0:03 now we turn to Jonah CH
0:06 4 if you and I were writing the Book of
0:09 Jonah there wouldn't be any chapter
0:12 4 which shows how little we know about
0:15 the ways of God after all chapter 3
0:17 records Jonah's
0:20 success a million people plus their animals
0:21 animals
0:23 repented that's all the church is
0:26 concerned about today is Success some
0:28 good statistics to
0:31 report and no no that we've gone back to
0:33 the little phrase
0:36 but now we ran up against this in
0:39 chapter 1 God told Jonah to arise and go
0:41 verse three but
0:43 Jonah and then in verse four but the
0:45 Lord you butt up against the Lord and
0:47 he'll butt up against
0:50 you chapter 2 he chastens Jonah chapter
0:54 3 Jonah obeys and we go from but Jonah
0:57 in Chapter 2 then Jonah chapter 3 so
0:59 Jonah but now we're back to the butt again
1:04 but it displeased Jonah exceedingly and
1:07 he was very
1:09 angry and he prayed unto the Lord and
1:12 said I pray thee Oh Lord was not this my
1:14 saying when I was yet in my
1:17 country therefore I fled before unto
1:19 tares for I knew that thou art a
1:23 gracious God and merciful slow to
1:27 anger of great kindness and repentance
1:29 thee of the evil therefore now oh Lord
1:32 take I be beseech theee my life from me
1:34 now if he hadn't added that from me and
1:36 he'd meant it spiritually he would have
1:39 gotten someplace take oh Lord my
1:42 life but he wanted to die it is better
1:44 for me to die than to
1:47 live then said the Lord doest thou well
1:48 to be
1:51 angry so Jonah went out of the city and
1:53 sat on the east side of the city and
1:56 there made a booth for himself and sat
1:59 under it in the shadow till he might see
2:01 what would be come of the
2:04 city hoping of course that God would
2:06 change his mind and destroy the enemy
2:09 and the Lord God prepared a
2:12 gourd and made it to come up over Jonah
2:15 this is a plant with large leaves that
2:18 look like the palm of your hand that it
2:20 might be a shadow over his head to
2:23 deliver him from his grief so Jonah was
2:28 exceedingly glad of the gourd but
2:30 God prepared
2:33 worm when the morning Rose the next day
2:36 and it smoke the gourd that it withered
2:39 and it came to pass when the sun did
2:44 rise that God prepared a vehement East
2:47 Wind and the Sun Beat upon the head of
2:50 Jonah that he fainted and wished himself
2:53 to die and said it is better for me to
2:55 die than to
2:58 live and God said to Jonah doest thou
3:00 well to be angry for the G G and he said
3:04 I do well to be angry even unto
3:07 death then said the
3:11 Lord thou Hast had pity on the gourd for
3:14 which thou Hast not labored neither mest
3:16 It Grow which came up in a night and
3:19 perished in a night and should not I
3:23 spare Nineveh that great City in which
3:26 are more than six score, persons that
3:28 cannot discern between their right hand
3:31 and their left hand that means little
3:34 children and also much
3:36 cattle and would you believe there is no verse
3:38 verse
3:41 12 it's not dropped out of any
3:43 manuscript it never was in any
3:47 manuscripts you know why you and I have
3:52 12 Jonah chter
3:56 4 finishes the book and shows us that
3:58 God is more concerned about the worker
4:01 than he is the work
4:04 God didn't say well this is marvelous
4:07 Nineveh has repented there's no judgment
4:09 Jonah is sitting there ping but that's
4:11 all right he'll get over it no no God
4:12 doesn't do
4:15 that after all Jonah was God's
4:18 missionary have you ever sat on a
4:21 committee interviewing a missionary
4:23 candidate I have it's interesting
4:25 interesting
4:27 difficult what I'd like to do tonight is
4:30 consider Jonah as a missionary camp
4:32 candidate all that we know about the
4:36 Book of Jonah now and I want to call
4:38 three witnesses to our committee we're
4:40 all going to become a committee of the whole
4:41 whole
4:43 tonight I want to call first of all the
4:45 witness of his
4:47 credentials now if you're going to go to
4:48 be a missionary you've got to have
4:50 certain credentials they they make you
4:52 fill out certain forms and they ask you
4:54 a lot of questions so first we're going
4:56 to talk about his credentials then the
4:59 witness of his companions I want to go
5:00 through this book and call out the
5:02 people who were with Jonah and see what they
5:03 they
5:05 know and then last of all and most
5:09 important the witness of his Lord his
5:12 creator his savior see what God has to
5:14 say about it let's begin now with the
5:16 witness of his credentials Jonah is now
5:18 seated before us the committee is
5:20 meeting and we're going to ask him the
5:22 questions that are asked just about
5:25 every missionary candidate Jonah number
5:28 one has God called you do you feel a
5:31 call of God oh yeah twice
5:33 twice
5:35 twice you really feel you're called of
5:37 God yes the word of the Lord came to me
5:40 saying arise go to Nineveh yes I've been
5:42 called God's called you yes because you
5:43 don't want to do anything without God calling
5:46 calling
5:51 you question number two Jonah is your theology
5:53 theology
5:56 Evangelical are you Orthodox in your
5:59 theology oh of course I am I believe in
6:02 the god God of Israel I believe in God
6:05 who is gracious and merciful and slow to
6:07 anger and of great kindness a God who
6:10 repents of evil I believe that salvation
6:15 Lord he said that you know back in chapter
6:21 2:9 all right you have a call from God
6:24 and your theology is
6:26 evangelical here's a third question
6:28 Jonah do you
6:30 pray do I
6:34 pray oh I have prayed in strange
6:38 places does God answer your prayers oh
6:41 does he answer my prayers let me tell
6:44 you about the miracle that I went
6:47 through now this story may sound fishy
6:50 to you but here is what
6:52 happened and so the committee would look
6:54 at each other and say this is good
6:56 here's a man who when he
7:00 prays god works
7:02 now there's always somebody on every
7:03 committee who's concerned about the Deeper
7:06 Deeper
7:09 Life and so the some committee
7:12 memb says to
7:23 life nobody's gone deeper than I've
7:26 gone I've been down to the bottoms of the
7:27 the
7:30 mountains I know what it's like like to
7:34 die and to be raised from the dead may
7:35 you don't have to talk to me about
7:37 walking in newness of life I died and I
7:40 was raised I know the Deeper Life
7:41 wonderful we don't want any missionaries
7:44 who don't know the Deeper
7:47 Life well here's another question they
7:50 always ask you've done some preaching
7:52 Jonah does your preaching bring results
7:54 oh sure haven't you
7:57 heard I went and preached to a
8:01 city there were 20,000 children in it
8:03 and there were a lot of parents and
8:05 uncles and aunts nearly a million people
8:08 and the whole city repented the whole
8:11 the whole city even the animals
8:12 animals
8:14 remarkable oh yes I've had results from
8:16 my preaching
8:19 yes now there's always one like this on the
8:21 the
8:24 committee Jonah can you quote
8:27 scripture you believe in Bible memory
8:29 work oh yes I can quote the Psalms by
8:37 James back in Chapter 2 you've got Jonah
8:40 quoting scripture by the yard yes I I I
8:43 believe in scripture I quote scripture
8:46 in fact here in Chapter 4: 2 when he has
8:47 this statement I know thou art a
8:49 gracious God and merciful and so forth
8:52 he's quoting from from two experiences
8:55 in moses' life Exodus 34 and numbers
8:57 chap 14 on those two occasions when
9:00 Israel sins so Grievous ly and Moses had
9:02 to go up on the Mountaintop and
9:04 intercede these are the words that Moses
9:06 used oh I can quote the Psalms I can
9:09 quote from the law that's marvelous we
9:10 don't want any any missionaries who
9:12 can't quote
9:14 scripture Jan have you got any courage
9:16 it takes courage to be a missionary oh
9:18 I've got courage I was willing for those
9:22 people to throw me in the water to save
9:24 them I've got courage don't talk to me
9:26 about courage I have got enough
9:28 courage now Jan if you'll leave the room
9:30 we want to discuss this and so Jonah
9:32 leaves the room and you know what the
9:34 result would be they would look at these
9:36 credentials and they would say you know
9:38 this is this is the finest missionary
9:40 candidate we have
9:44 ever interrogated he's called of God
9:46 he's theologically sound there's no
9:50 liberalism he gets answers to prayer he
9:53 knows what it is to die to
9:56 self his preaching has brought results
9:58 he can quote scripture and he's a
10:03 courageous man we had better sign him up
10:05 he's the kind of missionary we're
10:08 looking for and yet
10:17 failure here he sits outside the city
10:19 angry at the very people he should be
10:27 pouting you know one of our problems
10:30 today folks is that we have the wrong measuring
10:38 stick the one question they did not ask
10:41 Jonah and by the way it's a question we
10:44 usually ask when we're interrogating
10:46 missionary candidates on the board where I
10:46 I [Music]
10:47 [Music]
10:53 serve do you have a love for the people
10:55 you're going to minister
10:58 to because if you don't I don't care
11:01 what kind of theology you have I don't
11:04 care how many times God has called you I
11:06 don't care how many miracles you've been
11:08 through I don't care how much preaching
11:10 you've done if you don't have a love for
11:12 the people you're ministering to you're
11:18 you isn't it too bad that we have so
11:21 many people who have good Theology and bad
11:23 bad
11:25 attitudes if you were to ask them about
11:28 their theology their theology would be
11:31 as orthod Ox as it could be and their
11:42 mean his credentials well he passes as
11:44 far as the credentials are concerned but
11:48 uh God just shakes his
11:50 head now let's call a second witness
11:53 let's call the witness of his companions
11:55 let's just go through these chapters and
11:57 find the people who knew Jonah let's
12:01 begin in chapter one now we have here
12:03 gentlemen and Ladies we have here the
12:05 sailors who were on board the ship where
12:07 Jonah was and I want to ask these
12:09 Sailors a question what do you know about
12:11 about
12:15 Jonah that man is a
12:17 troublemaker everything was going fine
12:21 on our ship till he got on he's a
12:23 troublemaker we were in danger he was
12:25 sleeping you're going to send him to be
12:29 a missionary he sleeps
12:31 we were praying to our Gods he didn't
12:33 come up and pray to his God when he did nothing
12:34 nothing
12:36 happened we finally had to cast some
12:38 lots and they pointed to him that he was
12:40 the Troublemaker you're going to send
12:41 him out to the mission field a
12:44 troublemaker like that he almost wrecked
12:47 our ship and we almost lost our lives
12:53 troublemaker now in the Bible there are
12:54 two kinds of troublemakers there are
12:56 people who cause trouble because they're
12:58 out of the will of God and there are
12:59 people who cause trouble because in the
13:00 will of
13:03 God Jonah caused trouble out of the will
13:05 of God David caused trouble out of the
13:08 will of God Abraham caused trouble out
13:11 of the will of God Jesus caused trouble
13:13 in the will of God remember one of the
13:14 indictments they brought against the
13:17 Lord Jesus when they brought in those uh
13:20 Witnesses they said he stirs up the
13:23 people that's an awful sin to stir up
13:25 the people because the people ought to
13:28 just sit and not be stirred up the same
13:30 thing was ACC the same accusation was
13:33 made to Paul these men who have turned
13:35 the world upside down have come
13:38 hither Vance havner has said whatever
13:39 wherever Paul went there was either a
13:42 Revival or a riot and sometimes there
13:49 troublemaker well let's moved to the
13:51 next chapter now folks if you'll just
13:53 move your chairs back a little bit I
13:55 want to call the great fish
13:57 in he had a rather close attachment to
14:00 Jonah we want to talk to him
14:03 him uh Mr
14:06 Fish what do you know about this
14:12 stubborn
14:15 stubborn he was called by The God Who made
14:17 made
14:21 me to go preach and he refused to do it
14:23 I am only a
14:25 fish but when my God tells me to do
14:30 something I I do it I do it gladly
14:32 everything in all of creation does what
14:35 God wants it to do except people and
14:38 especially Jonah he's a stubborn man he
14:40 could have confessed his sin and
14:41 repented on board that ship but he
14:43 didn't do it he could have done it on
14:45 the way from the ship to the water but
14:48 he didn't do it and my God instructed me
14:50 to go swallow him and on the way down he
14:52 could have done it he didn't do it took
14:54 three days and three nights before he
14:55 finally was
14:59 broken he's a stubborn man
15:02 and quite frankly Mr committee
15:15 three chapter 3 let's call on the people of
15:17 of
15:19 Nineveh you heard of Jonah oh we heard
15:22 of Jonah he came walking through our
15:24 city he was a weirdest looking fellow we ever
15:25 ever
15:27 saw and we found out he had been
15:30 swallowed by a great f and he had been
15:32 vomited out in the land he'd gone
15:34 through a miracle and he preached a
15:38 message to us he said
15:40 repent 40 days Nineveh shall be
15:43 overthrown really he came to be our
15:46 savior he came as an ambassador and he
15:48 led us to repentance but we don't
15:50 understand this fell you know he should
15:53 be in our city praying with people and
15:56 teaching people and encour passing out
15:59 follow-up literature enrolling people
16:01 and you know where he
16:05 is he's out there sitting in a booth
16:08 pouting we found out he really would
16:09 have been happier if all of us had gone to
16:11 to
16:14 hell and quite frankly he's a problem to
16:16 us we love him because he brought us
16:18 God's message but we we don't know what
16:21 to do with him he's he's an enigma he's
16:27 problem well we move to chapter
16:41 complaint the worm comes
16:45 in and we say to the worm you know Jonah
16:49 yes the great Creator called me and said
16:56 man what do you know about him he is an
17:00 immature person
17:03 now he may be 40 50 years old I don't
17:05 know how old Jonah was he was old enough
17:06 to know
17:09 better but he's a child he's immature
17:12 look at the evidences of his immaturity
17:15 he's living by his feelings not by
17:18 obedience to God he doesn't feel like he
17:20 ought to do something and so he's
17:22 sitting there in that Booth
17:24 pouting he's
17:27 angry he's angry at
17:30 God he's angry at God because he didn't
17:33 get what he wanted I meet people
17:34 people
17:38 regularly whose lives are filled with
17:41 bitterness because they're angry at
17:44 God I've been receiving strange letters
17:47 from a radio listener who's angry at
17:51 God and now she's angry at
17:54 me and this is tragic God didn't do
17:56 something she thought he should do and
17:57 he didn't do it the way it was supposed
17:59 to be done according to to her
18:01 Blueprints and she's angry and this
18:04 bitterness just shows up in her letters
18:06 and the worm says you know he's an
18:10 immature fell he's angry living by his
18:12 feelings he's immature because he's
18:14 bigoted and
18:17 Prejudiced as a Jew he did not want to
18:20 see Nineveh spared because Nineveh is
18:23 the enemy of Israel he wanted to be able
18:25 to go home and say to his Jewish
18:28 congregation see God destroyed Nineveh
18:30 for her sins now we had better repent or
18:33 he'll destroy
18:36 us he wanted to be a good Patriot and he
18:39 was so bigoted and so Prejudice you know
18:46 childish you put dinner in front of a
18:48 child and on that plate is
18:51 liver I heard a song on the radio some
18:59 quiver frankly I like liver
19:02 it saved my life when I was a little boy
19:04 I had to eat it
19:07 regularly and so the child gets liver
19:08 put in front of
19:13 him I'm not going to eat that why I
19:16 don't like it that's no good
19:18 reason last time I took medicine I
19:21 didn't like it there no good reason Prejudice
19:24 Prejudice
19:26 bigotry and the worm says you know he
19:27 doesn't have any burden for the loss
19:28 you're going to send him out of as a
19:31 missionary he has no burden for the Lost
19:34 he's sitting there in that Booth hoping
19:36 that the city will be
19:39 destroyed now he was shown Mercy by God
19:41 God showed him mercy God brought him up
19:43 out of the depths God's God was merciful
19:45 to him but he won't share that Mercy
19:47 with anybody
19:49 else he doesn't have a burden for soul
19:52 oh sure he can quote he can quote
19:54 scripture but he's quoting scripture
19:57 from men who love souls he quotes from
19:59 Exodus has he forgotten that Moses went
20:02 up there and said dear God pardon the
20:03 sins of the people of Israel and if you
20:06 can't pardon them take my
20:09 life judge me but don't judge them
20:11 that's the way Paul prayed Paul said I'd
20:14 rather go to hell than see my own people
20:16 not get the
20:20 gospel so says our witnessing worm he
20:22 has no burden for the lost and he goes
20:24 on to say he is very unlike the God that he
20:26 he
20:29 preaches God is great gracious this
20:32 man's not gracious God is merciful he's
20:35 not merciful slow to anger why he loses
20:38 his temper like that great kindness he
20:39 doesn't know the meaning of kindness
20:41 repent us thee of the evil his heart is
20:43 so hard he will not
20:47 repent how can you send him out to Bear
20:51 witness of a God that he really
20:54 doesn't live
20:56 like this last week or so I've been
20:59 rereading some of Dr aw toer essays if
21:02 you've never read toer you have robbed
21:05 yourself you get a hold of aw tozer's
21:08 writings and read them and every essay
21:10 every little message has the same
21:12 message same
21:14 emphasis it's not important to know
21:17 about God we have to know
21:21 God a lot of us know about God we know
21:23 about God's character and about God's
21:25 creation and about God's word we don't
21:29 know God and the more we know God the
21:31 more we become like God and Jonah got
21:33 A's on all of his theology exams but did
21:36 not really know
21:39 God and our worm continues he told you
21:42 he had answers to prayer he did but his
21:43 prayers are very
21:45 selfish well that prayer back in Chapter
21:48 2 he prayed that to save his own
21:51 skin but in chapter one he didn't pray
21:53 to save anybody else's skin and here in
21:55 chapter 4 instead of praying for these
21:57 dear people who are repenting he's
22:00 praying take my life take my life I want
22:02 to die I'd rather die than go back home
22:04 and have to face my Jewish friends
22:10 Nineveh his prayers are selfish if he
22:14 doesn't get what he wants he gets
22:16 angry to put it in one simple sentence he's
22:18 he's
22:20 pampered he's
22:24 pampered he likes to have Creature
22:27 Comforts when he was sitting out there
22:29 in the booth and and the gourd came up
22:32 he was so happy for that gourd because
22:34 it shaded him from the
22:37 Sun and our worm says to the committee
22:39 you know folks the thing that makes you
22:42 happy shows what your character is he
22:45 wasn't happy because Nineveh repented he
22:47 was happy because he had some shade from the
22:53 Sun but our worm doesn't leave much of a
22:56 witness left does
22:59 he according to Jonah's credential
23:02 he's got it made he's the ideal
23:04 missionary according to Jonah's
23:06 companions he
23:10 flunks he's the worst possible candidate
23:11 what are we going to
23:14 do well there's one more witness we need
23:16 to call that's the witness of
23:20 God Jonah's Creator and
23:23 Jonah's god let's ask God what he knows
23:26 about this now far be it from me that I
23:30 should ever interrogate God
23:32 but let's use our imaginations tonight
23:36 did you call Jonah yes I did called him
23:40 twice did Jonah obey
23:45 you yes he obeyed me outwardly but not
23:48 inwardly what do you mean by that his
23:49 heart wasn't in
23:53 it in Ephesians chapter 6 and verse six
23:56 it says doing the will of
24:03 and Jonah did my
24:06 will but not from his
24:09 heart he did it because he had
24:12 to are the statements true that these
24:15 Witnesses gave yes they're all true
24:16 every one of
24:20 them well then Lord what do you suggest we
24:31 there's another lesson he has to learn
24:33 from me that he hasn't learned yet let
24:36 me teach him that lesson I'm glad God
24:38 doesn't give up on missionary candidates
24:41 or preacher candidates or Deacon
24:44 candidates or Saint
24:46 candidates I'm glad that God didn't give
24:48 up on Abraham the first time Abraham
24:51 fell flat on his face down in Egypt I'm
24:53 glad he didn't give up on David when
24:55 David ran
24:58 scared I'm glad he didn't give up on
25:01 Jeremiah when Jeremiah was ready to quit
25:04 I'm glad he didn't give up on Peter when
25:07 Peter denied him three times I'm glad he
25:09 didn't give up on John Mark we wouldn't
25:11 have the gospel of Mark if he'd given up
25:13 on John
25:15 Mark I'm glad he hasn't given up on you
25:18 and un given up on me now this is no
25:20 opportunity to tempt
25:23 God but it is an encouragement not to
25:26 quit and God says to the missionary
25:28 committee let's give him another
25:31 opportunity he has some more lessons to
25:33 learn and I think after he's learned
25:35 these lessons he will be just the
25:38 missionary you
25:42 need I notice how God deals with Jonah
25:44 up till now he's been dealing with Jonah
25:46 with big things
25:51 storms and seas and great fish lots of
25:54 noise and
25:58 pressure but now he's not doing that now
26:02 he's dealing with go with Jonah very
26:07 gently he's using things like um gourds
26:11 and worms and wind now the wind he's
26:15 talking about here is that hot Oriental
26:19 wind that is so stifling and so
26:22 smothering that you can't take it when
26:25 this kind of a wind begins to blow in
26:28 the desert areas people run for cover
26:31 they find any cool place they can find
26:35 because this wind just almost buries you
26:37 in the stifling atmosphere and the sun
26:40 was beating down upon Jonah nothing
26:44 noisy nothing huge and
26:47 cumbersome but it was there God had to
26:49 deal further with Jonah but he dealt
26:53 with him so gently and so patiently and
26:55 so graciously because he had to teach
26:59 him one more lesson
27:00 you see in the first three chapters of
27:02 this book Jonah had learned three very
27:06 important lessons about God chapter one
27:07 he learned the lesson of God's
27:10 Providence you can't run away from
27:12 God wherever you go God's going to be
27:16 there and he'll keep backing you into a
27:18 Corner chapter 2 he learned the lesson
27:20 of God's pardon if you cry out and say
27:22 Lord forgive me God will forgive you
27:25 chapter 3 he learned the lesson of God's
27:28 power you obey God God will do something
27:30 something God powerfully worked through
27:32 his word in chapter
27:36 3 but there's one little word In Jonah
27:39 410 that shows the fourth lesson Jonah
27:41 had to learn the most important lesson
27:44 not the lesson of God's Providence and
27:46 not the lesson of God's pardon and not
27:48 the lesson of God's power but the lesson
27:52 of God's pity Jonah had to learn how to
28:00 souls now how did God teach him this
28:02 this is a truth I picked up from Phil
28:04 Lassie he and I have been working
28:06 together for a long time we haven't
28:07 gotten it written yet but we're working
28:10 on a book on Jonah and Phil said to me
28:12 you know did you ever notice that the
28:14 first time God dealt with Jonah he stuck
28:17 him down in the in the sea down in the
28:20 fish way down where it was dark and
28:22 dismal and damp
28:24 damp
28:26 dangerous the second time he dealt with
28:28 Jonah he had him right out in the open
28:30 with the sun beating down on him that
28:34 hot wind blowing against him from water
28:38 which was cold and clammy to heat from
28:41 Darkness to
28:44 sunlight I said tell me why did he do it
28:48 that way Phil said I think that the
28:51 reason God did this was to remind Jonah
28:55 of what it felt like to be a Lost Sinner
28:56 and I think he's
28:59 right what what's it like to be a Lost
29:00 Sinner it's like being down in the
29:03 bottom of the ocean Dark
29:06 Dark
29:08 Death Jonah said I'm in a dungeon I've
29:16 me where are unsaved people tonight
29:19 they're in darkness they're in death
29:21 they're in
29:23 dungeons then he went to the Other
29:26 Extreme what's it like to be unsaved
29:29 that awful heat that awful to torment
29:30 that constant [Music]
29:32 [Music]
29:35 torture I wonder if In Jonah chap
29:40 4 God wasn't giving Jonah A Taste of
29:43 hell I firmly believe that if tonight
29:47 every one of us dreamed that we went to
29:51 hell and came back it would change our
29:53 attitude toward lost souls it would
29:55 change our attitude toward giving toward
29:59 praying toward obeying toward
30:02 missions and God said let me just take
30:05 one more opportunity of dealing with
30:08 Jonah but Lord what is it you want from
30:11 Jonah I mean after all he did go preach oh
30:13 oh
30:16 yeah but you know when I made Jonah
30:18 here's what I gave him says God I gave
30:19 him a
30:23 body I gave him a mind I gave him a will
30:24 and I gave him a
30:28 heart and I called All of Jonah to serve
30:31 me and over in the first chapter I said
30:35 arise go to Nineveh I wanted him to
30:38 understand my will with his mind I
30:40 wanted him to love my will with his
30:42 heart I wanted him to do my will with
30:45 his will controlling his
30:49 body but instead Jonah had my will in
30:52 his mind but not the rest of him and he
30:53 picked up his body and went in the
30:55 opposite direction so I had to track him
30:58 down and in Chapter 2 he said I will I
31:01 will so in chapter two I got his will
31:03 chapter one I got his mind chapter two I
31:05 got his will chapter three I got his
31:06 body he took his body and went to
31:15 heart and I want to get his
31:17 heart well how you going to get his
31:21 heart I'm going to show him how dumb he
31:28 things and so up comes this plant and
31:31 shelters Jonah he say oh I'm so thankful
31:34 for this plant plant dies Along Came the
31:36 worm that's the end of the plant and
31:39 Jonah's very unhappy about the plant and
31:41 God says you know Jonah you're a
31:44 fool this plant came up in a night and
31:46 it perishes in a night here's a whole
31:47 city of people who are going to live
31:50 forever someplace Heaven or
31:52 Hell Jonah this plant you didn't have
31:53 anything to do with that plant it just
31:56 came and it went and you were sorry when
31:59 it left I made these people over here
32:01 I'm concerned about them there's just
32:04 one plant there's a million people the
32:07 only issue here is your comfort over
32:10 here the issue is eternity now Jonah
32:11 what kind of a person are you do you
32:14 love creature comfort so much but don't
32:16 you have any pity for lost [Music]
32:18 [Music]
32:21 souls he had to teach
32:25 Jonah the lesson of God's pity God wants my
32:26 my
32:30 heart give me thy heart keep thy heart
32:32 with all diligence for out of it are the
32:36 issues of life if the Heart Is Right the
32:38 will will be right if the Heart Is Right
32:41 the mind will be right if the Heart Is
32:44 Right the body will be
32:47 right and so the last lesson God had to teach
32:52 Jonah I want your
32:55 heart if you love
32:58 me you'll love my people
33:03 I made these people they need
33:05 you and so when you get right down to it
33:07 doing the will of God is not a matter of
33:10 knowing it in the mind
33:13 uh-uh it's a matter of loving it in the
33:17 heart Ephesians 66 doing the will of God
33:18 from the
33:21 heart and if I am faced with something I
33:23 have to do and I can't honestly say Lord
33:26 I love this I love you for this I've got
33:29 to stay on my face before God until he
33:32 has my heart that's why when Jesus spoke to
33:33 to
33:36 Peter at that breakfast
33:39 meeting he didn't say Peter do you know
33:42 my will he didn't say Peter do you
33:43 understand my word he said
33:50 me so the most important question we
33:53 have to answer tonight is we are on
33:56 trial not Jonah his trial is over we're
33:59 on trial do we do the will of God from
34:02 our heart do we love the will of God no
34:04 matter what it may cost us no matter how
34:07 people may criticize us no matter what
34:11 discomfort we may encounter do we love
34:12 the will of God from our
34:16 heart that's the way Jesus
34:19 lived I Delight to do thy will oh Lord
34:23 he said thy law is within my heart I do
34:30 that's why there's no verse 12 here you
34:32 have to write verse 12 now some of
34:35 you would not agree with God you'd say
34:37 well Jonah did his job leave him alone oh
34:38 oh
34:42 no verse 12 ought to read and Jonah said
34:46 oh God I Repent of my selfishness and my
34:49 immaturity forgive me now go with me
34:51 we're going back to
34:54 Nineveh and let's get the work done I
34:56 think that's the way it would read and I
34:59 think that's what Jonah did
35:00 I firmly believe in my own heart that
35:03 Jonah came to the place where he saw how
35:06 foolish he was he confessed his sin and
35:09 God gave him a Compassionate Heart for
35:12 the people to whom he was
35:15 ministering the name Jonah means
35:18 means
35:20 Dove Jonah didn't turn out to be a dove
35:23 turn out to be a
35:25 hawk when you think of a dove you think
35:27 of Peace he brought a storm when you
35:29 think think of a dove you think of
35:38 disobedient he was grieving the Holy
35:41 Spirit who is the
35:46 dove well Jonah we have uh interviewed
35:48 you your credentials are
35:51 marvelous your companions don't have
35:55 such a good testimony for you but God's
35:57 on your side Jonah God's is going to
36:00 give you another chance learn the lesson
36:01 of God's
36:05 pity when you've learned that when you
36:08 can do the will of God from the heart
36:12 Jonah God can really use you and you'll be
36:13 be
36:20 blessing gracious
36:24 father how many times we have
36:27 counterfeited obedience by outward action
36:29 action
36:32 when our inward attitudes were very very
36:34 selfish and
36:37 sinful and for this we are
36:40 sorry we are not here tonight oh God to
36:43 search each other you must search our
36:47 hearts you must try us let us know if
36:50 there be some Wicked way in
36:53 US father we like to excuse our sins
36:56 because we have good
36:59 theology old Lord help us to see tonight
37:01 that our theology is only as good as our
37:05 living that our believing is worthless without
37:09 behaving gracious
37:14 father Deliver Us from sins in good
37:17 standing sins of bitterness and
37:22 criticism sins of anger sins of inner
37:25 disposition that are
37:28 ungodly and help us tonight to begin to
37:30 learn the lesson of your
37:33 pity and may the love of Christ
37:36 constrain us and may the love of God fill
37:38 fill
37:41 us and may we do the will of God from the
37:46 heart not of
37:50 necessity not of
37:52 compulsion but out of
37:55 love I pray for the one who may be here
37:58 who is not saved May that one come and
38:01 Trust Christ I pray for that believer
38:04 who is rebelling May that one surrender
38:07 do something to all of us
38:10 tonight so that we'll not be
38:13 be
38:16 unloving for Jesus
