0:00 this video is brought to you by moft
0:02 today we're looking at the first 10
0:03 things you should do if you've just got
0:06 your brand new iPhone 14 14 pro or any
0:09 iPhone that runs iOS 16. these tips and
0:12 tricks will help you get the most out of
0:14 your iPhone's features battery life and
0:16 performance also I am giving away this
0:19 brand new iPhone 14. if you guys want a
0:22 chance to win be sure to subscribe to
0:23 the channel leave a like on this video
0:25 and comment your favorite feature of the
0:27 iPhone 14 along with your Instagram
0:29 username and then follow me on Instagram
0:32 at the elmsfitterbahn where I will
0:34 announce the winner two weeks from now
0:35 on the 16th of October alright so the
0:38 first thing we're going to do is
0:39 customize the new lock screen now if you
0:41 don't already know iOS 16 completely
0:44 overhauls the lock screen and also with
0:46 that adds a bunch more features for
0:48 customization so what we can do is we
0:50 can press and hold anywhere on the lock
0:52 screen and this will bring up a switcher
0:54 which will allow you to cycle between
0:56 any preset lock screen designs that you
0:59 have I've really like this as this
1:01 allows you to instantly change the look
1:03 and feel of your phone and reminds me a
1:05 little bit of switching the watch faces
1:07 out on your Apple watch now to add a new
1:09 lock screen we're going to go ahead and
1:11 press the little plus sign in the bottom
1:12 right and this will then take us through
1:14 a bunch of different presets so we have
1:16 a bunch of feature designs it will even
1:18 create designs for your photos you can
1:20 see it actually crops me out of them and
1:22 places me in front of the time this is a
1:24 really neat touch and then looking
1:26 further down we have astronomy related
1:28 wallpapers Emoji as well as a bunch of
1:31 different colors again to really match
1:33 your personality and style so I kind of
1:36 like one of these Globe ones so let's go
1:37 for this middle one here go ahead and
1:39 tap that and right away you can see it's
1:42 actually found my location now for those
1:43 that don't know I am based in London in
1:46 the UK as you can see and this is really
1:48 cool we can also go even further by
1:50 swiping between different options so we
1:52 can have a whole Earth view again we
1:54 have that slightly more zoomed in view
1:56 or we could take it to the moon if we
1:58 like as well and zoom in as as well but
2:01 I like this option the most I think this
2:02 looks pretty cool now we can also
2:04 customize this further so we can go
2:06 ahead and tap on the clock here and we
2:08 can change the fonts now this is the
2:10 first time ever you'll be able to have a
2:12 different font on your lock screen of
2:14 course Apple I've always had that very
2:16 recognizable font in fact I think that
2:18 might be this one actually but I kind of
2:20 like the more Bolder you have this like
2:22 two line design and you can also change
2:24 the colors you can really personalize it
2:26 change the Hue the temperature again all
2:30 to really match your your style so let's
2:33 go ahead and see here let's go with uh
2:36 let's let's go with this one I kind of
2:37 like it very bold and kind of classic
2:39 and above that here we can also display
2:42 different information so currently we
2:44 have the date we have the time for the
2:46 sunset so we can add and remove things I
2:48 like to keep this plain and simple I
2:50 like to just have the date and the day
2:52 and then this is my favorite part and
2:54 that is the option to add widgets yes
2:56 for the first time we can finally have
2:58 widgets on the logs screen this is a
3:01 great way to get information at a glance
3:03 so you can see there's a bunch of
3:04 presets up here from reminders to
3:06 calendar and you can go by app and find
3:08 exactly the widget that you like now as
3:11 someone who uses an Apple Watch I keep
3:13 track of my activity every day so I like
3:15 the activity app to show how far I am in
3:17 terms of my walking and my workout
3:19 distances that I want to meet each day
3:21 and secondly I like to have the weather
3:23 this is great especially here in London
3:25 we seem to have gone from Summer to
3:27 Winter in what seems like a single day
3:29 so this way I won't be caught off guard
3:31 when I'm walking out in shorts and it is
3:34 8 degrees Celsius so we'll go ahead and
3:36 add that now of course we can add more
3:38 of course we can have up to four in this
3:40 case some will take up two rows and
3:42 others will take up just one but one
3:44 thing to bear in mind with widgets is to
3:46 use them sparingly while they are great
3:48 to get a lot of information at a glance
3:50 they do update and run constantly so
3:53 this will take battery so my suggestion
3:55 instead of going for four uh maybe go
3:57 for two to sort of find that happy
3:59 middle round and then once we've
4:01 customized the new preset we'll go ahead
4:03 and select add and then we have the
4:05 option to add it as a pair both through
4:07 our lock screen as well as our home
4:09 screen so we'll go ahead and do that and
4:11 as you can see now in that same switcher
4:13 menu we have added the new preset which
4:15 we can tap in and here it is looks great
4:17 one of the first things I do with any
4:20 new phone is get some good accessories
4:22 and this is where the snap case as well
4:24 as the SNAP stand and wallet from moft
4:27 come in these products add protection
4:29 and functionality to your iPhone the
4:31 snap phone stand and wallet comes in
4:33 four beautiful colors two perfectly
4:35 match your style and the new iPhone 14.
4:38 the snap phone case is available for all
4:41 current iPhone 14 models and as a nice
4:43 touch of transparency along the sides to
4:46 really let your phone's color shine
4:47 through while the cool white or Smoky
4:50 black back sets a neutral tone the case
4:52 features up to five foot drop protection
4:55 and actually self heals from lighter
4:57 scratches over time it is also designed
4:59 to increase the magnetic strength in
5:02 fact it is up to two times stronger
5:03 compared to the standard magsafe and
5:06 this is especially important for an
5:08 accessory like a wallet and better still
5:11 it also strengthens the magnets of any
5:13 other magsafe compatible products the
5:15 wallet accessory not only lets you store
5:17 up to three cards it also acts as a
5:20 stand perfect to set your phone up at a
5:22 desk all the while still having a very
5:24 thin profile that is comfortable in the
5:26 hand as well as in the pocket to learn
5:29 more about the snap phone case as well
5:31 as the SNAP stand and Wallet be sure to
5:33 click the links in the description a big
5:35 thank you tomorrow for supporting the
5:36 channel now back to the iPhone 14. now
5:39 the iPhone 14 also introduces some
5:41 really useful safety features that
5:44 you're gonna want to make sure are
5:45 activated so to do this we're going to
5:47 go into the settings tab and then we're
5:49 going to scroll down to where you find
5:50 emergency SOS now the first thing to
5:53 turn on here is Crash detection now if
5:55 you don't already know crash detection
5:57 will detect if you're ever in a serious
5:59 car crash and will automatically dial
6:01 Emergency Services if you do not respond
6:04 so my suggestion definitely turn this on
6:07 another useful feature you may want to
6:09 turn on is call with five presses now on
6:12 this particular phone it is grayed out
6:13 as I don't have a SIM card in there but
6:15 normally speaking you will have the
6:17 option to turn this on and this will
6:19 allow you to press the side button so
6:21 the sleep wake button five times rapidly
6:23 to automatically start a call with
6:25 Emergency Services you can imagine for
6:27 example having your phone in your pocket
6:29 and if ever you're in a position where
6:31 you need to call 9-1-1 or any emergency
6:33 services you can do this in a very
6:35 subtle way simply by pressing this
6:37 button five times right from your pocket
6:39 and then on the topic of security let's
6:42 go ahead and add some settings to face
6:43 ID so we'll go ahead and tap into face
6:45 ID and passcode I'm going to quickly
6:48 type in my password here and what we're
6:50 going to do is turn on face ID with a
6:52 mask now masks are still around and
6:55 being able to unlock your phone whilst
6:57 wearing a mask is just super useful
6:58 especially of course if you don't
7:00 already have an Apple Watch so turning
7:02 on this setting will allow you to do so
7:04 Also I suggest adding an alternative
7:07 appearance if you wear glasses lots of
7:09 makeup or frequently change your
7:11 hairstyle as this ensures that a face ID
7:13 will always recognize you and then
7:15 finally on the very bottom are two
7:17 essential settings and the first is the
7:19 allow when locked section now my
7:22 suggestion is to turn almost everything
7:23 off here as realistically speaking if
7:26 say your phone were lost or stolen you
7:28 wouldn't want anyone without your
7:30 password or access to your face ID to
7:32 have access to things like your messages
7:34 your wallet or to return calls and
7:37 especially USB accessories so my
7:39 suggestion turn all of these off perhaps
7:41 with the exception of the lock screen
7:42 widgets that we set up just earlier when
7:45 customizing our lock screen and then
7:47 lastly is the erase the erase data
7:49 option now this is crucial if you are
7:52 prone to forgetting your password do
7:53 make sure that you write this down
7:54 somewhere but realistically most people
7:56 will use face ID or touch ID if you're
7:59 on an SE and this here means that if
8:01 your password is incorrectly typed into
8:03 the phone 10 times it will automatically
8:05 remove all of its data now later on in
8:08 the video I'm going to show you the best
8:09 way to backup your phone to make sure
8:11 that your data is always safe but what
8:13 this means is if your phone is ever lost
8:15 or stolen no one will be able to access
8:17 your data which at the end of the day is
8:20 most important now the new iPhone 14s
8:22 come with some excellent displays so
8:24 let's go ahead and optimize it to make
8:26 sure we get the most out of it now first
8:28 under the display and brightness setting
8:30 we have the option to switch between
8:31 light and dark mode both have their
8:34 advantages I like to use night mode
8:36 light mode during the day and night mode
8:38 well during it the night so what I
8:40 suggest doing is turning on the
8:42 automatic option and this will
8:43 automatically cycle between the two
8:45 modes depending on the time of day so as
8:47 you can see between 7 and 10 pm I have
8:49 light mode going and then between those
8:52 other times we are in dark mode as this
8:54 makes it just a little bit nicer to look
8:57 at at night whereas during the day I
8:59 like to have the bright white
9:01 backgrounds on the display now secondly
9:03 we have your brightness toggle now my
9:05 suggestion is to rarely use a maximum
9:08 brightness in fact the auto brightness
9:09 on iPhones is already really great and
9:12 will only really turn this up if you
9:13 need to let's say when you're out in the
9:15 sun but otherwise keeping it at around
9:17 that 50 to 60 range is best for your
9:20 phone's battery life as well as your
9:22 display life and then beneath that we
9:24 have the option for True tone now true
9:26 tone is pretty cool what true tone
9:28 essentially does is it will adjust the
9:30 temperature of the display to match your
9:32 surrounding environment now I have
9:34 studio lights surrounding me now which
9:36 are set to daylight so they'll be
9:38 slightly on the warmer side so you can
9:40 see that when I turn this option on my
9:42 screen grabs a little bit warmer the
9:43 whites are a little bit more yellow
9:45 slash orangey raster if I turn it off it
9:48 has more of a bluish tint and basically
9:50 what this option does is it makes the
9:52 display even more comfortable to look at
9:54 during the day but especially at night
9:56 so this is a feature I definitely
9:58 suggest having on at all times only not
10:01 when you are editing as of course this
10:03 does affect the accuracy and the color
10:05 reproduction of the display so if you're
10:07 editing a video or a text or an image I
10:10 do suggest turning this off now you can
10:12 do this in settings but a quicker way to
10:14 do this is via the control center so you
10:16 can swipe down from the top right corner
10:18 and then press and hold on the
10:20 brightness toggle and here we have the
10:21 option to turn on and off true tone and
10:24 here also we can actually quickly switch
10:25 between light and dark mode and beneath
10:29 that we have Night Shift now Night Shift
10:30 Works kind of similar to True tone but
10:33 instead takes it to an even more extreme
10:34 level you can see if I go ahead and turn
10:36 this on it makes the screen almost
10:38 appear orange and this is an effort to
10:41 minimize the amount of blue light that
10:43 is coming from the display now for many
10:45 people blue light is not good for your
10:47 sleep it can cause headaches and a lot
10:49 of strain especially when looking at
10:51 screens at night so if you are affected
10:53 by this you can set it to be scheduled
10:55 to turn on in the evenings but again do
10:58 turn this off when you are editing
11:00 photos or videos as again the color
11:01 reproduction will not be as accurate as
11:04 it normally would be lastly there is the
11:07 race to wake option now this is
11:08 something that I like to have on this is
11:10 where if your phone is flat on a table
11:12 and you pick it up it will automatically
11:14 turn on the display I like to have this
11:16 on as it just makes it easier and
11:18 quicker to unlock but if you are looking
11:19 to save every bit of battery you can
11:22 turn this off and while we're on the
11:24 topic of saving battery these next tips
11:26 are going to be really useful and that
11:27 has to do with notifications and
11:29 background app refresh now these are two
11:32 very big factors that definitely
11:33 contribute to how well or not well your
11:36 battery life will perform so starting
11:38 off with notifications I'm going to go
11:40 ahead and start in the settings app here
11:42 and what I suggest you do is scroll
11:44 through all of the applications on your
11:46 phone and see whether they actually need
11:48 to be sending you notifications you can
11:50 see that for many apps I've actually
11:51 turned this off entirely and for many of
11:54 them as well I don't allow notifications
11:56 on the lock screen this means that when
11:58 my phone goes off I'm know it is
12:00 something important in other words I
12:02 only want messages calls maybe a few
12:05 shopping apps or for deliveries and
12:07 perhaps some banking apps to come into
12:08 my phone otherwise I don't mind if they
12:10 just go straight to the notification
12:12 center where I can swipe down to access
12:14 them anytime maybe a couple times
12:15 throughout the day and other apps they
12:17 just don't need to be sending me
12:18 notifications games for example books
12:21 apps like this they have no business
12:23 wasting my time with useless
12:25 notifications trust me this is not only
12:27 good for your battery life but also for
12:29 your well-being and the similar thing
12:31 can be said for background app refresh
12:33 so we're going to go back select General
12:35 and then we're going to click on
12:36 background app refresh and here again
12:38 you can see many of them are off now I
12:40 don't suggest turning this off for all
12:42 applications like Maps applications or
12:45 certain messaging apps you may want them
12:47 to always be up to date in the
12:48 background but many other apps just
12:50 don't need to be running I'm thinking
12:52 particularly about games shopping apps
12:54 grocery apps anything like that turn it
12:57 off as the less is running in the
12:58 background the less battery you are
13:00 using earlier we talked about the
13:02 control center now this is a really
13:04 useful feature again the control center
13:06 is what you'll find here in the top
13:08 right hand of the screen this allows you
13:10 to quickly access core system functions
13:12 and settings without having to go into
13:14 the settings app or leave whichever app
13:16 you are using but there is a way to
13:18 customize this and really get the most
13:20 out of it so to do this we're going to
13:22 go into settings and then select Control
13:24 Center and then first we have the option
13:25 to either allow it or disallow it to be
13:28 accessed whilst using other apps now if
13:30 you are a mobile gamer say for example
13:32 and you often swipe from the edges of
13:34 your screen you don't want your screen
13:35 to be accidentally covered you may want
13:37 to turn this off personally I like to
13:39 have it on as I do use it quite often
13:41 and then beneath that is where we can
13:43 actually customize the controls that you
13:45 want shown in the control center so this
13:47 upper portion here will show the
13:49 controls that you currently have and
13:50 then we can go ahead and remove them
13:51 let's say we remove the torch we'll
13:53 press the little minus button and then
13:54 we'll select remove and then we can also
13:56 rearrange them by pressing this little
13:58 three line menu and drag them around and
14:00 then beneath that here on the bottom are
14:02 the additional controls that we can add
14:04 so let's say we want to bring the torch
14:06 back we'll go ahead and select the
14:07 little plus here it's added it to the
14:09 bottom of the list so that's now there
14:10 on the bottom right corner let's say if
14:13 I want this in the top left simply move
14:15 it up and there we go it's just
14:16 repositioned back to where it was before
14:19 notification center is super useful and
14:22 once you've narrowed down to only the
14:23 options that you really use it'll just
14:25 be less cluttered easier to find what
14:27 you need and just more useful one thing
14:30 you may have seen in the control center
14:31 is focus modes now if you don't know
14:33 what this is uh last year with the big
14:35 release of iOS Apple basically rebranded
14:38 do not disturb to focus modes and added
14:41 more options within it so as you can see
14:43 you can now have multiple different
14:44 Focus modes go ahead and press and hold
14:46 here to see all the different ones and
14:48 to show you what this does and why to
14:50 use it we're going to go ahead and add a
14:52 new Focus mode with a little plus sign
14:54 here on the bottom so we can create a
14:56 preset let's say mindfulness I don't
14:58 have one set up for that yet so we'll go
15:00 ahead and customize it and this is
15:02 really cool so whenever you activate the
15:05 mindfulness Focus mode you can basically
15:07 allow only certain apps or people to
15:10 allow to send you notifications so in
15:13 other words perhaps only the most
15:14 important contacts and the most
15:16 important apps the rest you just turn
15:18 off allowing you to focus in this case
15:19 on being mindful for your mental health
15:22 or whether you are sleeping or working
15:24 out whatever the occasion may be this is
15:26 a really great feature and one thing I
15:29 really love is that this automatically
15:30 carries over to all of your other Apple
15:32 devices whether it be your Apple watch
15:34 your iPad or even your Mac so first here
15:37 we can go ahead and select on people and
15:39 we can customize and add specific people
15:41 so let's say I can add this one person
15:43 here we'll go ahead and press done
15:46 and this means that I will only allow
15:47 notifications from that specific person
15:49 now secondly we have a menu That's
15:52 separate for calls so we can still
15:53 choose to allow everybody uh specific
15:55 groups on your contact list that you may
15:57 have made as well as only your favorite
15:59 and the same exact same thing can be
16:01 done for apps so we can go ahead and add
16:03 custom apps so let's say alarms I want
16:06 to keep my alarms going go ahead and
16:07 press done this way regardless of the
16:09 focus mode that I'm in the alarm will
16:12 still come in and then we also have the
16:13 option to allow for time sensitive
16:16 notifications this is something you may
16:18 want to turn on or off again this will
16:20 depend on the focus mode and what kind
16:22 of notifications you want coming in now
16:25 beneath that here we have the option
16:26 also to add a schedule so we can also
16:28 have it automatically turn off at a
16:30 specific a turn on or off at a specific
16:32 time of day so let's say you do your uh
16:35 your your yoga or your mindfulness at a
16:37 specific time of day habitat
16:39 automatically from 4 pm to 5 PM it will
16:41 turn on and off without you having to do
16:43 anything and then with this new Focus
16:45 mode we we can go ahead and activate it
16:47 manually by just going into the
16:48 notification center press and holding on
16:50 Focus we're going to select mindfulness
16:52 as that's the new one we just created
16:54 and then as you can see we'll have this
16:55 little icon in the top left or top right
16:58 here in the notification center to show
17:00 that we've activated this Focus mode and
17:03 to turn it off simply press it again and
17:05 then we're back to normal one of the
17:07 upgrades that we get with the iPhone 14
17:08 as well as the 14 pro and pro Max is
17:11 action mode now in the camera app If You
17:13 Now swipe to the video section we have
17:16 this new little icon here in the top
17:18 left and this will activate action mode
17:20 now as you can see this will
17:22 automatically switch us to the ultra
17:24 wide lens and we'll create an extra
17:25 stable shot now I've talked more about
17:27 the quality and the impact of this in my
17:30 full review of the iPhone 14 which I
17:32 will leave Linked In the description but
17:34 my suggestion when using this mode is to
17:36 actually switch back to the main lens
17:38 now as you can see it does crop in quite
17:41 significantly but the main lens is much
17:43 better than the ultra wide lens on the
17:45 iPhone 4 14 as well as on the pro and
17:47 pro Max as it is more detailed sharper
17:50 and especially on the pro and pro Max
17:52 actually has a higher megapixel count
17:54 which will ultimately result in a better
17:56 looking image so my suggestion if you
17:59 were to use the action mode which I
18:00 think if you're running or if you're
18:02 trying to get some gimbal style shots is
18:04 a really nice mode to have do make sure
18:06 you switch back to that main lens rather
18:08 than the ultra wide lens that Apple
18:11 automatically will select and this
18:13 brings us back to one of the first tips
18:14 that we talked about in this video and
18:17 that is to erase the data after 10
18:19 failed attempts of typing in the wrong
18:21 password now the reason you wouldn't
18:23 have to worry about this is as long as
18:25 you have a backup now the best way to
18:27 back up your phone is through iCloud now
18:30 to do this is to tap on your name in the
18:31 top of the settings app and then we're
18:33 going to click on iCloud and then we
18:35 have the option here for iCloud backup
18:37 now chances are you will have to pay for
18:39 some extra storage as iCloud only offers
18:42 five gigabytes for free way too little
18:44 by the way but I do still think it is is
18:46 worth paying for that extra storage I
18:48 believe it is only one dollar for 50
18:50 gigabytes or around two dollars for 200
18:52 gigabytes and this will be enough to
18:54 back up your phone automatically every
18:56 night believe me this is worth it if
18:59 ever your phone is lost broken or stolen
19:01 your data is always safe and then when
19:03 you get a new phone you can just start
19:05 right from where you left off without
19:06 having to worry about anything being
19:08 lost or having to reset everything
19:10 everything will be safe and you can just
19:12 smoothly move on as if nothing happened
19:14 to your phone again this is definitely
19:16 worth paying for more than any of other
19:18 Apple services in my opinion at least
19:20 iCloud is really really great alright so
19:24 those are 10 things that I do to any new
19:26 iPhone including the iPhone 14 to
19:29 maximize its features performance as
19:31 well as the battery life let me know if
19:33 this video helps you out and if you have
19:35 any tips that I didn't mention today
19:37 please leave them in the comments I'm
19:39 always curious to hear your thoughts and
