's word with accuracy
I believe this chosen lady was someone
who opened her home to the church as a
place to meet because there were no
official Church buildings at that time
neither were there complete copies of
the scriptures available by and large
Believers didn't have assess to much
teaching there were few long-standing
pastorates either during those times the
gospel was taken from place to place by
traveling evangelists and teachers who
visited from house to house and from
City to city as they thought God's word
to God's people the church was in a
state of flux by the end of the first
century it was a stormy time with her
sees On The Rise and persecution Common
Place not having a place of identity the
church lacked roots and therefore recur
the service of certain gift men who
traveled to bring the truth to God's
people in a time when there were no
comfortable hotels or in Travelers were
often accommodated in homes John R W
start described the situation for
Christians as they travel from place to
place it was natural that Christian
people on their travels should be given
Hospitality by members of local churches
there are many traces in the New
Testament of this
custom such Hospitality was often open
to abuse there was the false teacher on
the one hand who post as a Christian
should Hospitality be extended to him
and how would you know there was also
the more obvious false prophet with
false credentials who was dominated less
by the Creed he had to offer then by the
material profit and free board and
launching he hoped to gain it is against
this background that we must read the
second and third Epistle of John so John
wrote to a woman who very likely opened
her home somewhat indiscriminately to
teachers who stopped on their way
through the town where she lived we
don't know the woman's name or where she
lived we therefore don't know the church
or the specific situation except for the
few things John says about the false
teachers who were traveling through this
woman demonstrated sincere Christian
Hospitality she gave herself to the
ministry of entertaining these
inent evangelists her intentions were
pure she wished to demonstrate the love
of Christ by being hospitable to
strangers her Christian love however
wasn't always accompanied by clear
thinking for she
carelessly received anyone into her home
she expressed compassion without
balancing it with a commitment to
maintaining solid truth she had the
problem of misplaced
Hospitality John challenged her to add a
heaping helping of discernment to her
plate of
hospitality I suggest that John shares
three abiding principles in this letter
along with a corresponding command first
loving others is a fundamental
expression of authentic
Christianity its corresponding command
is this let's continue walking in love
one of the greatest messages needed in
our generation is to walk in love
Christians let's walk in love the better
you know the truth the greater Your Love
ought to be let your love flow you will
win over some so many more by simply
being gracious and loving to all you
meet second embracing the truth is
equally essential the command is this
continue to take an uncompromising stand
against error we are always to be
prepared to give the reason for the hope
hope that we have with gentleness and
yet with
certainity we must know the truth and be
able to defended with the mixture of
boldness and Grace third when error is
detected love must be kept within its
boundaries the corresponding command is
this let's maintain a balance or we won't
won't
survive the challenge for the Christian
today is to know the truth and take a
stand for it without compromise at the
same time we must extend love and walk
in Grace we must keep love within the BS
of Truth and discernment and learn how
to live in the dynamic tension between
grace and truth this is the lasting
lesson of second John so we must not
blindly love everyone you must show the
love which is given by our Lord to all
but be careful
about the false teachers and false
prophets and you get the guidance of our
Lord and guide others in his path so
that's it for today's video I hope so
you got some hopeful verses out of this
outline of this second John book keep
meditating Lots first and keep praying
for others we'll meet in the next video
of the outline of the next book of this
