Good day everyone. Today I'll be talking
about something we see almost every day
here in Cebu, but rarely pay attention
to Nataly Bako Avenue. Many of us know
it simply as a long congested road we
pass through on our way to the south bus
terminal or going home to the south. But
behind this busy highway is a story of a
man whose voice influenced a generation.
In the next few minutes, I hope to show
you why this road is more than just a
landmark, but a living reminder of a
courage, media influence, and sibu identity.
identity.
Who is Natalyio Bakalo? So to understand
the importance of the avenue, [music]
we first need to know the man behind the
name. Natalya Bakasu was a sibu writer,
journalist, [music]
radio broadcaster and later a political
leader. He was born in 1908 and [music]
became known as one of the most powerful
and fearless voices in Visayas in
Mindanao during the 1960s and 1970s. [music]
[music]
He wasn't just a commentator who shared
opinions. He was a man who used media to
inspire critical thinking [music] and
awakened the Filipino people during a
time when speaking up came with risk.
[music] His life show us how one voice
when used with purpose can influence the nation.
nation.
Before social media, before television
became mainstream, radio was the
strongest form of mass communication and
Natal [music] also mastered it. He
hosted influential radio programs that
reached thousands of Filipinos,
especially in the Visayas and Mindanao.
His commentaries were bold, fearless,
and [music] thoughtprovoking.
He was known for criticizing government
abuses and corruption during the Marcus
era. At a time when many were silent or
afraid [music] to speak, Bakalo used the
airwaves to inform, educate, and empower
ordinary people. [music]
His words made people think, his voice
gave people courage, and his platform
gave the public access to truth, [music]
something that was rare during a time
when media freedom was heavily challenged.
challenged.
As communication [music]
students, this is a powerful example of
how media can shape society. It remind
[music] us that journalism and
broadcasting are not just careers. They
Because of his strong influence and
credibility as a broadcaster, Nataly
Baku eventually entered politics. His
transition from radio to public service
shows how media can inspire civic
[music] engagement.
People trusted him not because he was
famous, but because he was consistent
with his values. [music]
Even when he became a public official,
he carried with him the same principles
of truth, accountability, and service.
His career bridged journalism and
governance showing that both fields can
work together to create positive change. [music]
[music]
This is why naming a major avenue after
him is symbolic. He connected people not
only through roads but through
information, awareness and public
consciousness. [music]
Natalya Bakal's story is still relevant
especially today. We live in an era of misinformation,
misinformation,
online propaganda, and digital noise.
With social media, anyone can speak, but
not everyone uses their voice
responsibly. Lao Bakos teaches [music]
us three things. First, the power of
media should be used to inform, not to
mislead. Second,
speaking [music] up for truth matters
even when it's difficult. Third,
communication is a form of leadership.
As a future communication professionals,
we [music] hold influence whether in
journalism, broadcasting,
advertising or digital media. And with
influence comes responsibility.
So the next time you travel along Ataly
Bakalo Avenue, I hope you remember who
he was. A man who proved that one voice
can move [music] people, shape
perspectives, and make history. Thank you.
