social Linguistics is language and
society and you can either focus
principally on the language side or on
the society side and here we we look at
both so when it comes to uh uh the
language side we look at how
pronunciation grammar vocabulary
vocabulary
structural parts of language change and
Vary we look at how they change and Vary
according to the people that you're
talking to according to the situation
you're in the place you're from your
social class your gender the historical
period that you're uh living in the
point is really that
language provides an amazingly dense set
of clues about uh a person's social life
and their biography but you need need
the uh uh the technical skills to know
how to uh uh how to read those those
Clues and that's something that we
provide in in the degree program so
that's the that's the kind of language
side of of sociol
linguistics on the society side we look
at the role that language plays
in Social processes okay so we take
social questions like why does certain social
social
groups repeatedly seem to do worse in
education that we know it's got nothing
to do with
intelligence or question like you how do
uh families and commu communities cope
with with the effects of globalization or
or
um do do social media New Media really
make a profound difference the way we
live big questions like that which we
can approach through Language by for
example going and looking at how people
use language at school and at home and
uh you know is is there a Gap here is
the gap a problem or we could uh uh we
could go and look at language patterns
as they're used in multilingual
neighborhoods or for the the New Media
question we could say well you know how
are New Media used in Clin or
classrooms before and after the
introduction of uh uh particular
Technologies the point really is that
that language doesn't just uh reflect
Society it it actively shapes it and uh
uh looking closely at the way in which
people use use language you can say that
you're you're really looking into the
DNA of social life picking up on the on
the small details that that that build
up to the um to the big effects that he
hit the headlines and of course one
effect of that is that if you can figure out
out
how things
tick uh in in in everyday practice then
you've got a better chance of actually
intervening and changing everyday social
life for the
better so those are the two the two
strands that we cover in our um uh ba
program the two strands of sociol
linguistics and they run concurrently
from year one right the way through to
year three and all in all I think that
that that um social Linguistics uh uh
offers a a a very powerful window not
not just on communication but also on
social life uh more generally and I
think what we hope to do teaching uh
sociol Linguistics is to
um produce people who are who are
sharper observers better interpreters of
what they uh hear and experience at work
