Hi everyone, I am Reja and Pñena and in
this video I'll be sharing about the
fort San Pedro. The oldest triangle fort
in the Philippines built in Spanish era
in Baranga San Cebu City near Plaza de
Patentia. The Fort San Pedro story
begins on May 8, 1565 when the Spanish
concessor Mikuel Lope is still broke
ground for its construction just 11 days
after arriving Cebu. The fort was
initially a modest wooden palacet built
hustily to protect the fledgling Spanish
settlements from local resistance and
maritime threats. By the early 17th
century, it was replaced with a more
durable stone constructed from coral
stone sourced from Cebu's coastal
waters. The Fort San Pedro is triangular
in shape and it has two sides facing the
sea and the third side facing the land.
And those two sides were safeguarded
with cannons and the front with strong
fence made with wood. And it has three
bastions and they are named La
Conception, the Ignasha de Lyola and San
Miguel. The fort and cannons were
settled in their locations and most of
them are still there today.
The fort was named after St. Peter or
San Pedro in Spanish because Legospish
also carried the same name and the
Spaniards believe that the saint
protected their voyages and missions. So
naming the fort after a saint symbolized
their fate and hope for divine
protection over their colony and their
soldiers in Cebu. Now moving to its
significance. The Fort San Pedro before
serves as military fortress guarding
Cebu's cost from prior trades and
uprising. Inside its coral stone walls,
the Spanish soldiers stored weapons,
ammunition, and supplies to defend their
settlements. Later, it was reused by the
Americans as a barracks and by the
Japanese as a prison camp during World
War II. The fort witnessed centuries of
war, colonization, and change, making it
one of Cebu's oldest surviving
structures. And today, the Fort San
Pedro has taken on completely new
meaning. Instead of soldiers and
cannons, it now houses a museum, garden,
and historical exhibit managed by the
Cebu city government. It stand as a
peaceful reminder of Cebu's journey from
colonization to independence. The site
now promotes education, tourism, and
heritage preservation, serving as a
learning space for students and
visitors. Its transformation from
Fortress of War into a center of culture
shows how Cebu continues to value its
past while moving towards progress.
Fort San Pedro stand as a quiet yet
enduring witness to the Philippines
complex. As the oldest and smallest
triangle fort of the country, this
crablstone structure has withstood
centuries of change from Spanish
colonization to Filipino resilience
serving as a tangible link to the
nation's past. Over time, it has changed
hands and purposes. A Spanish fortress,
archery base, an American barracks, and
even a Japanese garrison during World
War II. More than a relic, Fort San
Pedro is a testament to endurance
through war, revolution, and time
itself. It's stand not just as a
monument to Spain's colonial footprint,
but as a mirror reflecting Cebu's
resilience and the layers of history
that continue to shape it. Fort San
Pedro stands not just as a fort, but a
symbol of Cebu's resilience and
identity. And that concludes my
presentation about Fort San Pedro, the
oldest triangle fort in the Philippines.
I hope you learned something new. Thank
you for watching and may we continue to
value and preserve our historical
landmarks that reminds us of our
resilience and identity as Filipino.
