0:02 solid versus semi hollow we got two
0:04 great gibsons here we're gonna check
0:13 how's it going y'all my name is cooper
0:14 greenberg here at alamo music center in
0:16 san antonio texas you can find us online
0:19 at alamomusic.com
0:21 today i got some pretty cool stuff to
0:22 show you these very classic gibson
0:24 guitars we got one
0:27 the 60s standard les paul and
0:30 the es335 and looking at them you know
0:32 they're virtually identical there's uh
0:34 basically nothing different except for a
0:36 lot of things so we are going to
0:39 check them out spec by spec and then
0:40 listen to the difference
0:43 um so obviously the main difference is
0:44 you got a solid body right here and you
0:48 got a semi hollow body in the es335
0:50 a lot of what's going on on the guitar
0:52 in the electronics themselves um
0:54 pretty similar got two humbuckers these
0:55 are the t-type
0:57 calibrated humbuckers and these are the
0:59 61 humbuckers
1:01 but you got a three-way switch and you
1:04 got two volumes two tone knobs
1:06 keeping it pretty simple there obviously
1:07 these are both
1:11 somewhat modeled after the 60s
1:14 incarnations of these individual guitars
1:14 this one is the
1:18 60s standard this one is not the 60s
1:20 standard but
1:23 it is in 60s cherry and the appointments are
1:24 are
1:26 more or less based on how it would be in
1:28 the 1960s
1:31 you got a rosewood fretboard on both you
1:33 got mahogany necks on both
1:35 these ones have the vintage style tuners
1:37 these are the grover kidney style
1:39 tuners but they both have orange drop
1:42 capacitors both got a stop tail piece
1:45 and uh i think it'll be interesting to
1:46 dive into what
1:49 tonally they they sound like because
1:50 they have the same
1:52 guts more or less but you can hear the
1:54 gibson humbucker
1:56 how they react to a solid body versus a
1:58 semi hollow body
2:00 something to listen for is the resonance
2:03 i think you might hear some difference
2:04 in the sustain
2:07 between these two also how they react to reverb
2:08 reverb
2:10 we're playing through a hot rod deluxe
2:13 here with uh the eq set to 12 o'clock on
2:14 all of them with just a little bit of reverb
2:15 reverb
2:17 but i think those tones kind of come
2:19 across a little bit differently
2:23 semi-hollow if you're not uh aware
2:25 is not a fully hollow body guitar there
2:27 is a block running through this
2:29 right under the pickup so it keeps it
2:31 from being like this huge
2:34 boxy almost uh arch top style guitar
2:37 but it does have that resonance and that
2:39 mid-range punch that you expect from a
2:41 semi-hollow body
2:44 so um you know gibson these are classics
2:46 i think about blues a lot when i see
2:47 both of them so we're going to run through
2:48 through
2:50 just clean tones just so you can kind of
2:52 hear the true difference
2:54 with nothing else added and make a
2:56 choice for yourself
4:12 [Music] so
5:10 hey [Music]
5:39 so [Music]
6:46 [Music] blue
6:49 blue [Music]
7:14 [Music] hmm
7:45 so [Music]
7:56 [Music] so
8:26 ah [Music]
8:38 [Music] ah
8:41 ah [Music]
8:51 [Music]
8:53 so there you have it there's just some
8:55 sound samples for you on both these
8:55 guitars they're
8:59 very classic very no frills versions
9:03 that are based on 60s models and
9:04 i think the interesting thing to talk
9:06 about is do you pick one or the other
9:08 do you find a place in your style for both
9:10 both
9:11 i don't know about y'all i feel like the
9:13 es335 is
9:15 a very elusive guitar because i rarely
9:16 see them we rarely see them here in the store
9:17 store
9:19 so this was kind of a treat for us to
9:20 get and we wanted to make something
9:22 to kind of dive into what it really
9:24 sounds like
9:25 you can find it online on our website if
9:27 you're interested because
9:28 if you're one of the 100 people that's
9:29 called us in the last few months looking
9:31 for one we finally have it this one's
9:33 been on order for a long time
9:36 but i think a big part of it comes from
9:38 stylistically what you're going for here because
9:39 because
9:41 you can think of some classics chuck
9:43 berry bb king on the es3
9:46 335 um very blues heavy
9:50 airy open note a lot of sustain
9:53 um but you know it takes pedals really
9:56 great it it will conform to your sound
9:57 les paul there's not much else that
9:59 hasn't been said on this channel
10:01 um that i can add to that conversation
10:02 but obviously
10:05 this les paul we love the standard 50s
10:07 and standard 60s models here
10:10 um but you know if you are able if you
10:11 have the means i think
10:14 something that you can hear in our demo
10:15 is that you can play
10:17 virtually the same thing on both these
10:19 guitars they both have humbuckers they
10:20 both have
10:22 kind of the same vibe going up the middle
10:23 middle
10:26 but the body the hollow body semi hollow
10:28 body and solid
10:30 all have very different tones that you
10:32 can find within your sound
10:34 a proper way to use all of them but
10:36 they're both great guitars they they
10:37 both have the nitro finish they're both
10:38 going to age
10:40 beautifully and just more and more
10:42 resonances sustain over time as that
10:44 wood ages
10:46 so hopefully you dug it i mean i i think
10:47 that you can
10:49 hear a difference if you can't let us
10:50 know in the comments if you think i'm
10:52 lying to you but
10:54 um otherwise you know subscribe to the
10:56 channel turn on your notifications
10:57 because we're going to be making some
10:59 cooler stuff with this gibson
