You have the feeling I belong even though
I only work here for three afternoons, it
's a warm bath for me. Some
even consider me a total favorite or something, right? Do
you want me? He really raised his fists in the air.
Yes, I get to work with Maria, so
I think that's really nice to
hear, yes, a form of coming home
again. Yes, that's what I actually think is
the added value, right? People have to belong
somewhere. It's good, it's good
for me, it's very good, it offers
work places to many people and also
to many volunteers, they dedicate
themselves daily to keep the shops running,
both in front of and behind the
scenes. Volunteers can
have very different reasons for supporting it for a
few hours a week.
I am, uh, 80 to 100 p.m.
physically incapacitated. I had to, uh,
reintegrate, but because, uh, physically I could
n't do that, I thought, okay, then
I'll do volunteer work, to
be honest, I didn't feel like
going there at all, really not. I
really thought, Well, and the first day
I was like, What, think, oh, what am I doing here? Man,
I shouldn't be here at all. are But
I think the second time I worked
there I immediately found it really fun
and enjoyable and I was just accepted
as a colleague and then I saw,
Okay, maybe I can make something of it after all,
and first in the clothing department and
later I went to the checkout
so, uh, and that's what I like
doing the most, so, uh, working with the people.
Yes, yes, I have enormous respect for
Maria, uh, Maria does indeed have quite a
few medical conditions, and yet
she was able to travel quite a distance every day, uh, and
she also walks quite a distance to get to her,
uh, work. She's
always positive, even when she's in pain, uh,
yes, for me that's, uh, very inspiring,
and for many of my colleagues as well. Yes,
I never really have any aversion to it. No, I
always look forward to
going there. I also like
seeing everyone again and stuff. So,
uh, yes, because you're equal to all your colleagues, in principle, right? Everyone is just the same, no one is different or, uh, lower or higher or anything. Everyone is equal, and that just makes it very nice and You feel appreciated and
also needed, to put it that way.
Jan also found a
place at Het Goed after his retirement, and I already knew the
Het Goed store in Hardewijk, and um, we
arrived there, and the first thing we
saw was a sign for volunteers.
So I said to the lady, that's fine.
Well, we always have an
introductory meeting, an
orientation meeting, um, in which someone
says, "Gosh, that sounds like fun," um, and
we certainly take that into account, um, right?
It's important for the other person that
they do something they like and that gives them
energy, and um, yes, for
us, it's very important that someone enjoys
such a place,
so yes, we certainly think about that,
and I also indicated then that, because
books are my great passion. I have to
say honestly that I, um, actually
for the books, that that
was my great wish, and there was also
a colossal bin with books that
all still had to be put on the shelf, um,
so I immediately fell into
luck, and um, I now work there three
afternoons a week,
um, and I spend them entirely on eh, about
the books, the
book management, I've worked, eh, for almost 40 years,
and at some point you
retire and then you end up
sitting at home, and eh, I understood one thing well
from friends and acquaintances
who had already experienced that. You should
n't stay stuck at home, eh, look, work
gives a certain structure to your
life, eh, not just a daily schedule,
but it also keeps you mentally
sharp. Look, if you, it's just the same.
I once, eh, tore the ligaments in my knee
in my leg, and then a cast is put
around it, and that comes off after six weeks, and
then you have a very thin leg
because you have
n't used that leg for six weeks, and that
actually happens to your brain as well. You just have to
keep going, right? So to
keep your brain sharp, but you're
also among people, and I think it's great
that when you go to the thrift store, that's
a cross-section of ordinary society.
You're dealing with highly educated
people with very specific interests,
also with regard to books, but you
also have, for example, people who have a
residence permit. We've had
asylum seekers, uh, all
sorts of people from all
backgrounds are very welcome
with us. We also have volunteers who, uh, well,
a lot younger and
who, uh, can't participate in
the regular, uh, work system, but who
still have a lot of talents and a
lot to offer. I'm now in my third year at
the good. I work in the
household department where I, uh, live
accessories, uh, price or pans or
crockery. I have PTSD, and that makes it
really difficult for me to
have a regular job from 9 to 5.
Sosa once took the step to
become a volunteer herself. Things were
n't going so well at home, and,
uh, yeah, that actually made me a bit
stuck, so I went there, uh,
actually to shop, and I
spoke to Marion, like, "Hey,
please, because it's either the
asylum or I'll come and visit
you for a few hours a week, uh,
hobble around," and then she said, "Well, let's
do the latter." I have a lot of
fun at the good, of course, but I
also notice that when I come home, you're satisfied. Are
you thinking, I'm home,
yes, that I mean to
society, that's just
important that you keep
seeing people. I easily become
isolated, then I don't need anyone
around me, or because I have to go
outside now. Yes, my health remains
good. You are seen. You are heard, uh,
you are not a number. It's always "
Good morning," when you leave, you are
thanked for coming to help.
Yes, we really need volunteers
to do the work that needs to be done in a thrift store, uh,
can happen.
In addition, they are of great added
value because of their, uh, well, their
different backgrounds, their, uh, yes,
their entire contribution is very important to us,
yes, we are very happy with them.
I am definitely on the way up. Yes, I
am really
rediscovering myself and seeing what my
passions are, and that just depends on
the good. Well, just a paid
position, yes, I would be very happy with that.
I don't have to become a director
or anything, but uh, a paid position, I do like it
very much. I am now 76. I hope that I can
still have a few years. ahead of me and
as long as I can walk I'll go to the
thrift store I'll keep working there Yes, of course
Yes, I think this is fine and eh I'll stay
as long as I can I'll just keep
standing behind the greenhouses Yes who
knows who knows maybe it's in the cards maybe
not but then I'll still keep doing
volunteer work there until I'm 80
