this is an induction film which will
guide you through your safe visit to
denton today
it's important that you pay attention to
the rules of our site to ensure the
safety of you and everyone else whilst here
here
denton is a busy site with plant
movements deliveries and a whole array
of contractor activities so it's
essential that you stay focused at all
times when on site
it's essential that you sign in when you
arrive on site so that it's known that
you're here there are two signing in
books within the main building reception
one for visitors and the other for
parking is provided with the marine
house complex for visitors to site all
drivers are asked to reverse park where
possible to ensure the safest visibility
when leaving the space
special permission is required to park
out on the wharf to keep the area as
clear as possible
this request should be made to the
the maximum speed limit at denton is set
at 10 miles an hour and must be adhered
to at all times
this applies to all vehicles and plant
and care should be taken to ensure the
fire alarm tests are conducted on site
every tuesday at 9 30 in the morning and
you'll be advised on the day if this is
the case
if while working in the marine house
complex you hear the fire alarm sirens sounding
sounding
please calmly leave the building via the
nearest fire exit
you must proceed across the car park to
the north northwest corner where the
muster point is marked
fire marshals will ensure the building
is clear and you'll be advised when it's
safe to re-enter the building
the port of london authority has zero
tolerance policy to drugs and alcohol if
it's suspected that a contractor or
member of their staff has reported for
work on any pla premises or vessel under
the influence of alcohol or illicit
drugs they'll be asked to leave immediately
immediately
the bringing of alcohol or illicit
substances onto any pla premises or
personal protective equipment or ppe is
essential if you intend to leave the
main building areas
a thick red line is marked on the ground
with the words ppe zone to warn all
personnel on site that they are about to
enter an area shared with plant
movements and other potential dangers
minimum ppe for these areas and anyone
entering the wharf is a hard hat hi-vis
vest or coat and appropriate safety footwear
footwear
other levels of ppe may be required
depending on the activities you're
undertaking this could include ear
defenders dust masks or safety glasses
if working on the pontoons or transiting
on or off of vessels it's essential that
you should wear an appropriately fitted
automatic life jacket with crotch strap
these life jackets should be provided by
your employer and be regularly
maintained and certified
signs mark the site to show you're
entering a life jacket area when
safe walkways have been marked on the
ground in yellow to guide all visitors
safely around the site and should be
used wherever possible
operators of vehicles and plant should
take care and expect to encounter
pedestrians in these areas at all times
a public footpath runs across the site
to the wharf so please approach with caution

gates have been provided on site to keep
vehicle movements separate from people
it's essential that all personnel stick
to the walkways and use the pedestrian gates

anyone seen walking through a vehicle
welfare facilities are provided on the
wharf in the form of a combined unisex
toilets and a tea room with changing areas

all contractors are welcome to use this
facility but are asked to keep it clean
and tidy to ensure it's in the best
condition for all users
smoking is not permitted within any of
the offices sheds or other indoor areas
those wishing to smoke should do so in
the designated smoking areas please ask
a member of staff if unsure
for any private vessel the owner or
agent must first complete the form
application for undertaking works at
denton wharf
this form identifies the extent of the
work and allows the pla to understand
and control the associated risks
any variation to the agreed works must
be highlighted to and approved by the
yard manager prior to commencement
if during an activity that you're
undertaking you see something unsafe you
have the authority to stop works our

manner and ensure that no harm is caused
most of the time a simple fix can be
found and works can continue when it's
safe to do so
at denton we have many items of plant
including fork trucks vessel travel
hoists a mobile crane a tractor and
numerous trailers
these items are operated both within the
marine house complex and on the wharf
it's essential that all visitors and
contractors are vigilant and
appropriately dressed at all times to
at denton we have the ability to lift
out vessels up to 70 tons and sit them
down on the wharf to be worked on
the specialist plant and equipment used
in this operation is only to be used by
the trained personnel who have extensive
experience in this operation
when vessels are being moved you'll be
expected to keep clear to ensure the
operators and banksmen can do their job
safely and effectively
once a vessel is sat down no one should
touch or interfere with the support
equipment as this may result in a
within the yard there are a number of
access steps to provide vessel owners
safe access aboard their work areas
these access steps are a shared resource
and unless clearly not in use should be
left alongside the vessel they are against
against
if you cannot find spare access steps
please ask the yard manager will do
their best to assist you
the use of ladders for access to vessels
is not permitted on site
any contractor wishing to construct
access systems on site such as
scaffolding should consult the yard
manager for permission prior to commencement

working at height is defined by the
working at height regulations 2005 and
must be adhered to at all times
this includes but is not limited to
activities such as being on deck without
edge protection and climbing on the
wheelhouse of vessels
appropriate equipment and safety
measures must be put in place to ensure
all work activities should be
accompanied with a risk assessment and
method statement
contractors should have their
documentation checked before arrival on site
site
prior to any work activities starting
briefings or toolbox talks are held
remember your health and safety and that
of others is your responsibility
any contractor intending to undertake
any hot work must first obtain a permit
from the appropriate port of london
authority manager for those works
hot work includes welding burning
cutting grinding and similar activities
the completed permit will ensure that
all the necessary planning stages have
taken place and that hot work is safe to proceed

at the end of the works and this will be
explained to you at the point of issue

eliminate them in the future

from site in a controlled manner and
