Good morning everybody. Please do sit.
very warm welcome to all of you gathered
here today and of course to those of you
watching us at home either live or
later. Uh I know there's an increasing
number of people who join us uh here
live now who are watching us and it's a
great joy especially to welcome you. We
do apologize that we weren't able to
live stream last week but uh there was
nobody here who was able to set up. So,
we aim to be all the better today.
I've got loads of notes. I am sorry, but
I'll whiz through them as quickly as I
can. First of all, a message from Ellen
thanking you very much. every single
member of the congregation who donated
towards the faithly community present
collection and she said she and they
really appreciate your generosity and it
means that the children and elderly and
faith will wake up on Christmas day with
a wonderful selection of presents from
Santa. So, thank you very much to all
who gave gifts for that and also to
those of you who gave I think probably
even more than ever gifts to the Glasgow
children's holiday scheme. Douglas came
along to the Wednesday lunch for a
Christmas party and I think he actually
managed to take just about all of the
gifts. I don't quite know how it took
them all because there were a lot but uh
he was very very grateful and asked
particularly um he asked me to pass on
his thanks and all the people who will
be able to receive some lovely gifts and
also uh we uh give money uh money from
the launch group in particular and we've
been able to add to the gifts uh £1,100
pounds uh to their work. So that's very
generous and thanks to all those people
There's quite a lot of dates for your
diary and I remind you that tomorrow
morning there is the funeral here of
Colin Campbell. That's at 10:00. Uh
Colin's family and his wife may have
said they'd be delighted to see as many
who are able to
tomorrow. I know Colleen and May were
very hard workers both at St. Columbus
and here and I know many of you will
know them and we pray for May and the
family at this sad time. So the funeral
is here tomorrow at 10:00
tomorrow evening. Uh a last reminder
that the outdoor community nativity will
be taking place. That's from 6:00 and it
will be around the church and the
grounds at new factory. It's one of
those things that can go on even if the
weather's bad and I think that means
that it can be held inside rather than
you've got to wrap up warm and have
umbrellas. But it's from 6:00 and you
don't have to be there at 6. You can go
anytime from 6 to 7:30 and there's an
opportunity to walk around a little
trail and hear the story of the
nativity. So that's tomorrow evening
from 6.
On Tuesday we have our final Advent
study in the hall at 2. Then on
Wednesday we have a 10:00 morning
prayer, 10:30 said communion, 11:00
refreshments, and then the final
conflict night prayer for Advent at 7:00.
Next Sunday morning, our usual 9:00 said
communion and 10:30 sun communion. And
then in the afternoon at 4:30, we're
joining New Patrick and Bear Stone Cross
for our annual carol service. Our choir
will be taking part. Some of us will be
reading and it's always a great event
sharing together.
That's at 4:30 next Sunday afternoon in
On Thursday, can I remind you of the
candle lit a candle light suare with
Sarah Green leaping? That's Susan and
John's daughter. And that's going to be
a concert in German Hall from 5:00.
And that's a trio soprano piano and
cello plus mold wine and mint spies.
Louise will be here briefly after the
service just to uh if you haven't got
money I know she'll be very happy just
to know you're coming and you can pay at
the door but do join us on Thursday
And I'm very sorry. And uh David was
here with me on Thursday. We had a
really fantastic nursery school nativity
play 18 adults, 35 children and from
Maxstone Nursery over the road and uh it
was a terrific nativity. I'm delighted
to say they love the church so much
they're going to come and do some other
things here which is a great contact to have.

>> Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
When John heard in prison what the
Messiah was doing, he sent word by his
disciples and said to Jesus, "Are you
the one who is to come, or are we to
wait for another?"
Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John
what you hear and see. The blind receive
their sight. The lame walk. The lepers
are cleansed. The deaf hear. The dead
are raised. And the poor have good news
brought to them.
And blessed is anyone who takes no
offense at me.
As they went away, Jesus began to speak
to the crowds about John.
What did you go out into the wilderness
to look at? A wreath shaken by the wind.
What then did you go out to see? Someone
dressed in soft robes. Look, those who
wear soft robes are in royal palaces.
What then did you go out to see? A
prophet? Yes, I tell you. And more than
a prophet.
This is the one about whom it is
written, "See, I am sending my messenger
ahead of you, who will prepare your way
before you. Truly, I tell you, among
those born of women, no one has arisen
greater than John the Baptist.
Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven
is greater than he.
Give thanks to the Lord for his glorious gospel.
>> I speak in the name of God the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
A woman was searching for the perfect
Christmas card for her husband and she
came across a promising one. On the
outside it read, "Sweetheart,
you are the answer to my prayers."
Then she turned to the inside
which was inscribed, "You're not what I
prayed for. Exactly. But apparently you
For thousands of years, the Jewish
people had been praying for a Messiah,
a deliverer who would conquer their
enemies and establish a kingdom of righteousness

and might. Their deliverer would be
powerful, a warrior and a king. And
through his power, the Jews would again

friends.
He claims to be the long awaited Messiah
who has come to set up a very different
kind of kingdom.
And so we can forgive even Jesus
strongest supporters for asking,
"You're the answer to our prayers." Really?
Really?
John the Baptist had also been praying
for and preparing for the Messiah his
whole life.
John been doing this with a hard
criticism of the ruling religious
establishment and the stern call to
repentance for the people.
John's idea of Jesus was then this
warrior type someone who would like John
preach fire and brimstone. John had even
said the coming Messiah would baptize
his hear us with the Holy Spirit and
In today's gospel, John is in prison.
John probably knew his days were
numbered and he was hearing stories of
the conduct of Jesus whom he had thought
was the Messiah,
his cousin.
the Messiah.
And in preparation, he had given his own
life to preparing the way.
He had heard though that this Messiah,
far from preaching hell, fire and
brimstone, was doing works of mercy.
John was confused.
So he sent some of his disciples to ask
Jesus if he was the one that was
promised, if he was the one who was to
come. And in response to John's
question, Jesus could quite simply have
said, "Yes, I am the one."
But he doesn't do that.
Neither does he evade the question.
Jesus does what he so frequently does
when asked a question. He throws it back
The possibility of salvation for Israel
and for us today perhaps seems remote
because we're looking for the wrong kind
of salvation.
Perhaps we all want a child's kind of
savior, a parent who will make things
all better without effort on our part.
Or perhaps we want a flashier, more
global kind of savior, as those did in
Israel who wanted a warrior to throw off
Jesus answer is different to expectations.
expectations.
Really, to hear it, we need to let the
answer to the world's ills be thrown
back at us as Jesus threw the answer
back to John.
Look and see what a difference it can
make in your life to try the slow way of
taking personal responsibility and
living out the Savior's way of life.
We may not be able to perform Jesus
miracles in the way he did, but we can
work to bring about the prophets visions
of a better world where those in need
are ministered to them and the good news
of a loving God is made known by word
and action.
This is a slower way.
Its results take time and energy.
It requires the patience that epistle of
James talks about the patience of the
farmer waiting for the crops to grow.
A farmer would be silly to pull up the
plants to see how the roots are doing.
The slow way requires that same patience
of each of us.
James also tells us what we are to do
while we wait for the precious crop.
Strengthen our hearts for the coming of
the Lord and not grumble against one another.
Jesus answered John as God answers us.
Not as John expected Jesus to answer him.
him.
So it is in our prayers and our expectations.
expectations.
We come to Jesus with our agenda
It is interesting to note that Jesus
never directly answers John's question.
Are you the expected one or shall we
look for someone else? He never gives a
straight yes or no.
Jesus could have pointed to the hundreds
of biblical prophecies that his life had fulfilled.
fulfilled.
He could have performed some instant
dazzling miracle that would have
silenced all John's dads.
Instead, Jesus announced, "Go and tell
John the things that you have heard and see.
see.
The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers
are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead
are raised up, and the poor have the
What does that tell us about his priorities?
priorities?
All of his miracles seem to involve
restoration and compassion
just as they are today. The death, the
blind, and the lame were kept outside
the mainstream of society.
Jesus didn't just hear those people. He
restored their place in society.
And these answers demonstrate Jesus'
compassion for the least and the lowest.
They remind us that Jesus came for the
hurting, the helpless, the overlooked
people of society.
And that's always a good thing to
remember at this time of the year when
perhaps our greed and our materialism
are given free reign.
Never confuse our society's celebration
of Christmas with the character of
Jesus. The two are as different as day
I think we can assume that John the
Baptist discovered what Jesus was really
all about.
As he sat in his prison cell, stripped
of all the things we think are necessary
for life, he discovered the one most
important thing, hope.
hope.
John glimpsed the hope that the Messiah
had come to set up an eternal kingdom, a
kingdom of justice and mercy, compassion
and healing, a kingdom that was for all people.
people.
No, it wasn't exactly what the people
had been praying for.
Isaiah,
Malachi, John the Baptist, and all the
other prophets of the old covenant
desperately looked forward to the new
covenant, the new promise that Jesus
brought in.
As those who have received this new
covenant through God's undeserved favor.
We should be bowled over with gratitude
and excitement because in God's eyes, we
have a greater status. Not because we
are better people than John was, but
because God sees Jesus in us with all
his beauty and perfection.
Jesus whom we celebrate this Christmas
and indeed every day is the Messiah, God
and man, a baby sent to earth to die in
our place on a cross.
We are enormously privileged to have had
our eyes opened by Jesus, to be enabled
to walk in God's way, to have heard the
good news, to have been raised from
spiritual death to life lived in a right
relationship with God.
Let us then respond to that free gift.
