Hi, welcome to ISA 2010 online. I'm
going to take just a minute and
introduce myself to you. My name is
Becky Smith. I have a long history here
at Utah Tech. Retired from full-time
work about 10 years ago and enjoyed
teaching enough that I still like to
teach online. So, I'm very happy to be
starting a new semester with you as my
students. One thing I will say with
regards to my webcam is that it's a
little higher than my monitor. So, when
we are on Zoom calls, you may notice
that I don't seem to be looking directly
at you. And that's because I'm probably
looking at your picture on the screen
and not up at the camera.
I am originally from up north up in the
Camas, Utah area. My husband and I have
lived here though in St. George for just
about 46 years and so we're almost
native to the area.
I have a large background
or a long history of teaching in the
information systems area and I'm happy
to be helping you understand better
business data analytics and the Excel
program in particular.
As part of this orientation v video, I'm
going to take you through some
highlights of the syllabus, but mostly
walk you around the class.
This is an online class and so primarily
we will meet online. If you want to see
me uh at an office hour, we will do it
in this zoom format or in a zoom format.
If you're not comfortable with utilizing
full computer to talk with your
instructor or to ask questions, whatever
that might be. this will be a good
learning experience for you and I hope
you learn fairly quickly so that it
doesn't impede your progress in the
class. [music]
So, let's go ahead and get started. I'm
going to hide myself at this point and
we're going to move over into the
So, I'm going to start by taking just a
minute and hitting a few highlights
before we actually get into the course.
This is introduction to business
analytics and it's ISA 2010. As a
course, you are either in section 40,
section 41, or section 42.
You will need to be able to identify
which section you are in whenever you
send me a message so that I can locate
you in the right class.
First, look at the course criteria. This
is a three semester hour course
primarily for business majors as a
pre-business core class or a foundation
class taken by population health majors
or any other students that are
interested in becoming more proficient
in the Excel program. This class will
provide you with an opportunity to
become Moss Excel expert certified
through a company called Certaport, a professional
professional
certification company. If you do pass
the certification test, you will be able
to put that on your resume or data
sheet, whatever you call it, and you'll
also be able to uh indicate to a
potential employer that you are Excel
expert certified. And we'll talk more
as you go through the syllabus which you
will as part of a syllabus orientation.
But a few of the highlights that I want
to cover for you is first of all I want
you to know where our objectives for
this course come from. There's a reverse pyramid
pyramid
over the broad umbrella is the
institutional learning outcomes or the
ILOS. These are the learning outcomes
that are Utah Tech University ultimate
objectives as an institution.
Within the institution, there are
various programs and each program comes
up with their program learning
objectives and how they will fit into
the overall institutional learning
outcomes. And then a third layer down
would be our course learning outcomes.
Everything we do within this course is
designed to meet the objectives of the
course which will meet
the program learning outcomes from the
program and then will also in turn meet
your institutional learning outcomes.
Now that may not seem very important but
when you're asking about why do we do
this? Why do I have to learn this? that
type of question, you're going to find
out that it is because we have this
three- tiered program to meet our
purposes for being an institution of
higher learning.
Communication how-tos with me are very
simple. The very best way is through the
Canvas inbox, which is within Canvas,
which is with your course. Ideally,
this is the best because when you
communicate with me, you are
communicating directly with me with not
any spam emails or or messages or any
messages from anybody else. So, it's a
direct communication between you and
myself. It is not going to be sent to
spam. It is not going to be overlooked
among all of the spam emails we tend to
get anyway. um we tend to get any or in
this day and age. So your D number at utah.edu
utah.edu
for example d 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 at
utah.edu edu is your official Utah Tech
email and you should get in the habit of
checking that because that's where all
official communication comes to you from
the university itself.
In your contact brief assignment, you
will need to add yourself to my contact
list on my phone for use with phone
calls or text messaging. I work a couple
of jobs and I have a lot of emails, text
messages, calls that come through and
some of those again are spam. So when
you identify yourself at the beginning
of the course by name and by section, I
will be able to put you in my contact
list and when you do communicate with
me, I will know who you are and what
section you're in. I do try to return
any messages from 24 to 48 hours Monday
through Friday. If you do message me
late Friday, you may not get an answer
until Monday. And I expect you to come
back to watch for a response within that
same time frame. Please don't contact me
today and then don't look for a response
until next week. A timely message may
communicating
on an efficient type of basis. That was
a little glitch from one slide to
another, but that's okay. All right,
you're going to need some materials for
the course and basically everything is
in place. You shouldn't have to even
wonder where things are. your textbook
and the program we're going to be use
for your learning activities is from
Sengage and it's it's through a MindTap
program. The digital activities should
all be accessed through canvas which is
what is termed as deep linked into those
exercises within the Sengage program.
You're going to see that they are
automatically graded as you complete and
you'll be able to get some immediate
feedback from which you can either
revise or you can be satisfied and leave
it as it was already submitted. You're
going to be using Microsoft Office 2021
at the very least. You need 2019.
You will also, it's also known as
Microsoft Office 365 or Microsoft 365.
File storage can be anywhere you store
your files just as long as you know how
to save it and retrieve it from that
location. You do have a Microsoft Office
software license during the time that
you are registered as a student here,
which gives you access to the Microsoft
Office suite programs. And it also gives
you a large amount of storage on one
drive. You can also use your Google
Drive. You can use Dropbox. There are a
variety. You can even carry around a USB
or a hard drive. Hard drive, especially
if you're working from home from your
laptop. You can just save things to your
laptop. The important part is you know
where you're saving it and how to
retrieve it after the fact. A PC and
Windows is required for the majority of
CO coursework. I'm sorry to say, but
those of you that are working from Macs,
it will not work for all required
learning. There is a version of Excel
for the Mac computer, but you're going
to get to some activities that you will
be learning that are not able to be run
on a Mac machine. So, you do need to set
up right from the beginning and have a
place either on campus or a a relative's
computer where you're going to be doing
at least part of your work on their PC.
You can look under fees status and
prerequisites in the syllabus for more
complete information.
Your onecloud storage which is the
storage that you're provided with your
Microsoft programs is found at onerive.com
onerive.com
which you can access from the website or
you can also set your one drive up on
your own computer to be a standard
default drive where you can save without
having to open it in the browser. But I
will tell you that if you're working on campus,
campus,
you will not automatically be logged
into your personal one drive because it
will take you to the default for the
computer you're on. And when you log
off, everything disappears. So, you're
going to need to make sure that you sign
in every time to your one drive on
campus so that when you go home and also
log on to one drive, you will have
access to the files that you're looking for.
for.
Your software requirements I've already
gone over. Just be aware that your
Microsoft is a free download. The
Gmetrics is not an actual download, but
you'll create a shortcut on your own
computer. It's what we use for
additional MOSS exam prep prep software
and you must use a PC. It is not Mac
compatible, but I have just recently
found out a way for you that have Macs
to be able to do your Gmetrics
assignments. So, you will need to send
me a message and ask for those
instructions. As we get closer to using Gmetrics,
Gmetrics,
you are going to be using Certaport
Compass. This is for your Excel expert
test which will come at the end of your
Excel training. It's also considered
basically your final exam in the course.
There's a little more work done after
this test, but it is your last test.
We're also going to be using a program
called Tableau and it's a free download
as well.
Your overall CL course course schedule
is clearly posted on the course calendar
in Canvas as well as at the bottom of
the syllabus. And this class takes the
approach of working through modules so
it's very easy to track and see when
assignments are due. I try to be as
accurate as I can with dates, but as a
bulk of the class is pulled over from
the prior semester. I may have made an
error in not getting something changed
over to the correct date. If I find
those, I do try to change those as soon
as possible. But I want you to be aware
that I reserve the right to make
adjustments to the schedule and or
assignments if I find there's a mistake
or if there's something detrimental to
you as students as a whole and
modifications need to be made. I will
never change it from one night to the
next. You will have probably a week
ahead to see that something had to be
changed. And if you have been working
ahead and you've already completed
something, I will take credit give you
credit for whenever you did complete
that. So don't worry about it. But I
want you to know I do sometimes have to
make adjustments. I do the best I can.
Not perfect though. All right. You need
to plan to spend about nine hours per
week completing study of these topics.
We have two deadlines a week and that is
generally Wednesday and Friday and or
Saturday, excuse me, so that I can give
you three course days to complete each
bank of assignments. So you need to
complete or plan on about 9 hours per
week as to where you're going to plug in
your time. I'm going to wait till the uh
next slide to talk more about that. But
you basically will be completing three
types of assignments. Your learn
assignments which we will work directly
with your e textbook and videos from
myself training which is a simulation
type of training with what you've
learned or introducing new tasks to what
you went through and learn. and then the
apply activity which is going to be
basically a list of please do this
without detailed step-by-step instructions.
instructions.
Any of these can be submitted up to
three times. So you will have immediate
grading and you'll be able to look at
that and say, "Okay, I see what I
missed." pull up the original document,
make your changes, and resubmit it for a
better grade up to three times as long
as you do so by the deadline date. All
of your testing will be proctored,
including the MOSS Excel expert
certification exam.
Back to setting yourself up a schedule.
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Don't fall into the procrastination
deep hole where I'll get that as soon as
I get a minute, but I need to do this
first. Oh, wait a minute. It's now
11:00. My assignments are due at
midnight. I'm not going to have enough
time to complete it. You need to set
yourself up a schedule. Whatever you do
or use as a planner, you need to plug in
some time. So, you might want to you've
got 3 days to complete an assignment.
You might want to do an hour, an hour,
and 15 minutes
for each of those three days. I can tell
you that you will not complete most
things in 1 hour. So, if you go to work
at 11 and your deadline time is 11:59,
you're not going to have everything complete.
complete.
Test yourself for overloading your
schedule. Something will have to give if
you are overloaded. Be proactive and
realistic with how many hours you have
in a day. If you are working and your
employer has certain demands that you
must be meet, put that in your planner
first and then see where you have time
to take a class to do the homework for
the class and be successful in the
number of credits for which you've registered.
registered.
There's no harm in taking 12 credits
versus 15 if you simply don't have the
time to do well in all of the credits,
but you need to figure that out be so
that you can withdraw before a W gets
put on your transcript or so you so you
can get any refunds that may be due.
Look at the UTU website to find out what
those schedules are.
This is probably out of order, but our
goal for the class is for you all to
become Microsoft Excel expert certified.
When you are certified, you will get a
certificate similar to this and it you
can put this in an e portfolio in a a
paper copy. You can put it on your
resume that you are certified as an
Excel. Mine was taken with the 2019. So,
Excel 2019 expert, but that's what your
goal is. Learn the Excel program and
learn it well enough that you can be
certified as an expert.
Let me caution you to think that expert
doesn't mean you know all there is to
know about Excel. But what it does mean
is that you have been exposed and have
worked in enough of Excel that you
should be able to figure everything else
out as you go and you're not coming in
as a novice with no experience in Excel
at all.
Caution you that late work is
unacceptable. There's a good amount of
work to be completed uh completed in
this course and this there's an error
there. You will have two deadlines each
week and you can expect about three to
four hours of learning per deadline with
the two deadlines.
My late policy is this. For full credit,
the assignment must be turned in by the
deadline, which is 11:59 p.m. on the
given day. If an assignment is submitted
late, a 20% penalty of the points
possible will be applied to the score up
until 3 days past the due date. And
there again, there is a mistake.
I did extend this to 4 days. So, please
be aware four four days past the due
What do I expect from you as an
instructor? I expect that you will
adhere to the student code of conduct
which should be followed at all times.
You're expected to act with integrity
and honesty. You're expected to be
present in the online class on a regular
basis and to complete assignments on
time and stay until the class is
dismissed. And by that I mean until you
are finished. You can work ahead, you
just can't work behind. And another
reminder, if you send me an email
referencing any message that you might
send me, don't wait a week to check for
the answer because the answer may no
longer be relevant based on what we were
doing at the time.
So now we're going to jump over into the
I wanted to take just a moment. I
corrected the information in the slide
that was incorrect that we've already
gone over. So I wanted to take just 30
seconds and go over this so visually you
see the right information. One of the
things was it was three deadlines each
week and there are only two with 3 to
four hours learning per deadline. And
for the late policy that is the same,
but the difference is the 20% late
penalty will be up until 4 days past the
due date after which the assignment does close.
So, let's go ahead for the next few
minutes and just take a spin around the
course and get you just a little bit
synchronized into the course to see
to make sure you can see where you're
headed and how you go. We're looking at
the student view. What you see as a
student within the course and this is
called the homepage. All right, this
gives you the name this semester. I like
to put little thoughts up every once in
a while. Here's my information. You can
also find it in the syllabus uh as well.
And that for the size of my screen that
will actually be a oneliner. It just
happens to be the size of the screen
that I'm using at this time.
Key to this page in particular are a
couple of things. Everything in the
class is organized in the modules over
here. So you can click on start here and
it will take you to the orientation
video which you're already in. But you
can also access the modules here. So
here or here or if you come down here
there are links to your course
resources, the orientation module and
the different modules that we have
available in the course. I'm not going
to go back and forth to each one of
those, but this is that's your homepage.
Now over here you have a to-do list
which gives you upcoming assignments and
when they're due. So establishing
contact is due by January 14th, the
orientation by the 14th. EXM1 learn by
the 17th. You will have instruction
along the way that will help all of
these make sense. But you can access
your assignments directly from the to-do
list or you can go over to the modules
and click on the module and it will
bring up the modules page. Let's go over
a few things right here. The course
resources including your eex reading
modules. This is basically your e textbook.
textbook.
These are links to the chapters or as
they're called modules in this book.
They're for reference only. These links,
if you are doing the apply, which
doesn't give a lot of instruction, and
you have forgotten how to do a
particular task, you could go back into
that module, let's say it was module
three, and pull up the textbook and go
into the textbook and find that
particular task you're looking for. You
don't want to use these to get to your
assignments because it won't take you to
the assignment itself. It will just take
you to the book. I usually go ahead and
collapse this particular module until
if I need it. You may never need it. But
these then are called modules. The
orientation module contains the syllabus
orientation that you're doing now.
establishing contact, creating and
accessing your Sgage account, and how to
join Zoom virtual office hours. These
need to be completed basically in the
order they show here. And this module
needs to be completed before you can go
to your next module, which is your
modules 1 through 4. As I mentioned
before, these are broken down into a
learn, then a train, and then apply for
each of your different modules. Modules
1 through 4 covers what would be known
as the associate skills that are needed
for an associate certification, which we
are not including in this course,
although you will take a type of MOSS
associate test just to see if you could
get there. So, you'll see that these
also have dates. All right. Um, a
proctoo quiz is due on the same day this
one is. It's just to get you acquainted
with the proctoring software that I use
to proctor you when you're taking a
test. Then, we're going to move from the
send gauge materials into our additional
software access under Gmetrics to help
you better prepare for the skills that
you need to know and learn. And so there
are some assignments here. You're going
to see careers or data analysis
discussions, papers, things throughout
the semester just to better acquaint you
with how Excel fits into this type of
field. This would be a link to your
first test. And I you're going to see
two of these links. One is where you
click here to start remotely proctored
tests which means that that's going to
activate proctoo which is our online
proctoring system and through clicking
on this remotely proctored
link it will link that then to this exam
and the score for the exam will be
placed here. You cannot access the test
from here without first clicking on the
remotely proctored link.
And then you're going to go ahead and
move on to these uh others. The reason
this shows as dimmed out is because you
can't complete this module until you've
done your orientation.
And so as soon as you complete these
four items, then all of this is going to
light up just like modules 5 through
eight down the road. So this is
basically where you access your work.
All of the links that you're going to
your grade book as you go. So you're
going to link to all of the assignments
through here. So when you click on exm1,
it's going to take you to send gauge to
link you up with that assignment. They
are linked so that as you complete the
assignment once it's been graded within
send gauge, it will automatically put
your grade back into Canvas. Do not try
to access these links directly through
Sgage because then you've broken the
link and the scores will not come back
to Canvas and post a score that you have completed.
completed.
So that's basically your modules access.
I'm slipping back to the home screen.
All right. And so in those modules
you'll find all of these assignments.
This is a a quick way to look and see
what's upcoming. Again, if you know this
is due on January 17th, you really need
to start it about the 15th and work on
it the 15th, 16th, and finish it on the
17th to be submitted. Remember that in
order to submit it two or three times,
you've got to submit it the first time
and give yourself enough time to the
deadline because if you submit it a
second time after the deadline, you will
receive late credit for that particular assignment.
assignment.
Another place you can look at your
deadlines is by viewing the course
calendar. And when you basically if you
look at your Canvas calendar right now,
this is only has this section's
assignments on them. But you will find
also that with all of your Canvas
classes, your other deadlines for all of
your other classes that are incorporated
through Canvas are going to be completed
here as well. So, this can be a really
nice tool in helping you basically get
to where you need to be as far as
assignments and what you need to do. So,
we're going to come back to the courses
and back to the link here.
So, basically that is your course in a
nutshell. Your grades can be viewed at
any time by clicking on the grades link
over here and it will take you you'll
see here here are the assignments.
You'll see your scores. Make sure that
you go back and look at any comments
which would highlight here that I have
made within that assignment. But this
provides you the detail as well. The
last thing we're going to jump into here
is actually the syllabus.
And I'm not going to go much into the
syllabus today other than what I've
already done because you're going to be
doing the orientation quiz which is
going to pull some information from the
syllabus for you to answer your
questions. So I some of the things I've
already touched on your nine activity
hours per week, your um virtual office
hours via Zoom. And I'm going to go
back. In fact, I'm going to do it right
now before I forget. When we set a Zoom
meeting or a meeting for you and I to
meet online, you do so you link to me by
coming into the course. Do not try to
just log into Zoom and try and find our
meeting. You are going to click on the
Zoom link for virtual office hours. If
you do not have access software to Zoom
on your computer, it's going to ask for
per permission to put that in. And then
you can go ahead and you'll click on
that and you'll join me on Zoom, which
is um I'm I have been on it. That's how
I did my introduction to you in the
first place, but for this video, it
doesn't want to allow me to pull it uh
in. Oh, there we go. All right. So we
would meet virtually on the Zoom screen.
We can share our screens so that I can
bring up a file and show you, you can
bring up your file and show me. We can
visit back and forth and it can be very
interactive. So don't hesitate to be
comfortable with getting on Zoom and
dropping in and let's take a look at
what your questions might be. Okay,
good. Now I'm going to jump back to that syllabus.
syllabus.
All right. Uh, the contact information,
the description, your fees. I want you
to go through all of this. I summarized
it briefly. How do I get Microsoft
Office on my computer? And even if you
have Microsoft Office, but it's an
outdated version, you are entitled to
get the updated version through virtue
of the fact that you are just um a
student. And again, I want to emphasize
not all tasks can be completed in an
Apple version of Excel. And it is highly
recommended that you use a PC to
complete this work. You will find as
business majors in particular that a Mac
is not a highly used tool for business
production. Macs are great. They're very
userfriendly and they're great for
graphics. But in terms of
business production tasks that you're
going to be using, a Mac is not as good
as a PC and the tools that you'll find
in there. So, I'm sorry about for those
of you that have Macs, but keep that in
mind. And again, the campus has
computers, so if you can do uh much of
what you've got at home on your Mac,
then you can certainly come to campus
and finish up here. All right, we've
talked about structure and schedule. I
want you to pay attention to doing
things through chat GPT only when we do
assignments that require writing. Uh,
Title 9 information here provides an we
do provide an environment that is free
of bias, discrimination, and harassment.
And we do have a policy and this refers
you to here. If you have a disability
and need some kind of accommodation, the
MOS certification, the um L Excel
certification exam test out, which means
that if you have a certificate from
Certupport, that shows that you have
passed the certification test for Excel
Expert, not Excel Associate, and it is
anywhere from 2019 through 21 or
Microsoft 365. 5 that would test you out
of the Excel portion of this course. So
the associate level is just beginning
and it's not sufficient for testing out.
We've talked about how to get hold of
me. Canvas announcements and Canvas mail
are just like the syllabus. You are
expected to read and know any updates or
messages that come through either one of
those. All right. Official
communication, including weight list
notifications, will be sent to your utah.edu
utah.edu
email address, and you really should get
in the habit of checking that on a daily
basis, as well as your Canvas messages.
We briefly talked about course learning
outcomes and how they blend into program
and institutional learning outcomes.
Here is the grading scale. What
percentage equates to what grade? Your
uh grade will be broke down in giving
you 70% of your grade will come from
your assignments and 30% will come from
your unit and certification exams. Um
we've talked about how you find your
assignments. We've talked about proctoo.
We've talked about late work. Um we've
here's your grading practices. We're
talking about the three types of
assignments. I've already already gone
over that. And you are expected to act
with integrity and honesty during all
aspects of this course. Please do not
cheat. Please do not use someone else's
work. Be honest with yourself and be
honest with me. Um, as we get into some
discussions here as some etiquette and
language language with regards to those
discussions in terms of being friendly,
positive and self-reflective.
Appropriate language and title should
always be used. You should be professional
professional
and ask for clarification
in order to clear up miscommunication.
Content of post. Here's some more.
Here's some discussion tips. Here's uh
computer and digital literacy skills
that you should already have before
taking this class. So keep that in mind.
We have uh student help desk that can
help you get with your own computers.
You can take them in and they'll help
you with whatever the problem happens to
be. Uh you need to plan to log into
canvas canvas and work in this course at
least at a minimum of three times a
week. There are additional resources
here from across campus. So, please take
some time, go through the syllabus and
find all of the resources that are
available to you.
All right? There's a lot of stuff here
and so just make sure that you take go
through and take uh note of everything
that's there and it's a good idea to go
back and review that often. And then
here's your course summary in terms of
your due dates and what's due on which
date. And again, that is all part of
your syllabus. And that will actually
end your syllabus.
the end of the orientation video.
You will have be able to take your syllabus
syllabus
orientation quiz at this point and
complete those three other items in your
orientation module and then you're open
and ready to go. So, first thing you
