hey out there how's everyone doing tonight
tonight
welcome to another episode of heavy metallurgy
metallurgy
the uh person you hear laughing
hysterically in the background is my
esteemed co-host marty worm marty how we
doing this fine evening oh i'm better now
now i
i
i'm glad to hear it good to hear
marty had a little case of the holiday
blues so i figured i'd festive up the
place a little bit and uh help bring him
out of his funk tonight and uh here to
assist me with that is one of
everybody's favorite youtube
personalities ken from ken's death metal
crypt ken talking about somebody else
how's it going man oh if that was any
better i couldn't stand it
good to hear is everybody had a nice thanksgiving
thanksgiving
sure it was pretty good pretty good
actually as many people that were here
and in-laws nobody got offended nobody left
left
you know in a hurry and yeah and i was
actually pretty chill good deal
everybody survived the black friday uh
lines or did we all just uh
stay inside and order records online
stayed at home we went out we went my
wife and i went out went out and braved
the elements we did and it was actually
it wasn't bad at all really no very cool yeah
yeah
my wife used to do the whole 4 a.m 5 a.m
thing every year but she's kind of
gotten away from it over time but uh
yeah it's everybody out there i hope
you're also having a good holiday with
the extended weekend lots of food lots
of family lots of football lots of stuff
on sale we're not going to talk about
how many records i've ordered in the
past 24 hours because that would just be
kind of sad and
if we reveal numbers which we're not
going to do
but what we are going to do tonight
is talk about some of our favorite
releases from 1984.
uh ken was kind enough to join us for
the stream this evening and so we're
like can pick a year
any year except for y2k since we'd
already covered that one
in a previous episode and ken wasted no
time in single and out 1984 is the year
that he wanted to talk about some of his
favorite records from
ken why did you pick 1984
i just thought there was a stacked year um
um
what a you know looking back just what a
wonderful time i was almost going to
pick 85 to say well let's go in the
middle you know let's start in the
middle of the decade there 85 and then i
just wrote and then i of course i
remembered um you know my favorite band
of all time had
their uh release in 1984 and i think
that's what kind of tilted me towards 1984.
1984.
but then um just
pulling out my list and going pulling
these records out to talk about them
what a wonderful time it was to to to
have been in the medal in 19 it was a
year of exploration
for me
oh growth and exploration yep
wonderful so
yeah i think you know and talking with a
lot of folks you know here and there
over the years 84 is usually decided like
like
one of the two best years for heavy
metal releases that a lot of folks point
to 1986 maybe as being the
kind of highlight for heavy metal
history but 84 gets an awful lot of
votes too as we're going to see tonight
there's just tons of classic albums
top-notch stuff by a lot of bands
and uh yeah there were some trends
things were changing a little bit in
terms of you know where the epicenter of
the heavy metal movement was located on
earth uh and i'm sure we'll see that
pattern emerge as we talk about some of
our records tonight
but yeah anything else shell would like
to say in terms of introduction where
was everybody at in 1984 for some perspective
perspective
just entering high school freshman in
high school
freshman high school marty what about
you i was 13 years old and searching
transitioning from
um well kiss i mean i grew up worshiping kiss
kiss
and um
some of the styles of music as i will show
show
there was one specific record that kind
of opened my opened my eyes to the
heavier side of things but um
yeah i mean i was still listening to i
left a lot of what you could say is
mainstream hard rock
bare metal maybe a little bit um
um
thankfully the heavier stuff saved me
before i fully fell into the hair metal
uh chasm but um
yeah i mean i was a product of going
over to a friend's house that lived in
town that had mtv
and you know he could still see kiss and
d.o and
um videos on mtv and was very influenced
by all that and
yeah just kind of grew from there
but we'll get into that as we get into this
this
we will yeah uh yeah and one thing
that's uh it's a good point to make
through marty 84
things are in metal are starting to
diverge into some categories a little
bit but overall a lot of stuff was still
just kind of lumped in this big
bin of heavy metal you know you had a
thrash scene developing and you
definitely had some bands that were
leaning more commercial friendly a
little more hairspray and stuff but um
everything wasn't divided out into such
you know very distinct camps just yet by
1984. if people were listening to
something like slayer they were probably
also very aware of you know bands like
you know rat or motley crew or lizzie
borden at the same time so yeah
yeah
it's very different from today where
you've got you know a thousand micro
genres and everybody's very narrowly
focused on a few things uh 84 is a lot
of it's still just called heavy metal
and most folks were pretty fine with that
that
yep yeah but there was a tendency and
you mentioned slayer which is a real
good which is a great example of uh
uh
where metal was going to it's in its
extremities you know
um and uh yeah we can talk more about
that as we show
our releases right absolutely all right
was there anything else that folks would
like to
introduce tonight we're not doing a
really long introduction folks because
everybody knows and loves ken uh but ken
if there is anything that you've got
coming up that you'd like to promote any
uh special guests coming over to the
crypt in the near future you're more
than welcome to let folks know about it
no no
tomorrow night you have a show tomorrow
night you have a stream tomorrow night
no i don't yeah thanks bernie yeah i got
uh the fellas from infested
um their california-based band my good
buddy chris johnson company chris runs
is the father of sewer rot records and
uh he is the guitarist vocalist of
infested they just released their first
demo um on sewer rock records just
released and we're gonna have a chat
with those fellas about uh they're all
in different bands like the other guy
the other two members in that band
they're power trio
and uh we're going to have a discussion
with them tomorrow night at uh 8 pm
central time
awesome come check it out
absolutely everybody should be over
there tomorrow to check that out for
sure always really good discussions on
ken streams absolutely thanks
all right well without further ado it
sounds like we're ready to talk 1984 and
i have a feeling folks have a lot of
records they want to talk about so ken
why don't you start us off with something
something
all right well i think right off the bat
i think people would probably expect
that i'm going to show my favorite band
of all time because they released it uh
they did have a release in 1984 but i'm
going to save that or let me oh i was
going to get it ready i was going to
pull it off well i'm going to let you
i'm going to let somebody else because i
want to go a little bit more to what i
was talking about to the extremity
the extremities of metal um and
some bands and releases that maybe were
starting to help like alex said you know
everything was kind of lumped together
but there were some bands that were
taking the realms of heavy metal into a
more extreme place i felt and one of
those bands was
celtic frosts
now what this record did for in my
opinion what this record did for um
um
death metal yeah black metal um
and just going in just taking heavy
metal and metal to a more extreme place
um there you go we all had it um it you know
know
yeah i mean
it most certainly had a huge impact on where
where
extreme metal is today even and i don't
think there's a um
a soul that is in the death metal today
that couldn't
uh give thanks um
to a band like celtic frost and an ep
like morbid tails you know into the
crypt of rays procreating the wicked
dethroned emperor morbid tales yeah
yeah
one of my favorite releases of 1984. now
i'll be honest i didn't again going back
i wasn't exposed to you know like heavy
metal until
um 1983 so about a year before and i did
not buy this in 1984. i probably didn't
buy this until like 85 86 so probably a
year year and a half later after its
release i actually bought it um so you
know a lot of the stuff and then now
there were a couple records i could buy
but keep in mind i was 13 14 years old
so i didn't have the means to go out and
buy every single record that was being released
released
so i didn't get some of these until a
few years later um but you know this one
i didn't probably get like i said till
about a year two year year and a half
later and uh what an impact it had and
the reason was
was um
um
my fir the first heavy metal record i
ever bought was venom's welcome to hell and
and
seeing the picture of venom's welcome to
hell and then when i started buying
music you know metal magazines like
metal forces i i was trying to look for
bands that looked
like venom
and you know
looking at a picture like that
you know
i kind of figured it would be something
screaming something like those
celtic frost morbid tails man you you cannot
cannot
nobody can argue that album you can't
beat it and
for me it was you know i'm along with
you i probably didn't get that album
until 90 or 85 um
um
but when i heard it holy [ __ ] that
opened up new realms of heavy you know i
never heard hellhammer until later
and honestly i prefer celtic frost over
hellhammer i mean hell hammers for for
me is charm there's a lot of charm to hellhammer
hellhammer um
um
but i think they really started to
figure out you know their instruments
and what they were doing a lot more on
that album and like you said it influenced
influenced
oh yeah it's still considered highly
influential you hear tons of celtic
frost and hellhammer and lots of you
know death metal bands still coming out
to this day it's a huge impact on the sound
sound
and you're right marty they you know
they weren't virtuosos by this point but
they had definitely learned their lesson
that they didn't want to be constantly
pigeonholed as this you know band that
was just noisy and couldn't play and so
they were definitely
making big strides in terms of uh
musicianship songwriting
they were they had a plan now they knew
what they wanted to be and they were
rapidly heading that way and they made a
kick-ass album in 1984 as a result of it
for sure they practiced all the time too
which helps i mean you play your
instrument all the time that's all you
do you you
inadvertently get good at it
you know whether you want to or not it's
what happens you get used to can't help
but uh can't help but improve no yeah
but no an awesome album can absolutely well
well
depending on which day you ask me
arguably my favorite celtic frost
release it's definitely the one i play
the most
100 percent my favorite my favorite from
celtic cross 100
100 yeah it's a it's until this day
it's like
classic's not even a word for it you
know i i can't think of a word
to describe it's it's it's more than a classic
classic genre
genre
you know i don't know if you could say
genre defining because i don't know if it
it
did it defined a genre i mean or a
sub-genre i don't know but um
um
more technical than that
oh it's intense at this point
i think all of us could throw that
record on and know every note and scream
and gurgle on that damn thing it's like
not a surprise anymore but it's still
fun to listen to
i will say though i think
i was very impressed with uh monotheist mhm
mhm
typically when i reach for celtic frost
these days it's that album i think that album
album
is the art piece that they always strive
to make
and they did so they walked the line
between avant-garde artistic statement
and celtic frost formula
um there's some songs that are way out
there and strange but even on morbid
tales you've got um uh
uh
dance macabre
that's an instrumental yeah yeah where is
going on and on and on i mean they they
had evan guard elements from the
beginning but it just seems like on
monotheists they had the maturity and
the skill and the production values they
nailed it whereas everybody rants and
raves about in the pandemonium is this big
big
artistic statement man
this might be a hot take but that album
to me is
so overblown i think the band thinks it's
it's
better than it is i mean you start off
with mexican radio you start off the
album with a shitty cover
and there's just some bad songs on that
record anyway that's not 1984. sorry i'm
rambling see i told you i'd do it
that's okay
no and no it's a good point monotheist
is an amazing album and yes it's it it's
a great celtic frost album you know it
just hits all the marks that you want
that band to hit i agree completely yep
yep
okay mr allen
all right well ken started at cameo in
the extreme end of where metal would
head i want to start kind of uh looking
back at where metal had been up to 1984.
and this is one of my uh favorites it's
the fourth and last album from which
fine lords of sin uh
uh
again they made several albums
throughout the new wave of british heavy
metal they were always kind of a b
tier and i've always had a soft spot for
them but i am not going to claim they're
you know one of the highlights of the
new wave of british heavy metal or anything
anything
but they were a band that got
progressively better over time whereas
the later albums are actually much
better than the first couple of albums
which is pretty rare in heavy metal
circles you know we all tend to prefer
the demo over everything else but this
is a band where you want the later stuff
they got very good at
making solid albums by the end
um so yeah personal favorite really good
track list on it
it's also though one reason i'm starting
with this is it's going to be probably
the only
new wave of british heavy metal album i
mentioned tonight
which by 1984
the new wave of british heavy metal
wasn't technically over but
a lot of people felt like it had run its
course and that you know the british
bands were
past their prime some of them were
becoming more mainstream some of them
were already breaking up and fading away
the british music scene was kind of
moving in other directions already and
and
as such a lot of the big things that
came out in 1984 are not from british
metal bands there's you know a couple of
obvious exceptions we'll talk about
but it was coming down to like you know
the two or three behemoths were you know
at the forefront but all these other bands
bands
they were
yeah they were kind of fading out of the
scene more and more the the epicenter of
heavy metal was not going to be the uk
at this point it was quickly shifting
over to the united states and i think
we'll see that with a lot of the titles
we pick tonight at least i know in my
stack it's a ton of u.s metal and you
know a few foreign releases too but yeah
only i think this one british one made
the stack tonight so uh you know the new
way for british heavy metal had done its
thing it had a huge impact and influence
but by this point you know us bands had
sprung up they had learned those lessons
they bought all those imports from
britain and now that torch was getting
passed and so
it was time for another country to
really start defining heavy metal and
what it was going to be like as we moved
into the mid 1980s so yeah i wanted to
start with this one because it is a good
album it's definitely worth a shout out
in 1984
but uh
it's you know
it doesn't have a lot of peers on the
british medal scene in that particular year
year
i love the serious discussion with that
[ __ ] hat
oh what this thing
did i mention it sings and dances
you did not
must have slipped my
mind cd cult makes a good point here um
it amazes me that in 84 something like
celtic frost happened metal was still in
its infancy basically in 84 and for
extreme stuff to already be hitting
showed how fast metal was moving and
that is a good point because [ __ ] was changing
changing
there was like a lot of things going on
in 84 that was happening really fast
metal was getting faster was another
part you know it's
it was kind of evolving out of the you
know the quick pokebeat into something a
little more neck breaking i guess you
could say
is moving into darker territory
sonically um
and in um
lyrically there's a lot of you know
venom so proudly started off in the the
satanic panic era and
and
a lot of bands followed suit after them
you know
yep well i mean it was a big thing with
you know that early metal scene was
always trying to be the everybody wanted
to be the most extreme band and so yeah
that envelope had to get pushed very
rapidly because
venom yeah as you said had already set
you know a very high bar
so bands like hellhammer had to try to
one-up venom and then some of these
other bands that i'm sure we're going to
touch on they had to start one-upping
hellhammer and it was a very rapid
progression it was always yes who can be
the fastest who can be the you know
most evil sounding and
that may sound a little weird to people
today because
uh yeah we're well past that point of
anybody trying to claim they're the
loudest or the heaviest or whatever but
at the time i mean it really was an arms
race uh to see yeah which what was going
to be just you know the fastest band in
the world was
an ambition that you know these kids
were setting out to really be able to
try to plant their flag and say
nobody's faster than us or nobody you
know drums as quick as we do
nobody's as evil looking as we are yeah
it was a real thing so
metal did have to rapidly evolve it went
down that path pretty fast
you're absolutely right
all right for sure
well for me i could talk about where it
was where it's going but i figured in
1984 i'm 13 years old i'm going to talk
about where i was at with metal at that
point and i was still clinging on to my
youth of kiss
and um this album came out amalize it's
got mark st john on guitar
finds kiss
being a little more aggressive you know
they did their failed um experimental album
album
they dropped the makeup you know had
done an album to this previous where
they dropped their makeup
so this was you know kiss trying to find
their way looking tough even though
they're still hanging on to
you know the poofed up hair and um revlon
revlon
uh makeup products but um
this is a decent album i mean i i really
tried to sell this album a lot to
friends when i got it because i liked it
a lot i thought it was really heavy it
was fast kevin's on fire heaven's on
fire is on here burn [ __ ] burn is a
good aggressive gene song
um lonely's a hunter is a good song hide
enough into the fires real aggressive
intros start off the um
um
it's a good album
but the writing was on the wall what was
coming and this album i played a lot
when i got it but it it didn't
eventually it didn't as 1984 progressed
didn't really stick
later i agree though that was a good
record one yeah i kind of agree you know
i agree with you that it when it first
hit me when i first listened to it
because i saw them was it the following
year on that tour
or maybe it was like a couple years
later because they were still because at
that show they played heaven's on fire
yeah what was the hitting i think it
might have been their single the stage
lit up like a like that christmas tree
behind allen i mean it just
the whole place was i mean i'm surprised
the place didn't catch on fire there was
so much pyrotechnics going on stage when
they played that song i mean that whole
stage lit up on fire
it was the coolest thing though just
listening you know listening to go into
that song heaven's on fire this stage
just blows up into a ball of fire it was
i did like that i like that i have that
on vinyl too i did like that
hey 61 people watching thanks for
hanging out with us tonight we really
appreciate everybody thank you so much
uh ken
you're back
yes sir yes sir all right well um
keeping in the extreme of 1984 a record
that absolutely scared the
jesus out of me um i didn't even know
what it was i didn't play it for
probably another uh
uh
week after getting it because i didn't
understand it and i i thought it was
really scary
um and it scared me until this day it
scares me and uh we're going to talk
about genre defining records yeah
yeah
the first battery um you know
with with uh
how did you describe this in 1984 again
another record i didn't get in 1984
again probably there till 85 86 um but
even then as a 15 16 year old and had
been exposed at that point to many metal
records metal albums metal mini metal
releases um how do you describe this in 1984
1984
you know how do you
what do you do with this where do you
put it
um obviously typically in
in
well i mean thrash was going but not
really going yet i guess so
but where do you put it i don't think i
could think it would be you you set it
next to venom and
that's the only peer yeah that would
jump to mind well later we would call
this later on obviously marty no well
i'm sure you know too but we uh you know
later on we call this the first wave of
black metal sure um you know
that's but we didn't call that we didn't
call this black metal it's time
i don't think anybody
honestly well that's another stream for
you guys maybe uh
what when did we call first wave first
wave was it i called like across morbid
tails i always called that a trash
record i don't know better
you know what i mean though like that
that's another stream for you guys when
did we call the first wave of black
metal black metal uh you know what was
it uh after the the second wave of black metal
metal
um anyways probably yeah just uh
in today you know playing this record
just still you get that same eerie
feeling of of what
what
satanic metal you did
corazon's vocals just at the time you
thought that he was like you know in
agony screaming him and just the whole
thing you know the the goat here and
just yeah the whole nine yards the
pentagram on the back the whole you know
satanic image um another record that you
know goes with like you said murray
morbid tales that's just
you know classic isn't even a word for
it you know it's timeless
it's ageless venomous venomous you know it's
it's
um yeah just bathory
okay i heard um i think my first battery
i heard was the return a friend had it
and i didn't like it
i didn't like it i think i said this
dude it sucks it's it's shitty
then um
much later in the years i ended up
buying hammer heart
on tape at a in a use a store used i
loved it and then i started backtracking
it eventually so i was late coming to
that stuff but you know i called that
[ __ ] thrash i called possessed thrash i
mean everything i didn't really
understand i lumped into thrash
this is kind of how i said it you know
this is evil thrash you know it's like
black metal even though venom coined the term
term
they didn't really that the genre
defying statement didn't really stick
with me i mean when i thought of black
metal i thought of venom i thought of
the second venom album you know it was
the title of an album not a style of
music really right this is weird
that's like that's what i was meaning
like what when did first wave become the
first wave i think it was
when we decided there was a second wave
with emperor and
it was those bands that made us look
back and where did this come from oh
it's this it's clear yeah
now that we've seen the where it ended
up we can see the path now we can track
it back but
at the time [ __ ] i didn't know what the
hell it was i didn't either i didn't
like i said it scared me and then i
didn't put it on for like a week or two
yeah and it was a real outlier i mean in
its scene too it's i mean there were no
peers in that you know in sweden that
we're doing anything on that level at
all it's not like you know sweden of
course became a big thing for extreme
metal but that was much much later all
the other swedish bands at the time were
much more
in the new wave of british heavy metal
mold and then you had bathroom doing
that it was yeah just a complete anomaly
i guarantee if kwarathon went to shows
dressed like he was on those pictures
that we saw in the metal magazines he
scared that piss out of people at those
shows in sweden oh yeah i get nobody
talk to corathon i guarantee it yeah
plus he was like a giant he was like yeah
yeah yeah
yeah
yeah he's scared of not one person talk
all right alan
all right
so yeah
i got my new wave of british heavy metal
fix out of the way for the night
and then to kind of highlight where
metal was going i definitely wanted to
show this one metal massacre five so
this was the installment that came out
in 84 on metal blade
and you know this of course you know
seminal compilation series uh that
really helped establish a ton of great
bands give them their first exposure
stands out from the
volumes that came before it for the
sheer number of bands that went on to
big things you know when you look at the first
first
three four volumes each one has you a
couple of bands that you established a
long career
and a couple of bands that maybe did an
ep and a couple of bands nobody ever
heard of again but the lineup on this
one uh is just insane you've got omen
you've got voivod you've got overkill
fates warning
metal church uh
uh
and hellhammer um and mace
and a few others that did multiple
albums uh you know like attacker that
still did well too
it's just an incredibly loaded
compilation and again i think this
harkens back to where america was
becoming you know the forefront of the
heavy metal scene and a lot of these
american bands
were now
uh solid enough you know they you know
had the chops they had the talent they
were becoming the new face of heavy
metal moving forward that you know this
isn't a compilation where
one band got the big break and all the
others kind of got left in the dust this
is like all these guys got signed or
almost all of them uh almost all these
bands had an m stuff
stuff
so yeah it's an interesting volume for
that in terms of just sheer
star power it's far and away the most
stacked of the metal massacre series and
i think it's yeah just a good indication
of how
heavy metal was really coming to its own
in the united states in 1984. you know
before this she had things had built up
yet some really important things come
out in 1983 but in 1984 the doors were
getting kicked wide open and these bands
were really going to establish
themselves long-term moving forward so
really important compilation that showed
off a lot of these bands taking that
first step
well done alan well done thank you
to show that with all those representations
representations
um yeah good cool hey by the way can i
comment or no i can't comment on that
you have to you have to it's so dumb you
have to open i can comment but you have
to open up a side uh youtube
if you have to youtube and open in
another tab yeah open it in another tab
yeah just hop over and check the
comments from time to time but was there
one you saw that you wanted to comment
oh no i just in general i i was i'm like
i can't comment no just in general i was
just seeing the comments rolling by and
i was like oh maybe i'll comment but i
i don't know why stream yard doesn't
allow that function you think it would
be everybody in the chat should be into
the stream should be able to comment on
the chat but anyway
um good good call on that metal massacre
stuff for me though the metal blade
comps that really resonated with me and
my younger days were the best of metal
blade the best the best of metal blade
comps those are good too yep volume one
was a revolution for me i mean i heard
so many great bands from that that's the
first time i heard slayer that was the
first time i heard omen um
um
lizzie borden a lot of that [ __ ] it's
like holy crap there's another one of
those i had to go buy everything that
was on that damn comp
yep yeah i did the same with uh i forget
which one i got first it was volume 2 or
volume 3 from best of metal blade but
yeah i just started working my way down
the track list go to the record store
once every few weeks and
buy another cd buy another band
whichever one they had in
well i guess it's my turn to jump in and
yes it is everybody's talking about cool
heavy stuff and i'm still stuck in this
crap but i'm gonna pull out that's quite okay
okay
here's two that came out in 84.
to this day i still love the hell out of
rat i don't give a [ __ ] anybody says
this is good hard rock they were one of
those bands that
yeah they were kind of trying to look a
little hair metal-ish but their music
had a bit more of a
street edge to it
a little more hard rock influence rock
and roll yep you've got warren d martini
who's a shred [ __ ] guitar player
um great songs they wrote great songs
stephen piercy had a very unique
vocal style
um this album the one after invasion
your privacy which is my favorite and
dancing undercover those three albums is
a great run of records
if you want to try to dip your tone to that
that
definitely check that out this album
dawkin for me
i've never liked don dawkins voice he
has i'm sorry a wimpy tone to his voice
i liked some of this i like this album
this is probably the of the early [ __ ]
the most aggressive um
um uh
uh
kind of listen this was so [ __ ] long
it's got some power metal overtones on
it too it does it really does uh tooth
and nail you know the title track's a
great song really aggressive
i don't know this is you know this was
the the end was coming for this style
for me for a very very very long time
it's only now that i'm starting i mean i
just picked this up
for eight dollars at the record shop
downtown you know two months ago i'm
starting to like revisit you know
because i'm getting older
i'm getting old and um nostalgia is
starting to kind of creep into my uh
listening habits which is fine um but
yeah the next the next my next round i'm
gonna end on the last two more
mainstream things before we start
getting into the before i start getting
the more heavy stuff but yeah i mean
that style that style of music was where
i was at
the transition was coming
yeah no it makes sense i mean it makes
sense and that's a great another great
point yeah to bring up about a band like
rat who was they had huge rock and roll
influence yeah and their music for sure
you know even the first especially the
first album oh yeah and then you know
going in like like you said even you
know like you said invasion of privacy
started getting a little more tad bit
more amazing although i i like that
record i have that i like the way it's
produced it's got a very good atmosphere
to it and the song that's a good record
[ __ ] catchy catchy
and again rat played right alongside all
those other early la bands on the metal
blade roster yeah they were very much
part of that scene
it wasn't split up yet you know they and
motley crew played right alongside
armored saint and [ __ ] they didn't last
as long as they did because they were
bad exactly
and they had some hits i mean round and
round obviously today it was on a
commercial was it a geico commercial or
something i don't remember but
you know oh yeah
and it actually it
inspired their like uh rankings on
spotify went through the roof you know
eric bauer says round and round blows though
but okay
ken you're back i'm back all right all
right so staying within the extremity of
metal of course because that's what we
do here in the crypt um
i'm trying to remember if this was the first
this might have been the first thing i
heard from them
uh and then from a friend and then i
actually this is a record i did buy at
i mean again there you go yeah i figured
marty david too um again just you know
another one of those records uh you know
like like morbid tales and battery i
mean it you know um thrash
thrash
more thrashy for sure thrash but getting
an aggressive thrash you know much more
aggression in their edge of thrash and
uh just you know
song titles even you know
bass lines drumming
drumming
um starting to you know they're
they're hitting home with so much
extremity and so much
evil sounding
riffing and just starting you know again
like allen pointed out
the us starting to
starting to pull away
from uh what what was being categorized
as metal at the time with something like
this but on in the chapel man this um
yeah again another
classic's not the word the classic isn't
the right word for these kinds of releases
again timeless priceless ageless um
[ __ ] slayer man
against my hair this cd this ep though
is really a band
their first album show no mercy is my
favorite slayer album it was very new
wave of british heavy metal influence
the riffs
the the speed of the songs
it was very much a product of that
influence this starts showing them
kind of casting that aside a little bit
and really is there a better song than
chemical warfare
that's my favorite on their [ __ ] just a
a
[ __ ] raging song
from any band i mean it was slayer that
did it though and
this set the tone for hello eights it
set the tone for what was to come for a
little while i mean
what the hell's the one divine
intervention was the last one i got and
went okay this is pretty okay
but after that i could care less about
slayer to be completely honest but um
agreed this [ __ ]
is so [ __ ] iconic this is
metal head dna if this isn't in your dna
there's something wrong of course this
comes from a guy that just showed a
[ __ ] docking record so you know
sue me but
i got talking records too man
but you're not showing them i'm the one
that brought the dream
dream warriors man grant i'm not the one
wearing the turkey hat but i brought the
docking record
all right allan's up turkey head
all right uh well i'll make you feel a
little better here marty i'll stray a
little bit more towards that arena rock
side too
monster album that came out in 84 from a
long running band that had reinvented
themselves really successfully in the
these days you know it's of course you
know very
you know it's the cool hipster thing to
do to only focus on their 70s material
which is no fantastic stuff
um i love the span's 80s output most of
it is extremely good you know a lot of
those 70s metal slash hard rock bands
they didn't survive the transition into
the 1980s very well at all most of them
petered out at the end of the 70s or
really just turned into you know a very
commercial leaning fm radio kind of product
product
and you know scorpions you know there's
still great guitar work all over these
you know these are still you know
classic songs that you can uh you know
you love yes they have gotten you know
run into the ground a bit on radio and
commercials none of us really need to
hear rocky like a hurricane again that
doesn't mean it's a bad song it's just
that we've heard it too much but uh no
scorpions during this time they were
still putting out you know kick-ass albums
albums
and that should not be forgotten just
because they don't have the same you
know heavy
you know air about them of a you know a
slayer or you know those kind of bands
yeah this was still you know absolute
you know front and center huge metal
release from 1984 great album love it
still play it quite regularly i probably
play blackout more than this one but uh
again i also you know love drive is
really good
you know animal magnetism is really good
everything they've done you know through
this point you know they were still
hitting home runs with pretty much every album
album
anybody else noticed the michael jackson
beat it guitar line on that um
it's it drives me nuts it drives me i
i be can't um
be can't um
mind till i come back to love you that
one i think
yeah is it coming home coming i'd say
coming home yeah i think it is it's it's
basically almost no for no beat it by
michael jackson it's the same speed the
same key the same notes
it's like real [ __ ] close i heard it
i'm like what the hell is this
i used to come home from school and then
put this on the turntable
and then play
pretend i was playing air guitar and
playing the song the solo and still
loving you
for like five weeks straight i did that
like i'd come home put this record on
just put on still loving you and pretend
to play the guitar solo you don't care i
was too busy looking at the side boob to
be playing in here right
busy looking at that
i'm glad you mentioned that marty cause
this was actually still considered a
pretty racy cover in 1984 when this went
into some of the other stores you know
they had to do an alternate cover to get
it in places you know the bigger changes
that's the inside of the record yep but
for the uh yeah if you bought this was a
cassette i bought at walmart and yeah so
like the you know the walmarts of the
world and such this was on the front cover
cover
that you couldn't have side boob in
wally world that was too much uh back in
the day
that yeah the women that are walking
around walmart are wearing like this
tank top and you can see all sorts of
side cleavage i didn't say there wasn't hypocrisy
to chromium dioxide i was going to but
someone already showed it ah yeah i yeah
i'm actually that'll be the first
response video i ever do i'll be
recording that tomorrow oh [ __ ] awesome cool
cool
all right
all right marty i'm up all right i'm
gonna not feed you at the same time hope
i'm not stepping on anybody's toes here but
but um
um
first we're going to go with a legacy a
legacy guy and it's ronnie james dio the
last in line i got that too this is an
84 classic
um i think holy diver was my first
experience with dio i was very excited
for this album it's got we rock
last in line was the big hit the videos um
um uh
uh
mystery of course was a single for this
album as well and of course the epic
ending egypt the chains are wrong um
um
it was dio i came upon dio first before
i discovered his black sabbath era and
when i discovered the black sabbath era
and then later the rainbow era cemented
cemented
his legacy in my mind as him being one
of the greatest rock
rock
singers ever
um the rainbow rising is one of my
all-time favorite albums um
um
uh sabbath mob rules
one of my all-time favorite albums
and um to la the last of the more
mainstream stuff you can't go without
talking about
this this guy right here um
this is a sleazy classic
um on the la strip these guys there is
no denying the character
and um
in blackie lawless's vocals even to this day
day
whether he'd be putting out stuff i care
that much about he's got a great voice
a lot of dirt in there yet a lot of
emotion in his singing
um this [ __ ] was really really excellent
for me i want to be somebody of course um
um
this whole album is full of bangers one
after the other there really isn't um
um
on your knees holy [ __ ] what a great song
song
tons and tons of good stuff and this
machine yep love machine it was uh [ __ ]
like a beast animals on here right
i think it was a single single yeah no i
was a single yeah yeah it's not only
from school days tournament tormentor
torture never stops that's on here too
right that's such a good [ __ ] heavy
metal record it's a great heavy metal
record and
um they got a lot more commercial after
this uh the last command i still like
that record but they started to drop
a little bit more with the influence
that was going on around them on the
sunset strip
but it wasn't much longer after all that
that i was turned around we'll talk
about that soon
soon
is next
oh before before before we jump to
canada i'm in uh
uh
on the the little just trivia note for
folks out there some of our uh viewers
like the little trivia facts are in
there there's a weird connection with
the with dios last in line which was an
excellent pick
and this album are either of y'all
familiar with this by a band called
lester maddox [Music]
[Music] no
no
album's called gothic lore uh
uh
there is a track it's a very small band
they did two albums
not bad stuff
but uh side two starts off with a track
called egypt the chains are off
as opposed to egypt the chains are on
it's not a cover
uh but yeah an obvious nod to the the
dio song on this weird one it always
stuck with me because it's not a bad
little album and back in the uh metal
maniacs forum days there was somebody that
that
remembered this song title but they
couldn't remember the name of the band
and it took us a while
for the group to dig around and figure
out what the hell was talking about
everyone kept someone's like dude you're
talking about the deal song he's like i
am not talking about the damn dio song i
know the dio song he's like this was a
different band
that did a song called the chainsaw off
and i can't remember their name
and eventually the group you know high
of mine worked it out and figured oh
it's this thing so yeah weird little
connection to the do album there
uh alan rock and metal plus is asking if
you drew that cover um
um
no no if if i had drawn it it wouldn't
look nearly this good
i was gonna say it looks awfully good
good
yes yeah it's not a bad little album uh
it was hey i i've still got it to this
day so it can't be that bad they made a
second album that's also okay but that
one's a lot harder to find for reasons
reasons
no i've never heard that man no either
they're decent they they're not going to
reinvent the genre they're not going to
make anyone's top 10 list but it's a fun listen
listen
all right all right my turn you got it
all right it's all you can
keeping in the extreme surprise
surprise
um just another
again i don't know at the time i know i
know how we categorize it today but at
the time
uh you in 1984 and you were to listen to
this album
again like marty pointed out it's
probably thrash
that's problem but
today i don't know if people would say
this was just thrash but
in the sign of evil
by sodom um you know who's
who's not what kid getting into metal is
not going to want to listen to that
record right
i mean
what what person what
what
guy or gal getting into metal like a 13
14 year old kenneth cabito isn't gonna
want to check that guy out
and what he has to say right i mean yeah
but again just one of these you know
blasphemer outbreak of evil um great song
song
you know about the time you could you
know you like marty said you lump this
into thrash because you didn't
understand what it was and that was the
only label you could give it that was
quite a scratch that was thrashed to me
but you know right at the time but today
would would i say this is a pure thrash
no
today probably not but back then
absolutely you know it's got some first
wave black metal going on in it too it's
like a weird mix of stuff yeah blackened
thrash a lot of black thrash bands take
influence from this today a lot of black
thresh uh bands you know cite this as being
being
hugely influential so uh yeah sodom in
the sign of evil um you know in in
going going out and you know uh
uh
stepping out of the u.s realm um you know
know
uh especially for me like you know marty
showed d.o and then you know we showed
slayer and then you know go and go into
the realms of germany and finding sodom
and tommy angel ripper angel ripper was
his name on this was you didn't even
know the guy's name was tom you just
knew it was angel ripper yep so well his
first thing was angel's last name was
ripper right angel ripper man
there was no tom back then he didn't go
by tom tomas
tomas
he went by angel river
river
outbreak of evil
what a [ __ ] sign alan
alan
all right ah well uh let's stay in
germany for a minute because that's
worth pointing out that uh you know
germany had had you know some early
success with uh in heavy metal with
except and scorpions
uh but then you know the new wave of
british heavy metal became all the focus
for a while and
germany of course would it will
re-establish themselves as a leading
force in heavy metal but you know
took a few years for a lot of you know
really strong follow-ups you know an 84
for example you know noise records was
just getting up and running and this was
one of their releases uh this is their
death metal compilation with the
original cover which got them in a lot
of trouble in a lot of markets this had
to be reissued with a censored cover to
and you know it's a funny
name and it's a good example of why you
shouldn't you got to be careful with how
you name things because yeah yeah the
compilation is death metal
but the bands featured on it are not
what we would consider death metal by
modern standards uh you know lineup is
running wild one of their first vinyl
appearances i think it's their second technically
technically
uh you've got halloween making an early
vinyl appearance you've got a band
called dark avenger who
uh 15 minutes after this were released
were apparently all run over by a
high-speed german rail train and never
heard from again
and uh then you also had hellhammer this
was one of the few places hellhammer got
a little bit of a vinyl release before
you know the ep and then quickly
changing over to celtic frost
but yeah so
if you just thought you know oh this is
you know called death metal it must be
you know sodom creator destruction no
hellhammer is the only one of the bands
that even would come close to that by
today's definitions of the terms you
know wild and halloween very much you
know german traditional power speed
metal stuff and dark avengers much
closer to that style
than to anything in the hellhammer camp
hellhammer's the real anomaly on this compilation
compilation
and so yeah you know
things were happening in germany bands
were getting you up and running but we
were still in sort of you know the you
know the first ep stages um you know the
first album stages you were still a year
away from halloween's ep uh
uh
you have the first running wild comes
out in 84 the first gravedigger comes
out in 84 so those bands are just kind
of getting their first release starting up
up
kind of like you know in the us scene a
bit but uh you know a lot of attention
it seems was on the u.s scene at first
and you know the german bands would
quickly you know catch up and start
matching them stride for stride but yeah
just another cool
note on where a particular scene was at
as 1984 was happening that album has
always evaded me and now every time it
turns up it's so much money i don't want
to throw down for because i've heard
most of the stuff on it you know but
it's like yeah
yeah the tracks are available elsewhere yeah
yeah
yeah it's it's a cool historical relic
from the early days of noise in the
early days of the german scene starting
to you know really roar to life again
yep for sure
all right marty
take it away
all right my friend scott bought this
tape played it for me and i said my god
that is the most garbage [ __ ] i've ever heard
heard
[Laughter]
granted i just was showing you docking
and rat albums so
when i heard fight fire with fire i'm like
like
this is insane it's so fast it's garbage
this is how can they even do that
it was maybe a week later
that this album clicked and it clicked
hard and it made me want to
i was ripping my kiss posters down off
my wall i was
giving my
uh rat tapes away to friends i was um the
the
it all shifted with this album for me
big time and the one i'm gonna show
after this was another humongous shift
for me but um
this album i think was the gateway drug
to the heavier stuff for a lot of people
during this time
there's no denying it's a classic i
think this is probably my favorite of
the first three
maybe because i heard it first i think i
think wherever people jump on to a band
is kind of where they resonate the most
with it but i don't know i mean i i love
what came before it i love the album
that came after it
but um this to me was
non-stop spinning just
just
absorbing every note and scream and drum
fill and baseline on this thing
and like you know ken mentioned back in
the day
i'm 13 years old i'm not making money to
go to the store and buy
five six albums a trip but
i'd save up my allowance for a month i'd
go maybe buy two tapes that'd be it for
the month
and you know between myself and my
friend scott who was the one that was
really the spearhead of getting me into
a lot of this [ __ ] he had his finger on
the pulse what was going on i was just a
follower at that point but um
between the two of us is where i heard a
lot of this stuff and i would just have
to you know save my money stop eating
lunch at school and saving all that
lunch money to you know get a ride to the
the
music store good old camelot music and
drop every penny i had on whatever tape
was out but
wow what a breakthrough album for me
this is the one that really opened my
mind to
the heavier side of what metal would
become and there was no stopping it from
here like we said it was on a [ __ ]
a flaming railroad train going downhill
is where metal was going it was just speed
speed aggression
aggression evil
evil
it was all coming to a head and i think
metallica was the um
they were right at the tip where they're
at the tip of the spear for sure
so this was a humongous album for me
when it comes to um and that's another
reason why i've always kind of given
metallica a pass
as their last few albums been great
no but i always give them a chance you
know i like that i like the riffs on
dead death magnetic
i i liked about half of their last album
but do they have staying power no is it
going to take me away from spinning that
no it's not but you know my heart has
always got an open open door policy for
a new metallica album hoping that
someday it's going to happen but let's
face it they've made more money
than they'll ever make doing the things
they've done
and they are
now seen as a classic rock band it's
that's the way it is
it's really strange for me to sit here
and say that because it just really it
just makes me realize further that i'm
an old [ __ ]
but um you know
it's the way things go they're not
really seen as heavy anymore which is even
even
more bizarre because at the time i heard
that element blew the [ __ ] doors off
my brain you know
but here we are progress
yeah i think it's
very real similar for me too marty was
that i was actually exposed to metallica
probably around 83-84
um but i was exposed to the first album
kill them all it didn't resonate with me
kill them all didn't quite resonate with
me again just getting into it maybe just
you know wasn't clicking in a 13 year
old brain just yet
um and then uh probably around
probably around 80 45 i was you know
right lightning so
so
i was introduced to that and that
resonated with me a lot more than than
to kill them all
but then you know then we get into
master of puppets and for me master of puppets
puppets
is and will always be metallica's epic
it's amazing it's amazing
i you know i know that's a very
unpopular opinion everybody says
absolutely not you know ride the lightning
lightning
but for me master of puppets
don't they never
never
they've never duplicated that record again
again
not before or after yeah um
master of publix master publix
put them on the world stage everybody in
the world knew who metallica was after
master apocalypse opening for ozzy
helped that yeah oh yeah put them in
front of a lot of people ozzie knew it
you know
ozzy knows music ozzy can't spell his
name anymore that you know his life but
look you know god love him you know i
love ozzy but um you know
he just you know he he
at times it doesn't seem like he can tie
his own shoe
and then but then you ask him about
music from 1979
when he was in sabbath or something and
the guy spitting out all these dates
times and set lists yeah you know
because you know where words fail music
speaks yeah and you know
right it speaks to them and i think a
lot of the a lot of the the aussie thing is
is
there's john osborne and there's ozzy osbourne
osbourne
there's two different people and i think
i think ozzy
granted there's no reason why he should
still be alive these days after all the
[ __ ] he's done but i think a lot of it
the aussie side is an act
i i think there's a lot more going on in
ozzie's head than uh he's 11 over the
years but that could be just me
you know thinking
i just felt like you said it was because
of all the drug
use and
alcohol and yeah
we'll never really know i mean it very
much could be yeah that you know just
all the the substance abuse over the
years has put him in that state i i kind
of agree with marty he's always come
across as very savvy in knowing how to
play that character to maximum effect
when he needs to um
which is i mean he's created an empire
for himself a legacy that's going to
live on long after he does so um but
yeah he's always
he's always known how to you know really
really
read the music world and uh
make good decisions in that sense
but uh but yeah metallica
it's it is funny how much you know
perceptions have changed on them over
time marty cannot
cannot
overstate enough how important those
first three to four metallica albums were
were
not just you know to individual fans not
just to metallica to the entire
development of heavy metal music
the everything looks different if metallica
metallica
had never existed and ride the lightning
was a huge statement i agree with you
ken i think puppets is the opus
but ride the lightning really showed
what a band could do if they started to
really put their nose to the grindstone
and take it very seriously
kill them all you know had made an
impact for sure but
but
uh you know it was you know still very
derivative of what had come before it
was a faster version of a lot of new
wave of british heavy metal it's a good
album i like i've always liked to kill
them oh yeah but
you know if say the band had just fell
apart and disappeared at that point
would that album be remembered as
anything really special earlier than
other than an early example of a us
metal band maybe not
the you know strides they made by the
time this came out in terms of
tightening up their sound writing you know
know
songs you know a little more complexity more
more
black fade to black i mean that is a
very mature out song yeah yeah
and that's there's the word i'm looking
for that yeah they're maturing rapidly
here they still have you know the angry
youthful thrashy thing
nailed to a t
but at the same they're not just
wallowing that they're not just making
kill them all a part two they are
rapidly maturing on this album and it's
really shows through um
while puppets is the opus this is
probably the one i reach for the most if
i want to hear metallica i'll usually
reach for lightning
beyond this one
uh it was the
i'm pretty sure this was the second
metallica album i heard after uh the
first one i heard was and justice for
all which never really clicked for me
but this one
uh yeah this one was always a favorite i
had the
the ride the lightning shirt and i lived
in that shirt in high school um
several days a week it's just that same
shirt people recognized me by that shirt
at times
yeah you really cannot
understate how important this band and you know including this album was to the
you know including this album was to the development of heavy metal in the united
development of heavy metal in the united states this was the band everybody was
states this was the band everybody was already trying to copy and emulate and
already trying to copy and emulate and one up even in 1984 and it just
one up even in 1984 and it just continued after that uh this band pushed
continued after that uh this band pushed other bands to be great this band pushed
other bands to be great this band pushed you know dave mustain and mega death to
you know dave mustain and mega death to be great they pushed exodus to be great
be great they pushed exodus to be great they pushed
they pushed everybody to go up to this standard if
everybody to go up to this standard if they could i think the state even has
they could i think the state even has one writing credit on that album i think
one writing credit on that album i think the last of his riffs was used on one of
the last of his riffs was used on one of those songs
those songs maybe something funny rick says right to

um this one takes the cake for me i mean you know i i think it's just because
you know i i think it's just because that um i wasn't exposed to maiden
that um i wasn't exposed to maiden earlier though i was exposed to made
earlier though i was exposed to made with diana uh didn't quite resonate with
with diana uh didn't quite resonate with me but when bruce bruce
me but when bruce bruce was singing on this
was singing on this i heard bruce bruce
i heard bruce bruce and um
yeah bruce bruce resonated with me and uh you
bruce bruce resonated with me and uh you know probably my one of my

and um you know bruce saying it right and and you know um
and and you know um this is the the epitome but you know
this is the the epitome but you know although these guys were
although these guys were from the uk in in
from the uk in in breaking i'm thinking breaking out of
breaking i'm thinking breaking out of that new wave of british heavy metal
that new wave of british heavy metal style with more of a heavy metal go
style with more of a heavy metal go maybe they sensed like alan said how us
maybe they sensed like alan said how us bands were were breaking the the mold of
bands were were breaking the the mold of new wave of british heavy metal bringing
new wave of british heavy metal bringing the us to the forefront of the metal
the us to the forefront of the metal scene i think made may have taken a a
scene i think made may have taken a a couple of paragraphs out of that page
couple of paragraphs out of that page and said you know what we want to change
and said you know what we want to change it up a little here we're going to
it up a little here we're going to create something called power slave
create something called power slave and uh yeah
and uh yeah the epitome of what a heavy metal record
the epitome of what a heavy metal record should be his power slave
should be his power slave and uh noah sander butts

and my favorite maiden is killers
my favorite maiden is killers because that's where i started with
because that's where i started with maiden sure but did deanno have the
maiden sure but did deanno have the vocal prowess and the endurance to go on
vocal prowess and the endurance to go on to do what bruce did
to do what bruce did hell no i think i think diana was
hell no i think i think diana was probably more in league with a blaze
probably more in league with a blaze bailey type of singer they picked blaise
bailey type of singer they picked blaise bailey because he's a friend
bailey because he's a friend and he could not do two and a half hours
and he could not do two and a half hours it killed it wrecked his voice he's a
it killed it wrecked his voice he's a good singer but he is not an iron maiden
good singer but he is not an iron maiden singer bruce dickinson
singer bruce dickinson was the model for what iron maiden
was the model for what iron maiden became and um
became and um you know like remember the beast that
you know like remember the beast that was their big breakthrough album

image for the thumbnail for tonight's video as i wanted uh couldn't think of a
video as i wanted uh couldn't think of a better one to fit having ken on to
better one to fit having ken on to discuss this year with that album in the
discuss this year with that album in the mix and i i do want to like throw back
mix and i i do want to like throw back into this i i talked about in my own
into this i i talked about in my own vaden review of sinjitsu
vaden review of sinjitsu what does this album have that sinjitsu
what does this album have that sinjitsu does not have it's got martin birch
produced by martin birch he would go in and make this band
and make this band he would make bruce sing a million times
he would make bruce sing a million times until he got the take he wanted
until he got the take he wanted kevin shirley is a very much a yes man
kevin shirley is a very much a yes man which i think at this point in maiden's
which i think at this point in maiden's career they want that
career they want that they want someone to come and say oh
they want someone to come and say oh we're mate we're gonna play live and
we're mate we're gonna play live and do whatever we're gonna use every riff
do whatever we're gonna use every riff and we're just gonna mumble through this
and we're just gonna mumble through this okay great iron maiden i'll record it
okay great iron maiden i'll record it and it's just
and it's just i listen to maiden records now the new

senjitsu was 85 minutes of the same [ __ ] song over and over and over it's
[ __ ] song over and over and over it's boring
boring and it's just
and it's just there isn't a producer there pushing
there isn't a producer there pushing them like
them like no that riff is a riff you played on the
no that riff is a riff you played on the last album that harmony is the same
last album that harmony is the same harmony you used two song two albums ago
harmony you used two song two albums ago that that
that that they don't have someone pushing them and
they don't have someone pushing them and they i granted they're old guys they
they i granted they're old guys they don't want to be pushed anymore they
don't want to be pushed anymore they proved their point
proved their point right and people like the new sen jitsu
right and people like the new sen jitsu i feel bad for saying anything bad about
i feel bad for saying anything bad about it it's just it's boring it's so boring
it it's just it's boring it's so boring and it bums me out i'm glad they're
and it bums me out i'm glad they're still doing it but it's just not it's
still doing it but it's just not it's not power slave it's not somewhere in
not power slave it's not somewhere in time which is another great [ __ ]
time which is another great [ __ ] album holy [ __ ] what a great album
album holy [ __ ] what a great album anyway maybe one bad song on on uh
anyway maybe one bad song on on uh somewhere in time yeah uh heaven can
somewhere in time yeah uh heaven can wait bad chorus i don't know what he
wait bad chorus i don't know what he says but i like that song i like the
says but i like that song i like the song i don't like the chorus if it was a
song i don't like the chorus if it was a different chorus the song is good but
different chorus the song is good but what's the one bad song that you think
what's the one bad song that you think on that one
on that one that's what i'm saying that that record
that's what i'm saying that that record does not have a bad song on it that's
does not have a bad song on it that's the only song i would consider bad but
the only song i would consider bad but it's really not that bad it's not that
it's really not that bad it's not that bad yeah you know that's not the same
bad yeah you know that's not the same chorus it's a good record the summer and
chorus it's a good record the summer and time is is uh you know obviously a
time is is uh you know obviously a little more a little more uh
little more a little more uh froggy i guess you can say
froggy i guess you can say with their musical venture in somewhere
with their musical venture in somewhere in time but you know the leads on you
in time but you know the leads on you know wasted years somewhere in time
know wasted years somewhere in time uh the loneliness of the long distance
uh the loneliness of the long distance run what a great song and the heaviest
run what a great song and the heaviest song what's what's the heaviest son that
song what's what's the heaviest son that um
um sea of madness oh yeah
sea of madness oh yeah that bass line that's probably one of
that bass line that's probably one of the heaviest riffs that iron man never
the heaviest riffs that iron man never wrote that they ever wrote was uh
wrote that they ever wrote was uh that sea of madness was that that
that sea of madness was that that bassline it's probably one of the
bassline it's probably one of the heaviest songs ever broken
heaviest songs ever broken yeah that's a that's a good [ __ ] word
yeah that's a that's a good [ __ ] word rock and metal plus asks so were wolves
rock and metal plus asks so were wolves being big in america no they were not
being big in america no they were not i have i have a couple of those big
i have i have a couple of those big records but no they were not thinking
records but no they were not thinking about they were not big for sure
about they were not big for sure okay wait bailey's original band right
okay wait bailey's original band right yeah is that why he asked that yep
yeah is that why he asked that yep i'm okay with that
i'm okay with that yeah
yeah yeah i mean he was a good singer he just
yeah i mean he was a good singer he just wasn't a good maiden singer right
wasn't a good maiden singer right yeah now i think something just to wrap
yeah now i think something just to wrap up with iron maiden i think a good
up with iron maiden i think a good follow-up to y'all's you know
follow-up to y'all's you know observation that yeah would they have
observation that yeah would they have would dino have been able to
would dino have been able to have done the same things for maiden
have done the same things for maiden i i think you see diana's limitations
i i think you see diana's limitations after he left iron maiden i mean he was
after he left iron maiden i mean he was in a lot of projects from gog magog to
in a lot of projects from gog magog to paul dano's battle zone
paul dano's battle zone and none of those projects ever really
and none of those projects ever really got any traction and yeah battlezone had
got any traction and yeah battlezone had i mean
you know they did you know he has a little later it was you know in a band
little later it was you know in a band called you know killers and
called you know killers and you know there were always decent tunes
you know there were always decent tunes here and there but i you know they never
here and there but i you know they never broke you know paul dano never broke
broke you know paul dano never broke through again with any of those other
through again with any of those other things and uh
things and uh you listen to him sing on those albums
you listen to him sing on those albums compared to you know bruce singing on
compared to you know bruce singing on yeah you know the iron maiden albums and
yeah you know the iron maiden albums and yeah there's you know
yeah there's you know there's no contest you know that you
there's no contest you know that you know they they had the front man to make
know they they had the front man to make them
them you know an arena band for the ages uh
you know an arena band for the ages uh in bruce and they probably didn't have
in bruce and they probably didn't have that in paul as much and i love those
that in paul as much and i love those first two iron maiden albums they're two
first two iron maiden albums they're two of my favorites uh both of them the
of my favorites uh both of them the self-titled and killers
you know you like chocolate and you like peanut butter but maybe you don't like
peanut butter but maybe you don't like them together
them together and that's what it was kind of like that
and that's what it was kind of like that for it was kind of like that for iron
for it was kind of like that for iron maiden with bruce because bruce singing
maiden with bruce because bruce singing bruce bruce singing samson yep mm-hmm
bruce bruce singing samson yep mm-hmm you know
that was a beautiful record at best headhunter was that the name of the
headhunter was that the name of the album that was a great album i had
album that was a great album i had tactics or what was it uh head-on and uh
tactics or what was it uh head-on and uh something head-on and uh
something head-on and uh that's the one great album i used to
that's the one great album i used to have that cd i can't find it i don't
have that cd i can't find it i don't know what it is it was just okay for me
know what it is it was just okay for me and it broke if you play it now it's
and it broke if you play it now it's even like you can't even tell it's bruce
even like you can't even tell it's bruce dickinson it's like there's a lot of
dickinson it's like there's a lot of homo erotic lyrics on that album too
homo erotic lyrics on that album too it's really strange
it's really strange it has some weird tendencies
it has some weird tendencies yeah yeah you know bruce can you see you
yeah yeah you know bruce can you see you in the band
yeah bruce had sung in a band called speed you know before samson that did a
speed you know before samson that did a seven inch and uh
seven inch and uh yeah it's kind of pedestrian you know it
yeah it's kind of pedestrian you know it it's obviously a big rarity because you
it's obviously a big rarity because you know it's got him singing on it but
know it's got him singing on it but musically it's
musically it's really sort of you know a low-tier new
really sort of you know a low-tier new wave of british heavy metal stuff if it
wave of british heavy metal stuff if it didn't have bruce dickinson on it nobody
didn't have bruce dickinson on it nobody would care about that speed single it it
would care about that speed single it it would be an afterthought yeah yeah
would be an afterthought yeah yeah yeah yeah but like you said you know you
yeah yeah but like you said you know you just put the right ingredients together
just put the right ingredients together um his vocals with maiden's music and
um his vocals with maiden's music and that that was it you know with steve
that that was it you know with steve ayers and
ayers and bruce dickinson which by the i guess
bruce dickinson which by the i guess they like
they like apparently like early in their christian
apparently like early in their christian i don't know if this is still the case
i don't know if this is still the case but they would literally want to like
but they would literally want to like choke each other in the studio like they
choke each other in the studio like they were they would like have to be
were they would like have to be separated apparently while they were
separated apparently while they were recording
recording steve wrote the superior songs i mean
steve wrote the superior songs i mean bruce would bring songs like bring your
bruce would bring songs like bring your daughter to the slaughter to the table
daughter to the slaughter to the table which they release as a single and that
which they release as a single and that song is [ __ ] garbage that's a hot
song is [ __ ] garbage that's a hot garbage bag
garbage bag terrible
terrible hot garbage
hot garbage bring your daughter to the slaughter let
bring your daughter to the slaughter let her go let her go
her go let her go let her go
let her go steve harris is the man i mean steve
steve harris is the man i mean steve harris is the man bruce's songs aren't
harris is the man bruce's songs aren't as good they're just not steve's the man
as good they're just not steve's the man he's
he's yeah
yeah anyway who's next that was that was ken
anyway who's next that was that was ken and it is alan's turn and talk a lot
and it is alan's turn and talk a lot because i have to go pee i'll right back
because i have to go pee i'll right back if i ran out of things to say the turkey

so i just turned and looked i was just like they had a singing trick he had on
like they had a singing trick he had on display and my wife literally put her
display and my wife literally put her hand in her face and i heard about her
hand in her face and i heard about her oh god why did i tell him about it
oh god why did i tell him about it because i turned around i did a u-turn
because i turned around i did a u-turn right there you know out of the checkout
right there you know out of the checkout lane went back and found it just like
lane went back and found it just like oh you're coming home with daddy
oh you're coming home with daddy and uh so yep
and uh so yep we use it every year much to her
we use it every year much to her shame very cool
shame very cool i gotta have a little fun during the
i gotta have a little fun during the holidays for sure but yes let me get
holidays for sure but yes let me get back on track here and uh we'll discuss

bunch that no one's mentioned yet including
including queens rights the warnings that's right
queens rights the warnings that's right uh you know you know this banjo they had

influence stuff but it's got jeff tate you know with an amazing voice but you
you know with an amazing voice but you know the songwriting here they're
know the songwriting here they're they're leaving behind all that kind of
they're leaving behind all that kind of fantasy stuff and going you in a much
fantasy stuff and going you in a much you know different you know directions
you know different you know directions almost you know sci-fi overtones which
almost you know sci-fi overtones which is unusual for heavy metal at that point
is unusual for heavy metal at that point uh you know really interesting
uh you know really interesting production on it every song kind of has
production on it every song kind of has its own identity they're well written
its own identity they're well written the playing is great
the playing is great tate's vocals especially through this
tate's vocals especially through this era are just uh incomparable and he's
era are just uh incomparable and he's the only singer i can think of off the
the only singer i can think of off the top of my head that could rival
top of my head that could rival you know michael kiskey in his prime
you know michael kiskey in his prime and and this is just you know their
and and this is just you know their first full-length album and this is you
first full-length album and this is you know
know they obviously you know go on to mega
they obviously you know go on to mega stardom you know a few albums later and
stardom you know a few albums later and this album's already better than what
this album's already better than what i don't know 80 90 percent of bands
i don't know 80 90 percent of bands would ever make in their career in the
would ever make in their career in the 1980s they're already just absolutely
1980s they're already just absolutely putting together a gem of an album
putting together a gem of an album uh and they haven't even really found
uh and they haven't even really found their footing as a band yet uh so yeah
their footing as a band yet uh so yeah uh it's not my favorite queen strike
uh it's not my favorite queen strike album uh
album uh for that i'd have to go with rage for
for that i'd have to go with rage for order oh
order oh this one is
this one is this one is a fantastic album in its own
this one is a fantastic album in its own right it's different queens right you
right it's different queens right you know they changed you know very rapidly
know they changed you know very rapidly over those early albums and you just
over those early albums and you just can't go wrong and the warning's just
can't go wrong and the warning's just another one of these just
another one of these just hallmark albums from 1984 uh this year
hallmark albums from 1984 uh this year is so loaded it's just insane the stuff
is so loaded it's just insane the stuff that you know what i like about that
that you know what i like about that record is that it's just still got a
record is that it's just still got a piece of that power metal vibe to it too
piece of that power metal vibe to it too sure mm-hmm
sure mm-hmm a little bit of that power metal in
a little bit of that power metal in there you know that's a great
there you know that's a great observation ken it sure does you know
observation ken it sure does you know taking from that first ep that still got
taking from that first ep that still got a piece that the little piece that
a piece that the little piece that they're going off into something
they're going off into something different obviously but it's a little
different obviously but it's a little bit of that power metal in there
bit of that power metal in there i think that's what i like most about
i think that's what i like most about that record but jeff tate man
that record but jeff tate man he's a world-class singer oh totally oh
he's a world-class singer oh totally oh yeah yeah the guy is a world he's still
yeah yeah the guy is a world he's still got it today yeah oh yeah he's still
got it today yeah oh yeah he's still sorry i mean he does you know i mean we
sorry i mean he does you know i mean we all get older you know nobody's getting
all get older you know nobody's getting any younger
any younger but you know so maybe he's he's not
but you know so maybe he's he's not where he wants to
where he wants to be physically or whatever so i'm being
be physically or whatever so i'm being told this by others that said oh he's
told this by others that said oh he's wishing he could do this or that well
wishing he could do this or that well he's wishing he was still in queens
he's wishing he was still in queens right i think
queens is wishing he was still in queensrack i think no i don't know that
queensrack i think no i don't know that new guy is good he's good he's still got
new guy is good he's good he's still got josh yeah but in terms of exposure
josh yeah but in terms of exposure somebody told me to get the new queen i
somebody told me to get the new queen i haven't got i'm not going to be good
haven't got i'm not going to be good is it mind-blowing no but the guy sounds
is it mind-blowing no but the guy sounds like jeff tate and he brings a little
like jeff tate and he brings a little bit of other things too but see
bit of other things too but see so he sounds like jeff tate yep
so he sounds like jeff tate yep i know
i know you know what would you why would you do
you know what would you why would you do why would you want to do that you know i
why would you want to do that you know i get the impression that jeff tate wasn't
get the impression that jeff tate wasn't easy to be with around
easy to be with around i get the fact that he was maybe not
i get the fact that he was maybe not playing with a full deck of cards which
playing with a full deck of cards which make you know you start touring with a
make you know you start touring with a band as much as they were touring i mean
band as much as they were touring i mean you know songs like silent lucidity and
you know songs like silent lucidity and jet city woman hit they're a big [ __ ]
jet city woman hit they're a big [ __ ] band they're big they're huge they're
band they're big they're huge they're all over mtv they're touring the world
all over mtv they're touring the world they're in buses together and you have
they're in buses together and you have to deal with a personality that's maybe
to deal with a personality that's maybe a bit crazy
i mean they fired him they fired him so that i mean
so that i mean it's hard to to cut someone that has
it's hard to to cut someone that has that great of a voice loose you know
that great of a voice loose you know they do yeah that's halloween did it
they do yeah that's halloween did it with kiska i mean you know that guy's
with kiska i mean you know that guy's got the golden voice of angels and they
got the golden voice of angels and they he i don't know if he left or if he got
he i don't know if he left or if he got booted they'll probably each
booted they'll probably each camp will tell you different but um
camp will tell you different but um you know how do you cut your main singer
you know how do you cut your main singer that's so great that's the defining
that's so great that's the defining point of your sound let them go that's a
point of your sound let them go that's a very risky often destructive move
very risky often destructive move that's yeah that's going to be a huge
that's yeah that's going to be a huge a huge discussion between the band
a huge discussion between the band members to say
members to say yeah we're going to take the face of
yeah we're going to take the face of this band away
this band away yeah
yeah he
i mean that did happen you know much later in the career when the music scene
later in the career when the music scene and even queens right themselves were
and even queens right themselves were almost a different entity
almost a different entity but yeah it was still a big a big step
but yeah it was still a big a big step for sure and for the record i did like
for sure and for the record i did like empire i did too
empire i did too empire has some very good songs i don't
empire has some very good songs i don't like the album overall but the good

bigger bands right now maybe that's what you want to say so i'm gonna i'm gonna
you want to say so i'm gonna i'm gonna start going to a little more of the
start going to a little more of the lesser known yeah awesome i'm gonna kind
lesser known yeah awesome i'm gonna kind of abandon my stack of uh
of abandon my stack of uh venoms and bands that people know about
venoms and bands that people know about and get into a little more of the
and get into a little more of the obscure
obscure what i'll call obscure stuff from 1984
what i'll call obscure stuff from 1984 but it's not my turn so i'm just going

yeah just heavy metal man i mean do you like your
heavy metal man i mean do you like your heavy metal
heavy metal heavy metal e
heavy metal e i mean it's no frills it's it's not
i mean it's no frills it's it's not going to make um you know probably
going to make um you know probably anybody's top 10
anybody's top 10 for sure but it's a it's a good
for sure but it's a it's a good solid heavy metal record
solid heavy metal record um
um it's got pretty much anything you'd want
it's got pretty much anything you'd want out of a california-based heavy metal
out of a california-based heavy metal band at the time in 1984
band at the time in 1984 it's fairly catchy it's fairly evil at
it's fairly catchy it's fairly evil at times sounding
times sounding again nothing that's going to be over
again nothing that's going to be over the top nothing that's going to make you
the top nothing that's going to make you um
um want it every day it's not going to be
want it every day it's not going to be it it's not going to probably be your
it it's not going to probably be your regular cup of joe in the morning
regular cup of joe in the morning but it's still a pretty good record and
but it's still a pretty good record and uh you know i'm just going to tie it in
uh you know i'm just going to tie it in that it's it's good enough to be
that it's it's good enough to be mentioned
mentioned um as
um as a more obscure man from 1984 that
a more obscure man from 1984 that doesn't get talked about but um the
doesn't get talked about but um the tie-in is you know cliff burton was uh
tie-in is you know cliff burton was uh the bass player this one his band before
the bass player this one his band before metallica he was actually playing in
metallica he was actually playing in this band when he
this band when he um auditioned uh joined metallica he was
um auditioned uh joined metallica he was actually playing and did record on their

to talk about yag panzer so now is your time now is your time to shine
folks have been and ken seguin into some more obscure stuff so that's a good time
more obscure stuff so that's a good time i want to do uh i'm gonna do two uh one
i want to do uh i'm gonna do two uh one quick and one less quick then uh since
quick and one less quick then uh since we're hitting some of the more obscure
we're hitting some of the more obscure ones i don't have a ton to say about
ones i don't have a ton to say about this but uh
this but uh some folks are watching i know this is a
some folks are watching i know this is a sentimental favorite for some folks
sentimental favorite for some folks sacred rights
sacred rights first album came out in 84 this was a
first album came out in 84 this was a hawaiian band which
hawaiian band which you not a scene usually if you think
you not a scene usually if you think hawaii you're of course thinking marty
hawaii you're of course thinking marty friedman projects but there were other
friedman projects but there were other bands from hawaii
bands from hawaii and sacred right did some very uh cool
and sacred right did some very uh cool elms this one is the perfect example of
elms this one is the perfect example of an album i'll play
an album i'll play really like it put it on the shelf and
really like it put it on the shelf and kind of forget about it for a year or
kind of forget about it for a year or two and then i take it back i'm just
two and then i take it back i'm just like man that's really good why don't i
like man that's really good why don't i play that more often
play that more often uh really
uh really you good sounding band they really were
you good sounding band they really were very tight uh very good songwriters
very tight uh very good songwriters excellent a great example of where heavy
excellent a great example of where heavy metal in the us was at in 84. a lot of
metal in the us was at in 84. a lot of people will know this album was just
people will know this album was just like a plain white cover with the band's
like a plain white cover with the band's logo done a little bit different um it
logo done a little bit different um it got pressed several different times
got pressed several different times early on this is one of the
early on this is one of the i don't think this is the first pressing
i don't think this is the first pressing i get them mixed up a little bit it's a
i get them mixed up a little bit it's a little hard to keep them straight but
little hard to keep them straight but yeah this is one of the earlier
yeah this is one of the earlier pressings before that white cover
pressings before that white cover uh became really prominent so yeah the
uh became really prominent so yeah the secretary all the colored pencils
secretary all the colored pencils they they they went to town with that
they they they went to town with that box of crayolas right there they sure
box of crayolas right there they sure did
did every everything you can cram on that
every everything you can cram on that cover is on there somewhere so like ken
cover is on there somewhere so like ken said this is not an album that you're
said this is not an album that you're going to you ever have to go
going to you ever have to go unnecessarily like you know the
unnecessarily like you know the best album ever list but it is a very
best album ever list but it is a very good listen uh if you're ever and they
good listen uh if you're ever and they did some more albums too this was not a
did some more albums too this was not a one and done kind of thing they did
one and done kind of thing they did relocate to the mainland eventually
relocate to the mainland eventually and put out some additional albums so
and put out some additional albums so yeah if it's one that you see
yeah if it's one that you see don't yeah don't let the watercolors
don't yeah don't let the watercolors there throw you off
there throw you off it is a very solid one
it is a very solid one um
um but yeah if folks want this one then
but yeah if folks want this one then let's do this one
let's do this one colorado again not what you think of as
colorado again not what you think of as the most uh
the most uh biggest hotbed for heavy metal in the
biggest hotbed for heavy metal in the 80s but they had jagdpanzer and
80s but they had jagdpanzer and jagdpanzer made ample destruction and
jagdpanzer made ample destruction and this is probably a top 10 album of all
this is probably a top 10 album of all time for me
time for me um
um it just perfectly hits that same us
it just perfectly hits that same us power metal vibe that we were discussing
power metal vibe that we were discussing a few minutes ago
a few minutes ago with uh omen and bands like that it's
with uh omen and bands like that it's got incredibly strong vocals with harry
got incredibly strong vocals with harry conklin
conklin it's got you know joey tafolla uh you
it's got you know joey tafolla uh you know guitar whiz kid it's got the iconic
know guitar whiz kid it's got the iconic cover art just killer track list
cover art just killer track list um
um they made like you know 12 different
they made like you know 12 different versions of it back in the day i may or
versions of it back in the day i may or may not own about 10 of them you can't
may not own about 10 of them you can't prove that it's all speculation you
prove that it's all speculation you heard on the internet don't listen to
heard on the internet don't listen to the internet kids
the internet kids um but yeah this album just start to
um but yeah this album just start to finish is amazingly strong love it to
finish is amazingly strong love it to death
death not a bad track on it
not a bad track on it that's a great record i love that record
that's a great record i love that record i i love that one to death i almost
i i love that one to death i almost bought another copy of it last week but
bought another copy of it last week but it it was way way way too expensive
it it was way way way too expensive probably got a cd copy of it under that
probably got a cd copy of it under that hat right now don't you uh i might have
hat right now don't you uh i might have five or six copies
five or six copies marty did you know that hat dances too i
marty did you know that hat dances too i didn't realize it danced i didn't know i
didn't realize it danced i didn't know i didn't see it dance
didn't see it dance the hat twerks it twerks
the hat twerks it twerks it does it all
there's everything you could want it to do and more right
do and more right i don't know how to know what the more
i don't know how to know what the more is
is i just don't
i just don't all right we'll save that for the after
all right we'll save that for the after hours uh extended the only fans the
hours uh extended the only fans the heavy metal earth the owner only fans
heavy metal earth the owner only fans heavy turkey only fans
heavy turkey only fans heavy drumsticks well people are talking
heavy drumsticks well people are talking about it so i'm going to jump out of the
about it so i'm going to jump out of the out of line here and uh voivod warren
out of line here and uh voivod warren payne
payne i actually heard
i actually heard this is the first voivod album i ever
this is the first voivod album i ever heard
heard and um
and um since i'm a big venom fan
since i'm a big venom fan it's not too far removed from what venom
it's not too far removed from what venom was doing these guys are very much a
was doing these guys are very much a venom influence there's a lot of punk on
venom influence there's a lot of punk on this
this there's a lot of weird they're from
there's a lot of weird they're from canada from some weird nuclear plant
canada from some weird nuclear plant town
town um
um up in
up in canada
what can you say about this band they were completely unique
were completely unique i love blackie's blower base sound
i love blackie's blower base sound always whenever i have to record
always whenever i have to record something with bass
something with bass i hear that bass tone in my head
i hear that bass tone in my head i just can't get it out even though
i just can't get it out even though sometimes a clean bass is what's best i
sometimes a clean bass is what's best i still want the blower bass tone but
still want the blower bass tone but this is a very influential album voivod
this is a very influential album voivod changed very dramatically from this
changed very dramatically from this album onto their second album roar
album onto their second album roar roar is more driving more sci-fi
roar is more driving more sci-fi tinged before they landed on killing
tinged before they landed on killing technology which
technology which is where i think they really found their
is where i think they really found their true sound but um their beginnings are
true sound but um their beginnings are very much rooted in merciful fate and
very much rooted in merciful fate and venom worship you listen to their early
venom worship you listen to their early demos
demos they do a lot of versatile fate and
they do a lot of versatile fate and venom covers on the demos
venom covers on the demos um so you can kind of tell you know from
um so you can kind of tell you know from a cover band to what they became
a cover band to what they became uh he's got the classic voivod warriors
uh he's got the classic voivod warriors of ice suck your bone
of ice suck your bone um
um black city nuclear war blower
black city nuclear war blower i think blower is the song that was on
i think blower is the song that was on the best of metal blade vol 1. i can't
the best of metal blade vol 1. i can't remember to be completely honest

little best of running wild playlist and it took me like three cdrs to get
it took me like three cdrs to get everything on that i wanted to
everything on that i wanted to just so many killer tracks and
just so many killer tracks and right marty it's a great album but i
right marty it's a great album but i think you're also right that had they
think you're also right that had they stayed on that course
stayed on that course they probably would not have
they probably would not have lasted as long as they did and
lasted as long as they did and you have to look no further you know
you have to look no further you know than one of their their uh you know
than one of their their uh you know uh colleagues at the time a band like
uh colleagues at the time a band like iron angel you know similar sounds
iron angel you know similar sounds similar tone really good stuff they made
similar tone really good stuff they made two albums and that was kind of you know
two albums and that was kind of you know about all anybody heard of them they got
about all anybody heard of them they got lost in the mix because nothing made
lost in the mix because nothing made them stand out as much crap as running
them stand out as much crap as running wild took at times about the pirate
wild took at times about the pirate thing it made them stand out it was
thing it made them stand out it was something people could latch onto
something people could latch onto and uh but as metal mickey pointed out
and uh but as metal mickey pointed out in his recent uh running wild video
in his recent uh running wild video it wasn't all just silly pirate stuff it
it wasn't all just silly pirate stuff it wasn't every song wasn't just yo ho ho
wasn't every song wasn't just yo ho ho and a bottle of rum you know they used
and a bottle of rum you know they used the pirate stuff for some songs but you
the pirate stuff for some songs but you know there were a lot of songs you know
know there were a lot of songs you know about other historical topics just in
about other historical topics just in general motorcycle topics you know
general motorcycle topics you know uh you know
uh you know overall themes of freedom and liberty
overall themes of freedom and liberty and stuff that
and stuff that you know
you know the pirate things you know was one
the pirate things you know was one aspect it was a good visual aspect it
aspect it was a good visual aspect it gave them an identity but it wasn't
gave them an identity but it wasn't they weren't just doing you know silly
they weren't just doing you know silly pirate songs you know song in and song
pirate songs you know song in and song out because that probably would have you
out because that probably would have you know
know gotten old pretty fast and i see that
gotten old pretty fast and i see that with you know current quote-unquote
with you know current quote-unquote pirate metal bands i've listened to
pirate metal bands i've listened to those and they're fun for two or three
those and they're fun for two or three songs and then it just gets old
songs and then it just gets old um running wild never got old running
um running wild never got old running wild still they released an album within
wild still they released an album within the past couple of weeks and it's a
the past couple of weeks and it's a great album they're still they're still
great album they're still they're still nailing it i wonder if the pirate themed
nailing it i wonder if the pirate themed running well was more of a label ploy as
running well was more of a label ploy as well
well suppose that's a good question ken um
suppose that's a good question ken um carl very much liked bans on noise to
carl very much liked bans on noise to have an identity
have an identity so david was saying the author of the
so david was saying the author of the noise book he we had him on
noise book he we had him on yep yeah he really liked that but uh the
yep yeah he really liked that but uh the accounts you know that the folks have
accounts you know that the folks have said is that ralph was just he was very
said is that ralph was just he was very into history and stuff and that he went
into history and stuff and that he went and saw
and saw a movie or play you know that was kind
a movie or play you know that was kind of a pirate thing and he kind of got
of a pirate thing and he kind of got he's like you know hey this is all yo
he's like you know hey this is all yo really cool visually appealing it had
really cool visually appealing it had happened right after the disastrous uh
happened right after the disastrous uh us tour that you know they got there
us tour that you know they got there basically got sent home early because
basically got sent home early because they were so poorly received
they were so poorly received and they were kind of at a crossroads
and they were kind of at a crossroads trying to figure out what to do and
trying to figure out what to do and ralph had seen this pirate thing it was
ralph had seen this pirate thing it was kind of into the history and all that
kind of into the history and all that anyway and just felt like yeah that
anyway and just felt like yeah that would all come together and carl was
would all come together and carl was even though it was maybe a weird choice
even though it was maybe a weird choice for an image you know he liked those
for an image you know he liked those bands to have something unique that he
bands to have something unique that he could use to sell them and
could use to sell them and so yeah i think it was probably more the
so yeah i think it was probably more the band's just ralph's decision but i'm
band's just ralph's decision but i'm sure the label uh
sure the label uh basically uh was happy to take that idea
basically uh was happy to take that idea and run with it
yeah it i don't think it hurt him no no great
i don't think it hurt him no no great band i think for every person that maybe
band i think for every person that maybe you know turned their nose up at it you
you know turned their nose up at it you know there were two other people that
know there were two other people that listened to it and realized that it was
listened to it and realized that it was [ __ ] amazing
[ __ ] amazing everybody check out metal mickey's uh uh
everybody check out metal mickey's uh uh ranking of the albums i don't know that
ranking of the albums i don't know that i agree with him on a lot of the ranking
i agree with him on a lot of the ranking but he does a very good job at breaking
but he does a very good job at breaking down all the albums he did a good job on
down all the albums he did a good job on that it was a good one yeah metal mickey
that it was a good one yeah metal mickey channel for that
channel for that yeah i'd have him ranked you know some
yeah i'd have him ranked you know some things differently too but he did a nice
things differently too but he did a nice job on it for sure he did
job on it for sure he did and that is
and that is that's
uh okay up you know what i'll i'll go back a little bit to
back a little bit to now this band is
now this band is very well known today
very well known today as has been been for the last couple
as has been been for the last couple deck a few decades but this particular
deck a few decades but this particular record
record i don't think was much talked about when
i don't think was much talked about when it was released
it was released um because it's probably not
their best it's you know even for me i love this
it's you know even for me i love this band today but and i love their

mean i still enjoy some of the later stormwick stuff oh probably not as much
stormwick stuff oh probably not as much as the earlier stuff like this one
as the earlier stuff like this one yeah um
yeah um but uh eric bauer said derek you should
but uh eric bauer said derek you should take it you should i mean if it's not
take it you should i mean if it's not you know terribly priced i don't know
you know terribly priced i don't know what that goes for but it's not terribly
what that goes for but it's not terribly pricey i would definitely pick it up
pricey i would definitely pick it up eric you know you won't be disappointed
eric you know you won't be disappointed in it it's yeah they've been they've
in it it's yeah they've been they've been reissued so they shouldn't be too
been reissued so they shouldn't be too bad to pick up yeah i would i would say
bad to pick up yeah i would i would say go for it eric if it's not terribly
go for it eric if it's not terribly overpriced
overpriced yeah the firs the first three albums are
yeah the firs the first three albums are all really solid german 80s metal uh
all really solid german 80s metal uh they would have fit in on the noise
they would have fit in on the noise roster so easily alongside things like
roster so easily alongside things like rage and gravedigger but they never were
rage and gravedigger but they never were they never were on noise
they never were on noise which has always surprised me that
which has always surprised me that that's on scratch records
that's on scratch records which was a real small german label
which was a real small german label is that what this was done
is that what this was done that's what my glasses on again i
that's what my glasses on again i haven't but yeah
haven't but yeah yep yeah which i think they i think
yep yeah which i think they i think scratch also did the avenger
scratch also did the avenger ep before they changed their name to
ep before they changed their name to rage and moved over to uh
rage and moved over to uh to noise
to noise avenger
avenger prayers are steel
that's green yep
yep so yeah there were a scratch had a few
so yeah there were a scratch had a few good metal signs but they were
good metal signs but they were reportedly a really small operation so
reportedly a really small operation so none of their bands really
none of their bands really really became much but yeah i was always
really became much but yeah i was always surprised stormwich never got onto noise
surprised stormwich never got onto noise but
but having read david's book on carl it may
having read david's book on carl it may have just been that he already felt like
have just been that he already felt like between grave digger and you know a
between grave digger and you know a couple of bands like that that he
couple of bands like that that he already had that niche covered and he
already had that niche covered and he just didn't need another band like storm
just didn't need another band like storm witch on his roster at the time you know
witch on his roster at the time you know what i as far as i was concerned
what i as far as i was concerned mausoleum could have put out every heavy
mausoleum could have put out every heavy metal record needs
metal record needs i never got released as far as i was
i never got released as far as i was concerned
mausoleum versus metal blade you know
you know mausoleum i i try to any if mazda if
mausoleum i i try to any if mazda if there was a record and it just had the
there was a record and it just had the mausoleum
mausoleum immediately bought it
immediately bought it yeah mausoleum kellogg has a lot of good
yeah mausoleum kellogg has a lot of good stuff in it for sure
all right alan you're up next all right uh well
all right uh well i'm surprised marty hasn't mentioned
i'm surprised marty hasn't mentioned this one yet so someone's got to do it
this one yet so someone's got to do it um
um maybe favorite album by the band maybe
maybe favorite album by the band maybe second favorite i'm not sure uh
second favorite i'm not sure uh open the gates manila road 1984.

those early albums are you know
you know fun you know they're
fun you know they're some of them are leaning more in the 70s
some of them are leaning more in the 70s sometimes refining their foot but uh by
sometimes refining their foot but uh by crystal logic you know they were just
crystal logic you know they were just flat out [ __ ] heavy
flat out [ __ ] heavy and this one follows up and they don't
and this one follows up and they don't miss a beat uh again killer
miss a beat uh again killer fantasy artwork cover
fantasy artwork cover uh just great songs throughout the thing
uh just great songs throughout the thing you know some of these songs are getting
you know some of these songs are getting you know faster and more aggressive
you know faster and more aggressive you can tell he's starting to get
you can tell he's starting to get influenced by that stuff just a little
influenced by that stuff just a little bit just a little bit
bit just a little bit just a little bit here and there yeah
just a little bit here and there yeah but you know it's got you know just you
but you know it's got you know just you know big massive anthems like you know
know big massive anthems like you know ninth wave on here
ninth wave on here uh you know astronomica is classic oh

slow it down they almost get a little bit you know doomy uh
bit you know doomy uh tinges worked into the music hour of the
tinges worked into the music hour of the dragon is great on here
dragon is great on here uh
uh really hard to
really hard to argue against this uh
argue against this uh it's again probably more pick crystal
it's again probably more pick crystal logic is my favorite over this one but
logic is my favorite over this one but this runs a strong second on hey the
this runs a strong second on hey the right day of the week i might pick this
right day of the week i might pick this one that's my favorite uh
one that's my favorite uh that that era of manila road you know
that that era of manila road you know that's you know their heyday um they of
that's you know their heyday um they of course did lots of other good stuff but
course did lots of other good stuff but right there
right there around 83 84
around 83 84 they clicked and just made outstanding
they clicked and just made outstanding stuff
i didn't pick any manila i didn't pick miller road because i i didn't start
miller road because i i didn't start getting into them until
getting into them until 89 or 98 99 2000.
89 or 98 99 2000. um
um a late late up to them well i think like
a late late up to them well i think like a lot of people
a lot of people that's a band that
that's a band that he finally came back and
he finally came back and was able to reap some of the rewards of
was able to reap some of the rewards of his past whereas when manila road was
his past whereas when manila road was happening back in the day not many
happening back in the day not many people gave a [ __ ] about manila road
people gave a [ __ ] about manila road which is sad because it was great
which is sad because it was great [ __ ] stuff
[ __ ] stuff yep
yep but thankfully you got to see that
but thankfully you got to see that people care now and he got to
people care now and he got to enjoy some of that success
enjoy some of that success with uh
with uh the last half of his career for sure
the last half of his career for sure yes he did get to he finally got you
yes he did get to he finally got you know the accolades he deserved yep
know the accolades he deserved yep all right marty what you got next

in mint condition during a time where
during a time where the wonderful time of the 90s where
the wonderful time of the 90s where people did not give a [ __ ] about lionel
people did not give a [ __ ] about lionel and i say i wish those times would come
and i say i wish those times would come back because i love going into record
back because i love going into record stores and buying these classics for
stores and buying these classics for [ __ ] dirt cheap but um
[ __ ] dirt cheap but um yeah i mean this is you know thanks to
yeah i mean this is you know thanks to metal blade uh metal blade um volume one
metal blade uh metal blade um volume one volume two whatever the those comps
volume two whatever the those comps turned me onto trouble i think my
turned me onto trouble i think my favorite trouble is run to the light
favorite trouble is run to the light but the first three are classics the

um the lord will be refuge for the
the lord will be refuge for the oppressed a refuge in times of trouble
oppressed a refuge in times of trouble you know everybody talked to how about
you know everybody talked to how about these guys were a christian band they
these guys were a christian band they called them i think the label tried to
called them i think the label tried to push them as white metal
push them as white metal which they didn't really feel that was a
which they didn't really feel that was a very um suitable
very um suitable terminology for them but um
terminology for them but um you know they tend to they they're kind
you know they tend to they they're kind of like sabbath you know sabbath tended
of like sabbath you know sabbath tended to sing on the the side of the lord
to sing on the the side of the lord quite often although they were often
quite often although they were often misrepresented as being an evil band if
misrepresented as being an evil band if you listen to black sabbath's lyrics
you listen to black sabbath's lyrics there's a lot of positivity and light
there's a lot of positivity and light and jesus type stuff and i think trouble
and jesus type stuff and i think trouble that's just kind of the how they
that's just kind of the how they followed suit
followed suit they followed the sabbath
they followed the sabbath the sabbath uh trajectory into writing
the sabbath uh trajectory into writing lyrics do i think these guys were stone
lyrics do i think these guys were stone dead christians i don't know i honestly
dead christians i don't know i honestly i don't give a [ __ ] i don't care
i don't give a [ __ ] i don't care great great absolute doom from chicago
great great absolute doom from chicago ken stomping ground
ken stomping ground oh yeah
oh yeah yeah yeah a lot of cool things like
yeah yeah a lot of cool things like about that even you if you want to call
about that even you if you want to call him a christian metal band that's fine
him a christian metal band that's fine i always thought they were a good
i always thought they were a good example of how you could do
example of how you could do christian metal very well without just
christian metal very well without just having to beat people over the head with
having to beat people over the head with you know jesus loves you
you know jesus loves you you know la la la he is the rock you
you know la la la he is the rock you know that was always a weakness for a
know that was always a weakness for a lot of christian bands was you know they
lot of christian bands was you know they could play heavy metal just fine but
could play heavy metal just fine but lyrically they got so stuck on just
lyrically they got so stuck on just hammering the message that you got tired
hammering the message that you got tired of it and trouble did not do that uh you
of it and trouble did not do that uh you know if they had any of those themes
know if they had any of those themes worked into the lyrics it was much you
worked into the lyrics it was much you know
know they were much more clever on how they
they were much more clever on how they did it and it worked well
did it and it worked well but yeah lots of neat things about that
but yeah lots of neat things about that album it was the first thing metal blade
album it was the first thing metal blade did on colored vinyl
did on colored vinyl the white vinyl white metal band kind of
the white vinyl white metal band kind of connection there was kind of fun it was
connection there was kind of fun it was the first uh
the first uh non
non la area band that metal blade signed and
la area band that metal blade signed and released something by
released something by uh everything up to that point had
uh everything up to that point had always been had been southern california
always been had been southern california for the label
for the label and yes they have that classic
and yes they have that classic uh what i think of you know is a very
uh what i think of you know is a very classic chicago metal sound which can
classic chicago metal sound which can maybe you can build on but it seemed
maybe you can build on but it seemed like a lot of bands from that era in
like a lot of bands from that era in chicago had that
chicago had that they weren't i wouldn't call them doomy
they weren't i wouldn't call them doomy bands but they had that doomy tinge
bands but they had that doomy tinge overlaying on this classic heavy metal
overlaying on this classic heavy metal structure with bands like trouble and
structure with bands like trouble and enforcer and battalion and war cry and
enforcer and battalion and war cry and stuff
i can't stand trouble why
why the worst [ __ ] bandit ever came out
the worst [ __ ] bandit ever came out of chicago but anyways
of chicago but anyways everybody i know i just pissed off
everybody i know i just pissed off everybody in the comments and i guess
everybody in the comments and i guess [ __ ]
[ __ ] i get so much [ __ ] for my friends here
i get so much [ __ ] for my friends here in chicago
in chicago i cannot [ __ ] stay in trouble
my weird take on them is i actually like the 90s stoner stuff more than i like
the 90s stoner stuff more than i like the 80s stuff i am going to pass on
the 80s stuff i am going to pass on trouble thank you
trouble thank you that's okay can i interest you in some
that's okay can i interest you in some war cry good sir war cry we can talk
war cry good sir war cry we can talk about war cry funeral [ __ ] death strike
about war cry funeral [ __ ] death strike and master all day but
we could talk about tyrant's reign uh we could talk about all sorts of chicago
could talk about all sorts of chicago bands with trouble paradox
bands with trouble paradox paradox
paradox um
um trouble
trouble you'll find no trouble here
you'll find no trouble here he has no trouble with trouble it's not
he has no trouble with trouble it's not considered trouble there will be no
considered trouble there will be no trouble here um
trouble here um anyways we'll move on

warlord the cannons of defense of destruction
warlord is unknown but also well-known uh
uh most folks of course think deliver us
most folks of course think deliver us yeah the first thing they did
yeah the first thing they did ah you know it's a weird band you know
ah you know it's a weird band you know it's mostly just a studio project kind
it's mostly just a studio project kind of a sessions you know
of a sessions you know thing and you know there's overlap you
thing and you know there's overlap you know they had guys come in and out of
know they had guys come in and out of the band but
the band but music just you know
music just you know freaking incredible powerful
freaking incredible powerful uh
uh but yeah very very clean at the same
but yeah very very clean at the same time uh you know
time uh you know very talented great tracks you know
very talented great tracks you know start to finish this is
start to finish this is again they had deliver us which is like
again they had deliver us which is like one of those little you know six track
one of those little you know six track mini
mini lps or long eps you know they've got you
lps or long eps you know they've got you know this album and then
know this album and then they had another album but it was
they had another album but it was basically almost just a lot of the songs
basically almost just a lot of the songs redone overall it only had one or two
redone overall it only had one or two originals on the last album so the
originals on the last album so the discography is very weird you know which
discography is very weird you know which again it really wasn't a functioning
again it really wasn't a functioning band overall but uh yeah they've come to
band overall but uh yeah they've come to be you know a huge influence on a lot of
be you know a huge influence on a lot of things to come
things to come and yeah got this in a little record
and yeah got this in a little record store in texas in the mid 90s that same

i'm an anthrax fan and i think once they got back together with joey their last
got back together with joey their last two albums are really good
two albums are really good i don't i don't really see a lot of
i don't i don't really see a lot of people talking about worship music or
people talking about worship music or um for all kings i think i listed both
um for all kings i think i listed both those albums a lot i thought they were
those albums a lot i thought they were really good but there's a lot of charm
really good but there's a lot of charm and heart and really good songwriting on
and heart and really good songwriting on this first anthrax album fistful of
this first anthrax album fistful of metal
metal it wasn't metallica maybe not but it
it wasn't metallica maybe not but it definitely sits on the same throne for
definitely sits on the same throne for sure
sure good stuff
good stuff what's your favorite what's your
what's your favorite what's your favorite bio
favorite bio um persistence of time
um persistence of time i love among the living it's a great i
i love among the living it's a great i love that record too but persistence of
love that record too but persistence of time is anthrax but dark you know they
time is anthrax but dark you know they have a lot of dark themes on that record
have a lot of dark themes on that record um
um good that's a good record i mean i like
good that's a good record i mean i like a lot of the early stuff too but
a lot of the early stuff too but not john bush not john i'm not a john

stadium i like it too but it's a little goofy it's a goofy it is
goofy it's a goofy it is yeah all right
yeah all right anthrax for me is i like the odd
anthrax for me is i like the odd numbered albums a lot more than the even
numbered albums a lot more than the even numbered albums so fistful
numbered albums so fistful among the living and persistence a lot
among the living and persistence a lot more than state of euphoria or uh
more than state of euphoria or uh the
the spreading the disease
spreading the disease right or yeah
okay ken you're up next oh me again um all right i'll keep in the um
um all right i'll keep in the um [Music]
[Music] i think this record was a little
i think this record was a little although it's on a big label
although it's on a big label it's on road runner um
it's on road runner um you know people talked about this ban a
you know people talked about this ban a lot this came out in 84. i just thought
lot this came out in 84. i just thought this i always liked that i liked their
this i always liked that i liked their couple records they put out spartan
couple records they put out spartan warrior
warrior oh yeah
that's that shitty heavy metal big [ __ ] chickadee
big [ __ ] chickadee [Laughter]
[Laughter] [Music]
again you know i just want to show some records that don't get talked about a
records that don't get talked about a lot you know um ever talking about 1984
lot you know um ever talking about 1984 this was released in 84. it's just got
this was released in 84. it's just got the you know trashy heavy metal vibes
the you know trashy heavy metal vibes you know again probably not going to
you know again probably not going to make anybody's top 10 except the band
make anybody's top 10 except the band you know the band this is probably the
you know the band this is probably the best album the band's ever heard
best album the band's ever heard but um
but um you know it's it's a it's it's solid
you know it's it's a it's it's solid it's
it's got a lot of thrash stuff going on it's
got a lot of thrash stuff going on it's got some heavy metal stuff going on so
got some heavy metal stuff going on so they blended both together pretty good
they blended both together pretty good and road runner thought it was pretty
and road runner thought it was pretty good you know because they put it on
good you know because they put it on it's it's a pretty good uh pretty cool
it's it's a pretty good uh pretty cool pretty cool stuff but again just a
pretty cool stuff but again just a record and a release and a bay that
record and a release and a bay that doesn't get talked about a lot and
doesn't get talked about a lot and it's kind of one of those lost gems
it's kind of one of those lost gems forever
forever in the annals of heavy metals so
in the annals of heavy metals so yeah check out spartan warrior yeah
yeah check out spartan warrior yeah that's a good pick and it's a it's a new
that's a good pick and it's a it's a new wave of british heavy metal band that's
wave of british heavy metal band that's starting to move out of the new wave of
starting to move out of the new wave of british heavy metal
british heavy metal they really moved out of it because they
they really moved out of it because they got some super thrashy influence on that
got some super thrashy influence on that record so they really started that they
record so they really started that they they got super thrash at least to me i
they got super thrash at least to me i heard a lot of trashy vibe to it so it's
heard a lot of trashy vibe to it so it's um yeah yeah you see you really yeah you
um yeah yeah you see you really yeah you see those those british bands you know
see those those british bands you know leaving that you know the new wave of
leaving that you know the new wave of british heavy metal formula behind and
british heavy metal formula behind and that's a good example
that's a good example of that yeah cool man they did i think
of that yeah cool man they did i think they did a second album but i can't
they did a second album but i can't remember the name of it why did that why
remember the name of it why did that why did new wave of british heavy metal like
did new wave of british heavy metal like just start to
just start to like die in 1984
like die in 1984 because things start getting heavier
because things start getting heavier some things were getting heavier a lot
some things were getting heavier a lot of folks have mentioned you know that
of folks have mentioned you know that the uh the british music press you know
the uh the british music press you know uh had completely lost interest and so
uh had completely lost interest and so as
as metal things that were coming out then
metal things that were coming out then were
were getting you the big thumbs down all of a
getting you the big thumbs down all of a sudden and they were kind of you know
sudden and they were kind of you know starting to focus on other you know
starting to focus on other you know movements and styles so that uh
movements and styles so that uh you know they
you know they you know they lost a lot of you know the
you know they lost a lot of you know the support and the music press wasn't there
support and the music press wasn't there and i guess a lot of those bands you
and i guess a lot of those bands you know by that point
know by that point you know if you'd been one of the first
you know if you'd been one of the first bands on the scene you'd already been at
bands on the scene you'd already been at it you know four years or so you've done
it you know four years or so you've done your album you've done a couple of
your album you've done a couple of singles there were now a hundred bands
singles there were now a hundred bands just like you um yeah it's probably
just like you um yeah it's probably about the point where a lot of bands
about the point where a lot of bands were hitting that age where it's just
were hitting that age where it's just like okay
like okay it's probably time to
it's probably time to you know grow up and get a job and you
you know grow up and get a job and you know take care of the
know take care of the take care of the family i'm not 18
take care of the family i'm not 18 anymore i'm 22
anymore i'm 22 which was a big difference back then uh
which was a big difference back then uh more so than it is today for folks
more so than it is today for folks you know what i'm trying to do i'm
you know what i'm trying to do i'm trying to get some of those uh some of
trying to get some of those uh some of my some of our friends that run youtube
my some of our friends that run youtube channels out of england trying to get
channels out of england trying to get them to embrace that
them to embrace that new wave of british death metal with all
new wave of british death metal with all these english death metal bands that are
these english death metal bands that are coming out and they should they should
coming out and they should they should re-embrace that terminology and use it
re-embrace that terminology and use it as a phase anyway that's my opinion but
as a phase anyway that's my opinion but yeah i've seen that i've seen that
yeah i've seen that i've seen that popping up in a couple of videos
popping up in a couple of videos that's worth two bits around here so
well yeah cool yeah but just you know a band that
band that doesn't get talked about a lot and i
doesn't get talked about a lot and i just i'm trying to show more obscure
just i'm trying to show more obscure stuff at this point because i think
stuff at this point because i think we're we've hit on a lot of the you know
we're we've hit on a lot of the you know the big well there's still a couple big
the big well there's still a couple big guys nobody's hitting on which there are

that's you know such a cool song and it really
really you know shows them you know being that
you know shows them you know being that you know really dirty
you know really dirty grungy grimy side of doom
grungy grimy side of doom you know do middle in the early 80s is
you know do middle in the early 80s is you know really you know few and far
you know really you know few and far between and the bands you know kind of
between and the bands you know kind of each did their own thing a little bit
each did their own thing a little bit you know you had candle masks you know
you know you had candle masks you know would get you know the sort of you know
would get you know the sort of you know big epic sound uh
big epic sound uh which finder general had you know a
which finder general had you know a little bit more of you know the
little bit more of you know the straightforward you know
straightforward you know uh 4-4 rock sound um and then yeah you
uh 4-4 rock sound um and then yeah you had saint vitus just making it sound
had saint vitus just making it sound really creepy and weird and just doing
really creepy and weird and just doing an excellent job of it
an excellent job of it so yeah definitely had st vitus in the

bonsai records pressing which has got a different cover than the us pressing
different cover than the us pressing which is a really bad color pencil i
which is a really bad color pencil i mean this is colored pencil too and then
mean this is colored pencil too and then they also have a third version of this
they also have a third version of this which is just the moon on it
which is just the moon on it but um you know the the best song on

that's the best cover this album ever had it's not i like those i like the one
had it's not i like those i like the one where they're overlooking the town even
where they're overlooking the town even though it's really terrible i like i
though it's really terrible i like i like it
like it uh they're fun for what they are but i
uh they're fun for what they are but i mean you know
mean you know if you're you're like a young metal band
if you're you're like a young metal band you're like you know trying to you know
you're like you know trying to you know prove your metal and get up there and
prove your metal and get up there and conquer the world with your music
conquer the world with your music and you go you got your record deal
and you go you got your record deal you're the hot [ __ ] in town and the
you're the hot [ __ ] in town and the artist proofs come back it's like this
artist proofs come back it's like this is what your album's going to look like
is what your album's going to look like guys
guys you you know they had to [ __ ] their
you you know they had to [ __ ] their pants when they saw that [ __ ]
pants when they saw that [ __ ] yeah like what is that what i don't know
yeah like what is that what i don't know i don't get the knight on bro what does
i don't get the knight on bro what does that mean first off what's brocking uh
that mean first off what's brocking uh brock i'm probably gonna butcher this i
brock i'm probably gonna butcher this i believe it's a mountain in germany
believe it's a mountain in germany that's associated with the walpurgis
that's associated with the walpurgis knight uh ceremonies and witchcraft
knight uh ceremonies and witchcraft paganism stuff so i'm pretty sure this
paganism stuff so i'm pretty sure this is supposed to be the witch standing up
is supposed to be the witch standing up on brocken
on brocken is the first problem
it's almost like what's that famous painting uh saturday in the park kind of
painting uh saturday in the park kind of thing like
thing like that famous like
that famous like i just love the expression on her faces
i just love the expression on her faces like hmm i'm being burned at the stake
like hmm i'm being burned at the stake yeah whatevs
yeah whatevs i wonder what tiffany and britney are
i wonder what tiffany and britney are doing this weekend at the mall hmm oh
doing this weekend at the mall hmm oh wait am i on fire
oh wendy said she's lots of records mentioned here i'll have to re-watch and
mentioned here i'll have to re-watch and take notes wow
take notes wow so he's taking notes tea time on broken
so he's taking notes tea time on broken brian yep there you go
brian yep there you go yeah wendy's mentioned a few other good
yeah wendy's mentioned a few other good ones that we have not mentioned tonight
ones that we have not mentioned tonight like somebody kept mentioning hammer's
like somebody kept mentioning hammer's rule and i do have that i didn't i
rule and i do have that i didn't i didn't realize that was 84.
didn't realize that was 84. well we covered a lot of ground and
well we covered a lot of ground and there's no way we're going to get it all
there's no way we're going to get it all because let's let's admit it there's you
because let's let's admit it there's you know
know granted back then in 84 there were less
granted back then in 84 there were less bands than there are today but um
bands than there are today but um there's still a [ __ ] ton of bands and a
there's still a [ __ ] ton of bands and a lot of new bands and the one thing about
lot of new bands and the one thing about the 84 a lot more bands had their own
the 84 a lot more bands had their own unique sound
unique sound would you agree that times have kind of
would you agree that times have kind of changed in that regard
my nature correction is yes at the same time
at the same time i do wonder if some of that's just a
i do wonder if some of that's just a product of us having heard so much over
product of us having heard so much over the years that through that you start to
the years that through that you start to you don't dive as deep into the bands as
you don't dive as deep into the bands as you used to and so you don't really pick
you used to and so you don't really pick up the nuances that give them their
up the nuances that give them their individuality the way you did when you
individuality the way you did when you were
were 16 and you played the same handful of
16 and you played the same handful of tapes for a month straight on your
tapes for a month straight on your walkman
walkman so i i'm always my gender reaction is to
so i i'm always my gender reaction is to agree but
agree but i always do wonder if
i always do wonder if if we were all you know 20 year olds you
if we were all you know 20 year olds you know
know listening to
listening to you know
you know ginger and
ginger and you know code orange and stuff if we
you know code orange and stuff if we wouldn't be so zeroed on how
wouldn't be so zeroed on how individualistic all those bands are and
individualistic all those bands are and how all this old stuff just sounded the
how all this old stuff just sounded the same to us i don't know true
same to us i don't know true true
true i remember uh
i remember uh back in the day a friend of mine was in
back in the day a friend of mine was in a band here in town
a band here in town he was big into in flames jester race
he was big into in flames jester race and a bunch of other stuff along those
and a bunch of other stuff along those lines and i was playing him
lines and i was playing him voivod killing technology
voivod killing technology he's like i don't know dude this [ __ ]
he's like i don't know dude this [ __ ] just kind of sounds like glam metal to
just kind of sounds like glam metal to me
me i'm like i just wanted to punch him in
i'm like i just wanted to punch him in the [ __ ] face repeatedly i'm like
the [ __ ] face repeatedly i'm like what the [ __ ] did you just say
