Hello, my name is Carmen.
I am thirty-eight years old.
I am a nurse in a large hospital.
I am also a single mother.
I have two wonderful children.
Today I want to tell you about my craziest Tuesday.
It was a day that changed everything for us.
THE START OF THE DAY
That Tuesday I started my work at six in the morning.
I worked twelve full hours at the hospital.
We need the extra money for the house.
My daughter Camila is three years old.
My son Mateo is sixteen years old.
Camila goes to daycare every day.
Mateo goes to high school.
When I work long shifts, I always think about my children.
I wonder if Camila is eating well.
I wonder if Mateo is doing his homework.
Being a single mother means constantly worrying.
It is very difficult to be everywhere.
I remember that day I attended to many difficult patients.
An elderly lady broke her hip.
A small child had a very high fever.
A young man arrived by ambulance.
He had had a car accident.
The hospital is always full of emergencies.
The work never stops.
THE THREE TERRIBLE CALLS
At six in the evening I finished my shift.
I walked to my car in the parking lot.
I was very tired but happy.
I was thinking about getting home soon.
I wanted to cook something simple for dinner.
I wanted to spend quiet time with Camila.
Mateo had soccer practice that afternoon.
The house would finally be quiet.
Then my phone started ringing.
The first call was from the daycare.
The teacher told me something terrible.
Camila had swallowed a small toy.
She was having trouble breathing properly.
My heart stopped completely.
I ran to my car immediately.
Five minutes later, the phone rang again.
It was Mateo's school this time.
The principal spoke to me in a serious voice.
Mateo had gotten into a fight with another student.
He was suspended from school.
I needed to pick him up immediately from the building.
My hands started shaking strongly.
Before I could process this news, the phone rang for the third time.
It was Mrs. Chen this time.
She is the neighbor of my mom Ana.
She told me that mom had fallen.
She was in the bathroom of her house.
She couldn't get up off the floor.
She was conscious but very scared.
THE IMPOSSIBLE DECISION
I stood still in the cold parking lot.
I had the keys in my trembling hand.
I had three different emergencies that day.
They were in three different places in the city.
I only had one old car.
I was just one tired person.
How could I be in three places?
First I quickly called my ex-husband.
He is the children's father.
His phone went straight to voicemail.
He always disappears when we need him most.
Then I called my dear sister.
But she lives in another state.
I called my best friend Janet.
She was in surgery at the hospital.
I sat down in my old car.
I cried for five long minutes.
Then I took several deep breaths.
I made the most difficult decision.
Camila had the most urgent emergency.
She was too small to defend herself.
She was having trouble breathing normally.
RUSHING TO THE DAYCARE
I drove to the daycare as fast as possible.
I probably broke some speed limits.
On the way I called the school.
I begged them to take care of Mateo.
I just needed one more hour.
I also called Mrs. Chen.
I explained my completely desperate situation to her.
When I arrived at the daycare, I found Camila.
She was crying but breathing better.
The teacher explained the situation to me.
The toy had moved in her throat.
We still needed to go to the hospital.
She needed X-rays to be sure.
Camila hugged me tightly immediately.
She said in a small voice: "Mommy, I was scared."
I told her everything would be okay.
I promised her that mommy would always protect her.
But inside I was scared too.
I was very scared of everything.
AT THE HOSPITAL WITH CAMILA
I took Camila to the hospital where I work.
The doctors and nurses know me well.
They attended to us quickly because of that.
While we waited for the X-rays, I kept making calls.
I was very desperate to fix everything.
Mateo sent me text messages.
He was very angry with me.
He told me I had abandoned him.
He told me I was a bad mother.
His words hurt me a lot.
But I knew he was scared too.
Mrs. Chen called me again.
My mom Ana had locked the door.
She was embarrassed about her fall.
She didn't want anyone to see her.
They could hear her crying from outside.
My heart was breaking completely.
THE MOST DIFFICULT MOMENT
I went to the hospital bathroom.
I cried silently for ten minutes.
I felt like a terrible mother.
I couldn't take care of all my loved ones.
It was too much for one person.
Then I remembered something important.
I remembered all the people I had helped.
For years I had helped coworkers.
I had helped neighbors in emergencies.
I had helped other single mothers.
Maybe it was time to ask for help.
First I called my colleague Janet.
I asked her for a very big favor.
I gave her my spare key.
I asked her to go to mom's house.
Janet said yes immediately.
She didn't ask difficult questions.
Then I called Mateo's soccer coach.
His name is David and he is very kind.
I explained my desperate situation to him.
I asked him to pick up Mateo.
David said he would take him to eat.
He would talk to him about the fight.
THE SUPPORT NETWORK WORKS
My plan started working well.
Janet arrived at mom's house.
She helped Ana get up.
She stayed with her all afternoon.
They talked about many important things.
David picked up Mateo from school.
He took him to eat hamburgers.
He listened to Mateo's full story.
It turned out Mateo had defended a small child.
Older students were bothering him.
My supervisor, Doctor Reeves, expedited the X-rays.
It was a special professional courtesy.
The results came out well quickly.
The toy had passed completely.
Camila was perfectly fine.
THE IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS
While Camila slept after the procedure, I made important calls.
First I spoke honestly with Mateo.
I explained to him why I had chosen Camila.
He understood the situation better.
He told me about the real fight.
Mateo had seen some big students.
They were bothering a first-grade boy.
The boy was crying a lot.
Mateo intervened to help him.
The big students got angry.
They started fighting with Mateo.
Then I spoke with mom Ana.
Janet passed me the phone.
Mom confessed something important to me.
She had been hiding her problems.
It was very hard for her to do simple tasks.
She was afraid of falling again.
COMING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY
I picked up Mateo from the restaurant.
David had talked with him.
Mateo had processed his anger better.
He understood I had made a difficult decision.
He wasn't angry with me anymore.
We went together to mom Ana's house.
Camila was awake and happy.
She talks about her "big medical adventure".
Mateo was very gentle with his grandmother.
He could see her vulnerability now.
Ana prepared hot tea for us.
We sat in her family room.
We had a very honest conversation.
We talked about aging and independence.
We talked about asking for help when we need it.
THE REAL CONVERSATION
Ana admitted she needed more help.
It was hard for her to bathe alone.
It was hard for her to cook meals.
She was afraid of falling again.
She had been pretending to be okay.
Mateo offered something very mature.
He said he could visit her after school.
He could be part of her community service.
The school had reduced his suspension.
He could do community service instead.
I realized something very important.
I couldn't do everything alone.
It was okay to ask others for help.
I had built good relationships over the years.
It was time to use that network.
THE NEW NORMAL
One week later, everything changed for the better.
I hired a helper for mom Ana.
She comes twice a week.
She helps with cleaning and cooking.
Ana feels safer now.
Mateo started his community service.
He helps younger students.
He likes being a mentor.
The principal says he is very good.
His suspension ended quickly.
I joined a support group.
It's for single mothers like me.
Janet recommended it to me.
We meet every Tuesday night.
We share our problems and solutions.
LESSONS LEARNED
I learned that I can't control everything.
I learned that it's okay to ask for help.
I learned that I have built a good community.
People want to help when you ask them.
I also learned about my children.
Mateo is more mature than I thought.
Camila is very strong for her age.
Ana is proud but needs support.
That terrible day turned into something good.
It brought us closer as a family.
It taught me to trust others.
It taught me that I am not alone.
A NEW CRISIS
One week later I received another emergency call.
It was Mrs. Patterson, another neighbor.
Her cat was stuck in a tall tree.
She couldn't get it down alone.
I looked at my phone and smiled.
I looked at my children.
I told them: "Mrs. Patterson, I know three teenagers.
They need community service hours.
We are going there immediately."
I had learned to delegate responsibilities.
I had learned to build community.
I no longer had to solve everything alone.
I had real help and support.
FINAL REFLECTIONS
My most stressful day taught me a lot.
It taught me about the importance of community.
It taught me about asking for help when you need it.
It taught me that being vulnerable is okay.
Now when I have problems, I call my network.
Janet helps me with medical emergencies.
David helps with Mateo's problems.
Mrs. Chen helps with mom Ana.
I help them too.
Being a single mother is still hard.
But I no longer feel alone.
I have an extended family now.
I have a community that supports me.
I have friends who understand me.
That terrible Tuesday changed our lives.
It made us stronger as a family.
It connected us with our community.
It made me a better mother.
It made me a better person too.
If you are a single mother, remember this.
You don't have to do it all alone.
It is okay to ask others for help.
Build your support network.
Accept help when it is offered.
Offer help when you can too.
Life is easier when we have community.
Life is better when we support each other.
That was the gift of my most stressful day.
