0:09 so we hit the crisis in 2015
0:14 you've got injured late 2015 no I I had
0:19 ankle so that I wasn't applying had the
0:23 momiji I just wasn't enjoying it I'll
0:25 sing you know as we do as human beings
0:29 we're judging ourselves on our peers
0:30 which is in a friendship group you think
0:32 people start to achieve it both football
0:34 and you think you're stuck yeah and then
0:37 also academically it's not like that so
0:40 the law degree commences yeah do you go
0:44 back to Townsville with any promises
0:46 about football do you just sink packing
0:49 football if I'm gonna go up there and
0:50 see what happens or the team but I did
0:59 have a contra godless well the year
1:08 before I got offered a contract from the
1:10 Blackhawks their first year but I was
1:13 happy in Brisbane so I stayed in
1:14 Brisbane and then at the end of that
1:17 year they offered me another opportunity
1:19 to go back okay and I just sort of
1:23 thought I just started my degree I
1:25 wanted to finish it as quick as possible
1:26 and I thought the best way to do that
1:28 would be to move back to town so I could
1:30 stay with mum and dad for a bit while I
1:32 was finishing you know financially if it
1:33 sparks a mum and dad is filling towns
1:35 all this advice ah yeah so you can sort
1:38 of manage the fact that you study you
1:40 football or what maybe income is not
1:42 gonna be as high yeah I still worry I'm
1:44 on the ring nearly at the start I did
1:47 work full-time but after a while ended
1:49 up working full-time
1:50 it's an incredible committee you've made
1:52 over for three years to play football a
1:56 dive-off a really high level study
1:58 full-time yep and trained photographer
2:01 yeah same work 40 hours a week yes I
2:04 started a massive when I first went back
2:06 was just I was working in a construction
2:09 shop called global fasteners and I work
2:14 yeah well they started intangible and I
2:17 started working for them when I was
2:18 playing twenty so I went back and I
2:20 would work there for maybe I can't
2:23 remember how long and then I've got an
2:24 opportunity to work in a criminal law
2:26 firm in Townsville and so once I never
2:30 thought I'd enjoy criminal law but once
2:32 I started doing only way I want to go
2:34 yeah what am I trying to be a commercial
2:36 or something at some stage but I do
2:38 enjoy the criminal cuz it's fast-paced
2:40 you're in court you're meeting with
2:42 clients I go to the when I was in towns
2:45 I go to prison every Friday every
2:47 afternoon so you sort of just it was
2:49 always busy
2:53 what stories of you know we'll get into
2:56 that we'll get into that later we're
2:57 into to the now qualified lawyer and
3:01 practicing yeah Sam foster at the end
3:05 what happened the Blackhawks you know
3:07 you spent a fair bit of time there
3:09 before you spend a couple of games a
3:11 tweet I don't know how it all worked out
3:13 which is obviously we're gonna piece it
3:14 together here like I said the Blackhawks
3:17 in that run probably should have got a
3:19 title over the line in my opinion humbly
3:23 where did is if you just give us a bit
3:27 of a journey through that couple years I
3:31 feeling like mentally good yeah it was
3:36 sort of a process after this sort of
3:38 getting the degree was probably my last
3:40 year at the Blackhawks that I've sort of
3:43 felt clearest cuz I got through the
3:46 majority of my degree or the light at
3:48 the end of the tunnel and I sort of
3:50 started to enjoy my football again for a
3:52 long time I didn't know was just sort of
3:54 something I'd do but I most boys have
3:59 like a weird relationship with football
4:01 that they hate it but they can't cope I
4:03 can't give it away and I'm sort of like
4:05 that from all what you've done since we
4:06 were young boys into seven exactly and a
4:09 lot of your entire life is based around
4:12 I guess your I don't own that as before
4:15 as a footballer you know and then sort
4:17 of as you get older you you don't sort
4:21 of think like that is ours anymore part
4:23 yourself you see how to start to feel
4:26 confident often
4:27 self to say I'm saying I'll stir the
4:28 lawyer and I'm more than just football
4:30 yeah especially when you grow up in a
4:32 small town to like football everything
4:35 up there
4:35 exactly so you're actually famous
4:38 genuinely know like okay I apply that
4:45 like the difference between being
4:47 eternal Blackhawks player and a nice
4:48 tiger player has a massive difference on
4:50 your local community like you don't go
4:52 out into prison city and people go oh my
4:55 god saying you play for the East Tigers
4:56 you know yeah you're a Blackhawks player
4:58 in terms when you go out to the Mancow
5:03 but but like things like the media so
5:06 like intense all the media reports on
5:09 the Blackwater Blackhawks and Townsell
5:12 heat so like the the basketball in there
5:14 you know there's a lot more attention on
5:17 sort of the second level sport for
5:20 sports you know the reserve greater
5:21 sports so there's a lot more attention
5:23 on things like that bike you know did
5:25 Blackhawks we're very suitable I say
5:28 they're very similar to East like
5:30 extremely professional
5:31 you know there's nothing that us boys go
5:34 without and if we trained extremely hard
5:36 I think probably I think every year we
5:40 just sort of dropped off again just sort
5:43 of exhaust this entire world started
5:45 we're just exhausted by the end of the
5:47 year and you half the issue is he's been
5:49 mentally fresh at the end of the how
5:51 many times do you see a team go through
5:53 the entire year non can touch them and
5:55 then they just drop out at the end of
5:57 the year like what sunny coach did last
6:00 year do you ever think that has
6:02 something to do with the fact I mean
6:05 Townsend was probably the next biggest
6:07 behind ourselves and sunny coast as far
6:10 as a team that gets a lot of support
6:12 from their feeder club they got a lot of
6:13 players
6:14 I mean towns all over say the pride the
6:18 cutters get the majority of Cowboys guys
6:20 to be there so I always feel like
6:24 sometimes when you come to the Big Dance
6:29 and you come to the knock them down
6:32 dragon out contest
6:33 you got to sort of want to believe this
6:35 a bit more
6:35 yeah do you ever feel like that has
6:38 something like sunny co / townsville
6:40 flora that is used when it when it when
6:42 the going starts get really tough when
6:43 it starts to become life or death for
6:45 the game because it only takes one bad
6:47 games knock knock yeah I mean for
6:49 example guys you sort of saying that
6:51 some of the bikes that are coming back
6:53 from the first grade systems don't they
6:55 don't learn after the Jersey Lions guys
6:57 that are contracted that I probably
6:59 can't really speak for them up because
7:05 yeah Arian Foster the bloke said you
7:09 came back when we were there they always
7:11 put yeah they always put in so but I
7:14 know I understand the point you're
7:17 making but why sports when you get to
7:19 this level they're extremely competitive
7:21 so you can put on some green um team
7:23 that they've never played for and and
7:27 they killing themselves trying to win so
7:29 yeah I don't think it's ever been a
7:30 problem you at these Tigers think the
7:31 guys we've had from Melbourne sort of
7:33 certainly feel part of the whole ebf
7:35 thing they actually feel a bit of a
7:36 tighter the club we try and make that
7:38 emotional bond I just thought that like
7:41 when I watched the sunny coast
7:42 get me my brother last year for example
7:44 I just thought Burley we're riding a
7:47 wave of emotion talent-wise probably
7:49 weren't the better team button that that
7:51 made in the wave of emotion the support
7:53 the you know the longevity and the
7:54 jersey the the pride for the Jersey sort
7:57 of got them over that game anyway just
7:59 just a theory
8:00 just just asking your opinion christian
8:05 wolf and the wolf brothers have a pretty
8:07 had a reputation as hard coaches hard
8:10 trainers professional set up he
8:13 obviously got you back they did it with
8:15 him over time what made you want to
8:18 leave was just more so an object like
8:23 opportunities really like I'd sort of
8:25 finished my degree and I never really
8:27 wanted to stay like I went back to towns
8:30 or to finish that and then I was always
8:32 planning on coming back here so yeah it
8:35 was more so a safe football was really
8:40 really good in Townsville I still would
8:42 have left okay but that's exported
8:45 mainly fashionable as far as a
8:46 profession guys
8:47 I would it be Danny yeah yeah how does
8:51 that process start to come into these
8:53 Tigers
8:54 well I'd actually when I first went back
8:57 to turns one that's when ships had first
8:59 started here and I had a meeting with
9:01 him between 2014 and a 2014 yeah well
9:08 actually when I first song north while
9:13 other teams was ease so I've kind of
9:19 gone a long way around if I just signed
9:20 with it if I just signed with this in
9:22 the beginning I probably would have been
9:24 here for the years how things work yeah
9:29 but sorry and then midway through 2018 I
9:35 try to I'd finished my degree and I try
9:38 to get a release to come down here to
9:40 play face cuz I think you guys had had a
9:43 few injuries in the halves yeah that was
9:45 the start of the final from but we did
9:47 have all year we basically had Melbourne
9:52 horribly yeah I think anyway basically
9:55 that was my first year days yeah being
9:58 involved and yeah the two halves would
10:00 have been Josh Rauh Thank You Brad
10:02 anymore the food car I can't remember
10:05 but I try to get the release mutters
10:08 I've been injured actually I figure
10:09 sorry I think that's what was I had been
10:12 playing a fair bit of hookah so I was it
10:14 was pretty frustrating because they
10:16 wouldn't release me by the same time
10:17 they weren't playing me so it was pretty
10:19 it's pretty frustrating because then you
10:21 watch these go on and then I'm tear to
10:23 make the grand final exactly and I like
10:25 thought I could have been a part of that
10:26 yeah sorry that really sort of made me
10:30 quite bitter about the way sort of
10:33 things ended up there obviously with no
10:35 hard feelings to the boys because
10:37 they're all really good bunch of blokes
10:39 and still mates with all of them but
10:41 that that's just part of football is
10:43 that you know it becomes a bit of a
10:46 business and when I was younger I
10:48 probably took things like that
10:49 personally but as all that I still took
10:51 personally because one you won't give me
10:53 the opportunity but two you might
10:55 release me that's got a sort of kind of
10:56 fee on that a bit of loyalty there with
10:58 and longevity of in a relationship yeah
11:01 yeah I kind of found that a bit like
11:03 being positive to be honest with you I
11:05 like you know yeah it was it was when I
11:10 first sort of went down it was extremely
11:12 sort of frustrating was amongst my last
11:15 exams and stuff but you know everything
11:18 everything happens for a reason it's all
11:21 worked out I'm here now and I'm enjoying
11:24 living in Brisbane and joined being at
11:26 ease so when you pack up the current I
11:30 mean obviously that solidified your
11:31 decision to come for 2019 your first
11:33 year with us last year yeah when you
11:35 pack the car up and I think I've two
11:38 days before preseason begins I work
11:40 right up until the Friday working with a
11:43 lot legal firm yawns all right up right
11:45 up until the Friday and then I left the
11:47 Saturday we started training on the
11:49 Monday I generally leave things
11:51 last-minute like that so I think it's
11:53 more an indication of how hard or work
11:57 you are cuz as I got to know you last
11:59 year actually we were playing a game
12:01 reserve bread over at South sac at
12:05 acacia Ridge and we went into the bar
12:07 afterwards and a bartender is Sam foster
12:11 so you know moonlighting your day job
12:15 with earning extra money still itself
12:17 because and you do like the people there
12:19 as well obviously yeah and turn the
12:20 extra casters on okay for 26 year old
12:23 God Bachelor to spend your Saturday
12:25 nights and in the extra money on top of
12:28 working full-time being a full-time
12:30 footballer playing football
12:32 that's pretty commendable sort of work I
12:34 think to have thanks for pretty sure I
12:37 just I saw that there's other things
12:40 that I want in life like you know I'd
12:44 like well the plan was this year is to
12:47 use all money we make from football and
12:49 doing the Knights in there Leagues Club
12:51 to buy a house yep so you know obviously
12:55 you know well I don't know if this is a
13:01 smart thing to do but I'm thinking of
13:03 using the harm you know we can get
13:05 access to our super if we've lost our
13:07 twenty percent so I'm sort of thinking
13:09 it may
13:10 using that even though I haven't lost
13:12 too much super as it is at the moment
13:14 but I might be trying to figure out a
13:17 little way a way to go but you're
13:20 drooling guy and obviously your next
13:21 goal your next big personal goal is to
13:23 buy your own property yes buy my company
13:25 and also know the process of going
13:29 through like the eligibility process to
13:31 be able to sit in your bar sort of
13:34 fallen in love with the states and New
13:36 York in particular sciences I want
13:39 billions maybe a bit of power yeah
13:44 excited to go over there and to try and
13:47 have a crack at being a lawyer over
13:50 their eyes when I was over there at the
13:52 end of last year got a really cool
13:53 experience I just rocked up to day like
13:56 woke up with the immense sort of the
13:58 equivalent of their Magistrates Court
13:59 and sort of talk my way in and met a few
14:01 people and I actually got to sit at
14:03 their bench with the judge that's pretty
14:05 cool yeah no I just mean strategy really
14:09 there's a lot of stories where he just
14:11 ends up right place right time which we
14:13 probably can't put tonight but that's a
14:15 pretty incredible thing to think you've
14:16 walked in yeah public yeah general
14:19 public not even a citizen I didn't have
14:21 anybody see my resume nothing obviously
14:24 just because the questions that I was
14:25 asking they I guess assume that on you
14:28 so that was pretty cool and then I got
14:30 to go meet a federal court judge one of
14:34 the ladies that I met that worked for
14:36 legal aid there she was a associate for
14:40 a judge and then I got to go meet that
14:41 judge and like it just made me more
14:43 hungry for it so that that's the plan is
14:47 to do that in a company yeah copy his
14:49 own I don't know any premise sheet
14:50 before tea and then we'll definitely be
14:53 these targets easier said than done so
14:57 and then after that I'll probably Nick
14:59 I've cracked a lot so final football
15:03 question yeah we come back the same vibe
15:07 next year and we finally get it done you
15:09 break the duck 1991 yeah 2021
15:12 yeah would that be a premiership do you
15:15 think that would be you know I mean
15:16 obviously good squad and you've got the
15:18 potential to go back there a cup like
15:20 you know because you're a better
15:21 say footie and you have this
15:23 relationship with it where you say
15:24 you're 27 28 at the time yeah no I mean
15:28 absolutely and once you give up though
15:31 yes it you can't get a go back so but
15:34 with it is the young scribe yeah I guess
15:37 it would be a hard decision to make you
15:39 win the premiership knowing that your
15:40 squad is probably still got a lot of
15:42 growth in yeah yeah exactly with some of
15:44 those young fellows we got coming
15:46 through like hunty and hey even exact
15:50 IVs and Spivey isn't always what
15:52 yourself and then he may like Dawn's
15:54 been killing it when he you say Percy is
15:57 only 20 I think Percy's my age is 26 so
16:01 I love this quote you know the senior
16:03 yeah I don't know I don't know I don't
16:07 know I I think I could sit here and say
16:09 yeah that would be but probably wouldn't
16:12 like I remember saying to myself that I
16:14 hadn't made it by the time I was 21
16:18 focus on that's definitely not happening
16:23 anytime soon
16:24 but I don't know I don't know if I'm
16:27 enjoy my football keep playing because I
16:29 guess a big thing for me it's not I
16:32 don't want to regret anything so I'd
16:34 rather have a crack at something and
16:36 fall flat on my face then to go I
16:39 should have played one more year that's
16:41 me real footballs coming to the end of
16:42 the window and the careers yeah you like
16:46 football for so long ya know I've sort
16:49 of bashed my body up fairly good so I
16:52 might not get as many views and say
16:54 someone else has so just got to make the
16:56 most of it while you can and so if
16:59 that's another couple of more years then
17:01 so be it but okay before we wrap up
17:05 you're in New York last year but the
17:08 reason Sam was in New York last year was
17:10 to run the New York Marathon along with
17:13 a family holiday but no one else in the
17:16 family right but like the whole family
17:18 was there we go
17:20 they spend a bit of time over the
17:21 holidays there yep but we've already
17:24 detailed his busy football his busy life
17:28 busy work schedule and on top of that he
17:32 trains to run a 42 kilometers
17:35 in coldest conditions pretty cool it
17:39 wasn't phrasing I mean what's the
17:42 motivation to do that is that just a
17:43 thing like you see it it's a bucket list
17:45 Sam foster way I need to do that goal
17:48 set ticket done well it's actually the
17:50 second one I've done I did want a couple
17:52 years earlier my mate and I went to New
17:54 York and we planted round gone watch him
17:57 George st. Pierre fight at Madison
17:59 Square Garden and then we're like what
18:01 else can we do in New York at this time
18:02 then it came up with marathon yeah so we
18:05 did the marathon and that was the next
18:06 day and I stuffed up the time of the
18:09 card I thought the main card started at
18:11 7:30 but the entire prelim started at
18:13 7:30 so he left there at 2:30 in the
18:15 morning
18:16 had to be up at 4:00 to catch the bus
18:18 start the marathon so this time was a
18:21 lot better like I got a good night's
18:22 sleep
18:22 yeah but it started with like a bucket
18:28 list thing and then once you do it like
18:30 anyone that likes a little bit of
18:32 running I highly recommend it because
18:33 it's an amazing feeling when you finish
18:35 it especially in a place like that like
18:37 they line this streets the end of our 42
18:40 K is and like 10 20 30 people Dean
18:43 there's bands playing and as you run
18:45 through the different boroughs you see
18:47 the difference or like pockets of
18:49 different cultures and it's just it
18:52 doesn't even feel like you're sort of
18:54 running it's just it's interesting yeah
18:58 I'm sort of obsessed what I'll keep
19:01 doing them like I wouldn't mind trying
19:02 you know and man that's probably the
19:04 next one I want to try but that's that
19:07 might have to wait until after football
19:08 because there's really no of a few
19:11 transition what's that sorry I mean it
19:13 just obviously not a guy short of future
19:15 ambition we've got building towards a
19:17 house yeah
19:18 New York bar to potentially work in the
19:21 States
19:22 yeah when we finished football yeah and
19:23 Ironman you know they're they're not
19:26 small goals they're not like I want to
19:27 run a 10k it's very commendable um New
19:33 York Marathon we just do it again since
19:34 I'm lucky yeah I went in the ballot this
19:37 year but I didn't get your once I'd say
19:40 maybe now a couple years time but we
19:43 aimed to go for about 30 minutes
19:44 for now now say about Google hi you know
19:48 I hope we hope the fans have enjoyed it
19:50 I want to finish with something that
19:54 I've thought of called the set of 6 it's
19:56 basically a fancy way of playing word
19:58 association I'm going to spit a word at
20:00 you and I want you to say the first
20:01 thing that comes back yeah free minds
20:03 Frank Rogers coach Tony guilfoyle tough
20:11 New York Marathon fun North Queensland
20:17 Cowboys home hmm
20:24 hero um that's a bit of a tough one like
20:29 I've got a few you know this sort of
20:31 people you see well sort of people you
20:34 see like I might be in court and then I
20:36 might see this barrister you know do a
20:38 plea or something and just go oh well
20:40 they're they're absolutely amazing like
20:42 I love to be like oh no it's good as
20:44 them and but obviously football probably
20:46 people like like Cooper Cronk and
20:51 Jonathan Thurston Cameron Smith oh I saw
20:54 it
20:54 wait Andrew Jones and then obviously
20:57 it's bit cliche everyone sort of says it
20:59 but my parents you know they sort of
21:02 came to Australia they had you know
21:04 nothing really like and then they had me
21:06 when they were really done and they've
21:08 done so really for you are just
21:10 everything for me and then like in their
21:12 own lives they well built their own
21:14 world and became you know quite
21:15 successful in that sites you know they
21:19 definitely are I should have finished on
21:21 that one but the last one best game best
21:23 game is in your game ever play I think
21:29 the best game I've ever played was when
21:31 I first moved to Townsville I got asked
21:34 to play in the eighteens Mal Meninga
21:36 side when I was playing in the Cyril
21:38 Connells so let's plan up a couple of
21:40 years and and I just whatever I touched
21:45 thank you got sweaty to go with my
21:47 clothes don't banana Qixing come on it's
21:50 just all coming off like he didn't
21:51 matter what I did it just still work I
21:53 think I can't remember any other ones by
21:56 that I just
21:57 remember that night yeah god when I'm
22:01 feeling yourself yeah it was like and
22:04 then I think I got some the next the
22:07 next thing so I think that was probably
22:10 it's probably not a good thing to say
22:13 because that was ten years ago say hey
22:16 the best is always yet to come thank you
22:18 for giving us your time tonight thanks
22:21 for letting everyone get a bit more
22:23 knowledge about who you are what you're
22:25 about I think the most impressive part
22:27 of your story is beyond being a football
22:29 it is so much more and mostly apart from
22:32 a good human you're driven human being
22:33 you've got you haven't that football
22:36 become your sole desire I think you
22:37 should be proud of that so we hope you
22:40 guys enjoyed the first of catching up
22:43 with our players on target talk a bit
22:44 different for this year obviously with
22:46 what's going on if you enjoyed it feel
