welcome to back to the Bible radio
featuring best-selling author an
internationally known Bible teacher
Warren where's being above all taking
the shield of faith with which ye shall
be able to quench all the fiery darts of
the wicked one the shield that the Roman
soldier carried was a large shield
almost like a door perhaps 2 feet by 4
feet it was made of wood it was covered
with cloth and leather and sometimes the
soldier dipped it in water so that the
fire tipped arrows would be extinguished
when they struck the shield now the
shield represents the believers faith
he's talking here about that practical
everyday faith that says I am trusting
God for victory today I'm not trusting
myself I'm not trusting my experience
I'm not trusting my knowledge I'm
trusting God to give me the victory
today first John 5:4 and this is the
victory that overcomes the world even
our faith above all taking the shield of
faith with which you shall be able to
quench all the fiery darts of the wicked
one now these fiery darts come suddenly
they come swiftly they come silently
there's no announced warning and as they
land as they strike there is pain there
is the spreading of the fire and before
you know it there is a conflagration and
there is destruction
what are these fiery darts well I think
there are many different kinds of darts
that Satan throws at us Martin Luther to
change the image used to say I cannot
keep the birds from flying around my
head but I can keep them from making a
nest in my hair
we've got to be very careful not to
allow these fiery darts to penetrate and
to set fire and to do damage I think
number 1 Satan likes to throw the fiery
darts of fear
people get afraid Jesus said why are you
afraid where is your faith faith and
fear do not live in the same heart and
you're going through the day and all of
a sudden you become afraid there's some
kind of a threat to you it might be
something somebody said it might be a
change in circumstances a letter that
you read a notice you hear on radio or
television it might be a telephone call
I don't know
but suddenly fear comes into your life
and that fear spreads like fire it
begins to destroy your faith now you
don't want it that way you can always
tell the fiery darts of the wicked one
from the inward temptations of our own
nature because suddenly they hit and
they hit without warning and they start
to spread and you don't want them to be
there there is a resistance on your part
you say well where did that come from
that's not a part of my usual thinking
he likes to throw the fiery darts of
fear or doubt doubts about God does God
really know what he's doing does God
understand what my problems are or about
the Bible it's amazing how people can
read their Bible all of their lives and
then at a certain point say you know I
don't believe that
now that's Satan at work his first
temptation yay hath God said ye shall
not eat of every tree of the garden he
throws doubts at us doubts about the
Bible doubts about other people we get
skeptical about other folks in the
church does she really like me
is he really qualified to be serving the
Lord what did he really mean by that
statement in the sermon you see we get
these doubts about other people and
Satan likes to fan these fires of doubt
and before long they grow and they
destroy your faith sometimes we have
doubts about ourselves now we should not
be overly confident in ourselves that
sin that's pride but we ought to be very
very careful that we don't start to
having doubts about ourselves
I really born again do I really know the
Lord is my Savior should I really be
claiming to be a Christian that's good
to examine your own heart search me O
God and know my heart try me and know my
thoughts but it's a dangerous thing to
start Fanning these fires from the darts
the fiery darts of doubt or sometimes
these fiery darts are words they could
be filthy words that come to your mind
slanderous words words of criticism
words of hatred Satan likes to to throw
the darts at our mind and we start to
think things we don't really want to
thank or sometimes he throws these darts
at our will and we suddenly decide we're
going to do something that we know we
should not do sometimes he throws them
at the heart the emotions and we we get
all worked up emotionally sometimes he
throws the darts at the conscience and
we start feeling very dirty down inside
he attacks us he accuses us sometimes he
uses the fiery darts of confusion God is
not the author of confusion
first Corinthians 14:33 when you find
yourself during the day getting confused
in your thinking or your emotions
confused in your living stop right there
and say somehow a fiery dart got past
the shield of faith now what does the
shield do number one it stops the darts
and number two it puts them out it stops
them so they don't do damage it puts
them out so the damage doesn't spread
you see faith is the shield faith in
what faith in God God is our shield God
is all we need our faith is not in
ourselves our faith is not in the
doctrines that we believe our faith is
in God
have faith in God said the Lord Jesus
God is our shield our faith is in him
our faith is not only in God's person
but in God's promises there has not
failed one word of all his good promise
we also have faith in God's providence
we believe that all things are working
together for
good to them that love God that doesn't
mean we go out and sin and God works it
out no it means that no matter what kind
of a battle we may be in God is in control
control
faith protects the soldier the shield of
faith protects the Christian soldier
secondly the shield of faith also
protects the armor notice what it says
above all taking the shield of faith in
addition to all don't leave the shield
you say well I'm wearing the helmet of
salvation that'll protect me I'm wearing
the breastplate of righteousness I have
on the girdle of truth and I have my
sword that's all I need all no you know
he says above all in addition to all you
take the shield of faith because the
other parts of the armor don't function
apart from faith when you put on the
girdle of truth integrity you have faith
in the God of truth you say today I am
going to do what is right and what is
true not what is safe not what is
popular not what may make me successful
I'm going to do what is right you're
having faith in truth you put on the
breastplate of righteousness you have
faith that your God is a righteous God a
holy God adjust God and that his
righteousness will keep you you put on
the shoes of peace you have faith in the
gospel the Lord Jesus Christ died he was
buried he arose again he was seen by
witnesses you believed the message of
the gospel that Christ died for our sins
the helmet of salvation the sword of the
Spirit prayer all of these things depend
on faith without faith it's impossible
to please God and faith is the important
thing in the Christian life that's why
Satan attacks your faith that's why he
tries to keep you from the Word of God
that's why he wants you to worry about
all of these things that are happening
all the changes going on around you that
you don't understand he wants you to get can
can
fuzed he wants you to lose your
confidence in God the armor is protected
by the shield of faith and if you want
to protect your integrity you better
have faith you want to protect the shoes
of peace you'd better have faith you
want to protect the sword of the Spirit
you'd better have faith above all taking
the shield of faith with which you shall
be able to quench all the fiery darts of
the wicked I like that word all above
all you're able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked one learn today that
there is no tactic there is no piece of
strategy that Satan can throw at you
that God cannot equip you to defeat you
are on the winning side not only does
the shield of faith protect the soldier
and protect the armor but it also unites
the soldiers in the army you see the
edges of these big shields were beveled
in such a way that they could lock
together a row of Roman soldiers would
put their shields together and march
like a solid wall and you couldn't
penetrate that wall you see faith means
you and I love each other and we walk
together and we stand together we fight
together against the enemy we do not
fight each other
we need that today if only all the
soldiers could pray together and trust
God together and march together all what
we could accomplish in the work of the
Lord but we get selfish we get
individualistic we get proud and we
don't stand and work together
Deuteronomy 33 29 happy art Thou O
Israel who is like unto thee o people
saved by the Lord the shield of thy help
and who is the sword of thy excellency
and thine enemies shall be found liars on
on
to thee and thou shall tread upon their
high places
oh what a privileged people we are to be
able to wear the whole armour of God and
take the helmet of salvation this is
commanded in Ephesians 6:17 the Roman
soldier had a bronze helmet with a
leather strap on it and he carried this
helmet over his shoulder or on his
girdle until he needed to put it on for
the battle now the emphasis here is on
the mind
protecting your mind from the attacks of
the enemy you see salvation involves
your mind in order to be saved a person
has to repent Paul preached repentance
toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ John the Baptist came and said
repent for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand our Lord Jesus Christ preached
repentance what is repentance a change
of mind not regret where we look back
and we're sorry about something that
happened usually we're sorry that we got
caught not regret and not just pity for
ourselves but sincere repentance we
change our minds about our sins and
about what God has to say about them now
that involves the mind the Christian
life begins with repentance and faith
the Christian life continues and grows
as you cultivate your knowledge of the
Word of God but grow in grace and in the
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ 2nd Peter 3:18 a person who does
not use his mind is not going to grow
God wants us to have a spiritual mind he
wants us to have the mind of the Lord
Jesus Christ he wants that our minds
shall be transformed be transformed by
the renewing of your mind
and so the Christian life begins with a
change of mind repentance and faith in
Christ it grows as we have a transformed
and we are not going to have victory in
the Christian life unless we have an
understanding of the Word of God how
Satan works and how God gives us the
victory don't ignore the helmet of
salvation some Saints do not have
victory in their lives because they
don't have the right mindset they have
not put on by faith the helmet of
salvation they are not thinking victory
they are not thinking like Christians to
put on the helmet of salvation means to
think like a Christian to think God's
thoughts after him it means that God
communicates his thoughts to us through
his word and by His Holy Spirit if you
are wearing the helmet of salvation you
will not have the wrong kind of mind the
wrong kind of attitude for example if
you're wearing the helmet of salvation
you'll not have a divided mind no
soldier is ever going to win the battle
with a divided mind James 1:8 tells us a
double minded man is unstable in all his
ways the Roman soldier wore those
hobnails shoes now if you have hobnails
shoes you ought to have stability in
your stand and in your walk but if you
have a divided mind you're going to be
unstable what good are these shoes of
the gospel of peace if our mind is
divided you cannot take a half-hearted
approach to the Christian life we need a
mindset of victory now what kind of a
mindset is this Peter describes it for
us in 1st Peter chapter 4 verse 1 for as
much then as Christ hath suffered for us
in the flesh arm yourselves likewise
with the same mind your mind is a weapon
in the battle nice that you arm yourself
with the same attitude toward sin and
suffering that Jesus had have the
mindset of victory and this is not a
divided mind
I'm thinking of Joshua and Caleb there
in numbers chapter 13 the only two spies
who said we can go in and conquer the
land the other 10 spies had divided
Minds they said no we can't go in it's
impossible for us to conquer those
Giants and scale those walls and destroy
those cities Joshua and Caleb had armed
themselves with the right mind they did
not have a divided mind you see a
divided mind leads to a deceived mind if
we do not have a single hearted devotion
to the Lord Jesus Christ Satan will be
able to deceive our minds now how did
Satan deceive the mind of Eve Genesis
chapter 3 gives us the answer to that
question he took three very simple steps
in deceiving her first he questioned
God's Word Genesis 3:1 and he the
serpent said unto the woman yea hath God
said ye shall not eat of every tree of
the garden he questions God's Word and
then in verse 4 he denies God's Word and
the serpent said unto the woman ye shall
not surely die and then in verse 5 he
substitutes his own lie for God doth
know that in the day ye eat thereof then
your eyes shall be opened and ye shall
be as God knowing good and evil
that's what Satan always wanted I will
be like the Most High he said in Isaiah
chapter 14 he questions God's Word he
denies God's Word and then he
substitutes his own lie this is how
Satan deceives us that's why it's so
important to study the Word of God it's
good to study things like how to raise
your children or or how to handle your
money or how to do these other things
but at the foundation of all of this is
the truth of the word of God and the
better you know the Word of God the
better you'll be able to raise your
family the better you'll be able to
handle your business affairs a deceive
mind Satan loves to deceive us well if
you're wearing the helmet of salvation
you will not have a divided mind or a
deceived mind or a doubtful mind in Luke
12 29 the Lord Jesus warns us be not of
a doubtful mind don't let your mind be
filled with doubts now this is the only
place in the New Testament where this
Greek word is used and it's the greek
word that gives us our english word

meteor neither be e of doubtful mine
what's a meteor well the word means to
be raised on high to be in midair to
live in suspense to hover a lot of
christians have minds that are living in
suspense they're hovering they never
settle down on anything there they're
always up in the air about something a
doubtful mind now why should we be of
doubtful mind God provides for us God
protects us
oh how Satan loves for us to have a
doubtful mind because if we have a
doubtful mind we won't claim God's
promises if we don't claim God's
promises we can't enjoy God's power if
we don't enjoy God's power we can't
share in his victory Satan wants us to
have a divided mind a deceived mind a
doubtful mind and a discouraged mind in
1st Thessalonians 5 8 Paul writes about
this helmet but he describes it a little differently
differently
1st Thessalonians 5 8 but let us who are
of the day be sober putting on the
breastplate of faith and love and for a
helmet the hope of salvation I like that
the the helmet of salvation is the
helmet of the hope of salvation when a
soldier loses his hope he loses the
battle if he looks around and says well
we cannot possibly win he's done for it
you see defeat is on the inside not the outside
outside
the successful soldier is the one who
never capitulates down inside within his
heart he is saying I know that God is
going to see me through God controls the
future hope in the Christian life is not
hope so it's confidence in God's promise
confidence in God's purposes what is it
that creates discouragement in the
Christian battle well we forget the
Blessed hope we forget that our great
captain of salvation is coming to save
us and to take us to glory we start
walking by sight and not by faith we
look around and see all the casualties
and all the chaos we say well there's no
sense going any further and we quit or
we give in to our feelings oh how many
Christians do that they just give in to
their feelings I don't feel like praying
today I don't feel like reading God's
Word that's when you need to pray and
read God's Word I don't feel like going
to church that's when you need to be
with God's people we give in to our
feelings or we listen to what other
people have to say and before long we
get a discouraged mind and you watch
that soldier if he takes off the helmet
of salvation he cannot lift his head
high rather his head drops in
discouragement and defeat God is the one
who lifts up our heads and he does it by
putting on our heads the helmet of
salvation if we are wearing the helmet
of salvation then we can take our stand
then Satan will not be able to rob us of
the inheritance that we have in the Lord
Jesus Christ remember the purpose of
this armor is not that we might invade
Satan's territory we do that but the
purpose of this armor is that we might
hold on to the territory Jesus has
already gained for us may God help us to
put on the helmet of salvation don't
have a divided mind make up your mind
you're going to fight the battle to the
very end don't have a deceived mind
leave God's truth don't have a doubtful
mind always up in the air living in
suspense don't have a discouraged mind
have the mind of the Lord Jesus Christ a
transformed mind and one day you will
trade in your helmet for a crown thanks
