You're going to freak out. The Champions League anthem
at Budoglin.
I have crossed Europe from end to end. I
took two planes and traveled
3,100 km to reach Bodo, the polar hell.
The northernmost team in
Champions League history. So far north that natural grass doesn't grow
. There, in a modest
artificial turf stadium,
the miracle of European football was born. Without millions,
without stars. with an ex-mistress as a
psychologist and a crazy coach. Knutsen
Knutsen
who believed
is the first, the first, the first,
the first of bodoglim. He
believed his players could play more
offensively than anyone else and beat everyone.
And he did it. He has won four league titles in five years
and reached the Europa League semi-finals,
but his work is incomplete. The bodo
has not yet said his last word. They
want the Champions League and that is
precisely the story I am going
to tell you today.
Good morning, it's 7 a.m.
We are in Bodo, in the
Arctic Circle in Norway, at the North Pole. We've
completely lost our minds for
coming here, although the real culprit
is Fivers, the sponsor of this
season's travel program, which will
take us to European places we'd never
imagined we'd be. And the first one
is this one. [Music]
To be honest, I still can't believe
we're here. Five years ago, when
Bodoglim reached the
conference quarterfinals and no one knew them, I took
notice, made a video, started
investigating, and discovered all the
insane things this place and this
club are. Last year they played in the
Europa League semi-finals and were
discovered by the whole world, and now that they
've made it to the Champions League for the first
time and reached the elite of
European football, we're here and we have a
lot, a lot to say. So let's get to it.
My goal in coming to this city is
very clear. I want both you
and I to not leave this place without
knowing four basic and key things.
First, what is Bodo, where are we? And
what makes this place so special? The
second one, obviously, who is Bodo
Glim? And how did you suddenly
become someone in European football?
Third, who is Kietil Nutsen? the
spiritual leader, the shaman who has
managed to, well, transform this
team from nothing to everything. And the latest,
how UEFA allows an
8,000-seat artificial turf stadium to
host Champions League matches. Let's find out.
Let's answer the first question.
Where are we? What is this? This is
Bodo and it's a 16-hour drive from
Norway's capital. very far north
of Norway. To give you an idea,
Bodo is further north than the
northernmost point in all of Iceland. A point, a
place that we consider remote, cold and
far away. Well this is more so. In fact,
the inhabitants of this area, from the north,
from the south, from the capital, have always
been considered a little strange,
different, and have been discriminated against a
bit. The average winter temperature here
is -12º, but with the wind
blowing in from the Arctic, the
wind chill will be -20º, what do
I know? It's August right now, but I'm
freezing cold and thank goodness I'm dressed warmly
. Thanks to Siroco, sponsor
of this video and responsible for ensuring that I'm not
freezing to death both inside
and out. All the clothes I
wear are from Siroco, waterproof,
perfect for cycling, skiing,
adventure, mountaineering, and glasses. They have
absolutely everything you need to wear, which is
really useful for this type of
trip. Sponsor this video today and
you'll get a 10% discount on
all their clothing, all their garments,
all their products with the link
in the description box. Alex is
also wearing the clothes and can
confirm this. Is she pretty or not?
Well, that's it, you already know. We continue.
are only seven countries in the world
with territories within the
Arctic Circle, and Norway, a small part of
Norway, is one of them. to
give you an idea of where we are, in one
of the most remote,
inaccessible, cold and distant territories in
the world. Okay.
Okay.
The most striking thing about Bodo is that it looks
like a totally new city because it
is a totally new city. In 1940,
it was bombed by Nazi Germany and
had to be rebuilt from scratch.
After the bombings, only
20% of the city remained standing. 20%. The remaining 80%
completely collapsed,
and the citizens of Bódola had to
rebuild step by step, given the
difficult climate,
transportation, and
geographical difficulties they face here. That's why,
for them, seeing the city so prosperous and
with so much future is their greatest pride. [Music]
[Music]
One of the things that has caught my
attention the most about Bodo is this, not
only that there are
Bodoclint flags in all the houses, but that there are
no curtains. Consider that here, for
89 months a year, it's practically
nighttime all day long and there's no sunlight at all.
Then they remove the curtains to
take advantage of even the smallest ray that
may enter. We still have
many corners of
European and world football to visit this year and tell the
best stories there with views
like these. Obviously, if you don't
want to miss it, you have to what what,
sorry, occupational hazards. I was saying
that if you want to see everything we're going to
bring, and I'm really working my ass off,
as you've seen,
you have to subscribe to the channel. If you
're not subscribed, you should be
because there are tons of people watching
the videos who aren't subscribed, and that makes it
difficult for us to grow on
YouTube. I'll count to three and you'll
subscribe. One, two, three. Are you
subscribed? To make up for it, I propose
something to you.
Fibes, this season's sponsor
on the channel, is taking us to all these places. I suggest you
go to the link in the
description box, which is a link to a video
I uploaded on Fivers, and then
tell me in the comments where you want us to
go this year with Fibers to record a
video, anywhere in Europe. The
comment with the most likes, I truly,
truly tell you, will be the destination we
go to this season. I
can't put it better for you. We continue with the video.
Bodo isn't fooling anyone, guys. It's
literally what you see. It is not an
excessively cosmopolitan city, it is not
an excessively touristy city, it is
a maritime city, cold and maritime. Their
industry is ships, fishing, the
sea and the cold. And
that's probably why football has been
so successful, because it's told
Norway first, and then the rest of the world,
"Hey, we're not just salmon, water,
and snow. We're much more than that, and we
[Music]
I'm on my way to the stadium and I'm amazed
that the whole city is dressed in the
team's colors. In every corner, on
every door, on every street corner, in every
business, there is a flag, a scarf,
stickers, as you can see, of
Bodoglim. On every corner I had
never seen a city so small and so closely
linked to a football team. [Music]
[Music]
And this is the Mira Stadion at Place to
be, the only stadium in this Champions League
with artificial turf. [Music] It
[Music] It
's very difficult for UEFA to allow you to
play here, look, come closer, Alex, here's
an official Champions League match,
a Europa League semi-final. These
rubber balls, which are quite
different from the artificial turf in
Spain, already show us that this
grass is completely different.
Artificial, but different. Because?
Because it has a heating plate
like underfloor heating underneath that
allows the ice to melt when it snows, and it snows
a lot here, and
matches can be played here as if they were
on the best-maintained natural grass in
all of Europe. This is something very rare.
Only John Boyes, of the
teams currently playing
regularly in the Champions League,
has artificial turf in their stadiums,
and it would be completely impossible
for natural grass to grow here with
all the snowfall and lack of sun
throughout the year. That's why
FIFA and UEFA allow them to play on
artificial turf and host the
best teams in Europe here. This
obviously means that the players
are more accustomed to playing on this
pitch, that they
perform better, that they play better at home
than away from home, but that obviously doesn't prevent them from
being a
legendary, historic team away from home, at
least in the Norwegian league. And they're
already doing so in Europe because in 2020 this
team clicked, and it wasn't just a matter of
artificial turf, but something, everything,
changed at Bodoglin forever, to
become simply legends. I'm
here talking to the press officer for
Budoglim, who's explaining
things to me while I'm recording that are
mind-blowing. Of course, think about one thing, there
is no natural grass field here
. So when they have to
play an away game
against a big team from Céspe
, Tottenham as a player
last year in the Europa League semi-finals
, what do they do? How can they
practice on natural grass? How do they know
what the texture of natural football,
of natural grass, is? They usually have to
take a one-and-a-half-hour flight
to Oslo or a 16-hour drive to
Oslo to play on natural grass,
train on borrowed natural grass,
and then travel to, in this case, Austria
to play the second leg of this
tie. It's crazy, really.
They're going to change the stadium now, they're going to
make it new in 2027, they're going to build a
stadium suited to the club's needs
, but it's still going to be made of
artificial turf. It's absolutely crazy.
People will say, "No, it's just that now with the
artificial grass he has it very well, eh." Of
course, since they play in the league, they
don't stop during these summer months; they
finish in January because of the high
temperatures, that is, the low
temperatures. Here they are used to
playing in the summer and have a high peak
performance. Well no. Keep in mind that they
never get a vacation,
because when everyone else is
resting, they're playing in the league,
and when they're resting and everyone
else is at their peak, they're
playing in the Champions League and Europa
League. That is, 12 consecutive months
competing in these conditions, without
natural grass, without being able to train. What
others see as an advantage is quite
the opposite, it is a disadvantage. They
are used to pushing themselves to the
limit much more than any other
club. And I repeat it again, it is a miracle.
miracle.
And now, let me tell you a
story. For me, the most wonderful in
European football in many, many years.
Until the 1970s, clubs from northern
Norway couldn't play in
Norway's top division because they were
considered too far away,
too difficult to get into, and a
bit inferior, a bit worse. There was
a bit of discrimination against those from the
north, not just in football, but throughout
society. In the 1970s, this possibility opened up,
and teams from the north
had to overcome a playoff against
teams from the south to reach the first
division. Despite all these
difficulties, there was one team, Budo
Glen, the team that plays here, that
managed to win the Norwegian Cup
while still in the second division. It
grew little by little, but never
reached the first division. It was
a club that was a lift between first and
second. The difficulties of the north,
compounded by the weather, the climate, and the fact that,
well, they didn't make things easy for them in Norway,
made it practically impossible to
grow. The team won another cup in the
1990s, but still failed to remain
in the first division. It was a bad team,
as they say here, a difficult team to
watch, a mediocre team until
2018 came along and everything changed forever. Then
Then
a new management and coaching staff came to the club,
changing everything, not only from the
game, from the football side, but also from the
mental side. The club's most striking signing
wasn't a coach, a
sporting director, but a mental coach, a
former military man, a former F16 pilot who changed the
mentality of the players so they
stopped feeling weak, soft and
bad footballers and changed that
mentality, because once they had a
strong mindset they changed the style of play and the
team stopped being a defensive,
dull and Ocerista team to become
one of the most attractive and
aggressive teams in world football.
The players and the club, with this
mental training, completely erased
the words "
win", "lost", or "three points" from their dictionary, and you might say,
"Wow, this is all nonsense, all
philosophy, isn't it? Honestly, we go out on
the streets, we ask people,
we talk to people at the club, and no one
talks about winning or losing. They talk about
performance and evolution, because that's what
they're after: not spending money, not
making crazy investments, bringing in
young players, training them,
developing them, and investing in psychologists,
trainers, nutritionists,
coaches, and fitness trainers. That's
when this whole cocktail was
ready, when in 2020 they changed
the history of this club forever and
won their first league, setting a
historic record for points in Norway and a
historic record for goals. That's when
the adventure began, and they were able to plant
the Bodoglim flag
in Europe. [Music] You
already know the rest of the story. They
beat Roma 6-1 in the Conference
League. All of Europe found out; they
reached the quarterfinals of that same
Conference League. Then They tried to
qualify for the Champions League, but
they didn't make it. It's been 18 years since a
Norwegian club qualified for the Champions League group stage
, but they still reached
the Europa League semi-finals
last year, amazed the world,
and now they can do it again in the
Champions League third time
lucky. The team that has prioritized "
we" over "me," although
I lied to you, if there's a proper name, if there's
a visible face in all this.
Kietil Nutsen, but who the hell is
Norway means everything. Yes, of course
he's a legend. He has been a role model
for a club and been a great leader and a
great trainer for the club. [Applause]
Well, what can I tell you that
those bodo-swearers have told us, Kil
Luchen? That's it, he's a leader, he's a
hero, he's the legend, the coach who has
turned this team, which was a team that was a
lift between the second and first
division, into what it is right now, A
European benchmark, a team that does
things above winning or
losing, does things thinking about
development, thinking about performance,
thinking about the evolution of the
players, that thinks about
us before me, that has changed
the mentality not only of this
team that now wins titles four in
five years, but of the entire city, of the
pride of the north, which has a lot to
say and these guys speak very well, not
only to Norway, but to the entire world. And
I love the way they talk. [Music]
[Music] [Applause]
[Applause] [Music]
[Music] [Applause]
When I saw him play, it was like I
was watching Levines and two years ago I
came back and when I saw him play I was
surprised. Last year was crazy. [Music]
[Music]
Apparently here in Norway,
pre-match drinks before football are also a religion,
but the peculiarity is that they don't do it in
a bar, they literally do it in a
beer factory with wine casks,
a beautiful place, everyone wears
yellow, everyone puts on their
shirts, no matter how cold or thunder and
obviously in the winter months you have to
take shelter somewhere, because it
gets freezing here. What better
place to take shelter and have a drink
before a game than literally a
brewery? Alex is there with his
face. He's gorgeous. I'm freaking out. He
's there. He's there to make the
beers there for both of us to roast and everything and
the people really drink them. The
issue is the price.
[Applause] [Music]
Why? Why not?
What's not to be crazy about? It's the
best football team in the whole wide
world. We might not get the best results
even though we had reached the semi-finals in the Europa League. [
League. [ Music]
Music]
When the teams come up here, this is
where hell has frozen over. Yeah. Yeah. Do
n't worry. If I own this place and
hell, I would live in hell and rent out. Thank
you. Thank you so much.
much.
Have you seen that practically everyone is
wearing the shirt of Bodo?
Specifically this one. And what coincidence
could it be yours? Because I'm
giving it away on Fevers. It's very simple, I'm
not asking for much either. Just
download Fibers from the link in the
description, from the same link where you
have to enter where you want us to
travel to for the next game, and there you'll
be able to see the football social network
like this, with tons of content,
videos, video calls,
new features, a ton of things for
football fans. Also, on my account,
watch this video where, if you follow me and
give it a like, you can participate in the
drawing for a Bodoglin shirt with
the tag I just bought here in
Norway. Good luck. [Music]
The Champions League anthem on Budoglin. You already
know where we are, who they are, who
their coach is, how they did it,
how they got here to the
greatest European nights in the north of the
world, in the Arctic Circle.
The most beautiful melody of all
[Applause]
It's the first, the first, the first,
the first for Bodogl after three
attempts fighting for the Champions League.
Now they have it close in 5 minutes, 1-0. There's
a lot of playoff left. I know, I know.
But what Budo Glint just did
is click, knocking on the door of the
Champions League phase. Listen, there he
is, there's Casper Haw. This guy is really good.
really good. [Applause]
What is this? But, what is this? But, what is this? But what is this
? Second
goal for Budogim. Second goal for Budo
Glim. In 15 minutes they're winning 2-0. They're
going crazy because now
can't believe it. That they've got three.
That they're 3-0. It's absolutely incredible.
incredible. [Applause]
[Applause] Magic.
Magic. Incredible.
Incredible.
Listen to me, listen to me, listen to me, we're
26 minutes into the game and
The fourth, the fourth. But, what
Suddenly, the whole stadium has taken over, the
whole stadium,
and they've all started
waving their scarves in the wind because
today is clearly a
historic day. It's one thing to reach
the quarterfinals of the Conference
League, to put six past
Mourinho's Roma, it's also a very big thing to
play in the semifinals of a Europa
League, but reaching the Champions League
is what every club in Europe dreams of,
and they, I dare say,
are achieving it today.
We're making history, Alex.
We're on the most important day in the
history of the Bog, and you're looking like a
This is going to end soon. They're not going to score any
more goals because it's mathematically
impossible. I'm just going to say one thing.
Go on, don't laugh. Mathematically impossible.
impossible.
All the cold I've been through has been worth
it. It could have been worse. Thank
goodness I was carrying the Sirioco. That has
brought all the luck to Bodoclip. But
every second out in the open
was worth it because today I saw
the best match I've seen
This, dear friends of Fers,
this year's sponsors of the channel,
is the beginning of a friendship.
I want you to know, while everyone is
singing in falsetto here in D minor, in
D minor, that
this has possibly been
the most impressive journey, the
craziest match, the most incredible story in the 9 years we've had the channel.
Cold in August is good, a
historic rout. This is this, this is another. I just
can't say anything. Thanks to
everyone for watching. If you subscribe and
like it, I don't care. Man,
do it, right?
But I just can't say anything else. It's
not that I can't wait to
say anything else. It's just over,
people are still singing, and the Bodoclip will
be in Europe in Champions League
preseason next season. Thanks to everyone. I
mean, maybe we'll make a descent, man.
man.
Yeah, yeah. Let's see, I mean. Thanks to
Publa Ferrería as always for being
with us. A kiss to Publa
Ferrería. Nothing, just a kiss.
To Fers and Sirioco for being with us today
and to all of you because this has only just
begun. Say goodbye, Alex.
See you in the next video. We
have no idea. I was going to say something,
