my name is ed coleman
i go by bill affectionately known in the
church by my wife as a troublemaker
because if there's something in the
bible that i don't understand i question it
it
and there's quite a bit that i don't understand
understand
we know more about the bible today
than the church in the first century
knew they didn't have the bible they
didn't have the new testament
they had the apostles they had the holy
but they didn't have the new testament
about 400 years before they got it
so we know today by
the discovery of the dead sea scrolls
and by archaeology
we know more today
about the bible about the life of christ
than they knew in the first century [Music]
[Music]
now the jews in the first century
knew of two ages it was this age the age
in which they lived in the mosaic age
age
and then the messianic age the age of
the messiah would come
where there would be peace judgment
but that was the age that they were
looking for and we're going to get into
there's some things that i'm going to go
over that will help
give you a better understanding [Music]
[Music]
of some of the things that i consider
controversial or complicated [Music]
[Music]
this age is to come
they also refer to it as the already
ephesians 1 chapter 1 verses 13 and 14
is an example of some of the things that
it says the people were given the spirit
as a down
payment and you also were included in
christ when you heard the message of truth
truth
the gospel your salvation when you believed
believed
you were marked in him with the seal the promised
promised
holy spirit who is a deposit guarding
our inheritance until the redemption
of those who are god's possession now
does that make sense that doesn't
doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me
in order to prove that you're going to
get the promised possessions
something that was promised to you but
what was promised to them
salvation righteousness [Music]
[Music]
eternal life
second coming of christ these were some
to prove that they were going to get it
god gave them
it says the holy spirit so
god's given them something that they
can't see [Music]
[Music]
they can't hold they can't feel
can't smell he's given them something
that's nothing to prove to them
that they're going to get these promised possessions
possessions
or you were given the power to cast out demons
if you these are the gifts of the holy spirit
then that you can understand and also
it says that these are temporary it says that
that
you're going to have this holy spirit
until you receive the promised possession
possession
which i just read [Music]
[Music]
and to look at that if we go to chapter 13
13
of first corinthians and in paul's the
first part of it
was a letter of love and it goes on to
say charity never faileth
but whether there be prophecies they
shall fail
whether there be tongues they shall cease
cease
will there be knowledge it shall vanish away
away
actually it's superseded for we know in part
part
and we prophesy in part but when that
which is perfect
is come then that
which is in part shall be done away with
for now we see through a glass darkly
but then
face to face now i know in part but then
shall i know even
since when that which is perfect has come
come
another problem a lot of people look at
it and they say that which is perfect
has come is is talking about christ when
he comes
back at his second coming
other people will say that that which is perfect
perfect
has come is talking about the written
word of god it's talking about
the bible talking about the holy the new testament
testament
and of course like i said it about
400 years at least 300 years
before it was canonized before they ever
got it
that may be now my theory and and
i have never heard another theologian
and i'm not a theologian
i just have 50 years of studying the bible
bible
my theory what i think it is
is the consummation of the new covenant
with the consummation of you covenant
all of this makes sense
going back to ephesians 1
where it talked about you are
given the holy spirit until you receive
the promised possession
and that's until you receive the
and here in first corinthians until that
which is perfect
is come you're going to lose these things
things
you're going to lose the holy spirit
that's talking about
the indoor in the holy spirit you're not
going to to lose that that's permanent
you've got god the father god the son
god the holy spirit and these three
in dwell you're not going to lose the
holy spirit as far as an indwelling spirit
spirit
the gifts you are going to lose and i
think that's what it's told me
when are you going to lose them when
that which is perfect is come
when is that to me
that's the consummation
of the new covenant that christ inaugurated
inaugurated
in the upper room now there were a 40
year period
a transition period
that took place you had
when christ was crucified
you had 40 years that you were under the law
law
which the apostles kept but you were
also under
the new covenant the transition hadn't
been made
if you go to uh the eighth chapter of uh hebrews
hebrews
it said that the old covenant was obsolete
obsolete
and ready to vanish away
chapter nine of hebrews tells us [Music]
[Music]
that the new covenant couldn't take effect
effect
as long as the old tabernacle the temple
was still standing and all that changed
70 a.d the temple was destroyed [Music]
[Music]
a lot of places will say that they have
righteousness and a couple verses later
it will say that it was hoped for but in
galatians 5
5 talks about says
for through the spirit we eagerly await
by faith the righteousness for which we hope
hope
so here they have hope of righteousness
they're waiting
for righteousness first thessalonians 5
8 but since we belong to the day let us
be sober
putting on faith and love as a breastplate
breastplate
and the hope of salvation as a helmet
the hope of salvation hoping for salvation
salvation
hoping for righteousness hebrews
9 28 so christ when sacrifice wants to
take away the sins of many
and he will appear a second time not to
bear sin
but to bring salvation to those who are
waiting for him
it's going to appear a second time to bring
bring
i don't think so mark 16
22. now here jesus is talking to caiaphas
caiaphas
and caiaphas is asking them are you
the son of god anyway jesus answered
says i am said jesus
and you and he's talking to caiaphas he
says and you
will see the son of man sitting at the
right hand of the mighty one
coming on the clouds of heaven [Music]
[Music]
caiaphas the high priest is going to see
christ sitting at the right hand of god
coming on the clouds of heaven
if you're familiar with the old testament
testament
and the only way you can understand the
new testament
is understanding of the old testament
when they talk about coming
in clouds they're talking about coming
egypt they come in in judgment
babylon christ coming in the clouds
coming in judgment uh
when they come in the clouds they come
into judgment titus
chapter one verses one and two
paul is servant of god and an apostle of
jesus christ
to further the faith of god's elect and
their knowledge of the truth that leads
to godliness
in the hope of eternal life
god who does not lie promised before the
beginning of time
here's the hope of eternal life now
these people are hoping for something
that we already have
since then paul in acts 23 6
paul knowing that some of them were
sadducees and other pharisees
called out in the sanhedrin in the council
council
my brothers i am a pharisee descended
from a pharisee
i stand on trial because of the hope of
the resurrection of the dead
he had hope of resurrection of the dead
but he lived in hope of the resurrection
of the dead titus 2 13
while we wait for the blessed hope the appearing
appearing
of the glory of our great god and savior
blessed hope for the coming of jesus
that was her hope christ's return
coming of jesus there's another guy c.s
lewis i want to read the section one he
said c.s lewis was a
lay minister he was an author uh
right 30 40 books
well-known author want to read a
quotation lewis wrote another
theological book near the end of his
brilliant literary career entitled the
world's last
night and other essays in it he quotes
liberal scholars who typically said
the first christians who have been
proven to be false
it is clear from the new testament that
they all
expect the second coming in their
lifetime and they did
everybody expected jesus to come in in
their lifetime
and worse still they had a reason and
one which
you find very embarrassing their master
had told them so he shared and indeed created
created
their delusion he said in so many words
this generation shall not pass till all
these things be done
and lewis quotes and he was wrong
he clearly knew no more about the end of
the world
than anyone else well for one thing
jesus was not talking about the end of
the world
he's talking about the end of the age
and and most of the virgins now
has changed it from the end of the world
the end of the age and i tell them about
the end of the world
it's the end of the mosaic age [Music]
[Music]
he could have said that well it's it's
true that he was going to come and i i
don't understand it
but that he didn't go that right he said that
that [Music]
[Music]
the god and all knowing almighty god
didn't know and
i was i wouldn't have said that for
anything there's nothing in this world
passage gave him problems matthew 24 33-35
33-35
says now learn a lesson from the fig tree
tree
as soon as his twigs get tender and the
sleeves come out you know summer is near
even so when you see all these things
you know that it is near
right at the door truly i tell you
this generation will certainly not pass away
away
until all these things happen
goes on heaven and earth will pass away
but my word
will never pass away jesus said that he
was returning soon
and he never did at least 2 000 years
has gone by
and according to c.s lewis christ has
not returned back
let's look at matthew 23.
he sent his disciples out in in jerusalem
jerusalem
to the different cities it says when you
are persecuted in one place flee to another
another
truly i tell you you will not finish
going through the towns of israel
before the son of man comes he sent his
disciples out to the towns of israel
preaching the kingdom of god and he said
before you get through all those cities
[Music]
2000 years they couldn't get through all
the cities [Music]
[Music]
or did christ come [Music]
[Music]
this is out of the bible matthew 16 28
truly i tell you some of you standing
here will not taste
death before they see the son of man
did the kingdom come
was christ mistaken did he lie to us
matthew 23 33-36
against paul's talking you snakes you
brood of vipers
i'm not taking that it wouldn't paul you
snakes you brew the vipers how will you
escape being condemned to hell therefore
i am sending you prophets and sage and teachers
teachers
some of you will kill and crucify
others you will vlog in the synagogue
and pursue from town to town
and so upon you will come all the
righteous blood that has been shed on
earth from the blood of righteous abel
to the blood of zachariah
son of martial as whom you murdered
between the temple and altar
truly i tell you all this will come upon this
this
generation that's christ doing the talking
talking
all this will come up on this generation [Music]
[Music]
what happened [Music]
[Music]
did jesus return like he said he would [Music]
[Music]
and if he lied about that what else
did he lie about in the bible
for then shall great tribulation such as not
not
since the beginning of the world to this time
time
several things was supposed to happen
matthew 24 14 says and the gospel of the kingdom
kingdom
will be preached to the whole world as a testimony
testimony
to all nation and then the end will come
again it's not the end of the world
it's the end of the age and this gospel
has to be preached
to the whole world was the gospel
preached to the end of the world
according to romans 10 18 and colossians
1 16
it had matthew 24 15.
so when you see standing
in the holy place the abomination which
causes desolation
spoken through the prophet daniel let
the reader understand
did this happen according to luke 21 20
it did what was supposed to happen at
the second coming
so that we know that it did
he had a resurrection of the dead judgment
judgment
eternal life they would receive righteousness
righteousness
salvation that they hoped for a new covenant
covenant
the two ages talked about this age and
people think that we are living in this
age and still waiting on the age to come
and there will be a new heaven and a new
earth are waiting for this world to be destroyed
destroyed
and uh new heaven and new earth [Music]
[Music]
thessalonians the 2nd 2nd thessalonians the
the
people in thessalonica had received
word letter or whatever from who they
thought was paul
and it wasn't paul somebody acting like
they were paul
sent them letters saying that the resurrection
resurrection
had come and they missed it and they
were concerned
and got a hold of paul upset about
having missed the resurrection
but they hadn't missed the resurrection
but if the resurrection had been
physical resurrection [Music]
[Music]
all they had to have done was went out
and looked at the cemeteries
looked at the bones and if they were
still in the ground
then they knew resurrection hadn't happened
happened
the resurrection that is talking about
is a spiritual
resurrection flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of heaven it had
been a spiritual resurrection
romans 8 22 and 25 we know that the
whole creation has been groaning
as in pains of childbirth right up to
the present time
not only so but we ourselves who have
the first fruits of the spirit grown inwardly
inwardly
as we wait eagerly for our adoptions to sonship
sonship
the redemption of our bodies for in
this hope we were saved but hope that is
no hope at
all who hopes for what they already have
but if we hope for what we do not yet have
have
we wait for it patiently why would you
hope for something that you already have
there's no need to hope for it
if you have it and they didn't have it
they wanted it
they wanted righteousness they wanted
the promises that they hoped for
they received they received at the
consummation of the new covenant
like in hebrews
the old covenant was obsolete it was
fading away
the new covenant the consummation of it
could not take effect as long as the tabernacle
tabernacle
the old temple the temple was still standing
standing
christ took care of that in 70 a.d [Music]
[Music]
prophecies were given to protect the christians
christians
they were told when they seen jerusalem
surrounded by the armies to flee to the mountains
mountains
and they did [Music]
[Music]
daniel talks about forest well luke
talks about 42 months
daniel three and a half years
that's how long it lasted when rome
another thing the thessalonians
were being persecuted by the jews [Music]
[Music]
and paul tells them wait patiently
god is going to take care of them
he's he's going to punish those people
who have persecuting you just hold on
just wait a little while it's going to
happen it's near
the jews was the ones that was prosecuting
prosecuting
or persecuting the thessalonians
they were persecuting all the christians
in 70 a.d the ball game was
over the romans [Music]
[Music]
was at war with with the jews
and it was christ coming in the clouds
of heaven
and end up destroying jerusalem
and not only so not only that
and as i already read there has never
been such a time
in history and there'll never be
anything like it in the future
that was going to happen during this
period of time
historians wrote about this conflict and
the romans killing the jews
fighting the jews but historians record
josephus being a jew but there were
other historians there were many gentile
historians roman
historians that wrote about it there
were conflicts
in the sky in the air in the heavens
there was cherries so far during this
same period of time
but let's look at what happened up until
christ paid the price up until
he paid for the sins that we committed
and clothed us
in his righteousness nobody went to heaven
heaven
nobody you went to shule you went into
the grave
uh you can use the analogy that the rich
man and lazarus
and uh lazarus being in abraham's bosom
or whatever you want to use
and i don't know where they were at
school is a grave
they were in a holding place somewhere
because they were still had the sin
nature christ had not paid the price
but after christ having been paid to
christ in ephesians
it said that he led the captivity captive
captive
once he paid the price the resurrection
of the dead
was the resurrection of those souls that
was in shul
being brought to the presence of god
that was the resurrection
the souls that had died prior to christ
paying a price that were held [Music]
[Music]
in shul those were the ones that was resurrected
resurrected
those were the ones that were
taken into the presence of god
and judgment was also at that same time
those that had been evil and the demonic forces
forces
they were judged and judgment was
carried out
but you also not only had the
resurrection of the dead those in
shul but you also
had judgment given so you had judgment
you had a resurrection
eternal life was another thing that happened
of the new covenant
the people received the righteousness
that they hoped for
they received the salvation that they
hoped for
they received eternal life
judgment happened the second coming of
christ happened
now most theologians agree
now in 2021
that jesus did come in judgment
in 70 a.d but they're not certain how to hold
hold
or what to do about a third
coming because they're still waiting on
the earth to be destroyed
i'm not going to get into that whatever
they want to go with they can but my idea
idea
my way of looking at it is when i die
the nano's second
that i die i'm immediately in the
presence of god
not for anything that i've done but what
christ done for me
the resurrection of the dead it's
already happened
judgment was already happened
the judgment was for those that was held
in chule
and the judgment was also for the
that's [Music]
[Music]
[Music]
how much time we into it 28 30 or 28
during this transition period there was
a 40-year transition period when the
children of israel came out of egypt
it was a 40-year translation period
when they come out god gave them the long
long
stone 3 000 people were killed
day of pentecost when the law was
given in their hearts 3 000 people were saved
saved
when they came into the promised land
when they went into jerusalem the walls
of jerusalem fell
when peter was talking about
joel given the commentary on joel
he talked about the spirit being poured out
out [Music]
[Music]
let me read it there's a 40-year
transition period
john the baptist baptized with the holy
ghost and with fire
said the axe is laid to the root of the tree
tree
and peter's commentary on joel in acts 2
said that he would pour out
my spirit but also
signs in earth beneath fire
blood and fire vapors of smoke sun shall
turn into darkness
and the moon into blood before the great
and notable
now part of that is
where his spirit's going to be poured
out where the
church is going to be established
on the day of pentecost but it's
the end of that that's one prophecy but
the end of that is 40 years
later on holocaust at the destruction of
where the sun turned into darkness and
the moon into blood
that's 40 years later so even that john
the baptist
and and peter talking about it on the
day of pentecost
that prophecy is a 40-year prophecy
not only was the church established but
40 years later [Music]
[Music]
it's it's holocaust it's judgment that's
the end of it
that prophecy was for 40 years
you had the mosaic law
and you had
the period of grace or the dispensation
of grace in a sense
both of them going side by side
remember for the first 10 years there
was nothing but jews
the church had to be established [Music]
[Music]
before the consummation of the new covenant
covenant
so the first 10 years the church was
nothing but jews
gentiles wasn't well welcomed in until
the household of cornelius
and getting back looking at the
household of cornelius
let's look back at this holy spirit
again the spirit given one day of pentecost
pentecost
spirit given one day of pentecost we
call it the baptism of the holy spirit [Music]
[Music]
ten years later the baptism of the holy
spirit owned
cornelius's household but think about
this a minute
the context of both of those
was speaking in tongues miraculous abilities
in a sense it wasn't talking about the
indwelling of the holy spirit
if you look at the context of it like in
cornelius it plainly says
that they received the holy spirit just
as they did at first
how did they know because they spoke in
tongues and prophesied
he goes back to speaking in tongues and working
working
gifts miraculous abilities having these
miraculous disabilities
having these miraculous abilities
authenticated they were doing
to perform a miracle is so is something
that's outside the laws of nature
so they performed these miracles it was
outside the law of nature
to prove to the people that the words
that they spoke
came from god that's what the miracles before
before
through this whole 40-year period it was
to prove that what they spoke come from god
god
and the church was being set up when the
church was set up
then god moved into his house when god
moved into his house
the temple was destroyed and from that point
point
on the old covenant was
gone the new covenant was consummated [Music]
[Music]
and we had people still waiting
2 000 years to
the angel how long it would be
uh the angel told him [Music]
[Music]
that not to worry about it that he would
sleep with his fathers and
seal up the book well
sealing up the book was 600 years later [Music]
[Music]
john in revelation the angel told him
don't seal up the book
because it's near it's coming
soon don't seal it up [Music]
[Music]
the whole lot of difference between 600
and then john told not to seal the book
and it's been 2 000 years since that time
time
i think if you go back and and mark the
wipe the dust off your bible [Music]
[Music]
and start reading it and if you don't
understand it
read it again then you would think maybe
two thousand years is a little bit long
to be waiting for what christ said was
going to happen in the first century
that that people standing there would
see the kingdom of god come
did jesus lie to us or did he come like
he said
he was going to my bet my money is
that he come like he said he was going
to and
and everything's been fulfilled that's
just like he said
and he did come and we're living
in the age that was to come [Music]
this age has long passed long gone
if you can prove me otherwise i'll be
happy to listen to you [Music]
[Music]
and bringing this study to a close [Music]
[Music]
if you're having a hard time
understanding the bible [Music]
then well one thing you're not alone a
lot of people are
but if you're having a hard time
then you need to go back over and and
re-read it
the example that if it doesn't make
sense to you to start off with
then you're not understanding it just
like the example i give at the beginning
of the lesson
that we're given the holy spirit as a guarantee
guarantee
that we're going to receive the promised possessions
possessions
doesn't make sense and when it doesn't
make sense
then you're understanding it wrong
something's wrong
you need to go back and and relook at it again
there's it's an insult to god to say
that he's given us a book
that we can't understand we can
definitely understand it
but we need to take in consideration
audience relevance what did those people
back in the first century how did they understand
understand
when the apostles were talking to them
the people in thessalonians in the book
of thessalonians people
somebody had sent them a word acting
like that they were from the apostle paul
paul
saying that
the second coming of christ had already come
come
that he had come back and the
resurrection of the dead
and it was upsetting to them because
they had missed
it and all you got to do is read
2nd thessalonians and and you can read
about it
paul answers their concerns and says no
it hasn't happened
if the resurrection had been a physical
resurrection all they would had to do
was went out to the cemetery and look at
the grave
and bones is still there the
resurrection hadn't happened
but they had a different idea on the
resurrection than what we have
they knew it wasn't the bodily
resurrection that it was a spiritual resurrection
resurrection
somebody the christ paid the price for
so up until he paid that price nobody
went to heaven
heaven was closed nobody went to heaven prior
prior
to the confirmation of the new covenant
that christ instituted christ paid the
price on calvary up until that point
nobody ever went to heaven
period once he paid that price
then all the way back to adam
the doors of heaven were open once he
paid the price
and that's why ephesians said that
he descended into the earth and led the
captivity captive he carried those out
and and they entered into the presence
of god because they were clothed in his righteousness
righteousness
that's the resurrection but at the same
time of the resurrection
judgment judgment for the people that
were not righteous and and
not only for them but also for the
demonic forces
it was judgment plus it was resurrection
plus christ came back in the clouds came
in judgment
in the old testament you've got half a
dozen or more places where
christ or god and and christ being god
but god coming in the clouds coming to
clouds many times
and every time that he came in the
clouds he came in
judgment the sun failed to
give its light the moon turned to blood
shook
those people when they were conquered by
another nation
then their world ended like
uh jerusalem same thing happened to jerusalem
jerusalem
the first destruction it was destroyed
twice remember
but in the first god came in the clouds
to jerusalem
but it was babylon it was nebuchadnezzar
that was the instrument
that he used to bring judgment
on jerusalem [Music]
[Music]
so all through history that's the reason
that you need to understand the old testament
testament
in order to understand the new testament
the language
the genre the that
the apostles used all of that came from
the old testament when they talk about scripture
scripture
they're not talking about the new
testament they're talking about
the old testament that was their
scripture didn't have the new testament
it was the old testament [Music]
[Music]
second timothy 2 14 favorite verse of mine
mine
one of the first ones i reckon i
memorized when i was a kid
it's a study to show thyself approved
unto god a workman and needed not to be
ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth
truth
now i know that a person is not going to
be proficient
by reading through the bible one time or
two times but if you make it a daily practice
practice
then you get proficient really really fast
fast
you start making connections when you
read something over here
so that reminds me of something back here
here
and you you can go back and read that
and all these things start tying in
so understand the scriptures is not that bad
bad
but until you understand the old testament
testament
you're not going to have a true
understanding of the new testament
you're not going to understand eternal
life you're not going to understand the resurrection
resurrection
you're not going to understand
righteousness or salvation or none of that
that
but it's not that hard just daily bible
reading and
it it comes fast it does it comes really fast
fast
but if you don't understand it that's
the thing if you read something
and the holy spirit is one of the big
ones when you don't understand it
and you're just taking somebody else's word
word
something's wrong you know
you is it talking about when it talks
about the holy spirit
is it talking about the holy spirit or
is it talking about
a spirit of holiness remember in the
greek there are no articles
no a's no ands no these
and and when it talks about the holy
spirit is it
the holy spirit or is it a holy spirit
and there's a big difference between the
holy spirit as a person [Music]
[Music]
but even at that uh if it doesn't make sense
sense
you need to look at something else it's
not that hard
and what we covered in ephesians chapter one
one
uh i'm pretty positive that it's talking about
about
the gifts of the holy spirit something
get a hold of you could feel in a sense

abstract to prove that you're going to
get something
a promised possession over there it
doesn't make sense at all
