solid versus semi hollow we got two
great gibsons here we're gonna check
how's it going y'all my name is cooper
greenberg here at alamo music center in
san antonio texas you can find us online
at alamomusic.com
today i got some pretty cool stuff to
show you these very classic gibson
guitars we got one
the 60s standard les paul and
the es335 and looking at them you know
they're virtually identical there's uh
basically nothing different except for a
lot of things so we are going to
check them out spec by spec and then
listen to the difference
um so obviously the main difference is
you got a solid body right here and you
got a semi hollow body in the es335
a lot of what's going on on the guitar
in the electronics themselves um
pretty similar got two humbuckers these
are the t-type
calibrated humbuckers and these are the
61 humbuckers
but you got a three-way switch and you
got two volumes two tone knobs
keeping it pretty simple there obviously
these are both
somewhat modeled after the 60s
incarnations of these individual guitars
this one is the
60s standard this one is not the 60s
standard but
it is in 60s cherry and the appointments are
are
more or less based on how it would be in
the 1960s
you got a rosewood fretboard on both you
got mahogany necks on both
these ones have the vintage style tuners
these are the grover kidney style
tuners but they both have orange drop
capacitors both got a stop tail piece
and uh i think it'll be interesting to
dive into what
tonally they they sound like because
they have the same
guts more or less but you can hear the
gibson humbucker
how they react to a solid body versus a
semi hollow body
something to listen for is the resonance
i think you might hear some difference
in the sustain
between these two also how they react to reverb
reverb
we're playing through a hot rod deluxe
here with uh the eq set to 12 o'clock on
all of them with just a little bit of reverb
reverb
but i think those tones kind of come
across a little bit differently
semi-hollow if you're not uh aware
is not a fully hollow body guitar there
is a block running through this
right under the pickup so it keeps it
from being like this huge
boxy almost uh arch top style guitar
but it does have that resonance and that
mid-range punch that you expect from a
semi-hollow body
so um you know gibson these are classics
i think about blues a lot when i see
both of them so we're going to run through
through
just clean tones just so you can kind of
hear the true difference
with nothing else added and make a
choice for yourself
[Music] so
hey [Music]
so [Music]
[Music] blue
blue [Music]
[Music] hmm
so [Music]
[Music] so
ah [Music]
[Music] ah
ah [Music]
[Music]
so there you have it there's just some
sound samples for you on both these
guitars they're
very classic very no frills versions
that are based on 60s models and
i think the interesting thing to talk
about is do you pick one or the other
do you find a place in your style for both
both
i don't know about y'all i feel like the
es335 is
a very elusive guitar because i rarely
see them we rarely see them here in the store
store
so this was kind of a treat for us to
get and we wanted to make something
to kind of dive into what it really
sounds like
you can find it online on our website if
you're interested because
if you're one of the 100 people that's
called us in the last few months looking
for one we finally have it this one's
been on order for a long time
but i think a big part of it comes from
stylistically what you're going for here because
because
you can think of some classics chuck
berry bb king on the es3
335 um very blues heavy
airy open note a lot of sustain
um but you know it takes pedals really
great it it will conform to your sound
les paul there's not much else that
hasn't been said on this channel
um that i can add to that conversation
but obviously
this les paul we love the standard 50s
and standard 60s models here
um but you know if you are able if you
have the means i think
something that you can hear in our demo
is that you can play
virtually the same thing on both these
guitars they both have humbuckers they
both have
kind of the same vibe going up the middle
middle
but the body the hollow body semi hollow
body and solid
all have very different tones that you
can find within your sound
a proper way to use all of them but
they're both great guitars they they
both have the nitro finish they're both
going to age
beautifully and just more and more
resonances sustain over time as that
wood ages
so hopefully you dug it i mean i i think
that you can
hear a difference if you can't let us
know in the comments if you think i'm
lying to you but
um otherwise you know subscribe to the
channel turn on your notifications
because we're going to be making some
cooler stuff with this gibson
inventory that we've been getting in and
check out our other channels on
instagram and facebook we got some
special little things going on there
every once in a while
otherwise yeah thank you very much for
watching and have a good one
once again you guys thank you very much
