0:07 hello mahendran finally tracks down the
0:09 sound to the remains of the sixth
0:19 [Music]
0:27 floor the tra woman is a Japanese
0:30 National called shisui Nakajima she has
0:33 been terribly
0:41 injured as The Rescuers struggle to free
0:44 the stricken shizui they hear a second
0:46 cry but it's hard to locate where the
0:48 sound is coming
0:50 from we heard toong toong but we were
0:53 looking around he all rumbles on
0:56 there then one of the rescue teams spots
0:59 a stick being poke through the rubble as
1:02 they begin digging a heart- rening sight
1:04 confronts The
1:06 Rescuers I were surprise there was this
1:09 baby and the mother so we we took the
1:12 baby
1:13 out uh and I was so surprised that there
1:17 was no injuries on the
1:20 baby the baby n Hamida just 16 months
1:24 old is soon safe in the hands of her
1:26 Rescuers and apparently unfaced by her
1:29 ass astonishing
1:30 [Music]
1:44 Escape meanwhile the bomber men have at
1:46 last freed the injured Japanese woman
1:49 shizui a crane has reached the site and
1:52 she is delicately lifted to safy
1:58 [Music]
2:08 [Applause]
2:09 [Music]
2:15 15 minutes later the mother of the
2:17 rescued baby is at last winched to
2:20 Freedom she is an Indonesian maid called
2:23 Umi Rashida who had been trapped inside
2:25 an apartment when the building collapsed
2:32 [Music]
2:40 for the rescue teens and waiting
2:42 relatives the Deliverance of these three
2:44 survivors is
2:46 [Music]
2:49 [Applause]
2:52 Electrify we were we were quite happy at
2:54 that time thinking that the rest could
2:57 be found but The Rescuers now face a the
3:00 problem no one can account for how many
3:02 people were in Block one when it
3:05 collapsed obviously the numbers it it
3:08 was a total unknown it could have been
3:09 anything from 150 down to to zero uh
3:13 obviously people were going to be there
3:14 cuz it was still a lunge time on the
3:16 Saturday so um but we didn't know how
3:18 many we just really didn't initially and
3:21 an even more urgent question is are any
3:25 still alive
3:28 [Music]
3:30 it's day one of the Highland tow
3:33 rescue hordes of Television Crews and
3:36 journalists have staked out the site and
3:38 the news of the catastrophe is fast
3:40 Rippling out across
3:43 quala people who have relatives and
3:46 friends in Highland towers are horrified
3:48 to find out that they may have loved
3:49 ones trapped in the
3:56 wreckage so we was watching the Hindi
3:59 movie then got breaking news they say
4:02 the condominium
4:04 collapse my leg start shaking and all
4:07 that you
4:08 know rahat's daughter Anna her British
4:11 son-in-law Robin and her grandson were
4:14 all in Block one at the time it
4:18 collapsed in front the TV waiting
4:20 listening news because a Japanese lady
4:23 was safe and one Indian lady and her
4:27 daughter was safe so we were was hoping
4:30 maybe she also was safe just hoping and
4:34 praying that she survived this you know
4:37 you know I mean it could be a miracle
4:41 somewhere that she could be
4:42 alive for those watching and waiting
4:45 this stirring news of three people
4:47 rescued brings a surge of
4:50 Hope Dr ridwan Baka is waiting to hear
4:53 about his sister Rosina and her husband
4:55 Carlos
4:56 Musa my feeling at that time of course
4:59 was of uh hope hope that the uh people
5:03 who were in the building at that point
5:05 in time Were Somehow still
5:08 alive Dr ridwan volunteers as a rescuer
5:12 and he joins the many other civilians
5:14 who offer to help the
5:15 [Music]
5:17 Bomberman another volunteer Mike Rickard
5:20 a safety engineer is shocked by what he
5:23 finds so just try and get try and get
5:25 hold of a um tractor I just went up and
5:28 said can I help him some and there
5:30 didn't seem to be any coordinated
5:33 activities nobody seemed to be taking
5:35 charge it's what I call fighting fires
5:37 one saying oh there's some problem here
5:39 everybody rushes there there was a
5:41 problem over there everybody rushes
5:42 there it it was obviously disorganized
5:44 totally absolutely
5:49 disorder hours after the collapse much
5:52 still needs
5:53 improvising the rescue teams depend
5:55 heavily on the generosity of local
5:57 individuals and companies who donate
5:59 fight his
6:02 equipment they responded very generously
6:06 especially the business Community they
6:08 send in their heavy trucks together with
6:11 the
6:12 operators we have to open our mouth for
6:14 have it'll come because the ruins of
6:17 block one remain so unstable there is
6:20 one simple piece of kit that is urgently
6:22 needed on site we need to have Acro
6:25 jaacks which is these basically a form
6:28 of scaffolding which
6:30 allows separation of of concrete
6:34 structures with hundreds of Acro jaacks
6:36 in place the teams can enter deeper into
6:39 the ruins without fear of further
6:42 [Music]
6:44 collapse we went in between those uh
6:47 collapsed walls and carefully we were
6:50 removing stones and all this trying to
6:52 get access into the building to remove
6:55 the rubble uh initially there was only
6:58 one way and that was picking rocks up
7:00 and pass him down the
7:03 line we didn't have the luxury of time
7:06 we were just going in and
7:11 searching in the evening of the first
7:14 day prime minister Dr mahater arrives
7:17 ours is now an international news story
7:20 and Dr mahater calls for help from
7:22 around the
7:23 world the Prime Minister also wants
7:25 answers how many people are still
7:27 trapped inside the building and why did
7:30 it
7:32 collapse as it happens an engineer from
7:34 the public works department has already
7:36 arrived on site to find
7:40 answers my first question that came to
7:42 my mind was how did the building which
7:45 stood over the last 10 12 years could
7:47 have fa now the rescue operation will
7:51 destroy vital Clues so Dr asby must work
7:55 fast we need to have some kind of photo
7:59 graphy evidence because in the C rescue
8:02 when you try to move things from the
8:03 rumble you probably destroy some
8:06 evidence Dr asby makes an alarming
8:09 Discovery he can hear water flowing down
8:12 the slope towards the rescue site which
8:14 he fears might trigger another deadly
8:17 Landslide so he takes immediate steps to
8:20 stem the
8:22 flow we had to do all that was required
8:25 of the Public Works to ensure the safety
8:28 at that time of the search and rescue to
8:31 prevent further movement of the of the
8:33 slope behind the building it's just
8:35 after midnight the start of day two of
8:37 the rescue The Rescuers received
8:40 dispiriting news shisui Nakajima the
8:44 Japanese woman rescued the day before
8:46 has died from her injuries in hospital
8:49 the news is a bitter
8:52 blow a mass of personal belongings has
8:55 been removed from the ruins of block one
8:58 painful reminders of lost
9:03 homes it's believed that there are 36
9:06 people trapped inside the ruins but
9:08 there is still uncertainty about these
9:11 [Music]
9:12 numbers by days two and three
9:15 international rescue teams are
9:16 responding to Malaysia's call for
9:18 help we have no experience for a
9:23 disaster of this magnitude you know
9:26 experts fly in from Singapore France and
9:29 Japan these highly experienced teams
9:32 bring to the disaster site a battery of
9:34 high-tech search and rescue
9:38 equipment the reinforced teams focused
9:40 their attention on the service area
9:42 stairwell that once linked The Two
9:44 Towers of block
9:47 one this is where residents trying to
9:49 escape should have
9:52 fled people would have as soon as the
9:55 the building started to move and shudder
9:58 um would have tried to escape
10:00 um and obviously their form of Escape
10:02 would be the stairs they would be
10:03 somewhere on that staircase Rescuers
10:06 will tunnel towards the service block
10:08 area from opposite
10:09 [Music]
10:11 sides the International Teams use search
10:14 cameras and extension of the human eye
10:16 to peer into voids inside the collapse
10:22 structure the French deploy their
10:25 tracker dogs able to detect any human
10:27 Trace
10:31 it's hoped that these new strategies
10:33 will speed up the rescue of any
10:36 survivors time is always the factor that
10:41 all Rescuers must take into
10:43 consideration you fight against
10:46 time we recognize that that uh um the a
10:51 human being can only survive for so long
10:53 dehydration is is the worst thing to to
10:55 fear of course time is
10:57 critical as The Rescuer redouble their
11:00 efforts the nagging anxiety that the
11:02 other two blocks might suddenly fail
11:05 deepens Engineers have set up monitoring
11:08 equipment to check for any sign of
11:10 movement on day three an alarm is raised
11:13 from block two sending everyone's
11:15 scurrying for
11:18 shelter it's collapsing it's collapsing
11:21 and uh everybody just
11:24 ran can you imagine The Rescuers all
11:27 have to evacuate and quickly with
11:31 exit but block two remains resolutely
11:35 vertical and so chai Hawk confronts the
11:37 man who sounded the
11:39 [Music]
11:40 alarm oh why have you hit the alarm and
11:43 he pointed out to the
11:45 building and actually the clouds were
11:48 moving and he thought that the building
11:50 was coming down it was optic illusion it
11:52 could be stress so immediately I have
11:55 him replaced and I said look you can't
11:58 have such thing going
12:00 point1 on the rescue side work
12:06 resumes the French team used sensitive
12:08 listening devices to try and find sounds
12:11 of Life deep inside the collapsed
12:14 Tower this thing for very specific sound
12:18 patterns um and the way they do it is by
12:22 inducing um a series of of knocks which
12:26 have a normal response now um if I gave
12:31 her the normal reaction would
12:34 be and that's the sort of pattern that
12:37 they would
12:38 use on the evening of the third day at
12:41 7:30 there's a sudden Buzz of
12:44 excitement a member of the French team
12:46 hears an answering pattern of
12:50 knocks the whole operation cease to
12:53 allow time to hear it
12:56 clearly the knocking sound is faint and
12:58 intim
12:59 but Mike Ricard has never doubted what
13:01 he
13:03 heard it was a very distinct reply and I
13:07 listened to it and that reply was
13:09 repeated and repeated it it sort of made
13:12 the hairs of the back of my neck stand
13:13 up I mean I could hear somebody
13:15 somewhere in the
13:17 vicinity um was replying to this induced
13:22 KN the sound galvanizes The Rescuers and
13:26 raises hope among the waiting relatives
13:30 they heard knockings and all I sort of
13:32 believed
13:33 that because it is possible for somebody
13:36 to actually be knocking and respond to
13:39 what the people are doing on top that
13:41 gave me
13:43 hope now all of Malaysia prays that The
13:46 Rescuers have at last found another
13:48 Survivor of Highland
13:50 [Music]
13:54 Towers 5 days after the catastrophic
13:57 collapse of Highland Towers blocked 1
13:59 the rescue operation continues day and
14:03 night so far just three of the residents
14:06 who are inside at the time the tower
14:08 collapsed have been found alive one of
14:11 them shisui Nakajima has died from her
14:13 injuries in
14:17 hospital but now the French rescue team
14:20 has detected the sound of knocking from
14:22 somewhere deep inside the rubble and
14:24 have been using the knock for over a day
14:26 to try to locate one or more survivors
14:32 The Rescuers know that this fragile
14:34 sound is the last chance to find anyone
14:37 [Music]
14:39 alive uh it came from within the
14:41 structure that's all I could say where
14:44 within the structure don't know because
14:46 the way that sound travels through
14:47 concrete is is weird and wonderful you
14:50 can't say it's over there and how far
14:52 over there you just don't
14:55 know we do not give up so easily we will
14:58 continue even we can
