Core Theme
This video provides an overview of Christology, focusing on the person, nature, and role of Jesus Christ as understood in Christian theology, emphasizing his divine and human identities and his redemptive work.
welcome back in this video we are going
to be discussing Christology or the
doctrine of Christ where we will be
looking at the person nature and role of
thank you guys for tuning in in this
channel we are entirely dedicated to
providing tools teachings and resources
that are geared to enriching and
enhancing your walk with the Lord and
your study of God's Word and I'm really
excited about this particular video
because we are going to be talking about
one of my favorite people in the entire world
world
Jesus this video will present a very
broad overview of what the Bible has to
say about the person of Christ or the
Messiah as he was prophesied and
fulfilled in Scripture let's look first
at some of the key terms that we need to
know in going into this particular
doctrine first what we need to know is
that Christ and Messiah really are the
same word okay so obviously Christ is
the Greek New Testament word for
Anointed One or anointed and Messiah is
the Hebrew or Old Testament word for
anointed or Messiah quite literally
they're just synonymous and they are
connected also further if you want to go
study this out on your own they are
further connected as you will find by
doing a Septuagint study okay continuing
on this is important because we need to
keep in mind that Messiah and Christ are
both the same person and the same office
when we hear or we use the word Christ
it's not the last name of Jesus right
he's not Jesus Christ he is Jesus the
Christ and we need to keep that in mind
because when the Old Testament
prophecies were written about Messiah or
they were written about this person that
would come and pick up the mantle of or
take the office of Messiah he would come
in a very extravagant way for the
redemption salvation
and preservation of Israel very exciting
so as you have seen in just this little
bit Messiah and Christ have to do not
only with identifying a person but also
identifying a office that is filled by
one particular person who perfectly
fulfills scripture I don't have enough
time in this video to walk you through
the you know some 200 prophecies that
Jesus perfectly fulfilled at his coming
so I encourage you to go study those and
look those up on your own it's a
fascinating encouraging and truly
exciting study where you get to look
more fully at the Old Testament
prophecies about a true Savior the next
area in the realm of Christology that I
really want to talk about is that of
something called the hyper static Union
the hypostatic Union and what this has
to do was this has to deal with the
twofold nature of Jesus it deals
entirely with the fact that God is both
God and man he is equally man and God
this term came from the early church
figure Athanasius and this is really
important because he was trying to
defend this two-fold nature of Jesus
Christ let's read about that real fast
Athanasius use the term the hypostatic
union to describe the teaching that
these two distinct natures divine and
human coexisted substantively
and in reality in the single person of
Jesus Christ the aim was to defend the
doctrine that Jesus was simultaneously
truly God and truly man and this is
truly of undying importance because a
misunderstanding of Jesus's nature
can bear grave consequences for
Christians the reason why this is so
important is not only to obviously
maintain consistency in one's own
interpretation of Scripture but it's
important because a misunderstanding of
this is where a lot of cults and
heresies derive their teachings from we
have to believe and we have to
understand because it is truly very
clear in Scripture that Jesus Christ was
both fully God and fully man I want to
read to you two passages in regards to
this the first out of john chapter 1 and
the second out of Philippians chapter 2
read with me as we go John 1:1 through
2:14 says in the beginning was the word
and the Word was with God and the Word
was God he was in the beginning with God
all things were made through him and
without him was not anything made that
was made and the word became flesh and
dwelt among us and we have seen his
glory the glory as of the only son from
the father full of grace and truth
also in Philippians 2:5 through eleven
we have this have this in mind among
yourselves which is yours in Christ
Jesus who though he was in the form of
God did not count equality with God a
thing to be grasped but emptied himself
by taking the form of a servant being
born in the likeness of men and being
found in human form he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to the point of
death even death on a cross therefore
God has highly exalted him and bestowed
on him the name that is above every name
so that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow in heaven and on earth and
under the earth and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory
of God the
it is truly of undying importance as
I've said before to maintain the fact
that Jesus was both truly God and truly mannered
mannered
we cannot deviate in our understanding
of Jesus in any way let us continue on
with a look now at something theologians
called the twofold State of Christ these
two main points deal very specifically
with the state of the Messiah or the
conditions position or state that he was
required to fulfill for his prophetic
role that's what we're looking at here
when we look at his humiliation and his
exaltation so let's start first with the
humiliation of Jesus Christ the
humiliation of Jesus Christ has to do
with him lowering himself from a state
of absolute magnificence and glory to a
lower state where we see starting with
his incarnation where now he is found in
a lesser less glorious state becoming
God man the humiliation of Christ
obviously begins with the Incarnation
can be but can be summed up in four
areas which I will encourage you to
study out on your own later this deals
with Christ fulfilling Scripture by
becoming incarnate suffering dying and
being buried in relation to his
humiliation we seen a if you will a
suffering servant where he comes and he
dies for the sake and for the good of
his people
that's the humiliation of Christ the
second thing we see here which I'll just
touch on briefly because I also want to
encourage you to go and study this out
further on your own because it is truly
a glorious study
is the exaltation of Christ this facet
of Christology isolates and identifies
the state of messiah as he came to
fulfill his prophetic role and in this
regard what we see here now after him
being the suffering servant we now see
him being a king if you will or him
claiming his throne and underneath the
exaltation of Christ we see also four
main points or sub points and those are
these we see his resurrection his
ascension his session and his return in
glory Jesus now we see in his exaltation
we see his resurrection and we see his
ascension back to a state of pure
exaltation where he now is able to take
his rightful place where he was with God
the Father from eternity past pretty
exciting isn't it and I would encourage
you to look into those on your own I
pray that this has blessed you greatly
