the Catholic Church teaches that we must
go to confession to be forgiven of
serious sins this means we have to feel
sorry for the things we did wrong
confess them out loud to a priest and do
the Penance he gives us do we really
have to go through with this what did
Jesus have to say about it in the
Bible after his death and Resurrection
Jesus said to his Apostles peace be with
you as the father has sent me so I send
you and when he had said this he
breathed on them and said to them
receive the Holy Spirit whose sins you
forgive are forgiven them and whose sins
you retain are retained he gave the
apostles whom he made the first priest
at the Last Supper the authority to
forgive sins in His Name by giving them
this sacred authority he inst instituted
the sacrament of penance and
reconciliation but the apostles wouldn't
be on Earth forever either so they
handed on this same power to their
successors the Bishops and to priests so
that people for all time can experience
God's forgiveness every week in your own
Parish Christ continues his work through
your priest as he hears confessions and
forgives sins in the person of Christ
Jesus gives priests many spiritual
Powers the power to B baptize to turn
Bread and Wine into his body and blood
to anoint the sick and to forgive sins
these are a few of what we called the
sacraments they are not only spiritual
invisible encounters with God they are
physical visible encounters with him
just as you can taste the Eucharist feel
water in baptism and smell the oil of
anointing you can hear the priests tell
you that you are
forgiven Jesus had a human nature and
just like us had a human body and soul
he knows we need physical encounters and
so he makes himself available to us in
the sacraments in the sacraments Jesus
comes to you but you must also come to
him confession is one way we Foster a
true intimate and human friendship with Jesus
Jesus
Christ God isn't just in heaven he is
here with us acting in the world many
ask why we must confess our sins to a
priest instead of going to God Direct IR
L but when you go to confession you are
going to God
directly remember how Jesus commanded
the apostles to forgive or retain sins
how could they have known which sins to
forgive and which to retain unless
people told them their
sins true Christ knows all our sins and
he even knows our hearts better than we
do but we still must vocalize our sorrow
for the sins we have committed it's like
when a a close friend offends you you
want him to say he is sorry and ask you
to forgive him in the same way you have
to ask God to forgive you so now that we
understand why Christ created the
sacrament of penance and Reconciliation
let's take a look at what happens in the [Music]

confessional before you confess your
sins you must examine your conscience
think about the sins you've committed
it's helpful to read through the Ten
Commandments have you put God first in everything
everything
have you shown love to your neighbor
make a list if it's helpful or if you
feel like you might forget
something when you enter the
confessional say bless me Father for I
have sinned and then tell the priest how
long it has been since your last
confession then tell him everything
you've done wrong you don't have to go
into a lot of detail but at least say
the kind of sin you committed and about
how many times you committed it when you
are finished say I am sorry for these
and all my sins
and then listen to any advice he gives
you the priest will then assign you a
Penance often this will be to recite a
prayer or to do something kind for
another person once you say your act of
contrition the priest will forgive you
of your sins in the person of Christ
thank the priest and then complete your
Penance as soon as you can Christ's
suffering and death was the ultimate
sacrifice for your sins that is why we
don't have to be ashamed or afraid of
confessing confessing our sins he has
already willingly paid the price for
them when you confess your sins in the
sacrament that ultimate sacrifice gets
worked into your soul when you do
Penance you join in Christ's suffering
in a small way to make amends for your
sins and become his disciple once more
but why even bother to understand why
it's so important we have to understand
the effects that sin has on our soul
when God created man and he created us
free he also gave us rules out of love
these Commandments are for our own
benefit and help us to live like the
Lord lives Adam and Eve use their free
will to rebel against God's command and
so often you and I do too often we feel
that rules tie us down but the truth is
that they don't God's rules free us it's
like sports if we discipline ourselves
we can run faster go farther and play better
better
on the other hand if you misuse your
freedom you lose control of your life by
taking drugs you become enslaved to
addiction or by spending recklessly with
a credit card you become enslaved to
debt you are responsible for your own
choices and when you choose not to
follow God's Commandments you become
enslaved to sin you can lose your
salvation through your own free choice
if you want want to become a better
person you have to discipline yourself
and follow God's rules only then will
you be happy freed from sin and on the
path to
Heaven confession strengthens your
understanding of right and wrong and it
helps you to constantly improve who you
are and how you act but more than that
it restores your friendship with God and
keeps you close to Christ God's mercy
never Fades he tells us that if you
repent of a sin and ask for his
forgiveness he will always give it to
you even if you keep confessing the same
sin over and
over God also gives you a special gift
when you go to confession Grace Grace is
God's own life his own strength and
power that helps you repel sinful
Tendencies but you have a role to play
as well you have to cooperate with Grace
you have to have every intention of
never committing that sin again God
wants you to be perfect and he will help
you achieve it so go to God in
confession be sorrowful for your sins
and try to keep from committing those
sins again you will rejoice as there is
rejoicing in heaven as Jesus frees you
from the burden of sin and you become
