so what is informative speaking here
we're just going to talk a little bit
about what is expected of you and the
requirements for an informative speech
so let's begin by talking about what the
goal of an informative speech is and if
you understand that you're really trying
to teach your audience about something
that will help you narrow things down
you're not trying to persuade us about
something and get us to change our
actions or our values you're just trying
to teach us about something so it's more
narrow your challenges though are a
couple the first is you've got to find
something that's interesting and you
need to find something that's
interesting to you so that you'll be
interested to research it and present it
and also something that was is
interesting and relevant to your
audience and so you really need to think
about how you can make your interests
interesting and relevant to your
audience why is this something that they
need to hear about and that's going to
be one of the first things that you're
going to need to address a second
challenge is that you'll need to find
information that is substantial and new
on your topic if you for example are an
expert rodeo rider and you've competed
in a lot of different rodeos that does
not mean that you don't need to research
the topic so even if you have a lot of
experience in the topic you're going to
need to find outside information to
support your ideas because honestly no
one is the only expert out there and
your job will be to find then
information that is new to you because
you're researching it and you're
presenting information oh I didn't know
that and to the audience because they
need to be motivated to listen and if
you provide them new information that
will happen so it needs to be
substantial and new in addition you'll
need to organize the information in a
way that is manageable and that we can
follow one of the main tasks for this
informative presentation is
understanding and utilizing
organizational strategies you can give
us a laundry list of 50 things
but we'll never be able to remember that
so you need to chunk the information and
organize it and that's really what this
assignment is about teaching you those
organizational strategies which you will
then use for the rest of your life so
what can you do speeches about now
there's a separate brief lecture on
coming up with topics but you can do
speeches about all kinds of things and
if you understand these are different
angles for an informative speech it
might help you start to generate some
ideas of what you might want to cover so
you could do speeches about people so
who are interesting people to you I'm
Alexander the Great Alfred Hitchcock and
you could do speeches about objects you
could talk about the largest ball of
string you could talk about the features
of windchimes you could talk about
places Stonehenge or Machu Picchu or
where you grew up you could talk about
activities or events you could talk
about the career fair that's happening
next week you could talk about hiking in
Glacier ok so there's a lot of
activities and events you could talk
about different processes are you
planting an herb garden learning to ride
a unicycle you could talk about concepts
what is Kaymer ism what is param Nisha
also known as deja boo' you could talk
about conditions wharf ism on
hypothermia you could talk about issues
ageism the role of women in the military
ok so there are many and these are just
examples but these are ways to start to
break down where can I start to think
about informative speeches and as I said
there's a separate brief lecture about
how to find a topic so one of the
guidelines for your informative speech
well the first is you shouldn't assume
that your audience knows what you know
we are asking you to do additional
research so you certainly are going to
end up knowing more than your audience
knows but you should understand and meet
them at the level of information that
they have don't be too technical for
them don't
to basic for them so that will require
some understanding about who it is that
you're talking to and what they might
know the second is to be objective here
you're going to talk about what I mean
by being objective is if you're talking
about for example the issue of the role
of women in the military you're not
arguing that women should or should not
be allowed to serve in them in combat
for example you're saying that over the
years for instance these are the ways
that women have come into having
different roles in the military right so
you're just giving us information so
that you want to find information that
is from solid objective sources second
thing or the next thing is that you
should be specific but this means that
you shouldn't talk in general terms so
in you know the role of women in the
military is that that they had to learn
how to use weapons I mean what are you
talking about are you talking about in
the US military are you talking about
Roman military what are you talking
about can you be specific and then
develop that information specifically
and sort of the more detail that you get
the more specific you get the more news
that you're going to create if you talk
in general abstractions it's not going
to be that interesting and it's also
going to be difficult to follow so we
like as audiences concrete examples
you'll also want to be clear and this
means presenting the information in a
way that is illustrative right um that
you illustrate your ideas that you
support your ideas that you use language
that we understand that's not too
technical that you're very clear in
terms of what it is that you're
presenting um and obviously you'll want
to be accurate and this will require you
to do research if for instance you
decide that you're going to talk about
how to make a lemon meringue pie and you
you always just wing it when you do it
presenting a speech about winging making
pie is not going to be very effective so
you'll need to find other recipes about
about that pie and you'll need to put
together information from a variety of
sources that helps you explain why or
for how long you beat meringue for
example so you'll need to be accurate
with the information that you present
and there's no winging it that those are
double terms in this class right winging
it so you'll need to be prepared and
you'll need to be accurate with the
information and finally you'll need to
be relevant you'll need to explain why
this matters to your audience why do we
need to know about how to make a pie why
do we need to know about women in the
military or spider-man or Firebird
convertibles why do we need to know this
information and so that being relevant
to the audience will be is something
that you'll need to consistently think
about so generally speaking that's what
the goal of your informative speech is
