True relaxation and effective energy release in Qigong are achieved not through passive relaxation alone, but by intelligently incorporating deliberate tension, creating a necessary contrast for balance and flow.

Many people approach Qigong with a similar idea that is to relax as much as possible.
It sounds good. It feels right. But the thing is relaxation and balance are two different things.
And it is because of this misunderstanding that many people despite practicing chong for years,
they have yet to experience the true relaxation in the Qigong exercises. Now, let me explain why
because it all boils down to contrast. And I'm going to use a familiar example which is
baduanjin. This is a Qigong sequence that has been around for centuries, and many people practice
it. Talking about relaxation, this first movement of the exercise is truly relaxing. Why? Because
it's all about something like yawning. So if you know how to yawn, you know how to do the
first movement of this exercise. But the thing is is this exercise just about relaxing? Is it just
just do that and then you'll get the true essence of the exercise? No. You have missed the
point. You have missed the most crucial part of the exercise. And let me explain why. Because you
need tension in order to get the best from this movement. All right. Let me just tell you
the sequence um which is something like this. You bring up your two arms and then you come down. All
right. So when you are bring up the arms, let me go a bit backwards so that you can see more. Um,
right. So you're relaxing but at the same time you want to apply tension. You are touching
the sky with the heel of your palms and your rib cage, your spine upward, hands up. Then
lower your arm. Don't relax yet. Squeeze your two arms. The two shoulder plate will come together
and you are going to activate a very important energy point here. All right. only then that you
relax. Now if you can do that then you'll feel the real release of your energy. Why? Because when we
are talking about the energy flow you you would need to have a contrast. The tension create
alertness. it awakes structure and it make effort more natural and effortless. So if you don't have
tension then you have no energy to release. So now I'm not talking about something philosophical. I'm
talking about universal truth. There's when there's no high there's no low. When there's
no big there's no small. So when there is no pressure, there is no responsiveness. When there
is no tension, there's no release and there's no relaxation. So if you want to get the best of
relaxation, you need to exert tension, but exert it intelligent intelligently, not haphazardly,
not carelessly, but deliberately. And that's the reason that you know when people ask me how they
can practice Qigong better I sometimes I suggest that you know you better apply some tension and
it's to their surprise. But this is really true if you want to enjoy the most from the exercise.
In fact, not just about Qigong. In anything that you do, pressure is not a bad thing. Actually, pressure
allows you to release more from you and that whether you are practicing your Qigong exercise
or whether you're making a major decision or that you know simply because you're off balance and
you want to bring back the balance. Remember that tension is not a bad thing. You have to
find the right point of tension and optimize it so that you be able to allow it to work for you.
