0:05 to help you overcome your public
0:07 speaking anxiety and nerves by at least 50
0:08 50
0:09 these tips will help you cut your
0:19 i'd like to tell you about two resources
0:22 the first is a free pdf download with

0:34 and leadership and there's always at
0:36 least one free class that you can take
0:38 i'll put links to all of those resources
0:40 in the description below this video
0:43 there are two main inroads to your
0:45 public speaking anxiety
0:47 and the first is changing your mindset
0:49 the second is changing your behavior or
0:51 the concrete actions that you take you
0:54 can start at either entry point in this
0:57 feedback loop because your mindset and
0:59 your behavior reinforce each other in
1:01 this video i'll be giving you six tips
1:03 all about mindset or how you think if
1:05 you can change the way you think about
1:07 public speaking you'll change the way
1:08 you feel
1:10 in a follow-up video i'll give you six
1:13 more tips that are all behavioral based
1:15 that's another way to get at this
1:17 anxiety and when that one's ready i will
1:19 post it and put a link to it in the
1:20 description below and i'll put a summary
1:23 of these six tips at the end first
1:26 realize that anxiety and nervousness are
1:28 not signs of trouble
1:30 these are just signs that you're about
1:32 to do something important
1:35 we don't get nervous about meaningless
1:37 activities even professionals get
1:40 nervous i was reading an interview with
1:42 the world famous and veteran actor
1:44 michael douglas
1:46 and he said i'm always nervous when i
1:48 have to do public speaking and i have
1:51 now gotten used to my nerves and how to
1:52 deal with it but it's part of the
1:55 excitement so even rich famous and
1:57 normally confident people get nervous
1:59 about public speaking
2:01 it's not a sign of trouble or that
2:03 there's something wrong with you
2:04 second realize that you're only about
2:07 half as nervous as you think the other
2:10 half is called excitement there are two
2:13 sides of the same emotional coin
2:15 i heard a consultant the other day say
2:17 that she has grown to like the
2:19 butterflies in her stomach before she
2:21 presents she said it reminds her that
2:23 she's challenging herself
2:26 it's the same with acting playing guitar
2:28 or sports in front of a crowd a lot of
2:30 those feelings are excitement after
2:32 people speak and the anxiety is gone
2:34 they still feel excited about what they
2:35 just did
2:38 so the mindset tip is not to talk to
2:40 yourself about how nervous you are
2:42 instead talk to yourself about how at
2:43 least half of what you're feeling is
2:46 excitement those butterflies are proof
2:48 that you're alive
2:50 and about to do something special number
2:52 three realize that you do not look on
2:54 the outside as nervous as you feel on
2:57 the inside your listeners can't tell how
2:58 you feel
3:00 they can only see what you show them and
3:03 i've asked hundreds of speakers right
3:04 after they speak how nervous did you
3:06 feel on a scale of one to ten they
3:08 usually say eight nine or ten
3:10 but the listeners routinely say that the
3:13 speaker only looks about two or three
3:15 out of ten on that anxiety scale so once
3:17 you realize that you don't come across
3:19 nearly as nervous as you feel that's
3:21 half the battle
3:23 i saw sylvester stallone rocky talking
3:25 about giving a big speech before he
3:27 spoke he said his heart was pounding he
3:29 was really nervous his adult daughter
3:31 was with him and she looked out at the
3:33 huge crowd and she said to him dad i
3:36 don't know how you can be so calm i'd be
3:37 freaking out
3:40 so he was nervous but he said to her no
3:42 no it's going to be fine i've got this
3:44 his own daughter couldn't tell that he
3:47 was having that spike of anxiety right
3:48 before he spoke
3:51 the takeaway is to play it cool like
3:54 rocky other people really can't tell and
3:56 that's one less thing for you to worry
3:59 about and fourth the peak or spike of
4:02 nervousness lasts less than 60 seconds
4:03 the hardest part is usually the
4:06 anticipation the waiting a teacher i
4:08 know andrea newman talks about that
4:10 spike of nervousness that happens right
4:13 before we speak and right up until about
4:15 30 seconds into our message that's when
4:18 we feel the most intense anxiety that
4:20 spike of nerves goes down drastically
4:22 once we get rolling it's just like a
4:24 professional football quarterback their
4:27 anxiety is highest right before the big
4:29 game and up through the first few plays
4:31 and then they settle into their game
4:33 plan so the mindset tip is to remind
4:36 yourself that you'll feel much better
4:37 just moments after you start your
4:40 presentation number five accept that
4:43 anxiety and nervousness are not a
4:46 barrier from doing an outstanding job
4:48 many speakers mistakenly believe that if
4:49 they're nervous then they can't do a
4:50 good job
4:53 but it's just not true almost every
4:55 athlete for example will admit to
4:57 getting nervous before a big game
4:59 anxiety doesn't stop them from
5:02 performing well winning or losing games
5:05 has nothing to do with how nervous a
5:06 team is beforehand
5:09 and the same goes for public speaking
5:11 some of the best professional speakers
5:13 in the world admit to getting really
5:15 nervous but their nerves don't stop them
5:18 from completely crushing it so accept
5:21 that anxiety is not a barrier to doing a
5:24 superior presentation number six assume
5:27 that everybody is rooting for you
5:29 virtually everybody wants you to do well
5:32 we drastically overestimate the negative
5:35 judgment or possible embarrassment we
5:37 could experience the truth is i'd say
5:40 that 99 of listeners are sympathetic
5:42 they've all done some public speaking
5:44 they know what it's like
5:47 and i say 99 because sometimes you will
5:49 see people with an unpleasant facial
5:51 expression but even those people are
5:53 probably just like that that negative
5:55 face that you see
5:57 maybe that's just the way they are
5:58 that's not about you they're probably
6:01 just having a bad day so assume that
6:04 everybody wants you to succeed and they
6:06 are on your side and here again are all
6:09 six mindset tips your mindset is all
6:11 about changing the way you think about
6:13 public speaking and it's usually a
6:16 necessary step to overcoming anxiety so
6:18 my question of the day for you is which
6:20 of these do you believe would help you
6:23 make the most immediate progress
6:25 feel free to post your comment below
6:27 and as mentioned i have a follow-up
6:30 video coming out soon about the six
6:32 behavioral tips to reduce speaking
6:34 anxiety i'll put a link to that as well
6:36 as other resources in the description
6:38 below as soon as that video is ready
6:41 both mindset changes and behavioral
6:44 changes are starting points
6:46 that will get you on a more positive and
6:48 confident feedback loop so thanks for
6:50 watching god bless and i will see you in
