0:13 [Music]
0:15 the Catholic Church teaches that we must
0:16 go to confession to be forgiven of
0:18 serious sins this means we have to feel
0:21 sorry for the things we did wrong
0:23 confess them out loud to a priest and do
0:25 the Penance he gives us do we really
0:28 have to go through with this what did
0:30 Jesus have to say about it in the
0:33 Bible after his death and Resurrection
0:36 Jesus said to his Apostles peace be with
0:39 you as the father has sent me so I send
0:41 you and when he had said this he
0:43 breathed on them and said to them
0:46 receive the Holy Spirit whose sins you
0:48 forgive are forgiven them and whose sins
0:51 you retain are retained he gave the
0:53 apostles whom he made the first priest
0:55 at the Last Supper the authority to
0:58 forgive sins in His Name by giving them
1:00 this sacred authority he inst instituted
1:02 the sacrament of penance and
1:04 reconciliation but the apostles wouldn't
1:06 be on Earth forever either so they
1:08 handed on this same power to their
1:11 successors the Bishops and to priests so
1:14 that people for all time can experience
1:16 God's forgiveness every week in your own
1:19 Parish Christ continues his work through
1:22 your priest as he hears confessions and
1:26 forgives sins in the person of Christ
1:28 Jesus gives priests many spiritual
1:31 Powers the power to B baptize to turn
1:33 Bread and Wine into his body and blood
1:36 to anoint the sick and to forgive sins
1:38 these are a few of what we called the
1:41 sacraments they are not only spiritual
1:43 invisible encounters with God they are
1:46 physical visible encounters with him
1:49 just as you can taste the Eucharist feel
1:52 water in baptism and smell the oil of
1:54 anointing you can hear the priests tell
1:56 you that you are
1:59 forgiven Jesus had a human nature and
2:02 just like us had a human body and soul
2:05 he knows we need physical encounters and
2:07 so he makes himself available to us in
2:10 the sacraments in the sacraments Jesus
2:12 comes to you but you must also come to
2:15 him confession is one way we Foster a
2:18 true intimate and human friendship with Jesus
2:19 Jesus
2:22 Christ God isn't just in heaven he is
2:25 here with us acting in the world many
2:27 ask why we must confess our sins to a
2:30 priest instead of going to God Direct IR
2:34 L but when you go to confession you are
2:36 going to God
2:38 directly remember how Jesus commanded
2:41 the apostles to forgive or retain sins
2:43 how could they have known which sins to
2:46 forgive and which to retain unless
2:48 people told them their
2:52 sins true Christ knows all our sins and
2:54 he even knows our hearts better than we
2:57 do but we still must vocalize our sorrow
2:59 for the sins we have committed it's like
3:01 when a a close friend offends you you
3:04 want him to say he is sorry and ask you
3:07 to forgive him in the same way you have
3:11 to ask God to forgive you so now that we
3:12 understand why Christ created the
3:14 sacrament of penance and Reconciliation
3:17 let's take a look at what happens in the [Music]
3:18 [Music]
3:20 confessional before you confess your
3:23 sins you must examine your conscience
3:25 think about the sins you've committed
3:26 it's helpful to read through the Ten
3:29 Commandments have you put God first in everything
3:30 everything
3:32 have you shown love to your neighbor
3:34 make a list if it's helpful or if you
3:36 feel like you might forget
3:38 something when you enter the
3:41 confessional say bless me Father for I
3:43 have sinned and then tell the priest how
3:45 long it has been since your last
3:47 confession then tell him everything
3:49 you've done wrong you don't have to go
3:51 into a lot of detail but at least say
3:53 the kind of sin you committed and about
3:55 how many times you committed it when you
3:58 are finished say I am sorry for these
4:00 and all my sins
4:02 and then listen to any advice he gives
4:05 you the priest will then assign you a
4:08 Penance often this will be to recite a
4:10 prayer or to do something kind for
4:13 another person once you say your act of
4:15 contrition the priest will forgive you
4:17 of your sins in the person of Christ
4:20 thank the priest and then complete your
4:22 Penance as soon as you can Christ's
4:24 suffering and death was the ultimate
4:27 sacrifice for your sins that is why we
4:29 don't have to be ashamed or afraid of
4:31 confessing confessing our sins he has
4:33 already willingly paid the price for
4:36 them when you confess your sins in the
4:38 sacrament that ultimate sacrifice gets
4:40 worked into your soul when you do
4:43 Penance you join in Christ's suffering
4:45 in a small way to make amends for your
4:48 sins and become his disciple once more
4:51 but why even bother to understand why
4:54 it's so important we have to understand
4:58 the effects that sin has on our soul
5:00 when God created man and he created us
5:04 free he also gave us rules out of love
5:05 these Commandments are for our own
5:07 benefit and help us to live like the
5:10 Lord lives Adam and Eve use their free
5:13 will to rebel against God's command and
5:16 so often you and I do too often we feel
5:19 that rules tie us down but the truth is
5:24 that they don't God's rules free us it's
5:26 like sports if we discipline ourselves
5:29 we can run faster go farther and play better
5:31 better
5:33 on the other hand if you misuse your
5:36 freedom you lose control of your life by
5:39 taking drugs you become enslaved to
5:41 addiction or by spending recklessly with
5:45 a credit card you become enslaved to
5:48 debt you are responsible for your own
5:50 choices and when you choose not to
5:53 follow God's Commandments you become
5:56 enslaved to sin you can lose your
5:59 salvation through your own free choice
6:00 if you want want to become a better
6:03 person you have to discipline yourself
6:06 and follow God's rules only then will
6:09 you be happy freed from sin and on the
6:10 path to
6:13 Heaven confession strengthens your
6:14 understanding of right and wrong and it
6:17 helps you to constantly improve who you
6:20 are and how you act but more than that
6:22 it restores your friendship with God and
6:26 keeps you close to Christ God's mercy
6:28 never Fades he tells us that if you
6:30 repent of a sin and ask for his
6:33 forgiveness he will always give it to
6:36 you even if you keep confessing the same
6:39 sin over and
6:42 over God also gives you a special gift
6:46 when you go to confession Grace Grace is
6:49 God's own life his own strength and
6:51 power that helps you repel sinful
6:54 Tendencies but you have a role to play
6:58 as well you have to cooperate with Grace
7:00 you have to have every intention of
7:03 never committing that sin again God
7:05 wants you to be perfect and he will help
7:08 you achieve it so go to God in
7:11 confession be sorrowful for your sins
7:13 and try to keep from committing those
7:16 sins again you will rejoice as there is
7:18 rejoicing in heaven as Jesus frees you
7:21 from the burden of sin and you become
