Hello friends, welcome back to my
channel MKkesh English. Friends, in this
video I'll summarize a very interesting
story, the doctor's word written by the
famous Indian writer Arinarayan. So
let's know very briefly about the story
in the very beginning. Arinarian's short
story, the doctor's word is about Dr.
Raman a truthful and straightforward
doctor who always tells his patients the
reality of the condition. He never tells
lie. He says that okay you are suffering
from this issue. You may you may be you
may continue to live or you may die.
Right? He's so straightforward.
He never sugar quotes because he
believes the false hope cannot save
lives. But one day when his dearest
friend Gopal falls seriously ill, the
doctor faces a moral dilemma. Should he
tell his friend the harsh truth or
should he offer hope to keep his spirit
alive? So that is the theme of the
story. Let's start the the discussion
the the discussion of the story in detail.
detail.
So here we begin. Dr. Raman was one of
the most respected doctors in Malguri.
People usually called him only when the
patient was very close to death. So he
will be called only when he he he used
to be called only when the patient was
about to die. His consultation fees was
very high in those days that is rupees 25.
25.
But most importantly, people felt that
calling him means the case was already
very very serious. So Dr. Raman was
known for blunt truthfulness. He never
sugarcoated the things. If a patient was
going to die, he will say very directly
that he will be no more in the few days.
His words carried the weight of a
verdict rather than just an opinion. He
believed that pleasant lies cannot save
lives. So he always told the harsh
truth. However, if there was even the
smallest hope, he would fight tirelessly
to save the patient as if he as if he
was struggling with the yama, the god of death.
death.
So Dr. Mr. Raman's best friend was
Gopal, a man he had known him since his
kindergarten, since his childhood. They
shared a deep bond of 40 years. From the
past 40 years, Gopal and Dr. Raman have
been the best friends.
Because of work and family
responsibilities, they could not meet
often. But whenever that they used to
meet, they enjoyed meals, movies and the
long conversations.
their f their friendship was very
strong, unchanging and deeply valued by
both of them. So Dr. Gop Dr. Raman Dr.
Raman was busy with his medical practice
and he had not realized that Gopal had
not visited him for the over 3 months.
So he was too busy with his talking with
the patient, dealing with the patients.
So it's been 3 months both of them have
not yet met. One day Gopal's son came
nervously to the clinic and he said his
father was ill. That very afternoon
after finishing surgeries Dr. Raman
rushed to Li extension where Gopal used
to live. So what's the place of the
name? Lai Liy Li extension where Gopal
used to live. Okay. Dr. Dr. Raman was
shocked to see Gopal bedridden for over
a month and a half. He asked who had
been treating him and learned it was a
little known some local doctor. So he
asked that who has been treating you for
a long time. It's been one and a half
months. So he was told that some local
doctor was treating Gopal.
Dr. Raman was angry that his own closest
friend's illness was hid hidden from
him. He was so angry that nobody told
him that his friend Raman his friend
Gopal is suffering from so and so
disease and not recovering.
The family explained that they didn't
want to trouble him because he was
always so busy.
Dr. Raman immediately he took control
and he sterilized his instruments. He
gave him some injections. He called in a
nurse and assistant and finally he
performed an operation. So Dr. Raman
finally has operated Gopal.
Now after the operation Raman and his
team anxiously start started to observe
the condition of Gopal. By evening Gopal
stood and he opened his eyes. So he got
consciousness. By evening the assistant
was optimistic and she was saying that
the pulse had improved but Dr. Raman
with his vast experience he was not
convinced having seen Gopal's condition.
Dr. Raman was not convinced he knew it
was only temporary flash of strength
that often comes before death. He
privately predicted that Gopal would not
live past 2:00 a.m. After 2:00 a.m. he
will die. Still he stayed by the bedside
fighting against hope and despair.
Then Gopal's wife was nervous. She was
very desperate for the truth.
She kept asking Dr. Raman if her husband
would survive or not. The doctor avoided
a direct answer but advised her to give
glucose and brandy every 40 minutes. See
this is worthy. This is for the very
first time this doctor is not revealing
the truth otherwise he has always told
the previous patients that you are about
to die. He always used he never used to
say any lie but this time he's
hesitating because he's his own friend
the best friend. So he he advised that
it's better you give you can give gopal
glucose and brandy every 40 minutes.
Finally unable to bear the suspense she
begged him in the kitchen to tell the
truth. She told I request you please let
me know whether he would survive or not.
Raman who was unable to lie. He avoided
answering directly which confirmed her
worst fears.
Her loud whailing disturbed Gopal.
So the doctor quickly shut the kitchen
door to prevent the sound from reaching
him reaching him. So when when his wife
came to know that yes Gopal will not
live for long time and she starts crying
and this doctor closed the kitchen door
so that Gopal should not know the reality.
reality.
Then Gopal sensing the seriousness of
the condition Gopal slightly he just
assumed that something is wrong and he
whispered to Dr. Raman and he said dear
am I dying
don't hide the truth from me I must know
how long I have I need to sign my will
before it is too late so this question
Gopal said to Dr. Raman
Gopal requested begged the doctor to
bring the dispatch box which has the
will and to act as the witness. He said
that you become the witness. Bring that
box. The box has the will and Gopal was
deeply worried that without the will his
wife and children would suffer because
of greedy relatives like Subaya and his
gang. That's the reason that he was in
hurry to sign the bill to sign the will
for the first time in his life Dr. Raman
felt utterly helpless
first time. If he told the truth, Gopal
would sign the will but lose all hope
and probably die that every night. Look
at the dharm sut. He says that if I tell
the truth that he's going to die, he he
will sign the will immediately and he
will lose all the hope and that very
night only he will die. Otherwise,
what's the time? Till 2:00 a.m. he can
be alive as per Dr. Raman's expectations.
expectations.
If he lied and gave him courage, suppose
he lies and he gives him courage, it
might save his life, but the will would
remain unsigned,
leaving his family's future in danger.
Look at the condition here. Very
hypothetical condition here.
Now what to do?
So he was torn between truth, duty,
friendshipness and friendship and
compassion. So finally Dr. Raman sat in
his car at midnight and he was unable to
decide. Finally the solution is here. If
my word can save his life, he shall not
die. The will, the will be damned. He
says that if my word can save his life,
you shall not die. The will be damned.
That was his final word. So it was the
first time he chose to act against his
nature and he told a lie that don't
So returning to Gopal's bedside, Dr.
Raman leaned close and he said firmly.
He said to Gopal, "Gopal don't worry
about the will. Now you are going to
live. Your heart is absolutely sound.
Don't worry."
Hearing these words, Gopal felt immense
relief. A glow spread over his face. He
believed his friend completely and he
fell asleep peacefully.
Right. Dr. Raman quietly left still
convinced he would not see Gopal alive
in the morning. He said, "Okay, last
time I'm just seeing my friend. Tomorrow
after 2:00 a.m. he will die." Right? He
even instructed his assistant to be
ready with an injection in case the
death struggle was too painful. He said
to his assistant, "Be prepared for the
injection. If there's very painful death
all right done then what happens?
Miracle happens. Next morning Dr. Raman
rushed to lolly extension
expecting the worst. He came in the
morning keeping in mind my friend is no
more. To his amazement amazement he
found Gopal alive awake looking stronger.
stronger.
His pulse was steady. His heart was
functioning normally.
The miracle had happened. Gopal had
survived the night. That's a miracle
happened here. And Dr. Raman told his
wife cheerfully that her husband would
live to be 90. Don't worry till the age
of 90 nothing will happen. Your husband
is all right. Punjan was something like
this. Later when the assistant asked if
this was really true, the doctor
replied, "Yes." He has turned the
corner. How he survived this attack will
remain a puzzle to me all my life.
Doctor said yes. How my friend survived
this attack will remain a puzzle to him
for the rest of the life.
And finally, what is the message? This
is how the story ends here. What's the
message from the story? The message is
here. A doctor treats not just the body
but also the mind and spirit. Truth is
important but sometimes a lie spoken
with love and hope can save a life.
Friendship and human emotions can be
stronger than professional principles.
So in the end the story shows that Dr.
Raman's only lie became his greatest
truth. It saved his best friend's life.
So this is how the story the doctor's
word ends here. And this is how I have
tried my best to summarize the story.
