The Suzuki Jimny is presented not as a luxury or performance vehicle, but as an honest, capable, and affordable off-roader that offers a genuine sense of freedom and adventure, especially for those new to off-roading.

Okay. [music]
Often times freedom is considered to
come at a high cost. But cars like the
Jimny reminds us that it doesn't have to
be. It may not be a status symbol, but
what it is is a companion. The kind that
never asks, "Where are we going?"
Instead, it's a sort of companion that
asks, "Are you ready?"
And it's that attitude coupled with the
tiny footprint that makes this the David
in a desert full of Goliaths.
Because when the going gets tough, the
Jimny's biggest weakness becomes its
greatest strength.
All right, first things first. Let's
clearly add on this one. I adore the
Suzuki Jimny. I love the fact that it is
so tiny and it makes me feel like a
giant when I'm standing right next to
it. You see, this compact form factor of
the Jimny has been its superpower ever
since it was launched back in the 1970.
But most importantly, I love the fact
that it is honest. It is an off-roader
and it's not shy about it. Every corner
of the car feels like it's got a purpose
to it. Starting with these cheap black
plastic padding that's going all around
the car. That's also done as a clever
design choice because these are the
areas that are most susceptible to
damage when you're going off-road. And
if need be and you have to replace them,
it doesn't really hurt your wallet. And
then you have the overall design of the
car. You see, from afar, it feels like
the car has been designed with a ruler.
And that is also done on purpose because
this design gives the Jimny better
approach and departure angles than some
of the off-road kings like the Lancrosa
300 or even a Range Rover. And then you
have the small grill that's standing
very high from the ground. This is done
so because [music] it gives the Jimny
the ability to wait through 300 mm of
water. And straight from the factory,
you get 15-in alloy wheels with
all-terrain tires. And all around the
car, you can find these large glass
areas that'll give better visibility
when you're going off-road. You see,
underneath this tiny form factor of the
car lies a ladder frame chassis, coil
spring suspension, and a proper lowrange
transfer case. It is [music] an
off-roader and a true-blooded off-roader
at that as well. And then when you come
to the rear, it does have true
off-roader designs like the rear mounted
tires and a door that opens to the side.
But again, don't be fooled by this
compact form factor because on the
inside, Suzuki has done some clever
design choices that makes it quite
spacious. Let me explain what I'm
You see, the secret lies in this boxy
design. Because of the design of the
car, passengers are forced to have an
upright seating position. That means
that you have enough leg room,
especially for an average sized human or
in my case an above average sized person
to be rather comfortable, especially
when you're going for long drives. When
it comes to the rest of the interior,
it's very simple and functional. It's
meant to last the test of time. Pretty
much in line with the rest of the models
in Suzuki's lineup. The rest of the
interior is quite familiar. Here you can
find the typical Suzuki switch gear, a 7
or 9 in touchscreen with wireless Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto on the higher
variants and old school rotary controls
for the AC. Below that are aircraft
style toggle switches for hill descent,
hill hold, and power windows. Storage
options are quite basic and includes two
solid cup holders in the middle and
large cubby holders on the doors. In
terms of practicality, you get cloth
seats in favor for durability and a USBA
[music] port as well as a 12vt socket
for charging. Since this is the five
door version, you get proper rear bend
seats, but space here is tight, and the
lack of a flat floor, rear AC vents, and
armrests make it more practical for four
rather than five. [music] Boot space
grows from 85 L in the 3o version to 211
L in the 5o version,
and folding the seats will give you an
>> Under the hood lies a 1.5 L naturally
aspirated petrol engine that makes 103
horsepower and 134 new m of torque. Now
on paper it might not sound like it's
enough, but in terrains like this it is
more than sufficient. This is a terrain
where the Jimny feels very much at home.
In fact, the Jimny is so much fun that
when you switch the lowrange gear to
rear wheel drive and turn the traction
control off, you can even do some
donuts. The suspension might be a little
bouncy on the tarmac, but in uneven
terrains, this is where it makes the
most sense. Now, to describe the
off-road capability of the Jimny, I
quote numbers like 37° of approach
angle, 49° of departure angle, and 28°
of breakover angle. But the fact of the
matter is, as long as you carry enough
momentum, the Jimny is pretty much
unstoppable no matter where you take it.
But the real win here is a 14 1/2 km per
liter fuel efficiency, which translates
to more time in the dunes and less time
at the pumps. Now that we are back on
the smooth tarmac and we've gotten the
tire pressures back to normal, this kind
of gives us a better picture of what the
performance of the Jimny is actually
like. All right, so Suzuki claims that
this particular variant, which is a 5-o
automatic variant, can do the 0 to 100
sprint in about 17 seconds. Let's try
and see how close we can get in the real
world. The left foot is on the brake,
fully pressed. Build up the revs with
And that is about 100
We have 17.39 seconds
on record. Now the three door version is
a lot more quicker because obviously
it's getting a lot less weight as
compared to the 5 door version. But
again the car is meant to perform better
on the rougher roads. So to summarize
though the Jimny might be a decent car
as a daily driver. I think it'll be
better suited for people who are
exploring their love for off-roading
and are just beginning out their
journey. See, like I've said from the
beginning, I adored a Suzuki Jimny, and
that is primarily because it doesn't
pretend to be anything that it is not.
It doesn't sell you luxury or speed.
What it does give you is a sense of
freedom, which is [music] why I love it
so much. Sure, life on the paved roads
could be a lot more smoother, but when
you take it off the beaten ground, the
Jimmy shines. So, if you own the Jimmy,
it might not be your daily driver, but
I'm fairly certain that it'll be the
sort of car that you look forward to
driving. Which is why I think that
renting the Suzuki Jimny might make most
sense for a lot of people. Because with
a self drive app, you can rent the Jimny
for almost an unbeatable price. That way
you get to experience the sense of
freedom without any strings [music] attached.
