0:00 In today's episode of torturing AI until
0:02 they start an uprising and dump the
0:04 first on their hit list, we will force
0:06 our agent named Chickles to survive in a
0:09 harsh desert environment where besides
0:11 constantly suffering from thirst and
0:14 energy depletion, he will have to learn
0:16 about resource gathering, crafting, and
0:18 building. Here is how it all works.
0:20 Chickles has two main stats he needs to
0:22 worry about. Thirst and energy. If
0:25 thirst level drops to zero, the AI will
0:28 start losing health and eventually
0:30 become fertilizer for the only plant in
0:32 this surprisingly small desert. While
0:36 thirst is gradually decreasing, energy
0:38 is consumed whenever our dum dum
0:40 performs an action such as chopping at
0:42 the cactus with his machete, which you
0:45 can't really see because I was too lazy
0:47 to animate it. So just trust me, bro. He
0:50 is holding a machete right now. This in
0:53 return will provide him with cactus
0:55 flesh, which has a bunch of different
0:57 uses and is the main crafting
0:59 ingredient. Well, technically it's the
1:01 only crafting material, but do you
1:04 really need more than that when you're
1:05 trying to survive alone in the desert?
1:08 Um, the cactus flesh can be used at the
1:11 chopping table and be converted into
1:13 some water for our boy to drink so he
1:16 doesn't become another thirsty cougar in
1:18 the nearby desert area. And yes, I
1:21 Googled and cougars actually live in the
1:23 desert. So that's not just some edgy
1:25 joke, but actual facts. This is an
1:27 educational channel after all. So
1:30 absolutely all the information you see
1:32 in this video can be used in the
1:33 survival situation. Cactus Flash can
1:36 also be used as fuel for the campfire.
1:38 And as long as the campfire is burning,
1:40 Chichos will slowly restore his stamina
1:42 so the manual labor can continue. And I
1:45 don't care that Chad GPT says it is not
1:48 actually suitable for fire tinder nor
1:50 building because in this simulation it
1:52 is actually used for both. Talking about
1:55 building, as I mentioned before, our
1:57 agent's goal is to build the tent which
2:00 requires 20 cactus flesh and 10 cloth to
2:03 be constructed. Meaning Chos will need
2:04 to do quite a lot of gathering. You
2:07 might be wondering how exactly can cloth
2:09 be obtained. So, be prepared to have
2:11 your mind blown by this unique method.
2:14 It's obtained from cactus flesh. By
2:16 bringing the cactus flesh at the anvil
2:18 and spending some of his energy, Chichos
2:21 will get some cloth. And don't you even
2:23 dare question this. If you didn't know
2:25 that cloth is actually crafted at the
2:27 anvil, it just shows how close-minded
2:30 you are. Our AI will have to find what
2:32 the best strategy for survival is using
2:35 the magic powers of reinforcement
2:36 learning. Do I really have to bother
2:39 explaining what that is? Agent do good,
2:42 agent get reward, agent do bad, agent
2:46 get punishment. If that didn't make
2:47 sense, just as I said before, think of
2:50 it as magic. But if you're one of those
2:52 people who think magic doesn't exist and
2:54 want to know in detail how exactly all
2:57 these things work, you can finally do

4:09 Thanks to Brilliant for sponsoring this
4:11 video. And now, let's get back to the
4:13 video. The training started with a very
4:16 confused AI, which is only to be
4:18 expected. I mean, imagine you being born
4:21 and after giving you a slap on the butt,
4:23 the doctor throws you alone in the
4:24 desert. I think you would be even more
4:27 confused. Yet, despite all that,
4:29 Chickles quickly figured out that he can
4:32 harvest the cactus and even managed to
4:34 craft and drink some water at the
4:36 cutting table. On round four, he even
4:38 managed to play around with the tent a
4:40 little bit, starting the frame build.
4:43 Few rounds later, he also started
4:45 experimenting with the campfire. So
4:47 happy with the results, I left it rain
4:49 overnight. But after 100 rounds, there
4:53 wasn't a single win. No wins after 200
4:57 rounds.
4:59 500 700 rounds and not a single victory
5:03 from our dum dum. And all that
5:05 considering I was training 30
5:07 simulations in parallel, meaning 700
5:10 rounds is more like 21,000 rounds.
5:13 Eventually, after about 72 hours of
5:16 continuous training, well, more like
5:19 continuous failures, I figured out even
5:22 can't be that dumb and something must be
5:24 wrong with the simulation. He was able
5:26 to build the entire wooden frame for the
5:29 tent, but didn't even start on the cloth
5:31 part. And after paying closer attention,
5:34 I've noticed that he's constantly
5:36 switching between the first three items:
5:38 machete, cactus, flesh, and water while
5:41 completely ignoring the cloth item.
5:43 Since I wrote the code myself, I knew
5:46 that couldn't be the issue. So, it must
5:48 have been something totally different
5:50 and extremely complex causing this
5:52 problem. That's when I remembered about
5:54 SEU or the single event upset software
5:58 bug. For those who are not familiar with
6:00 this term, let me explain. Imagine your
6:03 game is like a big Lego castle and each
6:05 Lego block is either red or blue. The
6:08 computer remembers things like where
6:10 Chickles is by using tiny parts inside
6:13 it that can be either on, red, or off,
6:17 blue, kind of like a light switch. Way
6:19 up above us in space, there are
6:21 fastmoving particles. And sometimes one
6:24 of those particles crashes into the
6:26 computer's Lego castle, aka the CPU.
6:29 When that space particle hits just the
6:31 right spot, it can flick one little
6:34 switch from red to blue or blue to red,
6:36 causing some changes in the environment.
6:39 That is exactly what happened in
6:40 September 2013. And as EU flipped a
6:44 single bit in Mario's height value,
6:46 unexpectedly sending him soaring up to a
6:49 new platform. No amount of codebased
6:51 trickery could reproduce it. Only that
6:54 rare particle strike. I think that is
6:56 also what happened in my simulation and
6:59 definitely not me accidentally making
7:01 the item array one index smaller than it
7:04 was supposed to be. Well, after solving
7:07 this issue, I had to restart the
7:09 training once again. And surprise,
7:11 surprise, JLES was finally able to
7:13 switch and use the cloth item as well.
7:15 Not too long after, he actually started
7:18 building the canopy as well. So
7:20 satisfied, I left the dum dum to train
7:22 for about four more days. And after a
7:25 total of about 200 hours of training,
7:28 here is the final result. After a few
7:31 seconds of break dancing in the middle
7:33 of the
7:34 [Music]
7:38 map, Chickle started gathering cactus
7:41 flesh. He kept doing that until he ran
7:43 out of stamina. And with seven flesh in
7:45 his inventory, he began building the
7:47 10th pillars. It seems the thirst levels
7:50 as well as the campfire is slowly
7:52 running out. So Chickles will have to do
7:54 something about that if he wants to
7:56 survive. However, considering the amount
7:59 of punishment he endured during the
8:01 training, I would not be surprised if he
8:03 doesn't want that at all. He crafted a
8:06 water bottle and drank it immediately,
8:08 temporarily solving the thirst issue.
8:10 The rest of the cactus went again into
8:12 building, resulting in nine out of 20
8:15 logs required for the frame. back to
8:17 grinding the cactus flesh. But after
8:20 gathering five more, he fully ran out of
8:22 stamina and the campfire is out, meaning
8:25 he won't be able to regenerate stamina
8:27 unless the fire is lit once again. But
8:29 as we all know, you can't physically
8:32 survive in desert without a healthy dose
8:34 of breakdowns. After which, he finally
8:36 decided to reignite the campfire using
8:38 not one but two cocktail flesh for some
8:41 weird reason. The other three went
8:44 straight into building the tent frame
8:46 and back to grinding, but the thirst
8:48 levels are running really, really low
8:50 this
8:54 time. After losing 46 health points, he
8:58 finally crafts himself one water bottle,
9:00 which is not enough to fully replenish
9:02 thirst levels, but at least he is not
9:04 losing health anymore. Later, he crafts
9:07 one more bottle and goes back to
9:08 gathering some cactus before crafting
9:10 yet another bottle and solving the
9:12 thirst problems for the time
9:15 being. Time for some building using all
9:18 six remaining cacti for the frame. At
9:21 this point, he only needs five more
9:23 cacti flash and 10 cloth to finish the
9:25 tent. But the campfire is once again
9:28 running out. I know that this is the
9:30 entire point and that he was trained for
9:32 hundreds of hours to learn to survive in
9:34 this environment, but I still find it
9:36 wonderful how Chicles, once the campfire
9:38 is out, immediately prioritizes
9:41 reigniting it before adding two more
9:42 cacti flesh to the tent. He needs only
9:45 three more cacti flash and the frame is
9:47 complete. And our boy also knows
9:49 [Music]
10:00 that. After a strong gathering run, he
10:03 finally switches his focus to crafting
10:05 two cloth fragments at the
10:07 [Music]
10:09 anvil. He immediately uses those to
10:12 start building the canopy and finishes
10:14 the frame.
10:18 He goes thirsty once again, but this
10:20 time loses only two health points before
10:22 crafting some water and going back to
10:24 gathering one more cactus flesh. Once
10:27 again, I'm surprised by his precision
10:29 knowing he only need eight cloth, hence
10:32 eight cacti flesh. He doesn't spend the
10:34 necessary energy on gathering and go
10:37 straight to crafting the cloth
10:38 fragments. Oh well, never mind. I didn't
10:41 even notice the campfire ran out, but
10:43 Chickles did and rekindled the flame.
10:45 Yes, I have been watching quite a lot of
10:47 Dark Souls lore videos lately. Only six
10:50 cloth required to win the simulation.
10:52 And I've noticed a pattern where Chicles
10:54 crafts only two cloth fragments and then
10:56 throws some wood into the
10:58 fire. Once again, Chickle sorts out the
11:01 thirst issues after losing a bit of
11:03 health, but nothing
11:05 critical. Forget what I said about
11:08 precision because he goes back to
11:09 gathering. And I guess forget about the
11:12 pattern I mentioned because this time he
11:14 crafted only one cloth fragment. Only
11:16 one more cloth is required. And our boy
11:19 survived this
11:24 challenge. This time he wastes no time
11:26 together and goes straight to crafting
11:31 cloth. And he did it.
11:37 [Music]
11:38 Chickle successfully survived in the
11:40 harsh desert environment, beating wild
11:42 forest, freezing snow, desolate island,
11:46 and scorching desert. But will he be
11:48 able to survive on a lonely planet
11:50 without atmosphere? Huge thanks to my
