Welcome back to Questing Beast. I'm Ben.
Today I will be playing for you a actual
play of me running the role playinging
game Mothership. Now, this is the very
first time that I have run Mothership,
even though I've played in Mothership
games a couple of times before, so it's
not going to be perfect. I'm definitely
going to be making mistakes, and it's
not supposed to be some sort of
masterass and how to run Mothership.
Rather, the reason that I'm releasing it
is because I think it is a good
demonstration of how I run an OSR style
game, especially one that is not using a
D&D derived system as most OSR games
tend to be. The game is not particularly
fancylooking. It's just what my normal
home game looks like with my local
group. So, please excuse the uh poor
production qualities. That wasn't my
goal. My goal is just to show you what
the game looks like when I'm running it.
Uh, we will be running the oneshot The
Haunting of Ipsilon 14, which is just
this one little pamphlet. And I'm
running the game pretty much just
directly off of this. One important
thing to keep in mind is that if you
want to hear my game master commentary
of what I am thinking while I am running
the game, so you can see how I'm making
the decisions that I'm making. Go down

by the company aboard the Challenger um
on a routine cargo mission. You are here
to resupply a uh
>> a mining asteroid known as Ipsilon 14.
>> And we begin with you on the ship as you
are just awakened from hypersleep. The
windows are opening up blinding light of
the nearest star. And up ahead slowly
rotating is epsilon 14. Yeah.
>> Real quick. And do androids do the
hibernation or they
>> No, you've been
wandering the floors
>> watching Lawrence of Arabia over and
over again. Uh yeah,
>> I'm a river to my people.
>> Um so yeah, you are approaching epsilon
14. You are getting in close and the
radio crackles to life and says,
"Identify yourself. This is epsilon 14.
What is your approach?
>> Greetings epsilon 14. This is the
challenger. My name is Celia. We are on
approach vector delta."
>> Approach vector delta confirmed. Um, are
you here to uh assist us?
>> Captain, are we uh captain?
>> I'll take a captain. Sure.
>> You're in charge of the ship.
>> This is true.
>> Yep. That's the job.
>> Oh, good. We did send out that dist
distress call about a week ago and we
were waiting for someone to show up.
>> Uh, we did not receive a distress call.
>> You didn't get the distress call?
>> No, we just got some cases for you.
Well, all right. You can dock. That's
We're still trying to work this out
after I one of our workers disappeared a
little while ago, but you know, we
thought we sent someone here to help
track him down, but we can use supplies.
We always need supplies out here on so
approach vector delta is fine. Uh take a
docking bay, too.
>> Is that the state of your emergency? The
missing worker
>> currently? Yes. Okay.
>> I will make a note of it in our log. Okay.

>> Thank you, Cecilia. I thought it'd be
more like I'll make a note of it in our law.

>> Now, she's kind of kind of a sultry
raspy voice.
>> Oh, man.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Clarification. It wasn't actually a week
ago. It was more like a day ago.
>> Just to correct the timeline.
>> Were we in
>> Oh, we were in for probably like a month.
month. >> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> Yes. I was right here. So, you guys are
a bit groggy. As you get closer, the
asteroid is is uh rotating to provide
some amount of gravity. Um it's been
spun up. As you get closer, you see
there is a second ship that is already
docked in docking bay one, you assume,
but docking bay 2 is open. Were you
piloting us in?
>> Uh, sure.
>> All right.
>> I don't have piling. I'll know.
>> That's fine. You don't need to roll.
It's mostly on autopilot anyway. Oh, yeah.
yeah.
>> So, you're you're docking in. You go
into doc big one and you can hear the
airlock seal and you are attached to
epsilon 14. What are you guys doing? I
hear this asteroids cursed, man.
>> Cursed with what? I
>> I don't know. I just hear things.
>> Listen, kid. Just unload these boxes and
we'll get out of here and you can get
off my back. I

>> hear the boxes are cursed, too.
I'll go start shifting boxes.
>> Okay. You're bringing out boxes. What is
everyone else doing? You're still the
airlock is still closed. You're just attached.
>> Your team's
>> I will make my way. I'll probably dock.
I'll probably do like the standard like
>> like we've landed like all the like like
checkout procedures
>> in the cockpit.
>> I'll grab our manifest and see if I can
go find who we're giving these supplies to.

>> Okay, great.
>> I'll follow. Yeah.
What are you up to?
>> I'm unloading.
>> Unloading. Okay, great.
>> So, you're opening the airlock. You see,
you hear a clunk clunk clunk on the
other side of the airlock. The standard
uh anyone in there?
>> I jump.
>> That was too early for a panic roll.
>> Uh what would be the protocol? We would know.
know.
>> I mean, you can look through like the
camera and see who's on the other side.
>> Oh, sure. They'll do that.
>> Yeah. So, there is a uh woman in her
maybe mid50s. uh kind of pretty short.
Looks very uh like she's in charge. She
kind of bears herself like she's
>> waiting for you to open this thing up.
She's got a clipboard. She's like, "Come
on, move it along here." >> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Or opens.
>> All right. You are the uh what was it?
Challenger. Is that right? That's right.
>> That's what the transponder said. That
name sounds awfully familiar. Can't
quite place it. Anyway, um yeah, bring
the boxes down the ramp here into the
docking bay. And you can see that there
is um once your the air lock is open,
there's a short little tunnel and then
it opens up into a ramp going down into
a fairly large docking bay. Uh there is
the second ship which is a little bit
further down. There's like a second ramp
to a little tunnel airlock attached to
that ship over there. Um and did you
start bringing stuff down? >> Yep.
>> Yep.
>> Okay. She introduces herself as Sonia
and says, "Well, it's great thing you
got here in time. We have been running
low. um the guy who disappeared, he was
sort of in charge of a lot of our
supplies and maybe he misplaced them. I
don't know. But like we haven't been
able to find a bunch of stuff and he
disappeared like over a day ago and
there's not a lot of places to go on a
asteroid this size. So, it's really
weird. But maybe while you're uh docked
here and refueling, you can help us just
look around and trying to figure out
what's going on here. Is that okay with
you guys?
>> Yeah, I'm down to stretch my legs.
>> All right. Fantastic.
She leads you out. You start unloading
boxes in the main area. Um
on the other side, you're now in this
large workspace. So some stuff you see
around here. We can just draw it on the
board. You can put your characters where
you are. So we got your ship, let's say,
is over here. And then we have like the
airlock going that way. And then we have
a big
area over here. There's like maybe
another airlock to another ship kind of
right next to yours over there. And over
in one corner there is uh there's a
bunch of cubbies on the wall. This is
kind of an abstract space. It's not too
scale at all. You can kind of just put
your characters where you are. There's
an area in the middle of the floor
that's a big open hole and there is a
like elevator on one side of it that
kind of goes down on tracks into the
darkness. kind of like those giant
elevators that are always in anime. You
know, they kind of go down at an angle. >> Yes.
>> Yes.
>> Yeah. And then over here you can see a
area that's just kind of a bunch of like
plastic sheeting has been put up around
a kind of boxy area. It's kind of lit
from the inside. And you see a couple
people um a couple people come from a
door over here and they start moving up
and are helping you unload.
>> Where is the stuff going as we unload
it? in a cockpit
>> right now. They're just kind of stacking
it over in the middle of the room.
They're probably going to bring over
some um stuff later to check it out and
to where
>> kind of the middle space. >> Yeah,
>> I'm backing up. Oh, go ahead.
>> I'm backing up, you know, towards this stuff
stuff
and, you know, like it's behind me and
then I'm just going to kind of like,
you know what I'm saying? Just kind of
like peek around the black plastic.
>> Oh, inside there. Yeah, I just want to
kind of see what's in there.
>> Yeah, looking around there, you can see
that it seems to be a med bay, white
plastic sheeting, some sterile lighting,
and there's some basic supplies in
there. Um, probably just for the
primitive stuff that they have here.
They don't I don't you don't know if
they have a doctor. Um, but they have
some first aid stuff basically. There's
a few doors going out of here. Uh,
there's the big elevator that's going
down over there. Um, there is, of
course, this air lock over here. And
there is a main door heading out in that
direction that a couple workers are
coming through. Um the people who are
coming through to help you unload right
now. One of them there's Sonia that you
met already. There is this uh short uh
tough looking guy uh named Ashrath. He
introduces himself. He's just helping
you shift stuff onto the big pile. And
there is a uh a woman named Dana who's
uh looks very sullen. Um, but she's
helping you move stuff, too. What are
you guys up to as this is happening? >> Uh,
>> Uh,
I'm gonna go up to Sonia. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I'd be like, "Hey, Susie." >> Um,
>> Um,
>> you evil eye.
>> Oh, it looks like appears we're not the
only ship here. Who What's What's the
other ship for? Is that just for you
guys or
>> Oh, that that is the uh Heracles. that's
been here for about four weeks or so.
>> Um, Dr. Giovani showed up. >> Oh.
>> Oh.
>> From he didn't say where he's from. He
said the company, but there's a couple
different companies. He didn't really
say which one, but he paid, you know, us
a fee that he could dock here. He said
he had to do some research and he's
been, you know, mostly holed up in there
doing stuff.
>> Oh, great. Well, hey, fellow doctor. May
have give him a little chat unless he's real.
real.
>> Yeah, feel free to knock on his door if
you want. We haven't seen him for a
little while. He's kind of keeps to
himself. Bit of a weirdo.
>> Yeah. Yeah. We all are. We all are. It
takes takes takes a weirdo, you know, to
go through all that work to get a
legitimate doctorate degree like I have.
>> What was What was the name of the ship again?
again?
>> The Heracles.
>> Also just gonna say way cooler name than
our ship. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah. >> Probably.
>> Probably.
>> And ours has big bird on it.
You know,
>> does it have like a giant like Big Bird
like the Muppet on it?
>> Well, you know Big Bird died in the
Challenger disaster. So, probably have
some sort of homage to >> what?
>> what?
>> I'm just rolling with this. I don't know
what you're talking about.
>> Do you know Big Bird from Sesame Street?
>> I remember.
>> That may not be the obser.
>> He was He was on the Challenger Space
Shuttle when it blew up in 1986
>> with the kindergarten teacher.
>> Yes, with the kindergarten teacher. He
was it a whole Sesame Street thing like
they were going to do like a
kindergarten dayes?
>> I think so.
>> And then he was on there and then he died.

>> No. Um
>> the O-rings you see
>> it was temperature they were cold.

coming from this direction. Two workers
come running into here panicked. One of
them is partially covered in blood. Says
it got Rosa. She's gone.
>> What are you guys doing?
>> Uh uh pulling out my machine gun.
>> What was that deal with that?
Um, would I have heard that inside the ship?

>> No. >> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> How do we summon you?
>> You got you guys got I assume you got a bit
bit
>> and uh I I guess we would I would
panicly run to the people that were
shouting, not knowing what to do, but I
would run over there.
>> Yeah. Everybody take one stress.
>> Even me who didn't hear.
>> No, you're fine. Back onto the show.
>> Everyone take one stress out. It's your >> stress.
>> stress. Uh

>> the workers are running over to what is
her name again? Sonia. Sonia.
>> Like we were right there. We were in the
quarters. She got picked up. We couldn't
see what was and then she just she just
got sucked into we couldn't even see it.
She was just gone. There was blood everywhere.

>> I'm a doctor.
>> Oh, thank God.
>> Don't worry. Uh
c can you take us? Can you show us?
>> Well, I'm not going back in there. It's
probably still in there.
>> You boys. Who has weapons?
>> I've got a massive machine gun.

>> That works. Okay, you guys lead the way
and I'll grab the android.
>> Do I know anything about the like just
having general spacer knowledge, you
know, having been on a lot of ships.
Have I heard of the Heracles? Do I know

>> You've not heard of the Heracles before.
It's your ship is like this old big
clunker space trucker type thing. This
thing is nice. It's all like white. It
looks like it was washed recently. It's
sleek looking. There's like this like
chrome going like along its nay cells
and stuff. It's like
>> totally out of place in a place like this.

>> Okay. So, we're doing we're we're you

>> through some crapped corridors, you end
up in what is clearly the um the cruise
quarters. There's a bunch of small rooms
kind of attached to this area, and
there's like a little common room. And
in the common room, there is like a
splatter of blood on the floor.
>> Um, but there's nothing else other than
that. It seems like a normal common room.

>> Does Does he have his gun out?
>> I do. >> Um,

>> You can see how my hands are visibly shaking.

out. Uh, what seems to be the problem.

>> How well is the room lit?
>> It's quite well lit. There's like
fluorescent lights in the ceiling. Um
there is like some couches are in the
area. There is a some vents up near the
ceiling and um there's some ceiling
tiles. I guess it's a drop ceiling
basically. And uh that's it for the
common area. Again, there's some small
rooms nearby that clearly the crew's
quarters. And there are there's a door
on one side going that way and there's a
door on the other side going that way.
>> They said that she got picked up. So, if
I look at the blood spatter and then
look directly above it,
>> it's well lit there. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Do I see any like vents passages out?
>> There is a vent in the ceiling. Most of
the um rooms in this place have vents
just for the the AC or for the
circulation of the oxygen. Yeah.
>> I have a flashlight.
>> You have a knife. >> Mhm.
>> Mhm.
>> Looks like somebody couldn't keep their
marinara down.
So like the blood the blood splatter is
sort of like in the middle of the room
and the vent is kind of like you know
over in the corner.
>> It's very weird. It's like there's just
no one there. Everything else seems
totally fine.
>> Are there any security cameras?
>> There aren't any security cameras.
>> I have a cyber diagnostic scanner.
What does that do? I
>> think it scans androids.
>> Maybe the blood is cyber.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you scan androids and
other cybernetic organisms to diagnose
any physical or mental issues.
>> Okay, thank you.
>> Um, maybe we should just go get everyone
and leave. >> Okay,
>> Okay,
>> that would be the simplest.
>> We were really blasted through this one shot.

>> That That is a thing you can do.
>> Why are we here?
>> Wait, also your ship is being refueled.
>> Oh [ __ ] How long do we have to refuel?
>> It's going to be like most of Well,
let's see. You just docked. Fueling is
pretty quick,
>> but um the people who are supposed to be
refueling your ship are currently
panicking. So, right now, your ship's
not being refueled at all. >> Okay.
>> Okay. >> Great.
>> Great.
>> There's there's my answer. I am going to
go back and help the panicking people
refuel our ship
>> because I want I want to to leave. >> Okay.

>> I don't want to be here anymore. I want
to leave. So, I'm going to go back and
start trying to refuel with the people
back here. >> Okay.

>> I want to study the blood more.
>> That's fine. What are you going to do?
>> I just I just want to inspect it. I want
to try to, you know, I don't have like a
skill at this, but I can see geometry.
Like, is it just like somebody dumped a
bucket of blood on the ground? Is there
a trajectory to it? Right. Like
>> yeah, it's mostly direction.
>> It's mostly in one big puddle with like
a little bit of arterial spray going off
in one direction.
>> But there's no like like spatter like
elongated drops. Like if someone got hit
with like a chainsaw, it'd be like all
up the walls and stuff. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Pretty localized material spreading like
drugged feet.
>> Verm can
>> differentiate from like a beast sneezing
with its mouth full. >> Yes.
There's no tracks in the blood.
>> Nope. You don't see any tracks?
>> You can investigate different things in
the room. You can move to different areas.

>> Doc, this is freaking me out, man. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Let's get back to the hanger where
there's lots of lights and people.
>> Well, somebody got hurt. I think they
probably need help.
>> They're gone.
>> And you know, it might be good to talk
to some of the other people around the
hanger. Maybe they know something. We
just got here.
>> Good advice. Let's go back.
>> It's always good to talk with people.
>> I enjoy that, too. I don't enjoy that. I
don't enjoy it. Okay, we'll go back.
>> Okay, everyone's heading back into the
main room. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, you can all head back in there.
>> And as we walk in, I'll say, "Don't
worry, everyone. Everything's going to
be okay.

>> Don't worry. Everything is fine."

>> They're all over here. the like whole
system for refueling your ship is kind
of set up over here and they're just
like screaming. One of them is kind of
crying on the floor. Um I can never
remember the person's name. Sonia is
trying to like keep everyone together
and is asking like where is everyone
else? There's more people. There's
clearly more workers on the station that
are here. Like where is everyone? We
need to go get everyone together. What
are you guys doing?
>> How can we help? How can we summon
everybody here? Well, they're either in
their uh if they were in their rooms, I
feel like they would have heard it, but
they could be in the mess hall, which is
further down.
>> There was no one in the me Oh, they were
in the commons.
>> Uh, okay. This is now the messaul.
>> Um, I want to ask Sonia, who is
generally like is the the person who's
responsible for refueling, are they
among these people that's freaking out?
>> Um, yes. His name is
um Canaro.
>> Canaro. He is a talish, muscular Asian guy.

>> I'm going to grab Canaro and I'm going
to say, "Kentaro, we need to do this
now. Let's get the ship refueled so that
we can get out of here." >> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> And I'm going to try to convince him to
come help me refuel the ship.
>> Okay. You're going to make a check to try.

>> Can I assist him and give him an advantage?

>> I think as a communications

>> That's good. All right, I'll give you an
