0:07 so now let's talk about inclusion I have
0:08 to say when I was doing my research this
0:10 part blew my mind so I want to share
0:12 with you some things about inclusion and
0:14 how it shows up in the brain because
0:16 it's actually pretty surprising so our
0:18 brains actually track three aspects here
0:21 the first is social status friendship
0:24 networks and also marginalization and
0:26 this is again you know as I mentioned
0:28 before because our chances of survival
0:31 are greater if we're part of a group so
0:33 parts of our brain are actually tracking
0:36 where we are in in a group and in fact
0:37 it's the same part of your brain that
0:40 does math for ranking we're kind of
0:41 keeping a tally of where we are in the
0:43 group at all times so we're very
0:44 sensitive when we're starting to move to
0:47 the edge of a group and starting to be
0:49 marginalized now what was really
0:50 fascinating is that the researchers
0:53 found that exclusion lights up the exact
0:57 same part of the brain as physical pain
0:59 so when we break our arm we feel the
1:00 pain of that and if we're excluded from
1:03 the group the same part of the brain
1:05 feels that it shows up in the same way
1:07 in fact researchers were wondering if
1:09 pain medications would also help with
1:12 exclusion and in fact it does so if you
1:14 think about pain medications when you
1:15 let's say you break your arm and you
1:18 take a pain med it doesn't actually heal
1:20 the arm it just disconnects the sense of
1:22 pain you feel in your brain and when the
1:24 chemical wears off you feel the pain
1:26 again and then you can take another pill
1:28 and what I think is happening is people
1:30 are going on opioids for leg legitimate
1:32 injuries but while they're there they
1:34 get this relief from the social pain
1:37 they feel in their life they get a break
1:39 from it and I think that's why so many
1:40 people have a hard time coming off the
1:42 opioids even though the physical injury
1:44 is healed it's because they don't know
1:47 how to transition away from that relief
1:49 from the social pain and this is what's
1:51 driving the opioid addiction that we see
1:52 all around the world and certainly in
1:55 the United States let's look at symptoms
1:57 of long-term
1:59 exclusion people are less able to
2:02 perform on difficult tasks there's poor
2:06 impulse control poor Sleep Quality
2:08 weakened immune systems literally
2:11 getting sick more feeling sadness
2:14 anxiety depression helplessness and
2:16 unworthiness and this of course leads to
2:18 a likelihood of self-medicating with
2:20 alcohol and drugs and a substance abuse
2:24 and addiction and finally more prone to
2:26 suicide in fact Dr Kipling Williams at
2:29 Purdue University said long-term ostracism
2:30 ostracism
2:33 seems to be very devastating people
2:35 finally give up now you may think that
2:37 this is a minor issue but another study
2:39 found that 61% of employees feel
2:42 pressured to cover some aspect of their
2:44 identity at work meaning they're not
2:45 able to come in and be their full selves
2:47 that they feel like they might be
2:49 excluded if they showed up as they
2:52 really are it's 83% for lesbian gay
2:56 bisexual workers it's 79% for black or
3:00 African-American workers 66% for women
3:04 63% for Cho Hispanic Latino workers and
3:06 even heterosexual white men
3:09 45% who are often hiding aspects of
3:11 themselves such as disabilities
3:14 addiction childhood abuse or mental
3:17 illness so what does it mean to teams if
3:20 a good portion of the team is not able
3:22 to show up as they really are what we
3:26 know is that belonging is how we matter
3:27 right it's it's something that we all
3:29 crave and hunger for it's a biological
3:31 imperative and it enhances the meaning
3:34 of life and so belonging is what we want
3:36 everyone to feel and that's defined as
3:38 the feeling of being part of something
3:40 mattering to others how do we get to
3:43 belonging through inclusion which is
3:45 intentional acts designed to help people
3:47 feel part of something so this is why
3:49 diversity and inclusion training is so
3:51 important to do in the workplace because
3:54 inclusion is how we create that very
3:56 important sense of belonging so I want
3:58 you to think about how this plays out in
4:00 your organization
4:02 and next we're going to talk about the
