0:00 coding on a tablet like an ipad might
0:01 seem impossible back in the day but
0:03 these days there are tools and apps out
0:04 there that really challenge this
0:06 assumption so
0:07 i wanted to see if it's possible to set
0:09 up my ipad as my dedicated machine for
0:11 everything from coding to checking
0:14 emails to making websites and even
0:16 building apps
0:17 this is something that i was always
0:19 interested in ever since i was able to
0:20 get vs code set up on my iphone to start
0:23 coding
0:23 i did that video up here you can check
0:25 out but this is taking it to another
0:27 level
0:27 it's making sure that i don't have to
0:29 switch between my computer my laptop my
0:31 devices
0:32 because that can become a hassle
0:34 sometimes and having just a single
0:36 device for everything could be really
0:37 cool
0:37 but i don't know if i can even do this
0:39 so let's find out the first thing i did
0:41 was jump on my ipad to see if there are
0:43 any existing apps
0:44 i looked up terms like code editor and
0:46 it actually came up with quite a few
0:48 the problem was that a lot of them
0:50 require you to ftp into the machine to
0:52 be able to edit i don't want that that
0:54 seems too difficult but since there
0:55 weren't any other solutions i gave it a
0:57 try i'm using an
0:58 app called coder code editor which has
1:00 ftp and a couple of other features which
1:02 we'll check out
1:03 i have over 100 websites i managed so i
1:05 created an ftp account and logged in and
1:08 i failed to log in over and over until i
1:10 figured out i had caps lock on
1:11 ftp is never my favorite thing but when
1:13 i finally got it working i was pretty
1:14 happy as any good developer the very
1:16 first thing i did was turn on dark mode
1:19 now i can actually take a look at what
1:21 it's like trying to code
1:22 on my ipad and the first thing i found
1:25 out is that
1:26 it's actually not that easy while
1:28 normally i'm pretty good at touch typing
1:30 typing on an ipad and trying to do some
1:33 code on there just doesn't work very
1:34 well
1:35 after getting frustrated i gave up on it
1:37 pretty quickly and moved over to using
1:38 the apple magic
1:40 keyboard for ipad and while this
1:42 keyboard or case is pretty much as heavy
1:44 as the ipad i'm ready to go
1:45 i'm going to give this a solid test by
1:47 actually doing some development on a
1:49 wordpress site where i'm putting
1:50 together a custom form that's going to
1:52 email some information
1:54 now when i was testing this out i did
1:56 notice a few things
1:57 the first is actually it was quite
1:59 useful to be able to code and touch
2:01 on the screen where i wanted my cursor
2:03 to go but one thing that was a little
2:05 bit annoying was switching between
2:06 windows
2:07 because it just didn't feel very
2:08 intuitive and maybe that's just because
2:11 i haven't gotten used to it just yet
2:13 i did try doing a split screen that's
2:15 where you have the browser on one side
2:17 and the code on the other
2:18 but the problem with that is that you
2:19 just don't have much real estate to work
2:22 with
2:22 and sometimes switching between each one
2:24 also has a bit of an issue where the
2:26 touch just doesn't work
2:27 but after a bit of trial and error i
2:29 sort of got it to work and i don't mind
2:31 it either
2:31 it's another day and i had a suggestion
2:33 from a friend to use my tablet to remote
2:36 into
2:36 my home computer there's great apps for
2:39 this like teamviewer and others
2:41 and having a look i noticed that
2:42 teamviewer actually has quite a few bad
2:44 reviews so i decided to try something
2:46 different out
2:47 i found one called jump desktop and this
2:50 is an application which had some really
2:51 good
2:52 five-star reviews it requires me to
2:54 install a small application on the
2:56 computer as well as the tablet but once
2:58 it's done it's pretty much a one-click
3:00 login and i'm able to
3:01 access my desktop computer immediately
3:04 it had a number of cool features like
3:06 being able to run at 60fps
3:07 over the local network it's faster and
3:10 over the internet it works pretty good
3:12 too
3:12 and in terms of having a look at this i
3:14 can immediately run up vs code and
3:16 continue my coding
3:17 exactly where i left off when i was
3:19 working from home
3:20 now i should essentially be able to just
3:22 pick up my laptop and work from anywhere
3:24 so i just went to the kitchen and gave
3:26 it a shot and when i tried it out then
3:28 yes
3:28 it was actually much better than using
3:30 an ftp program and being able to use my
3:32 computer
3:33 being able to jump desktop into my
3:36 favorite computer which is my home
3:37 computer
3:38 where i have everything set up the way i
3:40 like is awesome
3:41 then i can pretty much have vs code
3:44 running on the ipad
3:46 with virtualization on my favorite
3:47 browsers or my environment ready to go
3:49 doesn't matter where i am i'm going to
3:51 try this out over a few days and see how
3:54 i find it
3:54 and let you guys know using remote
3:57 desktop over a couple of days
3:58 at different locations to do different
4:00 tasks i found it very useful
4:02 being able to simply remote to my main
4:05 computer no matter
4:06 where i am is like having a powerhouse
4:08 in my pocket my tablet was performing
4:10 the stuff that i normally would do in
4:11 terms of building applications and
4:13 writing code
4:14 all in the fingertips of just the ipad
4:17 which normally wouldn't be able to do
4:18 this
4:19 it was fast and quick and to be honest i
4:20 don't even need a mouse the keyword's
4:22 enough because all the applications like
4:24 vs code have hotkeys enabled
4:26 and the only drawback that i was feeling
4:28 was that the screen size
4:29 was still a little bit small with the
4:30 resolution sometimes not fitting in all
4:32 the windows that i really wanted
4:34 what i learned yesterday is that
4:36 essentially this ipad while being good
4:38 is pretty much impossible to use without
4:40 a keyboard so it's looking more like i
4:42 need something that's very similar to a
4:44 laptop
4:44 but as i move forward and do more
4:47 development on it i also found that the
4:48 screen is a little bit too small
4:50 so i'm going to try and connect it up to
4:53 a bigger monitor
4:54 using this cable that i got just over
4:56 here and this
4:57 is just a usbc to hdmi cable
5:00 and what it's going to let me do is
5:02 connect up this ipad to a 49 inch
5:05 samsung screen i don't even know if this
5:07 will work but let's also try and see if
5:10 it will
5:10 so the moment of truth let's connect up
5:13 the cable
5:14 and see what happens well looks like
5:17 that worked
5:18 but not the way i expected i
5:21 did get my ipad working on my samsung
5:24 screen but the resolution wasn't quite
5:25 right
5:26 it was either too stretched or cropped
5:28 from the left and right side
5:29 but that's okay i did figure out a
5:31 resolution that works
5:33 which was just about a 2.5 k but
5:36 with that resolution i can do some of my
5:38 work now
5:39 and while this is probably an
5:42 improvement it sort of defeats the
5:43 purpose of using an ipad
5:45 when i could just use my own computer
5:48 now i've done this for about a week now
5:50 and the results are quite surprising
5:52 to be honest i thought at the very start
5:54 that i wouldn't be able to do it
5:56 i was a little bit skeptical of whether
5:58 it would even be practical
6:00 but once i figured out that i could do
6:02 remote desktop straight into my computer
6:04 then using the tablet as the main device
6:07 at least when going out was quite
6:09 practical
6:10 yes the keyboard might be missing some
6:11 of the functionality like the f1 keys
6:13 but if you do take a keyboard along
6:15 it pretty much covers everything that i
6:17 need to do that i would normally do on a
6:18 laptop
6:19 so i wouldn't even need to take my
6:21 laptop with me the only issues that i
6:23 really had were sort of like
6:25 missing out on the mouse but i don't
6:27 really use the mouse that often and
6:29 the screen size was a little bit small
6:30 but you can get used to that
6:32 yes if you're doing responsive design
6:35 then having a
6:36 browser cannot be done in a chrome
6:39 window
6:39 or a safari window on the ipad but if
6:41 your remote desktop in
6:43 then you basically have full control
6:44 with devtools so all of those features
6:47 come across
6:48 and you can start using and programming
6:50 and coding just like you would normally
6:52 the other part is that with the ipad i
6:55 did like the ability of using the touch
6:57 screen
6:57 to be able to tap where i'm writing my
6:59 code or check what i'm doing on the
7:01 browser
7:02 so that actually did improve my workflow
7:04 a tiny bit and that was a surprising
7:05 thing i didn't think i'd be doing
7:07 but otherwise this was a heaps fun
7:08 experience let me know if this is
7:10 something that you guys enjoyed because
7:13 if it is i'd love to do more tests like
7:15 this to
7:16 try out how we can test the boundaries
7:17 of how we traditionally do coding and
7:19 maybe mix it up a little bit otherwise
7:21 i'll see you in the next one
7:23 see ya
